Если нужно сказать о том, что у вас стресс или вы переживаете похожее чувство, потребуются фразы to be stressed (переживать стресс), а также to be stressed out или wound up (быть взвинченным, на нервах). Оба эти выражения являются неформальными  (informal), поэтому, если вы хотите быть более формальным, можно сказать, что вы  under a lot of pressure/stress.

Когда разговор заходит о стрессах, всегда говорят о причинах (reasons), вызвавших его.  Вы можете сказать, к примеру, что ваша работа нервирует вас (the job stresses out) или сводит с ума (drives crazy). Это неформальные выражения, которые мы используем ежедневно.

Работа, особенно если ее слишком много, является обычной причиной стресса (common cause of stress). Когда у нас слишком много работы, можно сказать, что мы буквально по уши погрязли в ней (snowed under work или up to our ears in work).

Если вы считаете, что слишком много работаете, можно сказать, что “I’m overworked”, а если вам приходится задерживаться после работы, скажите “I’m working/ doing overtime”.

Если вы чувствуете, что стресс переполняет вас (you feel too stressed), вам нужно снять его (relieve your stress), отправившись куда-то, чтобы расслабиться (relax), снять напряжение (de-stress) или успокоиться (wind down). Все эти фразы означают одно и то же. Как только вы расслабились (relaxed), можно сказать, что вы чувствуете себя спокойно (feel calm или de-stressed).

Вот несколько примеров того, как люди говорят о своих стрессах:

  • Jane is so stressed about completing her report! – Джейн нервничает из-за того, что нужно завершить свой отчет.
  • I’m stressed about passing my exam tomorrow – я переживаю из-за экзамена, который нужно сдать завтра.
  • With these difficult calculations I’m so stressed- эти трудные расчеты измотали меня.
  • I’m going crazy with making her believe me – я схожу с ума, пытаясь убедить ее верить мне.
  • My problem is that I can’t stop thinking about it and it keeps me up all night! –

Stress

Nowadays people are very busy at school, at university, at work and so on. Sometimes they have no time to relax or to spend free time with their family or friends because, actually, they have no free time. Besides, people do many stressful activities, for example, they drive a car, work with something important and dangerous and so on. Also, there are many conflicts between colleagues, family members and friends. Such factors lead to stress. Stress is a big problem nowadays. People can be under pressure for a long time.
We often hear that the drivers are very nervous people. While driving a car they are under pressure. They have to be focused and very careful. There are many dangerous situations on the road. Drivers do their best to avoid them. Such conditions lead to stress. Another stressful activity is a work. People say that office workers are always under pressure. They spend much time at the office. Often they have to do some work in a very short time. Besides, there are usually many workers in a room, so office workers cannot relax. Different conflicts only add pressure.
What can people do to keep cool under pressure? I think preventive actions are very important. People should relax for a while and take a break. Besides they should be ready for some stressful situations. Of course, sometimes it is impossible to collect yourself, so, maybe, it is important to be near someone who can put you at your ease.

Almost everyone is society has a job to do. Having work is important as it gives certain social status, pays salary and maintains self-esteem. Job can be rather rewarding. However, many people nowadays are leading hectic lifestyles. They work too much and have little breaks.

This inevitably leads to stress. We often hear the word “stress” in everyday life, although it is not clear what it really is. “Stress” means pressure and tension. It is a common problem in modern life. Unfortunately, too much stress results into physical, emotional and mental health problems.

The reasons for stress are numerous. It’s not only overworking or having no time for rest. Stress factors also include dangerous situations, difficulties at home, divorce, loss of close friends, etc. Changes for the better can also cause stress.

For example, getting married, having a baby, moving houses, entering a university. Of course, everything depends on the way a person reacts. Experts advise not to worry too much and stay calm in any situation. It is very important to try to avoid stress or at least to minimize it.

When noticed on early stages, it can be fixed easier.

One of the best ways to fight stress is to keep a sense of humor in difficult situations. Even doctors agree that laughter is the best medicine for all diseases.

Other ways to cope with stress include regular leisure activities and interesting hobbies. If someone feels depressed, a good solution is taking up yoga classes or swimming, bicycling, knitting, gardening, painting, etc.

Anything, that can help a person to relax and get a new lease on life, is considered to be helpful.

Stress and How to Cope Well With It

Nowadays many people say that they are tired of their hectic lifestyle. They work too much and stop taking breaks. They forget about everything striving for their goals and they constantly raise the bar. Very often they don’t find personal satisfaction in their work and don’t love what they do.

They have no sense of personal accomplishment and self-satisfaction. Some people don’t feel content even when they achieve their goal. One the contrary, they feel disillusioned and dissatisfied. Having climbed the ladder of success they find nothing worthwhile on the top.

Constant fatigue, physical and moral exhaustion, monotony and impossible pressure at work and at home can cause stress.

Stress is the emotional and physical strain caused by people’s response to pressure from the outside world. Stress causes tension, irritability, anxiety, alarm, loss of concentration, sensations of fear and panic as well as headaches and a fast heartbeat. It can result in a real breakdown of health. Stress can even cause heart disease and cancer.

Решебник Spotlight 11 Английский в фокусе Афанасьева О.В. 11 класс

  • 4 Портфолио: Подготовьте двухминутный разговор на тему стресса.
  • Скажите: • что это такое и чем это вызвано • как он влияет на наши тела • что подвергает вас стрессу • что вы делаете, чтобы снять стресс
  • Ответ №1:

Stress is the natural reaction the human body has to deal with life’s changes.

When we are stressed, our muscles tense, our breathing becomes shallow and adrenaline is released into our bloodstream. This helps us focus and gives us the strength to survive in difficult situations. Stress is sometimes good because it keeps us alert, but it is bad for the heart and our general well-being if we have a lot.

Thankfully, we can quite often avoid stress and we can also learn how to cope with it. When I feel stressed, for example, when I have too much work to do, am sitting exams or am organizing an important event, I try to do a lot of aerobic exercise or listen to some calm music. That usually helps. Etc

Stress is the body’s state of tension. It causes a change in life. When I’m stressed, I’m worried. But stress also helps us. For example, to get used to a new life. The stress for me is when my favorite team missed a goal. In stress I listen to music or drink tea. BUT I’m a calm person.

Перевод:

Стресс это Состояние напряжения организма. Вызвана изменениями в жизни. Когда у меня стресс я волнуюсь. Но стресс также и помогает нам. Например, привыкнуть к новой жизни. Стресс для меня это,когда моя любимая команда пропустила гол. От стресса я слушаю музыку или пью чай. НО я спокойный человек.

Ответ №3:

Stress is a response of the body man on overvoltage and negative emotions. Stress affects the whole body, can lead to headaches, heart palpitations, chronic sleep deprivation and high fatigue the body. For example, I have stress before the test at school. I eat sweets and listen to music to relieve stress.

Перевод:

Стресс — это ответная реакция организма человека на перенапряжение и негативные эмоции. стресс влияет на работу всего организма, может привести к головным болям, учащению сердцебиения, хроническому недосыпанию и высокой утомляемости организма. Например, я испытываю стресс перед контрольной работой в школе. Я ем сладости и слушаю музыку, чтобы избавиться от стресса.

Параллельный текст на английском: Как справиться со стрессом. How to let go of stress | Паралелльные тексты на Study.ru

Перевод: Екатерина Шамшурина.

Kate was almost relieved when the school term started. She no longer had to get up at 6am to prepare packed lunches before driving the children to their various courses and rushing to work.

Now she dashes home to pick them up from their after-school activities before taking work calls amid the noise of squabbling over supper. She’s often up till midnight working and doing laundry.

She can just about hold everything together, until her boss asks her to come in for a 9am meeting.

At home and work we have become increasingly more demanding as we have more choices to make than ever before.

Наши запросы и дома, и на работе растут, мы никогда не удовлетворены полностью, потому что сейчас у нас гораздо больше выбора, чем раньше.

Increasingly, research shows that so much choice and opportunity leaves us feeling needy and incomplete.

The harder we work, the more stuff we want to accumulate, the more we consume, the hungrier we seem to get. Much of the time, we’re concentrating on resolving crises instead of preventing them.

Many of us are exhausted, but only realise it when an apparently small problem floors us.

It is estimated that 100,000 Britons have chronic fatigue. Many more feel wiped out or physically and mentally depleted.

Dr Frank Lipman, author of Spent? End Exhaustion & Feel Great Again, has identified the condition in hundreds of his patients.

He believes feeling spent is an understandable response to the times we live in.

  • I’m a wide profile (your fields) professional – фраза для перечисления сфер деятельности, в которых у вас есть опыт работы. “Wide profile” звучит значительнее и профессиональнее, нежели “I’ve been working in…”.
  • I perform well under pressure – о вашей способности эффективно работать в стрессовых ситуациях.
  • I’m used to work in a busy environment – еще одно выражение о работе в сложных условиях. При собеседовании можно сделать акцент на этой вашей особенности, употребив обе эти фразы.
  • Customer-orientated – да, доброжелательность и хорошее отношение к клиентам – важные составляющие во многих сферах деятельности. Если это относится и к вашей профессии, непременно включите этот пункт в свое резюме.
  • Meeting targets — это слова тру-профессионала о том, что он в состоянии “to get things done in time”. Согласитесь, “to meet targets” звучит очень значительно и очень по-деловому.
  • Handle stress easily – эта фраза хорошо подходит для вакансий, требующих непосредственного общения с людьми – будь то позиции официантов или менеджеров по продажам.
  • Team player – если вы в состоянии поддерживать легкую атмосферу в коллективе и выстраивать отношения с коллегами, скажите об этом.
  • Can-do attitude – значит, что вы не приемлете поражений, не боитесь временных трудностей – просто преодолеваете их, находя правильные решения.
  • Drive to succeed – стремление к успеху. Такая фраза подходит далеко не для каждой позиции, так как может звучать слишком амбициозно, а иногда даже смешно, в зависимости от вакансии, на которую вы хотите претендовать.
  • Results driven – для нацеленных на результат, замотивированных соискателей.
  • Eager to learn – устойчивое выражение, которое сделает акцент на вашем желании учиться и познавать новое. Скрытое сообщение работодателю о том, что вы можете разобраться во всех делах компании.
  • Good at multitasking – вы способны работать одновременно над несколькими проектами и переключаться при необходимости с одного на другой. Иногда это важно работодателю.

Описание предыдущего опыта

  • I have … years’ experience in the field – возможность в одном предложении озвучить и область деятельности, и стаж. Неплохо.
  • Proven track record – официально подтвержденный опыт работы и соответствующие рекомендации, сертификаты и т.п.
  • Work against the clock – можно добавить при случае, если предыдущая работа была динамичной и требовалось серьезно потрудиться, чтобы выполнять задачи вовремя. Фраза-синоним – “to meet deadlines”.
  • Liaise with other departments – не совсем обычный синоним слова “communicate”, который обратит на себя внимание. Так что если на собеседовании зайдет речь о том, как активно вы взаимодействовали с разными подразделениями, вспомните об этой фразе.

Почему вы хотите получить эту работу

Избитый, надоевший вопрос, который, тем не менее, повторяется на каждом интервью и требует от соискателя какого-то ответа. Очевидно, что ответы также не блещут разнообразием – «хорошая зарплата», «возможности и развитие»:

  • I want to further my career in… – можете заявить о ваших ожиданиях и дать понять, что отсутствие развития – одна из причин ухода с предыдущей работы.
  • In line with my qualifications – хорошая реплика. Вы заявляете о себе как о профессионале, соответствующем требованиям вакансии. Неплохо, если это утверждение будет соответствовать действительности.
  • I want to take on more responsibility –

  • My remuneration/salary/reward was adequate – если вас спросят об уровне зарплате на предыдущей работе, а вы не считаете нужным сообщать эту информацию, то заучите эту фразу.
  • I expect experience based remuneration – говорить сразу о конкретных цифрах не принято, поэтому можно сослаться на ваш бесценный опыт и сказать, что уровень дохода должен соответствовать вашим знаниям и навыкам.
  • My salary expectations are in line with my qualifications and education –упомяните и свое образование, если оно соответствует желаемой должности и может заинтересовать работодателя.

Что отличает вас от других кандидатов?

  • Еще один стандартный вопрос. Своего рода возможность преподнести себя в наиболее выгодном свете:
  • I’m self-motivated – слишком затерто, но все же можно сказать и так. Хороший работник должен иметь какую-то мотивацию к качественному выполнению своих обязанностей.
  • I take pride in my work – с большой долей вероятности руководитель примет на работу человека, который гордится своей работой и хорошо выполняет ее день за днем.
  • I’m very attentive to detail –

  • I have effective communication skills in English – both verbally and in writing – хорошо для включения в резюме, так как информирует и о письме и о разговорных навыках. “Fluent” в резюме лучше не использовать, так как беглость – понятие очень растяжимое и может видеться по-разному вами и работодателем.
  • I’ve been speaking English for the last … years – скажите о том, сколько лет вы говорите по-английски. Чем больше «стаж», тем меньше сомнений у нанимателя.
  • I’ve been working in an English speaking environment for the last … years – похоже на предыдущую фразу, но с акцентом на то, что у вас уже есть опыт работы в англоязычной среде, соответственно, вам будет несложно взаимодействовать с людьми на новом месте.
  • My English is competent for this industry – если вы хорошо знакомы с терминологией и лексикой в вашей области деятельности и на 100% сможете понимать документацию и общаться на профессиональные темы, обязательно скажите об этом.

И, заучивая их все разом, можно легко перепутать затем созвучные «take off», «take on» или «take over».

Группируем по темам

Но все же группировать можно и нужно! Один из проверенных способов эффективно запоминать фразовые глаголы – сгруппировать их значения по определенным темам. Например, вспомните частые разговорные темы: работа, семья, отношения.

  • Например, к теме «работа» можно отнести такие выражения, как
  • be off – отсутствовать (на работе)
  • call off – отменить (встречу)
  • pull off – завершить (начатое, проект)
  • take on – нанимать, принимать (на работу)
  • take over – взять руководство, прийти к власти
  • lay off – увольнять
  • А вот фразовые глаголы, при помощи которых можно обсудить тему борьбы, преодоления:
  • put down – подавлять
  • let down – подставить, подводить
  • give up – сдаться

Но основное значение фразового глагола to make upпридумать. Как вы видите, у этого значения нет ничего общего с предыдущим.

Поэтому этот фразовый глагол лучше всего запомнить в контексте определенного предложения.

Come on! You just made it up! / Да ладно! Ты только что это выдумал!

  • Кроме того, если к этому сочетанию добавить другие предлоги – получатся самостоятельные фразовые глаголы с совершенно иным смыслом.
  • Например,
  • To make up with – помириться с

I need to make up with my brother. / Мне необходимо помириться с братом.

To make up for – возместить, компенсировать, восполнить, наверстать

My landlord demands to make up for damage. / Хозяин квартиры требует возместить ущерб.

Word and Sentence stress in English

This time I am going to draw your attention to some delicate item of the English language. To begin with, you’ve got to remember that each time you learn new vocabulary, it is important to make sure you know the following:

• the meaning of the word you’re learning;

• collocation (which other words commonly go with it);
• “currency” — whether or not the word is restricted to certain situations or can be used widely;
• its spelling;

• and pronunciation.

Let’s take the word “ DESPERATE“.

Meaning
  •  —   feeling that you have no hope and are ready to do anything to change the situation you are in (desperate with sth) ;
  •  —  needing or wanting something very much (desperate for sth, desperate to do sth );
  •  —    a desperate situation is very bad or serious.
Collocation desperate attempt/bid/effort; desperate battle/struggle/fight
“Currency” quite frequently used (especially by pessimists)
Spelling desperate (not disparate or whatever else)
Pronunciation /ˈdes.pər.ət/

Although the last point is crucially important, very often it’s neglected by students and even by teachers. There are two interesting features of English pronunciation which give you the key to understanding and being understood and these are STRESS and INTONATION. Today we’ll start by considering WORD and SENTENCE STRESS (наголос).

English is considered a stressed language while many other languages are considered syllabic. What does that mean? It means that in English, certain words have stress within a sentence, and certain syllables have stress within a word.

And it is this stress that allows our ears to understand the meaning and also to pick up the important parts of the sentence. We give stress to certain words while other words are quickly spoken (some students say eaten!). In other languages, such as French or Italian, each syllable receives equal importance (there is stress, but each syllable has its own length).

English however, spends more time on specific stressed words while quickly gliding over the other, less important, words.

What is word stress?

In multi-syllable words (багатоскладових словах) the stress falls on one of the syllables while the other syllables tend to be spoken over quickly. For example, try saying the following words to yourself: qualify, banana, understand.

All of them have 3 syllables and one of the syllables in each word will sound louder than the others: so, we get QUAlify, baNAna and underSTAND. (The syllables indicated in capitals are the stressed syllables).

What makes a syllable stressed? It is usually higher in pitch (the level of the speaker’s voice). It’s pronounced louder. And finally, it’s longer in duration.

Stress can fall on the first, middle or last syllables of words, as is shown here:

Ooo oOo ooO
SYLlabus enGAGEment usheRETTE
SUBstitute baNAna kangaROO
TECHnical phoNEtic underSTAND

In order for one syllable to be perceived as stressed, the syllables around it need to be unstressed. Have another look at the groups of words in the table above. In the word SYLLABUS, we said the first syllable was stressed. This logically implies that the final two are unstressed.

Also, in the word BANANA, the first and third syllables are unstressed, and the middle one is stressed. In order to improve your pronunciation, focus on pronouncing the stressed syllable clearly. However, don’t be afraid to «mute» (not say clearly) the other unstressed vowels.

But how do we recognize where the stress falls? Well, there are a couple of ideas:

1. Try putting this word in the end of a short sentence, and saying it over a few times: for example, It’s in the syllabus; He had a prior engagement; I don’t understand.

2. Try saying this word as though you have been completely taken by surprise: for example, SYLlabus? baNAna? kangaROO?

#1 Lost the plot

#5 It does my head in
Summary

Here’s a question.

Who do you think is going to be better at communicating in English in an international situation:

Jerry, a guy from somewhere in Britain?

Jerry: man with tattoos giving the thumbs up

Or Karina, from somewhere in Russia?

Karina: middle-aged woman sitting on park bench

The answer is: Karina.

Surprised?

Me too!

According to research1,2, British people are among the worst communicators in English!

That’s because, although they know more words and phrases in English, British people are terrible (statistically speaking) at the strategies that help communication.

These strategies include things like saying something in a different way when the other person doesn’t understand.

Or checking with the other person that they’ve understood in the first place.

And Brits have one more habit that drives English learners crazy:

They don’t simplify their language when talking to people from other countries.

They often use idiomatic words and phrases — the same words and phrases that they use with their friends and family.

So what does this mean for you?

Well, when that strange British person at work is talking to you with those strange words and phrases, don’t panic!

If you don’t know the phrases, try to guess the meaning from context — that’s an important skill to have.

But it also helps to have some phrases in your pocket, right?

So here we are — 5 common British English phrases for stressful situations.

102 Little Drawings eBook

Lost the plot

What does it mean?

This phrase basically means “lost touch with reality.”

How can I use it?

This phrase has quite a large range of meanings.

It can mean “completely crazy.”

Like if your neighbour’s started singing pop songs to the tune of Beethoven’s fifth symphony, wearing a flower pot on her head and painting massive pictures of cats on her wall.

British English Phrase #1: Lost the plot

Then, yeah — she’s crazy. She’s lost the plot.

Or we can use it when our boss starts asking us to do ridiculous and pointless things — a familiar situation, right?

Like when the boss sends out a memo telling all employees to sign their emails with “yours sincerely and most humbly and obediently.” Which is pretty random. You could say he’s lost the plot.

Throw a spanner in the works

What does it mean?

OK. So let’s say you’re travelling by bus across Kazakhstan. Because that’s exactly the sort of thing you’d do, right?

VW bus in the desert

Maybe not your best idea.

You’re going to the Caspian Sea, where you’re meeting a friend for a four-day wedding — yep! Exactly the kind of thing you do, isn’t it?

You need to meet your friend in a couple of days, but that’s OK, because you’ve only got a few hundred miles left of the trip. You’ll be fine!

Then the bus breaks down in the middle of nowhere.

Now the plan’s kind of messed up, right?

You can say that the bus breaking down really threw a spanner in the works.

British English Phrase #2: Throw a spanner in the works

Definitely not your best idea.

We use it to describe something that ruins or causes problems to a plan.

How can I use it?

To be fair, the example I used was fairly extreme.

You can actually use this phrase for all sorts of other situations. Like when you were planning on having a picnic with your best friend, Karen.

Then it starts raining, which throws a spanner in the works.

Or when you want to leave work early because the boss is out. You’re just about to leave when he comes back unexpectedly — throwing a spanner in the works.

You also don’t have to use the full phrase:

DERRICK: OK. The film starts at 8, so let’s meet at about 7?
JENNIE: Sorry, I’ve got to work late — I don’t finish till 8:30.
DERRICK: Damn! That’s a spanner in the works.

You can also “have a spanner in the works”:

Bad news. I’m afraid we’ve got a bit of a spanner in the works. The computer system’s down. Again.

Nice one!

What does it mean?

“Good work! I’m impressed!”

How can I use it?

You can use this phrase in two different ways.

There’s the nice way and the not-so-nice way.

Let’s look at the nice way first:

You’re bowling with your friend, and she scores a strike. It’s the first time she’s been bowling, and she wasn’t very confident, so you want to show her your support and encourage her.

So you say it:

British English Phrase #3: Nice one!

But hang on a second, isn’t this a post about phrases for stressful situations?

Well, that brings me round to the not-so-nice way of using this phrase.

You can use the phrase sarcastically. It’s quite common.

But I would advise against using it this way as it can be pretty aggressive and, well, not very nice.

In fact, it’s the kind of thing that Tony might say. (Remember Tony?)

Tony: middle-aged man frowning

Basically, Tony is not a nice guy.

One day you’re hanging out with Tony (not by choice, of course).

Because Tony’s pretty lazy, you’re the one getting the coffee from the bar.

You bring it over, but you spill your coffee all over the table.

Then he says it:

Huh. Nice one.

This has the opposite effect of encouraging your friend while she was bowling. It makes you feel worse and less confident.

It’s the same phrase, but the situation means that the phrase is sarcastic and negative.

It also means that Tony’s a jerk, and you shouldn’t hang out with him. Go hang out with Freya instead.

Don’t mess me around

What does it mean?

Have you ever had to deal with a particularly difficult piece of bureaucracy?

Like getting a residence permit, or trying to get permission to add that beautiful banana-shaped tower to your house?

The most extreme example I’ve experienced was getting a residence permit (in a country I won’t mention) about 10 years ago.

To get the permit, you have to go to a massive building full of people.

There’s no queuing system (a British nightmare), and no one speaks English (another British nightmare).

You have to push through massive families of 10 or more people to finally get to a small window with a very stressed cop behind it.

Then he tells you that you’re in the wrong place. You need to go to another office. On the other side of town, of course.

So you go there.

It’s empty and no one’s there.

You find a cleaner and find out that they take a 3-hour lunch break on Thursdays.

When they finally open again, they tell you to go back to the first building you went to.

How do you feel now?

You’ve wasted all this time for nothing, just because they don’t really know what they’re doing.

These guys have seriously been messing you around, right?

This phrase means “to cause problems, especially in an unfair way.”

How can I use it?

So, as you can see above, you can use this when someone makes you do all sorts of things unnecessarily — when there was probably an easier way.

But it also has another, slightly different meaning.

A common expression you might hear is “don’t mess me around!

We use this when we think someone is lying to us and trying to convince us to believe their lies.

Like if your kids try to explain why they weren’t at school by telling you that they were kidnapped by a giant polar bear who really wanted to show them his collection of small spoons.

British English Phrase #4: Don't mess me around!

I mean — that is awesome lying right there.

Although if they were my kids, I’d at least congratulate them on their imagination.

It does my head in

What does it mean?

When something annoys you or confuses you, you can say that it does your head in.

How can I use it?

OK. We kind of have the two situations — being annoyed and being confused.

Like when you have to listen to the same stupid song that they’re always playing on the radio. It’s so annoying! Why do they always play it? Everywhere you go it’s there — at the mall, in your favourite cafe, in cars as they drive past you.

So you can say, “That stupid song does my head in.”

Or when your kids are running around, screaming and generally going nuts, because you accidentally gave them too much sugar.

Calm down — you’re doing my head in!

You can also use it when you’re trying to understand a really complex thought — but … just … can’t.

The way the planets move around the sun does my head in.

British English Phrase #5: It does my head in

I mean — think about it.

They’re all moving around the sun — OK. No problem there.

But they’re also moving at different speeds. Can you picture that? OK. That’s fine, too.

But they’re also moving around the sun at different angles, too.

Can you picture that? Getting tricky now, right?

They’re also spinning at different speeds and angles and all the moons they have are also going around them at the same time.

Can you picture that?

I don’t know about you, but that just does my head in. I just can’t picture it.

                           What Is Stress?

We generally use the word «stress» when we feel that everything seems to have become too much — we are overloaded and wonder whether we really can cope with the pressures placed upon us. Anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being is a stress. Some stresses get you going and they are good for you — without any stress at all many say our lives would be boring and would probably feel pointless. However, when the stresses undermine both our mental and physical health they are bad. In this text we will be focusing on stress that is bad for you.

Fight or flight response

The way you respond to a challenge may also be a type of stress. Part of your response to a challenge is physiological and affects your physical state. When faced with a challenge or a threat, your body activates resources to protect you — to either get away as fast as you can, or fight. If you are upstairs at home and an earthquake starts, the faster you can get yourself and your family out the more likely you are all to survive. If you need to save somebody’s life during that earthquake, by lifting a heavy weight that has fallen on them during the earthquake, you will need components in your body to be activated to give you that extra strength -that extra push.

Our fight-or-flight response is our body’s sympathetic nervous system reacting to a stressful event. Our body produces larger quantities of the chemicals cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline, which trigger a higher heart rate, heightened muscle preparedness, sweating, and alertness — all these factors help us protect ourselves in a dangerous or challenging situation.

Non-essential body functions slow down, such as our digestive and immune systems when we are in fight-or flight response mode. All resources can then be concentrated on rapid breathing, blood flow, alertness and muscle use.

So, let’s recap, when we are stressed the following happens:

  • Blood pressure rises
  • Breathing becomes more rapid
  • Digestive system slows down
  • Heart rate (pulse) rises
  • Immune system goes down
  • Muscles become tense
  • We do not sleep (heightened state of alertness)

Most of us have varying interpretations of what stress is about and what matters. Some of us focus on what happens to us, such as breaking a bone or getting a promotion, while others think more about the event itself. What really matters are our thoughts about the situations in which we find ourselves.

We are continually sizing up situations that confront us in life. We assess each situation, deciding whether something is a threat, how we can deal with it and what resources we can use. If we conclude that the required resources needed to effectively deal with a situation are beyond what we have available, we say that that situation is stressful — and we react with a classical stress response. On the other hand, if we decide our available resources and skills are more than enough to deal with a situation, it is not seen as stressful to us.

Positive and Negative Stress

Signs of positive stress

1. Increased creativity: not only in making or creating things but also in developing new ways to solve problems or finding better ways of doing things.

2. Increased productivity at work and on a personal level.

3. A general feeling of wellbeing, happiness and joy. It is your birthright to lead a happy, fulfilled live during your stay here on earth.

4. An immune system that functions optimally and is able to resist illness, infections, and cancer. Even if you are surrounded by people carrying all sorts of germs, you simply will not become ill.

Warning signs of negative stress

1. Reduced productivity and creativity: nothing works the way it should. Everything is too much for you. You struggle or cannot find solution to problems. Because you are terrified of making the wrong decision, you end up not making any decision at all. You are unable to concentrate or remember things. Depression starts in much the same way.

1. What happens with processes in our body when we are stressed? (at least 3)

2. Name 3 chemicals that our body produces in larger quantities when we are stressed.

3. Which body functions slows down when we are under stress? (1 word — adjective)

4. What is stress?

5. Which types of response on stressful situation do you know?

Task 2.  Find the synonym in the text.

1. frighten, intimidate

2. weight, load, onus

               The Effects of Stress

There is a famous expression in English: «Stop the world, I want to get off!» This expression refers to a feeling of panic, or stress, that makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again. ‘Stress’ means pressure or tension. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life. Too much stress results in physical, emotional, and mental health problems.
There are numerous physical effects of stress. Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate, make the heart miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure. Stress can affect the respiratory system. It can lead to asthma. It can cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide. Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomach aches and problems digesting food. These are only a few examples of the wide range of illnesses and symptoms resulting from stress.

Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have panic attacks. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact to little problems. For example, a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass of juice. Stress can make people angry, moody, or nervous.
Long-term stress can lead to a variety of serious mental illnesses. Depression, an extreme feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress. Alcoholism and other addictions often develop as a result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress. Eating disorders, such as anorexia, are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one’s mental health is put at risk.
It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It attacks the body. It affects the emotions. Untreated, it may eventually result in mental illness. Stress has a great influence on the health and well-being of our bodies, our feelings, and our minds. So, reduce stress: stop the world and rest for a while.

                                   Stress

They say that «Life is a big headache on a long noisy road.» This statement truly explains life nowadays. Life in the twenty first century is full of stress. From dawn to dusk, everyone has to go through a rigorous schedule. Even children are not exempt from this rush. Everyday there are deadlines to meet, reports to write, bills to pay, meetings to attend, papers to submit, etc.,.

Life is a never-ending race to most people. The everyday grind builds up stress and fatigue. Stress Reduction has become a priority with individuals as well as organizations. People have different ways of escaping the stress and difficulties of modern life. In my opinion the best ways of reducing stress are meditation, exercise and reading books.

Meditation is an effective way to overcome stress. Meditation not only soothes the mind from tension but also regulates heartbeat and blood pressures. It helps an individual in attaining inner peace and equilibrium. Meditation helps in tapping a person’s inner potential and opens his mind to the universal spirit.

Exercise is another way to reduce stress. Exercising not only promotes health but also improves thinking. When a person exercises the muscles in the body get a workout that in turn burn fat. The burning of fat releases stored energy and the person has an exhilarating feeling. This feeling helps the person to overcome stress. Thus Exercise is very useful tool in stress reduction.

Reading also has a beneficial effect on individuals in stress. Reading a great book is very therapeutic to a person with stress. Reading helps the mind to look at other things and reduces the focus on the person’s difficulties. Elegant poetry and beautiful prose can soothe a person’s mind and help him reduce stress in his life.

In conclusion, meditation, exercise and reading are the best ways to reduce stress.

                                 Stress causes

Too much stress isn’t good for anyone. For example, feeling a little stress about a test that’s coming up can motivate you to study hard. But stressing out too much over the test can make it hard to concentrate on the material you need to learn.

Pressures that are too intense or last too long, or troubles that are shouldered alone, can cause people to feel stress overload. Here are some of the things that can overwhelm the body’s ability to cope if they continue for a long time:

1) being bullied or exposed to violence or injury

2) relationship stress, family conflicts, or the heavy emotions that can accompany a broken heart or the death of a loved one

3) ongoing problems with schoolwork related to a learning disability or other problems, such as ADHD (usually once the problem is recognized and the person is given the right learning support the stress disappears)

4) crammed schedules, not having enough time to rest and relax, and always being on the go

Some stressful situations can be extreme and may require special attention and care. Posttraumatic stress disorder is a very strong stress reaction that can develop in people who have lived through an extremely traumatic event, such as a serious car accident, a natural disaster like an earthquake, or an assault like rape.

Some people have anxiety problems that can cause them to overreact to stress, making even small difficulties seem like crises. If a person frequently feels tense, upset, worried, or stressed, it may be a sign of anxiety. Anxiety problems usually need attention, and many people turn to professional counselors for help in overcoming them.

Task 13. Answer the questions.

1) What traumatic events can you name?

2) How may people overcome anxiety problems?

3) What can cause people to feel stress overload?

4) What are signs of anxiety problems?

5) How can you explain the term “posttraumatic stress disorder”?

6) What are the things that make people feel stress overload?

Task 14 Complete the sentences.

                                  Stress

Every day you read in newspapers, books and magazines that it is important to avoid stress. Stress can kill, they say. Stay calm. Be relaxed. Slow down. Don’t worry so much and don’t work so hard. Unfortunately, this is difficult. There are always money problems and family problems. Our cities are full of traffic and noise. Stressful situations seem to be everywhere.

When people are under stress they react in different ways. Some people find it difficult to stay calm and often become tense. Little things, like a baby crying, can make them irritated. They get very annoyed if they have to wait just a few minutes too long in a shop or a restaurant. These people are usually very moody. One minute they are fine and the next they can be really angry – absolutely furious. Other people seem to stay calm almost all the time, and rarely get angry. For example, if they are caught in bad traffic, they don’t get frustrated. They sit calmly in their cars, telling themselves that there is nothing they can do about the situation. These people are not moody at all. They don’t change from moment to moment, but always seem to be in control of their emotions.

Some doctors give names to these two personality types: Type A and Type B people. Type A work very hard, worry a lot, and are often bad-tempered. Type  are the opposite. They don’t worry. Work’s not so important to them and they don’t get angry easily. They like to relax a lot and have fun. The doctors say it is better for your health and heart if you are a Type B person.

Task 17. Answer the questions.

1) What should you do to avoid stress?

2) Where can we get the stress?

3) What people are more prone to stress?

4) Is it necessary to control your own  emotions?

5) What advice do the doctors give for the prevention of stress?

6) Does the hard work influence the emotional state of person?

                     Dealing With Stress

We are profoundly affected by stress. Many believe that stress is one of the most destructive elements in our lives today. In reality, it is the way we react to stress that causes us pleasure or pain. The effects of stress can be positive or negative. Positive stress is a motivator for improving lifestyle and negative stress can be destructive to our health.

What is stress?

  • It is the nonspecific response of the body to any demands made upon it.
  • Stress can be detected by muscle tension, anxiety, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, shallow breathing, silliness and joy.

Positive outcomes of stress include:

Mental Improvement

Emotional Improvement

Physical Improvement

Creativity

Control of life

Energy

Intellect

Mood

Stamina

Goal orientation

Relationships

Able to do anything

Motivation

Experience emotions

Body function

When stress is negative, it causes distress. How we perceive an event is what determines whether it causes negative or positive stress. For some people, public speaking is exhilarating; for others it is terrifying.

Negative outcomes of stress:

Mental effects

Physical effects

Emotional effects

Poor memory

Flushed face

irritability

Unable to concentrate

Rapid breathing

Mood swings

Low self esteem

Dry mouth

Problems sleeping

depression

High blood pressure

Overweight/underweight

Unable to make decisions

Coronary heart disease

Substance abuse

ulcers

Ineffective use of time

migraines

Stress and weight gain

The stress response – in a stressful situation, the brain responds by signaling the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol. Cortisol signals the release of glucose and fatty acids to the blood stream to provide energy for muscles. Chronically high cortisol levels lead to increased appetite and fat deposits in the trunk and abdomen. (fight or flight response to a trigger to be used as a “burst” of energy, ends up stored as fat when not “burned” as fuel).

Stress and eating – appetite can increase with stress; we often crave foods high in calories and low in nutrients when under stress.

Suggestion to help solve stress induced weight gain

  1. Reduce stress- find a diversion or release
  2. Be active- regular physical activity reduces the production of cortisol during stress
  3. Be in charge – taking charge of the stressful situation reduces pressure you perceive
  4. Rest- when you are sleep deprived cortisol levels increase

Our mind and body are alkaline based. The hormones secreted by stress are acid based and when we are suffering from chronic stress our PH balance is shifted and we become more acid based than alkaline based. This can lead to a multitude of health problems including struggles with weight loss. A few ways to maintain your PH balance are listed below:

Food – choose foods that are blue, green and purple (Blueberries, beet tops, broccoli, eggplant, plums, asparagus) Take Green supplements to bridge the gap.

Music— listen to relaxing music (Bach, Beethoven, Schubert)

Meditative States— Yoga, tai chi, meditation, sleep, massage, laugh, play, walk in nature

Colour Therapy – Wear and look at colours in the blue, green and violet shades

Exercise – releases endorphins that make you feel good! It’s also something you are doing with and for yourself. Time away from the stressful situation can help you to refocus.

Most importantly, do something! Stress and lack of sleep are two of the biggest contributors to weight gain and many health concerns.

How to deal with stress?

Look around

See if there really is something you can change or control in the situation

Set realistic goals for yourself

Reduce the number of events going on in your life and you may reduce the circuit overload

Remove yourself from the stressful situation

Give yourself a break if only for a few moments daily

Don’t overwhelm yourself

by fretting about your entire workload. Handle each task as it comes, or selectively deal with matters in some priority

Don’t sweat the small stuff

Try to prioritize a few truly important things and let the rest slide

Learn how to best relax yourself

Meditation and breathing exercises have been proven to be very effective in controlling stress. Practice clearing your mind of disturbing thoughts.

Selectively change the way you react,

but not too much at one time. Focus on one troublesome thing and manage your reactions to it/him/her

Change the way you see your situation;

Seek alternative viewpoints. Stress is a reaction to events and problems, and you can lock yourself in to one way of viewing your situation. Seek an outside perspective of the situation, compare it with yours. and perhaps lessen your reaction to these conditions.

Avoid extreme reactions;

Why hate when a little dislike will do? Why generate anxiety when you can be nervous? Why rage when anger will do the job? Why be depressed when you can just be sad?

Do something for others

to help get your mind off yourself

Get enough sleep

Lack of rest just aggravates stress

Work off stress

with physical activity, whether it’s jogging, tennis, gardening

Avoid self-medication or escape

Alcohol and drugs can mask stress. They don’t help deal with the problems

Begin to manage the effects of stress

This is a long range strategy of adapting to your situation, and the effects of stress in your life. Try to isolate and work with one «effect» at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself. for example, if you are not sleeping well, seek help on this one problem.

Try to «use» stress

If you can’t remedy, nor escape from, what is bothering you, flow with it and try to use it in a productive way

Try to be positive

Give yourself messages as to how well you can cope rather than how horrible everything is going to be. «Stress can actually help memory, provided it is short-term and not too severe. Stress causes more glucose to be delivered to the brain, which makes more energy available to neurons. This, in turn, enhances memory formation and retrieval. On the other hand, if stress is prolonged, it can impede the glucose delivery and disrupt memory.»

Life is full of stressful situations. You may face minor stressors like the wrong take-out order at a restaurant. You may also have to deal with major stressors like struggling with your mental health. Knowing how to approach any type of stressful situation can help you maintain some control and reduce your level of stress and anxiety.

Explore the following 10 stressful situations you may face in life and accompanying ways you can deal with them to keep your calm and continue your personal growth.

1. The Restaurant Got Your Order Wrong

10 Stressful Situations and How to Deal With Them

Unless you cook all your meals at home, you will find yourself on the receiving end of the wrong order at a restaurant. While this may not be the most stressful life situation, it can cause anxiety.

If you experience guilt at the thought of sending your order back, mustering up the courage to tell your waiter can be a stressful experience. The best way to approach this situation is to work on being more assertive. Practicing assertiveness doesn’t mean you act mean or cruel. Rather, it simply means that you ask for what you want with confidence.

Next time this situation occurs, practice asking for what you want. You’ll feel better when you get the right order and feel less stressed about it every time you practice.

2. You Just Moved in With Your Partner

Moving in with your partner for the first time is exciting. It can also feel overwhelming and stressful. Combining finances, merging schedules, and getting to know each other as live-in companions is a huge transition that can take some time to get used to.

If you’re feeling stressed out after moving in with a partner, take some time to identify where your stress is coming from. Is the change in routine causing you to feel stressed? Are you having trouble adjusting to not living alone anymore? Are you worried about your partner judging you for your daily habits?

Whatever the reason, you need to identify it before you can address it. Once you figure out the source of stress, you can take steps to reduce the feeling, whether that means communicating with your partner or setting up some house rules to help you transition.

3. Your Kids Won’t Stop Fighting

10 Stressful Situations and How to Deal With Them

If you are a parent of multiple children, you know the stress of hearing your kids fight and bicker. If their interactions become unbearable, you have a few choices for how to deal with the situation.

If possible, step away and find a quiet spot to practice relaxing breathing exercises. This is an excellent way to calm your nerves and give you a second to regroup before talking to your kids.

When you are able, try going back to your kids and using active listening techniques to resolve their problems. Even young children benefit from having their parents truly listen to their concerns, and sometimes that’s all it takes to help them calm down and quit fighting with each other.

You can also try engaging in mindfulness activities with your kids to help them stop fighting and stressing everyone out. Try kids yoga or name your mood activity to help them express their emotions in a healthy way.

4. You Lost Your Job

Losing your job is one of the most stressful experiences you can have in life. According to the American Psychological Association, losing one’s job is tied to several mental health issues like depression and anxiety. It can also negatively impact your financial stability and physical health, which play into dissatisfaction in other areas of your life.

While there is no quick fix for losing your job, you can choose to take a proactive approach when it occurs. Give yourself a week or two to feel your emotions and more around, then develop an action plan to help you find new employment.

Try reframing the loss as a beneficial catalyst that is pushing you to explore new opportunities. This mindset change can help you move forward and may even lead to a better career in the long run.

5. You’re Struggling With Your Mental Health

10 Stressful Situations and How to Deal With Them

A significant life stressor is struggling with your mental health. Experiencing mental health issues like depression, anxiety, obsessiveness, intrusive thoughts, or addiction can leave you feeling unhappy, worn out, and unable to cope with life’s normal ups and downs.

If you are struggling with your mental health, it is vital that you seek professional help. Working with a trained therapist is the best way to learn how to cope with adverse mental health issues and get to a better place. You can also try mindfulness activities like yoga, meditation, and guided visualization to calm your mind and promote mental clarity.

6. Your Car Just Broke Down

Having your car break down is a super stressor in life. If you don’t live near a public transportation system (and even if you do), your car likely provides you with the means to get to and from work, buy groceries and visit family and friends. Fixing a broken car can cost around $600 or more, leading to financial worry and stress on top of everything else.

The best way to deal with the stress of a broken-down car is preventative maintenance and access to fix-it funds. There’s not much you can do at the moment of breakdown, but if you consider putting away a few hundred dollars for emergencies and having your car looked at a few times per year, the stress of having your car break doesn’t won’t impact you as intensely.

7. You’re Going Through a Breakup

10 Stressful Situations and How to Deal With Them

Breakups, including divorces, are one of the hardest situations you can face in life. Losing a relationship means losing more than just the companionship of a person you loved, it also means mourning the loss of the life you imagined with them.

Post-breakup, it is important that you allow yourself to work through the cycle of grief. Many people try to move on quickly as if that will minimize or erase the pain.

Sometimes, the only way to make it through the pain of a breakup is to let yourself feel the pain. Only then can you truly process the loss and move on for good when your mind, body, and spirit are ready.

8. You Are Struggling to Pay the Bills

Financial hardship places enormous stress on anyone who experiences it. Falling behind on bills creates pressure and anxiety, and can cause you to feel shame and unworthiness. All of these emotions can negatively affect your relationships, performance at work, and many other aspects of your life.

The best way to approach financial hardship is to try and remove your emotions about the situation and look at the numbers. If you haven’t already, make a budget for your finances and cut back where you can. If you need to, start applying for part-time work that can supplement your income. Even if you only work for a short period of time, it can give you a boost and get your finances back on track.

9. You’re Feeling Overwhelmed at School or Work

10 Stressful Situations and How to Deal With Them

Sometimes feeling overwhelmed at school or work can get the best of you. Everyday pressure can take its toll, especially if a big project is due, your job titles change, or your personal life is interfering with your ability to focus.

If you feel overwhelmed and stressed with your responsibilities, you may need to take some time off and regroup. Whether that means traveling and learning how to relax on vacation or creating a relaxing space where you can unwind at home, giving your head a break can help you press the reset button and stop feeling so stressed out.

10. You’ve Lost a Loved One

Losing a loved one goes beyond normal stress. It is one of the most challenging experiences you may have to face in your life. After a loved one passes, you can expect to feel a wide range of emotions like fear, anger, stress, anxiety, relief, or depression. If not addressed, this rollercoaster can have devastating effects on your ability to move forward.

One healthy coping mechanism you can turn to handle the stress of losing a loved one is to make a point of celebrating their life. You can do this by throwing an unofficial remembrance party for their friends and family. You can also express your feelings creatively, through singing, writing, or drawing. The more you become comfortable expressing and experiencing your grief, the better you will cope with the loss of someone you care about.

Remember, You Can Choose How You React

The truth is that stressful situations happen in life. While you can’t prevent them from occurring, you can choose how you react when they happen. Try to deal with your frustration in a healthy way including proactive planning, reframing, and accepting that you may have to sit with the feeling until it passes.

You can also benefit from using stress-reducing exercises and a logical approach to resolve your stressful situation. These solutions help you make the best of everything that happens and improve your contentment with life.
