Word for not taking care of

A pessimist is someone who always considers negative outcomes of a situation, whereas an optimist always considers the positive outcomes. Is there a word for someone who, in any given situation, doesn’t care about the outcome at all?

This might not be quite what you are looking for, but as an extreme case:

Nihilist.

This stems from following nihilism (adapted from the OED):

  1. Total rejection of prevailing religious beliefs, moral principles, laws, etc., often from a sense of despair and the belief that life is devoid of meaning.

  2. The belief or theory that the world has no real existence; the rejection of all notions of reality.

A nihilist would not care about an outcome because it is entirely meaningless.

The word has some negative connotations from meaning 1 above, which may make it unsuitable for your particular purpose.

Insouciant

free from concern, worry or anxiety

Unconcerned, undisturbed; carefree and nonchalant

Origin:
1820–30; < French, equivalent to in- in-3 + souciant present participle of soucier to worry < Vulgar Latin *sollicītāre, for Latin sollicitāre to disturb; see solicitous

as suggested in the definitions the other words I would prefer to use are:

nonchalant

unconcerned

All of these words imply a carefree attitude in a good way and lack the negative connotations of having no feeling at all.

A fatalist. This does not just mean a person who thinks all things are fated; it has a derived meaning: a person with an attitude of indifference to outcome because of such a belief. An optimist hopes for the best; a pessimist fears the worst; a fatalist is resigned to what will be (regardless of hopes and fears). http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fatalism

In modern Internet parlance, such a person might be referred to as a «honey badger»:

he honestly doesn't care.

This use of the term is based on this popular youtube video.

(Hat tip to user @balpha for bringing this oversight to my attention.)

More seriously, there are also mugwumps, sloths, and bumps-on-a-log, all of which have some of the qualities you describe.

Insouciant is a word in both the French and English language for a person who does not care about anything. In French it can be both an adjective & a noun. I don’t see why one could not use it as a noun in English too. Such a person would be an insouciant. Such an noun is needed.

Добавляешь к глаголу предлог — и смысл предложения меняется кардинально. Так уж это работает в английском. Разбираемся, как предлоги of, about и for влияют на глагол care.

«My friend takes care of my cat when I’m away». «Друг заботится о моей кошке, когда я в отъезде». Делать что-то для тех, кто нуждается в помощи и поддержке, — это take care of.

«Can you take care of this problem?» «Позаботитесь об этой проблеме?» Так можно спросить в автосервисе, если двигатель странно шумит. Когда мы что-то делаем, чтобы решить проблему, подойдет take care of.

«I wear a mask because I care about other people». «Я ношу маску, потому что переживаю за других людей». Мне не все равно, что с ними произойдет. Care about это про внутреннее состояние.

«A lot of people don’t care about quarantine rules». «Многие не переживают о правилах карантина». Don’t care about smth  английский эквивалент фразы «все равно».

«Let me take care of you», так вы скажете другу за ужином и предложите добавки. Давай я о тебе позабочусь, наполню твою тарелку. Тут про активное действие, поэтому take care of.

«I care about you», можно сказать бабушке. Она собралась в магазин, а вы ее не пускаете: на улице пандемия. Я переживаю за тебя, бабуля, поэтому никуда не пускаю. Это про эмоции, поэтому care about.

Care for — синоним take care of: заботиться о ком-то, делать так, чтобы человеку (или животному) было хорошо. Можно сказать «My friend cares for my cat while I’m away», а вот care about здесь совсем не подойдет.

We care for people who learn English.

Глаголы Care for, Care about и Care of

Итак, первое. В чем разница между глаголами – care for, care about и care of?

Care of – это не вполне глагол. Это наречное выражение и значит оно «до востребования».

Send it to Pedro care of me, if you like.

    Care for – это «любить» или «заботиться».

    He really cared for her.

Teach your children how to care for their pets.

    Care about – «думать о, ценить, интересоваться».

I care very much about my family.

    Употребление Care

    Существительное Care

Теперь давайте перейдем к выражениям с существительным care.

    Take care of – «заботиться о».

Who will take care of the children?

Есть просто выражение take care (with) — оно значит «быть осторожным». Также это может быть форма прощания, что-то вроде «береги себя».

Take care that you don’t fall.

You need to take more care with your writing.

    Bye now! Take care!

Take care иногда заменяют на старомодное британское have a care. Это выражение, как вы догадались, тоже значит «осторожно».

    Довольно интересны три синонимичных выражения:

    as if someone cares

    what does someone care?

    someone couldn’t care less.

    Все они обозначают «какая разница?», «мне всё равно».

I couldn’t care less how you do it – just do it.

As if she cares whether he’s happy or not!

What does the bus company care if you have to wait for three hours?

Возьмите на заметку выражение don’t care for – не любить что-то.

    I don’t care for chocolate.

Есть похожее выражение don’t care to do something – не хотеть делать что-то.

The Prime Minister said he did not care to comment.

Полезным также может оказаться выражение who cares? Оно значит тоже «какая разница?»

    ‘I don’t know. Who cares?’

В целом так выглядит ходовой набор выражений с care. Конечно, на страницах нашего сайта не словарь. Но если вы заинтересованы в том, чтобы узнать всё об этом слове, зайдите на сайт любого англо-русского словаря. Там вы найдете кучу всего интересного. Hi all, in the context of parents raising and providing care for their kids, are «care for» and «take care of» interchangeable?

    e.g.
Our parents take care of us.
    Our parents care for us.

    Many thanks!

The second sentence means your parents love you, are attached to you and mean the best for you. It is not about your parents looking after you.

Does that mean «take care of» and «look after» are synonymous here? :)

No, they aren’t. They are two correct sentences with two different verbs and so two different meanings.
    1) means «Our parents raise us (clothe, feed, and house us, take us to the doctors and supervise our health, etc.)»
    2) means «They love us.»

Can this second meaning «they love us» also be conveyed by saying «they care about us»?

EBhola #3: Mmm…not exactly. We say «Our neighbors take care of our children when we’re not there.», i.e. temporarily.

EDIT: boozer’s #6 saying that «care about» can mean «love»: :tick: (It’s not quite so strong, though (In My Opinion).)

I disagree with Boozer and Ain’ttranslatin.

Sentence 1 means just what Ain’ttranslatin says, «our parents provide for us.»
Sentence 2 has two possible meanings. Meaning A is «they love us.» Meaning B is exactly the same as sentence 1.

Usually «Our parents care for us» means both.

I agree with Sparky’s comment, as usual context dictates the meaning.

Hello! I need help with «take care «)))
I’m trying to translate one sentence from Russian, but I do not know whether it will be understood correctly or not. Here is my sentence — «What is easier for you to take care of someone or take care from someone?»

It is quite old but I will try to answer anyway. I am not sure of the part «take care from someone» but I think it could be: «What is easier for you? To take care of someone or to be taken care of?» I think «by someone» at the end is pretty redundant but maybe I am totally wrong and I hope someone will correct me if I am not right as I have become pretty curious about this myself now :D

In reply to the original post by EdisonBhola:

IMO, yes, the two sentences are interchangeable.

«Care for someone or something» has several meanings:
    1) Look after someone or something.
    2) Feel affection for someone.
    3) Want something —> somewhat formal (e.g.: would you care for some orange juice?)
    4) Like or enjoy something —> somewhat formal and often used in negative statements (e.g.: I don’t care for red wine.)

«Take care of someone» has precisely the same meaning as 1) above.
