Word for soft smile

level 1

This is one of those times where you need to stop being a perfectionist.

“Smiled softly” conveys a very specific image that no other phrase can accurately convey. Yeah, it uses an adverb. Oh well.

level 2

this is true hahaha as a new writer you hear adverbs = bad and start doubting every adverb you use

level 2

A gentle smile. I would need to know more of where it needs to be put into the sentence and the feeling behind this part of your book

level 1

I wouldn’t say “to herself” I’d just say she smiles softly. The context implies she’s alone.

level 1

Faint smile. Wavering smile. Weak smile. Perhaps I’ve misunderstood the meaning of smiling softly, but those are descriptive words I use most for smiling

level 1

If the adverb changes the action, it can stay. ‘Smiles softly’ is fine because it gives us context into how the smile looks and the intentions behind it

level 1

I’d keep it. It’s not like using an adverb is universally bad. Like Strunk and White says, don’t put in an adverb you wouldn’t use in spoken English, and «smile softly» is definitely one I could see myself using.

level 2

this makes sense. cheers mate

level 1

Maybe, a smile tugs on the corner of her mouth

level 1

‘softly to herself’ could be ‘secretly’

level 1

Does this character think in her POV that she’s in the right for checking on this guy (as in, she thinks it’s romantic), or does she know that she’s stalking him and shouldn’t be?

To me, using smirked or grinned would indicate that she knows she shouldn’t be doing this and that she’s getting away with something. But a simple “she smiles for a moment and wonders…” would indicate a soft, quick smile of affection or naivety.

level 2

yeah they’ve already agreed to going on a date etc so her looking at his profile is completely harmless with nothing sinister.

level 1

You could just drop the adverb and say she smiled to herself. That’s probably the most straightforward way to say it.

level 2

Yeah, I’m not entirely sure what the difference is supposed to be between someone smiling to themselves and smiling softly to themselves. A massive Joker-esque grin would be so creepy and unnatural. I think this is one of those cases where you can look to subtext to tell you what is expected, then ask yourself if you really need to specify that the character is doing the thing the reader will already most naturally expect.

All that aside though, this is way too much thought and energy to put into such a short sentence. Either way is fine unless this is part of a short story that is expected to meet the strictest quality control standards.

Just keep writing.

level 1

In my opinion, I would seek a different method of integrating the action into the scene. For example, a character «smiling softly» doesn’t really tell the reader much. In this sentence,

«She smiles softly to herself and wonders if he’s done the same with her profile.»

It would better serve the reader if the action of smiling is connected to a thought.

For example:

«She smiles softly to herself, wondering if he’s doing the same thing with her profile.»

Or:

«A little green circle next to his username indicates that he’s currently online. She smiles softly, wondering if he, at this very moment, is also browsing her profile.»

Or:

«A little green circle next to his username indicates that he’s currently online. She wonders if he, at this very moment, is also browsing her profile, and a soft smile creeps onto her face.»

level 1

a subdued twinkle.

the faint up-curving of her cupid’s bow lips.

level 1

«She had a soft smile on her face and wondered if he was doing the same with her profile». Anymore than that you are just procrastinating lol

level 1

I’m not even sure I know what smiling softly actually means. Especially if you’re doing it alone.

I can’t really feel myself smile because I’ve done it so many times. Like you have to focus on your eyes to feel yourself blinking.

When it’s like that, I try to imagine the opposite. What would smiling harshly or roughly look like?

I tend to use things like ‘smirk’ or chewing lips, pondering or ‘satisfied, her lips twisted into a crooked smile’ to try to insert some more psychology into the entire thing.

level 2

The smirk or crooked smile, however, convey in this case very different psychology. If I’d read smirk or crooked smile, I assume bit more impish or mischievous mindset. When someone is smiling softly, it’s the kind of gentle little moment of internal happiness that peeks on your face (in my opinion).

But because the real cues for smiling softly are so small (I’m making faces here while I write this…), I don’t believe it’s easy (or even possible) to convey the same meaning with trying to go details of what happens on the face. The more visible cues for smiling tend to mean for both reader and the smiler much stronger emotion.

level 1

You could just say «a small smile forms on her face» or if you want to go less directly, «the corners of her lips turn upwards».

The idea for the Describing Words engine came when I was building the engine for Related Words (it’s like a thesaurus, but gives you a much broader set of related words, rather than just synonyms). While playing around with word vectors and the «HasProperty» API of conceptnet, I had a bit of fun trying to get the adjectives which commonly describe a word. Eventually I realised that there’s a much better way of doing this: parse books!

Project Gutenberg was the initial corpus, but the parser got greedier and greedier and I ended up feeding it somewhere around 100 gigabytes of text files — mostly fiction, including many contemporary works. The parser simply looks through each book and pulls out the various descriptions of nouns.

Hopefully it’s more than just a novelty and some people will actually find it useful for their writing and brainstorming, but one neat little thing to try is to compare two nouns which are similar, but different in some significant way — for example, gender is interesting: «woman» versus «man» and «boy» versus «girl». On an inital quick analysis it seems that authors of fiction are at least 4x more likely to describe women (as opposed to men) with beauty-related terms (regarding their weight, features and general attractiveness). In fact, «beautiful» is possibly the most widely used adjective for women in all of the world’s literature, which is quite in line with the general unidimensional representation of women in many other media forms. If anyone wants to do further research into this, let me know and I can give you a lot more data (for example, there are about 25000 different entries for «woman» — too many to show here).

The blueness of the results represents their relative frequency. You can hover over an item for a second and the frequency score should pop up. The «uniqueness» sorting is default, and thanks to my Complicated Algorithm™, it orders them by the adjectives’ uniqueness to that particular noun relative to other nouns (it’s actually pretty simple). As you’d expect, you can click the «Sort By Usage Frequency» button to adjectives by their usage frequency for that noun.

The Urban Thesaurus was created by indexing millions of different slang terms which are defined on sites like Urban Dictionary. These indexes are then used to find usage correlations between slang terms. The official Urban Dictionary API is used to show the hover-definitions. Note that this thesaurus is not in any way affiliated with Urban Dictionary.

Due to the way the algorithm works, the thesaurus gives you mostly related slang words, rather than exact synonyms. The higher the terms are in the list, the more likely that they’re relevant to the word or phrase that you searched for. The search algorithm handles phrases and strings of words quite well, so for example if you want words that are related to lol and rofl you can type in lol rofl and it should give you a pile of related slang terms. Or you might try boyfriend or girlfriend to get words that can mean either one of these (e.g. bae). Please also note that due to the nature of the internet (and especially UD), there will often be many terrible and offensive terms in the results.

There is still lots of work to be done to get this slang thesaurus to give consistently good results, but I think it’s at the stage where it could be useful to people, which is why I released it.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: @krisk, @HubSpot, and @mongodb.
