Word for one after the next

The way Reverse Dictionary works is pretty simple. It simply looks through tonnes of dictionary definitions and grabs the ones that most closely match your search query. For example, if you type something like «longing for a time in the past», then the engine will return «nostalgia». The engine has indexed several million definitions so far, and at this stage it’s starting to give consistently good results (though it may return weird results sometimes). It acts a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search with a definition, rather than a single word. So in a sense, this tool is a «search engine for words», or a sentence to word converter.

I made this tool after working on Related Words which is a very similar tool, except it uses a bunch of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words to a search query. That project is closer to a thesaurus in the sense that it returns synonyms for a word (or short phrase) query, but it also returns many broadly related words that aren’t included in thesauri. So this project, Reverse Dictionary, is meant to go hand-in-hand with Related Words to act as a word-finding and brainstorming toolset. For those interested, I also developed Describing Words which helps you find adjectives and interesting descriptors for things (e.g. waves, sunsets, trees, etc.).

In case you didn’t notice, you can click on words in the search results and you’ll be presented with the definition of that word (if available). The definitions are sourced from the famous and open-source WordNet database, so a huge thanks to the many contributors for creating such an awesome free resource.

Last входит в смысловой ряд ‘the first, the second… the last’, а next образует «пару» с прилагательным previous. Оба слова также часто относят к определителям и тогда их можно рассматривать как «смысловую пару».

2. Last и next ставятся

перед

числительными:

I’ve been busy for the last three months. (не ‘…for the three last months’.)
I’ll be at college for the next three years. (не ‘…the three next years’.)

□ Обычно говорят the last few days/weeks… и the next few days…, а не the last days/weeks… или the next days:

The last few days have been busy. (не ‘The last days…’)
The next few days will be wet.

□ При употреблении next с названиями дней или месяцев, возможна двусмысленность:

See you next Sunday. — Do you mean this coming Sunday or the one after?

(1) on Sunday, this Sunday, the/this Sunday coming, the/this coming Sunday или (on) Sunday this week

3. The last и the next могут употребляться как местоимения:

That’s the last we’ll hear of it.
There’s a narrow space between our building and the next.

4. The last может означать ‘the last in a series’:

In the last week of the holiday something funny happened.
This is going to be the last Christmas I’ll spend at home.

5. Можно употреблять latest, говоря о чем-то новом, и last – со значением ‘the one before’:

Her latest book’s being published next week. (не ‘Her last book…’)
She thinks it’s much better than her last one.

He’s enjoying his latest job. (не ‘He’s enjoying his last job’)
But it doesn’t pay as much as his last one.

1. The next можно употреблять по отношению к месту, говоря о движении или указании направления, со значением ‘after this/that one’:

We get off at the next station. (= the station that we will come to next.)
It’s not on this shelf; it’s on the next shelf up.

Next также может относится к ближайшей позиции в ряду чего-либо:

My girlfriend lives next door. Who works in the next office?
The people at the next table were having a terrible argument.

You have a couple of regex-based solutions that show you the right way to do this. I thought it would be interesting to see if we could build on your solution.

So you build an array of the words in your string. That works fine.

That gives:

You then use $split_array[1] to get a word. But it’s not the right word, of course. $split_array[1] is the second element in the array — which is «am».

What you want to do is to walk the array, looking for «blue» and then get the next string. Something like this:

$#split_array gives us the index of the last element in @split_array (which is 4). We subtract 1 from that as we want the word after «blue» and there can’t be a word after the last word.

That prints:

The next word is ball(apple)

Which isn’t what you want. So what went wrong? Well, it’s your original call to split. You’re splitting on whitespace and there’s no whitespace between «ball» and «apple». So let’s split on W+ (non-word characters) instead.

Then we get an extra item in our array:
