Word for putting a fire out

  • #1

Hello,
I wonder if «douse a fire» menas to stop the fire only using water?
The synonyms of douse are «to pour» which makes me think this way.
What are the proper words for stopping a fire without use of water or any liquid?

    I say «put the fire out».

Professional fire-fighters may use other words, for specific types of fire.

«Extinguish» is commonly used as a synonym for «putting out» a fire or a flame. I don’t think «douse» means «to pour». Have you checked in the dictionary? It’s the kind of word you might go through life without ever feeling the need to use .

Checking the dictionary proved interesting! As far as water goes, it sounds more like a drenching, either by throwing water or immersing fully .. which is what I knew already … but lo and behold, the dictionary also says douse means «extinguish» too … no water required, as in dousing a candle. You live and learn, eh!

Even so I am not sure many of us would collocate douse and fire without thinking of water.

It seems you could maybe throw a blanket over a bigger fire and still say you had doused it.

In AE, we call it «smothering a fire» to stop it by throwing a blanket over it…or by shoveling sand onto it: that is «smothering» too.

«Dousing» is pouring water over (I «extinguish» candles with my fingers, I don’t douse them).

    Using a fire extinguisher (a blast of super-cold CO2, I believe) I call «using a fire extinguisher».

And any method that ends the fire is «putting out the fire».

It’s the same in Australian English, doji, although we do use ‘douse’ for any liquid, not just water. We could, for example, douse a fire with petrol or kerosene, but I kinda get the feeling it wouldn’t put it out. :D
