Word for person who loves music

  • #1

Hello to all,

Is there a word or an idiom for a person who really loves music listens to various styles of it?

For example, a person who loves cinema is called a movie buff.

I am looking for a colorful and interesting sentence I can use instead of this:

My friend Joe really loves music.

This is for speaking. You may ask why «loves music» does not work for me.

I always would like to find creative and different ways of expressing ideas and feelings and situations.
I also love using idioms.

Also, is it correct to say this? :

Listening to music really peps me up.

Also, is it correct to say this? :

Listening to music really peps me up.

Yes, you can say that. Also, in response to the other question, you could use music lover, but I guess you’re looking for something more creative.

Don’t use that. Nobody knows what it means.

I had never seen it before Glizdka first posted it here.

  • #8

Neither had I, though it’s a real word. [link]

Collins says it’s British usage, but I’m British and I’ve been a music lover for seven decades and it’s a new one on me.

  • #9

So, is there no idiom that can be used here?

  • #10

For example, a person who loves cinema is called a movie buff.

I’m going to be pedantic and pretentious now.

Someone who consumes a lot of films may be called a film buff or movie buff. While I’m being pretentious, I’ll say that I don’t like the American word movie although it is very commonly used. For me, it has connotations of Hollywood. I suggest you use the more international word film.

Somebody who has a serious interest in and love of cinema as an art form may be called a cinephile.

As for someone who loves music, I think music lover is the best word. I’d never heard the word melomaniac.

  • #11

But there must be a creative and interesting way of saying a person loves music.

  • #12

What do you mean by ‘creative and interesting’?

By ‘creative’, do you mean ‘novel’? Are you asking for a way that nobody has ever used before? The thing about language is that you can be infinitely creative with it.

Whether something is interesting is really subjective. I don’t think you actually mean that here.

But there must be a creative and interesting way of saying a person loves music.

Why must there be one? Do you think we have a list of «creative and interesting ways of saying» everything? Of course we don’t.

I’d never heard of melomaniac until this thread either. In fact, if someone said it to me, I would probably think I’d misheard/they’d mispronounced «megalomaniac»! My only suggestion uses a word that’s already been mentioned — music buff. My friend’s boyfriend is frequently described as such because he knows a lot about all sorts of music and he’s really useful at a pub quiz!

I’d stick with music lover — it’s simple and unpretentious. Using a word ending in -phile is fine when it’s in common usage, like bibliophile, but musicophile just feels a little affected.
