Is there a concise word for the act of sacrificing one’s own life for the greater good? I know martyrdom, but that tends to imply suffering more than it does death.

There is self-sacrifice but it is not exactly a single world. Just suggesting it, in case it suits your purpose.

I think we can use the word ‘altruism’ or ‘altruistic suicide’. The term ‘altruism’ was first used by Emile Durkheim to describe a Suicide committed for the benefit of others or for the community: this would include self-sacrifice for military objectives in wartime. Altruistic suicides reflect a courageous indifference to the loss of one’s life. Altruistic behaviour is found in many other species of animals too.

What do you call a person who is sacrificed?
2. votes. Sacrificial – sacrificatorio. “Sacrificatorio” is a very unusual term (not most dictionaries, not even in the RAE), since “sacrificial” is more common one, but in any case, it would say it suggests a real sacrifice, e.g. to the Gods. Here, for people, I’d use “sacrificado”.

Self-sacrifice is giving up something you want or something you desire for the greater good or to help others. An example of self-sacrifice is when you go without your morning latte so you can donate that amount of money to charity instead.

What are the benefits of self-sacrifice?
Not only can self-sacrifice lead to greater happiness, it can also strengthen one’s “willpower muscle” in the long term. Numerous studies have demonstrated that when an individual exercises self-restraint or self-control in one area, their ability to do so in all capacities is increased.
Is self-sacrifice a virtue?

While nearly anyone might have the potential to make a sacrifice on the behalf of another, it is a true character strength of only some. A true self-sacrifice does not diminish others; it builds upon the dignity of others. Self-sacrifice is also trait-like.
What is a good character trait?
What is good character? Good character includes traits like loyalty, honesty, courage, integrity, fortitude, and other important virtues that promote good behavior. A person with good character chooses to do the right thing because he or she believes it is the morally right to do so.

What are character traits? Well, they’re the parts of a person’s behavior and attitude that makes up their personality. Everyone has character traits, both good and bad, even characters in books. Character traits are often shown with descriptive adjectives, like patient, faithful, or jealous.
What makes a character unique?
Unique Characters Are Unique to Their Core Either the characters are meant to evoke those characters belonging to someone else, or they aren’t. The problem compounds because some fanfic authors think they’ve made the characters their own by having “their version” of the original characters.

The way Reverse Dictionary works is pretty simple. It simply looks through tonnes of dictionary definitions and grabs the ones that most closely match your search query. For example, if you type something like «longing for a time in the past», then the engine will return «nostalgia». The engine has indexed several million definitions so far, and at this stage it’s starting to give consistently good results (though it may return weird results sometimes). It acts a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search with a definition, rather than a single word. So in a sense, this tool is a «search engine for words», or a sentence to word converter.
I made this tool after working on Related Words which is a very similar tool, except it uses a bunch of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words to a search query. That project is closer to a thesaurus in the sense that it returns synonyms for a word (or short phrase) query, but it also returns many broadly related words that aren’t included in thesauri. So this project, Reverse Dictionary, is meant to go hand-in-hand with Related Words to act as a word-finding and brainstorming toolset. For those interested, I also developed Describing Words which helps you find adjectives and interesting descriptors for things (e.g. waves, sunsets, trees, etc.).
In case you didn’t notice, you can click on words in the search results and you’ll be presented with the definition of that word (if available). The definitions are sourced from the famous and open-source WordNet database, so a huge thanks to the many contributors for creating such an awesome free resource.
Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: Elastic Search, @HubSpot, WordNet, and @mongodb.
