Word for not shiny

1. A missing carton full of delicate garments had traveled a long long way before it finally found its way to me. When I looked at it, it’s dirty, dented. Can I say:

It’s worn out. — Possible I suppose, but not very natural to me in this context.

The corners of the boxes are torn up.

The tape is broken, someone must have opened the box. — The words are OK but the punctuation is iffy. See

2. If a container is 3 times a shipment size, as such, there’d be an extra space/room left in the container. Can I say:

We need to fill the extra space, otherwise it will be wobbling rattling around. The shipment inside the container could be damaged or runied or broken. [these extra words don’t add anything]

What other words for this extra space? — You could say «fill the unused space». A more technical word is «void».

What other words for «fill»? — you could say «pack the empty space»

3. If the shipment is of fine china, the best way to cushion it is by wrapping it in bubble wrap.

4. Is «sick leave note» same as «Doctor excuse» as «Doctor note»? — The usual expression is «sick note» or «doctor’s note»

5. People say: This is my neighbor living who lives down the street? Is «up the street» correct? Does the street numbers mean anything here? — Not usually. «up» and «down» in this sense are arbitrary or set by local convention (unless there’s an obvious hill, I suppose). They can vary from speaker to speaker. You might see various theories about why you would choose one or the other, but in my experience these are not adhered to by sufficiently many people to make it worth bothering to try to understand them. I’m talking about usage in the UK here.

6. I’m showing a passer-by the directions. The place is just two blocks from where we are. Do you say: Two blocks down the street ( while your finger is actully pointing the direction to show him /her) — Fine.

7. After a baby has just taken its bottle, you’re helping her to get the gas out of her by patting her back lightly so she’d burp. How do you say it in anther way? — You can just say «burping the baby».

8. a chair, a stool, Do you describe it «high chair, low stool»? — «High chair» has a special meaning (beyond just «high» and «chair») — it means a chair for a small child used at mealtimes. «Low stool» is fine if the stool is, erm, low.

If it spins, what’s the name you’d call? — «revolving chair/stool»

9. A panel of glass for table top, the edge should be «rounded off» so it won’t pose danger to anyone near the table. Also «edge» or «edges»? — «rounded off» is fine. If there’s more than one distinct edge (say a square table, with four edges) then use «edges». If there’s only one (say a circular table) then use «edge».

10. A glass display showcase cabinet. Do you refer the top part of the cabinet «the head» or «the top» — «the top»

And the foot? — «the bottom» («foot» is also possible but less common)

11. I’m putting together a book shelf. Do you refer the parts «wood panels» or «shelves»? — The «shelves» are the flat horizontal parts that support the books. A «wood panel» is any other flat wooden piece.

And do you call «side panels» — «side panels» is fine.

If there’s one panel missing from the package, which goes to the very bottom that supports the shelf, would you say: the bottom panel is missing from the order? — Yes, that’s OK.

12. A plywood board which was required putting paint on, but the edges are not shiny so that means they are finished with finishes. How would you describe this? — The usual word for «not shiny» is «matt» (or «matte»), so you could say they have a «matt finish».

How to use «Not shiny» in context?

I know that when I look in the mirror, I see someone who is beautiful. I see someone with glossy, wet hair that is perfectly styled and eye shadow that compliment my skin color perfectly. However, when I look at myself in a different light, I see someone who is not shiny. Someone who has dry hair that is frizzy and eyes that look tired. When I am not present in the mirror, I can see the flaws and marks that make me not shiny. I have acne that is never going to disappear and creases that are permanent. I know that I am not the only person who looks not shiny in the mirror.
