Word for one after the next

The way Reverse Dictionary works is pretty simple. It simply looks through tonnes of dictionary definitions and grabs the ones that most closely match your search query. For example, if you type something like «longing for a time in the past», then the engine will return «nostalgia». The engine has indexed several million definitions so far, and at this stage it’s starting to give consistently good results (though it may return weird results sometimes). It acts a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search with a definition, rather than a single word. So in a sense, this tool is a «search engine for words», or a sentence to word converter.

I made this tool after working on Related Words which is a very similar tool, except it uses a bunch of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words to a search query. That project is closer to a thesaurus in the sense that it returns synonyms for a word (or short phrase) query, but it also returns many broadly related words that aren’t included in thesauri. So this project, Reverse Dictionary, is meant to go hand-in-hand with Related Words to act as a word-finding and brainstorming toolset. For those interested, I also developed Describing Words which helps you find adjectives and interesting descriptors for things (e.g. waves, sunsets, trees, etc.).

In case you didn’t notice, you can click on words in the search results and you’ll be presented with the definition of that word (if available). The definitions are sourced from the famous and open-source WordNet database, so a huge thanks to the many contributors for creating such an awesome free resource.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: Elastic Search, @HubSpot, WordNet, and @mongodb.

Please note that Reverse Dictionary uses third party scripts (such as Google Analytics and advertisements) which use cookies. To learn more, see the privacy policy.

When I was making a PowerPoint presentation I was directing the reader to the slide after the next one when I realised it sounded incredibly clunky and if there was a specific word for that concept, in the vein of penultimate. This could also be used for items in a list. Example sentence:

To discover how I coded this program please consult the _______ slide.

«Subsequent» means «to follow» and is commonly used in cases like your example:

«To discover how I coded this program please consult the subsequent slide.»

Definition and origin from MW-O:

«following in time, order, or place»

  • subsequent events
  • a subsequent clause in the treaty

Origin of SUBSEQUENT

Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin subsequent-, subsequens, present participle of subsequi to follow close, from sub- near + sequi to follow — more at sub-, sue
First Known Use: 15th century

How about «…the second slide following.» Truthfully, not every meaning can be captured in a single word.

In computer science, I think next next is somewhat common, but I don’t think it’s really used in other applications. However, that might be the most succinct term. Using it for your example, you’d get:

To discover how I coded this program please consult the next-next slide.

Other sites seem to uniformly use the form X after the next. For example:

To discover how I coded this program please consult the slide after the next.

I know this isn’t a single word, but seems to be the most accepted usage.

Once again, not a single word, but baseball fans refer to the next batter as «on deck» and the following batter as «in the hole.»

I would use «refer» rather than «consult», but either is okay.

To discover how I coded this program please refer to the 2nd slide over.

To discover how I coded this program please refer to the slide after next.

I am involved with a special linguistic protocol that does not allow the use of any kind of time, or dates. I can, however, use the word, «next.» In other words, I cannot say, «Christmas of year 2005,» but I CAN say, «next Christmas.» Another example: I cannot say, «tomorrow’s sunrise,» or, «Saturday’s sunrise,» or, «Sunrise on September 1st.» But, I CAN say, «next,» sunrise.
Here’s my question: Is there a word meaning, «the next AFTER the next?»

Thank you!!

Here’s my question: Is there a word meaning, «the next AFTER the next?»

Phrase: «next but one», also sometimes written next-but-one. For example, the next-but-one house is two houses away down the street. This contrasts with last-but-one, which means «one before the last one».
Word: Postultimate — not sure if it’s officially a word. Extrapolated from the word «penultimate» meaning last-but-one.

I like it very much, but I’m afraid it’s nonsense. If you’ve got a succeeding thing, then the one before it isn’t ultimate. It’d be like calling the fourth thing the third, or something like that.

Mike.

Why not use a (fairly) common British construction? Next, next but one, next but two, next but three, etc.

Maybe one has not been invented, yet? :-)

The ordinals «second» etc will often do the job. Not always, of course; then «following» will often do. And, of course, in the right context a common word for the next after the next is «next»! I suspect, though, that you aren’t allowed to use any of these: perhaps you could tell us why they won’t do for your purpose.

Mike.

I’m wondering why it has to be only one word. As Mike said, «following» would be appropriate, but to use it, you’d need to preface it with «the» or «and» or some word to cause the grammar to «fit», e.g., «next Christmas and Christmas following» or «the following Christmas».

LAST
1.108

Last входит в смысловой ряд ‘the first, the second… the last’, а next образует «пару» с прилагательным previous. Оба слова также часто относят к определителям и тогда их можно рассматривать как «смысловую пару».

1. Last week означает прошлую неделю (с воскресенья по понедельник), last month означает предыдущий месяц (с первого числа по последнее) и т.п. The last week означает последние семь дней к настоящему моменту времени, the last month означает последние тридцать дней к настоящему моменту времени и т.п.:

I was ill last week, but I’m OK this week. (не ‘I was ill the last week…’)
I’ve had a cold for the last week. I feel terrible.

We bought this house last year.
We’ve lived here for the last year, and we’re very happy with the place.

Next week/month обозначает неделю, которая будет после той, которая сейчас. The next week/ month означает следующие семь дней/ тридцать дней с момента речи:

Goodbye — see you next week. (не ‘…see you the next week’.)
I’ll be busy for the next week. (= the seven days starting today)

Next year will be difficult. (= the year starting next January)
The next year will be difficult. (= the twelve months starting now)

2. Last и next ставятся

перед

числительными:

I’ve been busy for the last three months. (не ‘…for the three last months’.)
I’ll be at college for the next three years. (не ‘…the three next years’.)

□ Обычно говорят the last few days/weeks… и the next few days…, а не the last days/weeks… или the next days:

The last few days have been busy. (не ‘The last days…’)
The next few days will be wet.

□ При употреблении next с названиями дней или месяцев, возможна двусмысленность:

See you next Sunday. — Do you mean this coming Sunday or the one after?

Чтобы этого избежать, можно сказать:
(1) on Sunday, this Sunday, the/this Sunday coming, the/this coming Sunday или (on) Sunday this week
(2) on Sunday week, a week on Sunday или (on) Sunday next week.

3. The last и the next могут употребляться как местоимения:

That’s the last we’ll hear of it.
There’s a narrow space between our building and the next.

4. The last может означать ‘the last in a series’:

In the last week of the holiday something funny happened.
This is going to be the last Christmas I’ll spend at home.

5. Можно употреблять latest, говоря о чем-то новом, и last – со значением ‘the one before’:

Her latest book’s being published next week. (не ‘Her last book…’)
She thinks it’s much better than her last one.

He’s enjoying his latest job. (не ‘He’s enjoying his last job’)
But it doesn’t pay as much as his last one.

NEXT

1.109

1. The next можно употреблять по отношению к месту, говоря о движении или указании направления, со значением ‘after this/that one’:

We get off at the next station. (= the station that we will come to next.)
It’s not on this shelf; it’s on the next shelf up.

Next также может относится к ближайшей позиции в ряду чего-либо:

My girlfriend lives next door. Who works in the next office?
The people at the next table were having a terrible argument.

2. Next to – предлог со значением ‘beside’.
Come and sit next to me.

You have a couple of regex-based solutions that show you the right way to do this. I thought it would be interesting to see if we could build on your solution.

So you build an array of the words in your string. That works fine.

#!/usr/bin/perl

use strict;
use warnings;
use feature 'say';

use Data::Dumper;

$_ = 'I am a blue ball(apple)';

my @split_array = split /s+/, $_;

say Dumper @split_array;

That gives:

$VAR1 = [
          'I',
          'am',
          'a',
          'blue',
          'ball(apple)'
        ];

You then use $split_array[1] to get a word. But it’s not the right word, of course. $split_array[1] is the second element in the array — which is «am».

What you want to do is to walk the array, looking for «blue» and then get the next string. Something like this:

foreach (0 .. $#split_array - 1) {
  if ($split_array[$_] eq 'blue') {
    say "The next word is $split_array[$_ + 1]";
  }
}

$#split_array gives us the index of the last element in @split_array (which is 4). We subtract 1 from that as we want the word after «blue» and there can’t be a word after the last word.

That prints:

The next word is ball(apple)

Which isn’t what you want. So what went wrong? Well, it’s your original call to split. You’re splitting on whitespace and there’s no whitespace between «ball» and «apple». So let’s split on W+ (non-word characters) instead.

Then we get an extra item in our array:

$VAR1 = [
          'I',
          'am',
          'a',
          'blue',
          'ball',
          'apple'
        ];

And the correct answer.

The next word is ball
