I suppose, most of us (including me) work in big companies where many people are employed for different positions. Usually every big company has a number of separate departments with a manager at the head. In one of the departments, imagine, you are working and some more people doing nearly the same work as you. What is the best word (or words) to call these people: They are

1. Your workmates
2. Your colleagues
3. Your associates
4. Your counterparts

If possible, please, indicate the words most often used in the UK and the USA, respectively.

Thanks in advance

Usually «counterparts» is used to refer to people doing work that is in some way similar or equivalent but who work in a different department, company, or area.

I would say that «colleagues» is the closest, suggesting roughly similar rank. «Workmates» does not suggest a similar rank or function in the least; and «associates» is even less specific.

    • #3

I believe «colleagues» is fairly standard in an academic context. Most faculty members use this term in correspondence.

«Counterpart» makes me think of someone who does the same job as me, but in a different department. My counterparts in the English department may disagree.

I see that the word «counterpart» is about peoply working somewhere else, not together with you. In fact, I also considered the word «colleague» to be the closest for conveying our similar status with these people (you work with).

How about «associates» and «workmates»? When are these words used concerning people’s connections with each other at work?

I think that «co-workers» would be the most common in the US.

To me «associate» sounds more like a partner.
And I believe that «workmate» is a BE term.

I would say «co-workers», or possibly «colleagues». A far less common possibility would be to describe someone as a «fellow employee» or a «fellow worker». I have never heard of a «workmate» before this thread.

Coworkers is the most common here in the US, and it encompasses all the positions at the same office. Colleagues tends to describe people who are at your same level and do the same or similar job.

    • #10

In my bit of BE, colleague is a general term that refers to a wide range of people up and down the organisation.
It’s a long time since I have heard of coworkers — the preferred AE term, I believe. Routinely written with no hyphen it always makes me want to re-present as cow-workers.

    • #11

    A colleague

Just someone you work with, in a close(ish kind of setting)
    Extremely broad term

    A workmate

This is a friend that you have from work, you would get to know people as colleagues, and then become friends, then it’s your «mate from work» or «workmate».
This can be people who work very close to you, but it might be someone you meet 3 times a week at dinnertime in the canteen, you don’t have to be close to them, but if you are friends and it’s where you met, when you go out you can say «he’s a workmate».

    Associate

It’s a bit odd to use this referring to people, it just implies a lose kind of connection, it describes like a colleague but it means they are even less close to you, less connected.

    Counterparts

These people have a similar job in a different place, they usually have a responsibility for a different area, I work in the North West of my job, and there are 6 teams, so let’s say my boss, has a job title called Area Manager, there are 6, and each one is a counterpart.
Also in a different company, the same job title is a counterpart, but if no business is being done between the companies, it generally isn’t used, as it implies at least a tiny connection.

Thanks a lot for your commentaries. I think there is something else to add to our discussion. Today I have looked up these words in Collins and Cambridge monolingual (English-English) dictionaries. Most of what you all have suggested so far coincides with the definitions provided there.

    1. Mainly, it concerns the term «counterpart«, which is used to describe someone who engages in (almost) the same work as you but in another place, at least, not where you work. Both dictionaries contain the example with the Prime Minister: English Prime Minister and his Chinese counterpart. This example is very vivid, in my opinion, and shows the right way to use this word.

    2. Regarding the word «associate» it is defined as «people you are closely connected with especially at work». To tell the truth, the definition of «colleague» is absolutely the same (Collins dictionary). Both editions, as we see now, do not distinguish between the two notions. It is very interesting since Alex_Murphy said that an associate is (or may be) slightly less close to you than a colleague. This point may indicate his own understanding of these terms, it does not really matter. Very often to me (this time, I suppose, no exception) the opinion of natives is more plausible and important because it allows us, learners, to realize how this word is really used in everyday life. Collins and any other professional edition of this kind may ignore such subtle differences.

    3. «Workmate» is defined simply as someone you work with and, in fact, nothing else to add. However, there are two peculiarities about «workmate»: it is specified as typically British and Informal. Perhaps, sometimes it comprises the words «colleague»,»associate». No wonder, that the Americans, e.g. GreenWhiteBlue from New York, have never heard it — the word originates from the British English. At the same time «co-worker» is the word widespread in the USA therefore panjadrum’s assumption is also quite clear.

    Thanks again for the replies.

Another term I have been hearing is teammate or team member.

Another term I have been hearing is teammate or team member.

Yes, the logic is clear here. I also know the term «team player» which has been borrowed from sports games where there is a team (football, basketball, etc.). I think, if you call someone a teammate/team member or team player you want to emphasize not only his profession, position in a particular company but more likely his personal qualities. If I heard that someone is a team player I would think that he is capable of working in a team consisting of a number of experts who are doing similar job to his. A team player / team member must be respectful, responsible, sociable and have enough professional skills to succeed.

A team player is someone who works for the betterment of the team. A team member is someone who has either been assigned to, or asked to work in a specific team. There seems to be no deeper meaning to the term teammate than the fact that all are working for the same department in an organization.

Are these words («teammate», «team member») exclusively American or they are used throughout the English-speaking world?

This must be an easy one, but I can only think of specialized alternatives at the moment: what do you call someone you are about to have a meeting with? Meetee?

In more specific contexts client, friend, date would all work, but they convey more than the fact that you will just be meeting. I’ve heard appointment used in that sense (as in «your next appointment is waiting outside«, but the ambiguity (appointment being a lose synonym for meeting) is not really satisfactory.

    I think Conferee might work.

Also, you could use participant, visitor, or caller, though participant implies they are already in the meeting, rather than someone you will be meeting with, and the other two imply the meeting will happen at your location.

If someone is coming to see you there will quite obviously be a ‘meeting’. But why not refer to them as your ‘visitor’. Or more simply still ‘I’m afraid I shall not be available because I have someone coming to see me at 3.00pm’ — or ‘I am meeting with someone at 3.00pm’.
