hello, this is the context:

<<I just picked up my regalia. My robes are cool. They have an extra pouch on both sleeves that hangs down past the hands. It’s good for storing munchies during long events. Oh the benefits bestowed on me for getting a higher education!
Disclaimer: I’m not really going to put snacks in the pouches. But the people helping me with regalia said they found a granoala bar one time. My only question: was it the healthy grain and fruit kind or the pointless candy kind? Yes. Higher education has let me cut to the quick of the matter.>>

«has let me cut to the quick of the matter» means something like «has made me bright and quick»?
Please somebody analyze this sentence, especially the meaning of «cut» in this case. Thank you in advance.

    Hello Almostfreebird —
In this context «cut to the quick» is used to mean «focus on the core issue»
Cut — meaning to cut through the surface issues to the center or core issue — What kind of granola bar was it?

«To cut to the quick» literally means to trim (cut) a fingernail down to the nailbed, the living tissue that bleeds — the «quick» is the living flesh.

It can also be used in the sense of hurting a persons feelings very deeply, their feelings (their quick, their heart) are so injured (cut) that they are bleeding.

Wikipedia has a good article listing the etymology & use of the phrase.

Thanks for the quick response, lizzie. I didn’t know the quick is the living flesh.

By the way, should I write «I didn’t know the quick was the living flesh» strictly?

I think the technical answer is Yes, but I know exactly what you mean ;-)

By the way «cut to the quick» means «don’t beat around the bush», «cut to the point», or «stay focused on what you’re saying/doing.» :)

That is odd, in AE it does not have those meanings at all.

We would say «Cut to the chase» to mean to get directly to the point without wasting any more time. It is a phrase from film making, meaning to cut to (go to) the action (chase) scenes, the climax of the movie.

I can’t think of any «cut to» phrase that means to stay focussed.
    Perhaps they are BE expressions?

Perhaps you’re right lizzey. Aside from your note, can «cut to the quick» be used as below?

He cut me to the quick with that unkind remark.

It would mean to say something that hurts someone.

Yes, that is an excellent example.
You are claiming a great injury to the depths of your heart & soul.
It is just a tiny bit old-fashioned & slightly dramamtic.
My mother says I have cut her to the quick when I don’t love something she has cooked for me.
    ;-)

Surely this is a mistaken mixture of metaphors:
    cut to the chase,
    cut to the quick,
    the heart of the matter.

I have never heard anyone say «cut to the quick of the matter».

    • #10

There is no saying ‘cut to the quick of the matter ‘ that i know of.
My usage of ‘cut to the quick’ would be when I am upset. The ‘quick’ to me would represent the spirit, the soul, the very core of your being as in the Bible references to the ‘quickening’ which I understand to mean the spirit leaving the body in death. So ‘cut to the quick’ would be interpreted to mean hurt to the core or soul.

Thanks, Angelica, and welcome to the forum.

You confirm panjandrum’s point earlier. And thus the Cambridge Idioms Dictionary:

cut somebody to the quick (old-fashioned)
to upset someone by criticizing them (usually passive) I was cut to the quick by her harsh remarks.

the Bible references to the ‘quickening’ which I understand to mean the spirit leaving the body in death.

No, the Biblical sense is of giving life/spirit to (dead) flesh.

The OP, who is a physicist, asks:

Is there a word for the action of moving through the easiest path?
    I’ve found «desire path» or «trail blazing», which comes close to the
concept I’m looking for, but it lacks any amount of poetry.
    (emphasis added}.

I suggest the primrose path, which comes from Shakespeare. A problem with my answer is immediately obvious in the last six words in this definition from Wikipedia:

The primrose path refers to a life of ease and pleasure, or to a
course of action that seems easy and appropriate but can actually end
    in calamity. (emphasis added).

If I knew how to put the last six words in tiny type, I would have. But physicists have had no problem with co-opting English words and assigning completely different meanings to them: color, charm, flavor. Thus, I see no reason why the OP physicist could not co-opt the primrose path and change its meaning to omit the bad consequences of tripping along it.

I shall the effect of this good lesson keep,

Whiles, like a puff’d and reckless libertine,

Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads,

And recks not his own rede
