.
C: Program Files (x86) Microsoft Office root Office15 WINWORD.EXE
C: Program Files (x86) Microsoft Office root Office16 WINWORD.EXE
winword.exe / mfile1
winword.exe / mfile1
/ mfile
/ mfile2
/ mfile1
.

If you’re working on a long document in Word, you’ll probably be opening it often until it’s completed. Rather than opening Word to the Start screen, and then opening the file, you can automatically open it to the last document you were working on.
There are two methods for doing this, and we’ll show you both.
Option One: Create a Special Shortcut
Your first option is to create a separate shortcut with a special switch that will open the last document that was open in Word. Whenever you use that shortcut, it’ll open Word to the most recent document.
To start, we’ll need to create a shortcut to Word. Navigate to one of the following directories, depending on which version of Office you are using.
Word 2013:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice15WINWORD.EXE
Word 2016:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice16WINWORD.EXE
NOTE: Use Program Files (x86)
in the path if you’re using a 32-bit version of Word on a 64-bit operating system. Otherwise, use Program Files
instead.
Right-click on the WINWORD.EXE file and go to Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
Right-click on the new shortcut and select Properties.
In the Target edit box, put the cursor after the path currently there (preserving the quotes), and enter a space and then the following:
/mfile1
Click “OK” to save the change.
Change the title of the shortcut to indicate it will open the last opened document.
From now on, you can double-click this shortcut to open the most recent document, whatever it may be.
Option Two: Use the Run Dialog Box or the Search/Cortana Box
Maybe you don’t want to add yet another shortcut to your desktop. In that case, you can open the most recent document in Word using either the Search/Cortana box or the Run dialog box. To use the Search/Cortana box, click the Cortana search icon on the Taskbar (or the Search icon, if you’ve disabled Cortana) and enter the following into the box:
winword.exe /mfile1
To use the Run dialog box to open the most recent document in Word, press the Windows key+R and enter the same command ( winword.exe /mfile1
) in the Open box. Then, click “OK”.
To automatically open other documents in the MRU (Most Recently Used) list, use a different number after /mfile
in the Target edit box or in the command entered on the Search/Cortana box or the Run dialog box. For example, to open the next-to-last file you used, add /mfile2
instead of /mfile1
.

How-To Geek is where you turn when you want experts to explain technology. Since we launched in 2006, our articles have been read billions of times. Want to know more?
Many people look for a facility in Microsoft Word that could open the last used document automatically. That is to say, when you open MS-Word, the most recently used document should also open on its own. This helps those folks who open and close a document quite often.
Most people just open a particular file from Windows Explorer –but the above mentioned demand is a sensible one. So, here I am to tell you how such an objective could be fulfilled. There are two ways to do this. Lets have a look:
Use Run Command to Automatically Open Last Used Document
Click on the Start button and then type the following command in the “Search Programs and files” box:
winword.exe /mFile1
Click on Start button and type the command
Press enter and MS-Word will open with the most recently opened document. This command has two parts. The first part (winword.exe) launches MS Word and the second part ( /mFile1 ) opens the last opened document.
NOTE: In Windows XP use, Start > Run and then type the above command.
Create a Shortcut to Open the Most Recent Document
The command explained in previous section works fine but it would be much easier to use if you create a shortcut for it. Go to Desktop and take right click on any empty area. Select New > Shortcut option.
A box will pop-up and it will ask you to browse or type the location of the file to be opened. In this case we want to open winword.exe (this is the file that launches MS-Word). Click on Browse button and go to the location where this file is located. Once you find it, select this file and click OK button. Usually this file is located in C:Program FilesMicrosoft Office folder.

You may need to look for this file a bit as its exact location may vary in different machines. In my computer its location is:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12winword.exe
Once you have found and selected the file –the entire path will become visible in the shortcut box. The path will be closed in double quotation marks:
Location of the selected file in double quotes.
Now, after the path of winword.exe, outside the quote mark, give a space and then type /mFile1
So the entire command will look like
“C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12winword.exe” /mFile1
Click Next button, give this new shortcut a name and you’re done. A new shortcut will be created on your computer’s desktop. Double click it to open MS-Word and the most recent document in one go.
