[TOMT][WORD] A verb that means to speak badly of someone, intentionally and extremely spitefully
It’s an especially «fancy» word that’s quite literally on the top of my tongue
Similar words would be disparage, but more malicious, depreciate, but more intended towards a person, defame, but more… «fancy»
Derogatory would be it but that’s an adjective and the word I’m looking for is definitely a word.
Also I’m fairly certain it starts with a D as well
Tried google and some thesauruses but couldn’t find it.
There is a word to call this kind of person:
- habitually say bad things about other people, ONLY when the said people are not present
- always excited to spread rumors, especially the bad things about some people he/she does not like
The word is something like «long tongue» or something like that, but I just cannot recall.

backbite
to talk spitefully about (an absent person)
And the person is a backbiter.
Backbiting may occur as a form of release after a confrontation. By insulting the opposing person, the backbiter diminishes them and, by doing so, restores their own self-esteem.

Perhaps you just mean gossiping? Or some variation like tattletale?

Political correctness apart, such a person can be called ‘a denigrator’, from the verb ‘to denigrate’, from Latin ‘denigrare’ from ‘niger’, ‘black’. So, ‘denigrating someone or something’ is ‘painting it or them black’… that is, blacker than they are, which I could not find in a dictionary as an idiom, but I found the following related idiom in the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English
not be as black as you are painted not to be as bad as people say you are
However, ‘denigrating someone’ can be done in the person’s presence as well as behind their back, whereas ‘gossiping’ is strictly behind people’s backs.

You could say that person has a spiteful tongue.
spiteful: spiteful implies a deep-seated malice or malevolence provoked by a desire to get even with others for real or fancied offenses; it suggests meanness or venomousness and refers more often to utterances than to acts: spiteful gossip; she has a spiteful tongue
Alternately, consider catty.
catty: spiteful, mean, malicious
She’s catty about people.

Hello everyone,
I’ve seen the expressions «speak well of somebody» and «speak badly of somebody» in dictionaries, but a friend of mine told me they’re not common in everyday English, and sound old-fashioned. My question is: are these expressions, in the contexts below, commonly used and natural? If not, what would you suggest?
1. He speaks badly of his friends behind their back.
Explanation
= he says bad things about his friends, he criticizes his friends, bad-mouths them.
2. I always speak well of you. Explanation = I always say good things about you, a show appreciation to you when I talk about you, etc.
Thank you very much in advance!

I think both sentences sound fine. Judging any statement’s worth depends on what you’re trying to do with it. Neither sentence sounds «racy» or «slangy» or even very colloquial. Both sentences sound like normal English as spoken by somebody who doesn’t care much about sounding trendy.

I agree, but I might go so far as to say they sound like they were spoken by someone who was fairly well-educated, or was brought up by well-educated parents.
I think «speak well of» is fairly common, but I imagine hearing «speak ill of» more often than «speak badly of.»

Thank you very much. I thought «speak ill of» was old-fashioned, good to know it’s commonly used. I once heard Madonna saying «speak bad of«. Is it informally common?

#5
Yes, it is. She talks bad about you. They want it bad. etc.

It may be common, but only among performers and people who do not speak correct English.
