Below is a massive list of master skill words — that is, words related to master skill. The top 4 are: masterly, mastership, masterful and maestro. You can get the definition(s) of a word in the list below by tapping the question-mark icon next to it. The words at the top of the list are the ones most associated with master skill, and as you go down the relatedness becomes more slight. By default, the words are sorted by relevance/relatedness, but you can also get the most common master skill terms by using the menu below, and there’s also the option to sort the words alphabetically so you can get master skill words starting with a particular letter. You can also filter the word list so it only shows words that are also related to another word of your choosing. So for example, you could enter «masterly» and click «filter», and it’d give you words that are related to master skill and masterly.
You can highlight the terms by the frequency with which they occur in the written English language using the menu below. The frequency data is extracted from the English Wikipedia corpus, and updated regularly. If you just care about the words’ direct semantic similarity to master skill, then there’s probably no need for this.
There are already a bunch of websites on the net that help you find synonyms for various words, but only a handful that help you find related, or even loosely associated words. So although you might see some synonyms of master skill in the list below, many of the words below will have other relationships with master skill — you could see a word with the exact opposite meaning in the word list, for example. So it’s the sort of list that would be useful for helping you build a master skill vocabulary list, or just a general master skill word list for whatever purpose, but it’s not necessarily going to be useful if you’re looking for words that mean the same thing as master skill (though it still might be handy for that).
If you’re looking for names related to master skill (e.g. business names, or pet names), this page might help you come up with ideas. The results below obviously aren’t all going to be applicable for the actual name of your pet/blog/startup/etc., but hopefully they get your mind working and help you see the links between various concepts. If your pet/blog/etc. has something to do with master skill, then it’s obviously a good idea to use concepts or words to do with master skill.
If you don’t find what you’re looking for in the list below, or if there’s some sort of bug and it’s not displaying master skill related words, please send me feedback using this page. Thanks for using the site — I hope it is useful to you! 🐷
That’s about all the master skill related words we’ve got! I hope this list of master skill terms was useful to you in some way or another. The words down here at the bottom of the list will be in some way associated with master skill, but perhaps tenuously (if you’ve currenly got it sorted by relevance, that is). If you have any feedback for the site, please share it here, but please note this is only a hobby project, so I may not be able to make regular updates to the site. Have a nice day! 🐈

Nowadays, merely having a qualification isn’t enough in the job market. To land that dream job, it’s vital that you have specific skills, especially soft skills, for example, being able to communicate well or to work in a team.
Generally speaking, you don’t acquire these skills at university, but you do acquire them in daily working life. But how? Let’s take a look at some useful methods, tips, and examples.
What are skills?
Before we dive into the ‘how to’ of acquiring and mastering new skills, it’s worth taking a moment to define exactly what a skill is.
Skill – an ability to perform a specific task or activity to a high level of proficiency
It’s possible to acquire and hone skills to perfection (or near‑perfection) through practice and dedication. Learning and mastering a skill involves far more than just a theoretical understanding of facts or concepts.
Although the terms ‘skill’ and ‘competence’ are often used interchangeably, there is actually a difference. The main difference is that a competence is far broader than a skill. A competence consists of knowledge and skills in combination with associated behavior patterns. In effect, a skill is the practical part of a broader competence.
Tip: You can learn more about the differences between skills and competences in our article Skills & competences – but what’s the difference?
Why we should constantly be mastering new skills
Continuous learning, growth, and development are not only innate to us as human beings but practically speaking also constitute an intelligent and sensible life plan. In short, there are countless reasons why it’s worth your while to constantly acquire, master, and hone your skills.
We’ve listed some of the main reasons below:
- Disciplines, professions, and technologies are changing at breakneck speed in our modern-day information society. Snooze, you lose! Continuous learning increases the number of opportunities available to you on the job market and ensures your qualifications and skills remain aligned with constantly changing needs and requirements.
- You can compare your brain to your body’s muscles – training it keeps your brain in tiptop shape and allows you to acquire and master new skills more quickly and effectively. Acquiring new skills and knowledge on an ongoing basis also boosts your brainpower.
- Mastering a broad spectrum of skills also makes you more flexible. Benefits include being able to shift focus more quickly and to take advantage of unanticipated situations – a quality that is particularly useful in our technologically complex society.
- Honing skills also increases your chances of success. The famous physicist Albert Einstein (1879–1955) didn’t consider himself a born genius. He maintained that his discoveries and scientific breakthroughs were principally the result of inquisitiveness, “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”
5 methods & benefits
Acquiring and mastering skills is, therefore, important from both a personal and professional perspective. But how can you best acquire and master new skills? And what methods are available to help you in practice?
1. On‑the‑job training
On‑the‑job training is a great way to acquire and master new skills without even having to leave the workplace. If you have co-workers with particularly appealing skill sets, ask them how they acquired those skills. Use their tips as a springboard. Alternatively, you could tackle things a little more formally by asking your employer or line manager, whether it would be possible to hire in an expert in a specific field.
2. Training courses & workshops
You could also pick up new skills by taking a traditional training course or workshop. Many universities and high schools offer courses or seminars for people outside their institutions. Workshops are an ideal setting in which to acquire a particular skill, for example, a specific IT skill such as website design, coding, or programming.
And don’t forget to ask your employer whether a training budget is available to cover all or some of the costs. Senior and middle management generally appreciate it when employees proactively seek to expand their skill sets. They’re often willing to invest in training courses and education programs for their staff.
3. E-learning
Perhaps your schedule doesn’t allow you to attend traditional training courses or education programs, or there are none available in your area. If so, e-learning is an excellent alternative. All you need is a computer and an internet connection.
E-learning entails that you’re not restricted to a given time or place. You can learn and study when and where it suits you. What’s more, the number of interactive courses and digital teaching materials available has grown rapidly in recent years.
4. Webinars & YouTube
Webinars, podcasts, and YouTube videos are inspirational, easily accessible tools that can help you acquire and master new skills. They’re clear and concise and split into manageable chunks. Webinars are often live or on-demand, whereas podcasts and instructional videos are available at any time.
5. Blogs & books
It’s even possible to do your own research. The internet is full of interesting blogs with countless tips for acquiring and mastering a wide range of skills. Or why not go old school? Visit a library or a reputable bookstore! Books remain a valuable source of information, principally because their content is presented in a clear, concise, structured fashion.
10 tips for acquiring & mastering new skills
It’s worth bearing in mind some of the following tips when looking to acquire and master new skills:
1. Create a schedule with fixed study times
Creating structure for your study plan makes it much quicker and easier to acquire and master new skills.
Choose a time that fits in with your natural daily routine. For example, morning people get the most out of study by starting early. Others only pick up steam later in the day, in which case it’s best to plan study time in the afternoon.
2. Get feedback
To put new skills into practice as effectively as possible, it’s essential to get regular feedback. Good feedback allows you to reflect more deeply, which is vital to the learning process.
Take the time every day to reflect on the progress you’re making. What went well? What do you want to improve on next time? Self-reflection strengthens your personal growth and allows you to monitor your progress.
3. Start with core skills
If you have little prior knowledge about a new skill you’re about to learn, it can all seem a bit daunting.
Most skills consist of core skills (core competences) and secondary skills. But what’s the difference? The core skills are essential to learning a new skill, whereas secondary skills are useful, but not essential to mastering this skill.
For example, to become a writer, mastery of a language is a core skill, whereas marketing is a secondary skill. We recommend starting with the core skills.
4. Take things step by step
Acquiring and mastering a new skill is often a long and complex process. That’s why it’s worth your while splitting it into a series of smaller steps. Setting milestones like this also helps you monitor the progress you’re making.
5. Learn from other people’s experience
The key to humankind’s success has been its ability to build and improve on other people’s inventions and experiences. This applies equally to acquiring and mastering new skills. Who do you know with the relevant experience and the skills you’re looking to acquire? Do they have any tips for you? And what pitfalls should you be on the lookout for?
6. Learn from experts
Study the experts in your relevant field. Who are the authorities? Why are they so good and what makes them authorities in their subject area? Capitalize on this and use their tricks, tips, experience, and knowledge to expand your skill set.
7. Find a mentor
Perhaps there’s a senior employee in your organization who could mentor you towards mastery of a specific skill. Ask them whether they’d be prepared to fulfill this role. Most people are more than willing to help and will gladly share their knowledge with others.
8. Set realistic goals
Set tangible and realistic goals for yourself. Don’t make them too big or insurmountable. This often has a demotivating effect or stops you in your tracks before you even start! Acquiring and mastering new skills involves setting realistic, positive, and challenging goals that inspire you each and every day.
9. Take action
A skill is more than just theoretical knowledge. Although theory may form the basis, acquiring and mastering new skills ultimately involves putting theory into practice. Learning by doing is vital to mastering or honing your skills.
10. Know thyself
Last, but by no means least, a modicum of self-insight can help enormously. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What qualities, talents, and character traits do you have to help you learn a specific skill? Asking yourself these questions generates the insight required to learn more effectively.
Clarity
As you’ve read, there are many ways and best practices for acquiring and mastering a new skill or honing existing skills. It’s important to know which skills and competences exist within your organization. Armed with this information, it’s much easier to put together the best possible project teams or to find the best replacements when one of your key staff members is off sick.
Skills matrices are perfect tools for recording and keeping track of this information. Of course, you could use a spreadsheet such as MS Excel, but these often create numerous pitfalls in terms of complexity, version management conflicts, and errors.
AG5’s software solves many of the problems associated with spreadsheets. It provides immediate clarity about your staff’s current skills, competences, and qualifications. It allows you to:
- enter proficiency updates and training results directly from the work floor
- put together project teams explicitly based on the expertise and experience required for the task at hand
- set up notifications for individual staff members, groups, or any certification about to lapse or expire
- identify the most qualified replacements for staff members off sick or away on vacation
- assign the most qualified personnel to skilled tasks such as retooling a production line
- replicate organizational structures and the relationships between staff members and qualifications
If you’re looking to manage your organization’s skill sets more effectively, please get in touch with us or schedule a personal demo and dive into the world of AG5!

Learning, let alone mastering a skill, can be a challenging feat. But it is definitely possible.
If you’re interesting in learning a new skill, you’re already ahead of the game in terms of learning and leading a richer, happier and more fulfilling life.
This article shares some tips and ways that will help you get better at and master a skill.
Use multiple sources and styles
A great rule of thumb is to learn from one teacher, source, method, book, course, etc. and implement it. Then take note and try a different teacher, etc.
Oftentimes we can be struggling to learn something and then we learn it a different way, from a different teacher, or see a different perspective. And all of a sudden, we’ve got it! Everything makes sense!
Or we catch something that makes it much more understandable. Or we connect the dots to other things we’ve learned.
Experiment
Experiments is how science develops and it’s how we learn. It’s how we can apply and test material. It’s how we can try new things or modify existing things for better results.
Experiments can test your abilities and push the limits for what’s possible.
Experimenting is a fun word where there is no “failure.” It was just a test or an experiment to see what would happen. We record the results, learn from them and then try new and different experiments.
Learning how to learn
Learning how to learn can help maximize your learning so that you can master a skill quicker, better and more efficiently.
It’s a skill that will help you in all areas of life because learning is required to improve and grow in all areas of life. It will frankly change your life.
The top performers and richest, most successful people are highly adept in the skill of learning.
This article is a great place to get started with tips and techniques on how to learn better, easier, and faster.
Teach and give advice
This will not only help you learn, but will give you more confidence.
The learning pyramid is a phenomenon where we learn and retain the most from teaching what we learn compared to other types of learning.
It’s also possible to teach without another person. You can teach yourself by journaling, mind mapping or talking out loud.
Oftentimes you can learn something from teaching that you never even thought you knew or had learned. Teaching can actually bring it out of you.
For example, I have a friend who I talk to often and she comes to me with advice usually about relationships. After talking to her and giving advice, I have found many times I’ve learned and discovered something (insights and ideas) myself just from speaking it to her out loud that I would’ve never thought
An easy way to get started with teaching what you learn is to record (or take it a step further and share) a TIL (Today I Learned) lesson. You can either write it down in your notes or in your journal. It helps to start a specific notebook to record everything you learn every day.
Start a blog
One of the main reasons why I started a blog is because it would help me learn.
Just as we learned in the previous point, teaching others helps us learn.
And it has many incentives with the learning process:
- It keeps you motivated
- It helps keep you accountable
- You help others in the process
There are countless blogs that started as beginner hobbies and turned into experts through their blogs from all different fields – finance, photography, tech, fashion, cosmetics, education and more!
I’ve learned a tremendous amount from blogging and I only wish I would’ve started sooner!
Talk to experts and ask their advice
In this age of the internet and social, reaching out and getting in touch with experts is extremely accessible.
The worst that can happen is that they ignore us or reject our request for answers, information and advice. This may hurt our egos temporarily, but we’ll move on and get over it.
As far as the best that can happen, well the possibilities are endless. You could not only learn something rare and invaluable that will change your life.
You could also:
- Gain courage facing your fear of reaching out
- Develop a relationship with the expert
- Learn how to network
- Get a job working with the expert
Yes, these things do happen just from tweets, DMs and emails sent.
The reward far outweighs the risk.
Learn with others & get involved in the community
Learning with others can help us master a skill faster, easier and better.
We have others to get creativity and ideas from, and model after. Not only do the teachers teach us, but our fellow classmates or learners can teach us just as much as well.
You can also teach others this way which, as a previous point shares, helps us learn the most.
It also opens the possibility for feedback, discussion, creativity, and new ideas.
It’s the reason why there are book clubs. And it’s the reason why The Socratic Method is still heavily used for learning purposes.
Learning with others also helps keep us accountable in our skill development. We are more likely to show up and do the work under social pressure.
There is also the benefit in creating new relationships and friendships, especially with those that share our interests and goals.
We are a social species. It’s in our nature. Research shows that we learn better in social environments than in isolation.
Have a mission and concrete goals
You want to be intentional with your learning and set clear goals.
Setting SMART (Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant and Time-bound) goals will help you focus and hone in on getting exactly where you want to be with your skill and ability.
“Mastering a skill” is a very vague goal. You want to make sure you’re setting specific goals in terms of abilities, tasks and results.
Having goals keeps you motivated because the goal is:
- Specific, you know exactly what you are looking forward to celebrating
- Measurable, you can track the progress
- Achievable, you can do it!
- Relevant, it’s something that interest you or will help you
- Time bound, you are pushed to reach the deadline
You’re also more likely to be motivated when you’re backed by a strong mission or “why” that gives your skill deep meaning and purpose to your life.
Schedule time
If you want to get something done, if you want to do more of something, if you want to get better at something, it’s crucial to schedule it.
If it doesn’t get scheduled, it’s not a priority and will likely not happen. Especially not consistently.
Scheduling it forces you to make time for it. You just have to commit and follow through on your calendar.
Intensify your learning
Intensifying your learning gives you more time without sacrificing amount of learning and gives you that relaxation too.
You’re able to learn faster and more efficiently and effectively if you can intensify your focus.
With low-efficiency and low-intensity learning, you learn at a slower rate so you take more time learning and it ends up taking you longer to master a skill.
It’s kind of like exercising. You can do a ten minute high intensity workout or you can do a light jog for forty minutes. The surprising fact is that you’re probably going to get better and faster results from the intense short workout than the more relaxed, longer workout.
This is true for many things in life, which is the basis behind the 80/20 Rule, that 20% of our input leads to 80% of our results.
To do this, you can try to schedule and shorten your learning or studying session of what you would normally schedule longer sessions for which will result in higher focus and higher intensity learning.
Or you could try the Pomodoro Method, which is training, studying or learning in intervals followed by short breaks of relaxation. This is backed by science and research that shows that humans can only intensely focus for no more than 45 minutes.
Do the homework
When going through courses, taking classes, or reading a book, we are often given homework to do.
Sometimes the homework may seem redundant. (“Why do I have to fill out this worksheet on something I just read or watched?”)
However just from watching, reading or listening to the material, our brain can sometimes trick us into thinking we actually know the material when in reality, we don’t. Doing the homework can test our knowledge which, in turn, helps us learn.
It also makes us proactive in our learning. It allows us to practice outside of the safe learning environment such as our dance teacher next to us to guide our movement or the security of the text in front of us or the audio in our ears.
Take responsibility for your learning
Don’t expect just watching the course, going to class or reading the book will do the work for you.
Remember that you are responsible for your learning. Not your teacher, not the course or the class.
If the method of learning is not bringing you the results you want, find a new one. The responsibility to learn and master a skill still lies on you.
You could have the greatest teacher, course or book in the world to teach you everything. But your success in mastering the skill lies in the work you do.
Don’t be afraid of mistakes and failure (and don’t be set back from them!)
Mistakes and failure are a part of the learning process.
School and the education system teach and train us that mistakes and failure are bad, bad, bad! But the opposite is true.
In improv class, one of the main principles is that mistakes are a good thing. Fearing mistakes is bad because it keeps us from trying and putting ourselves out there. When anyone would make a mistake in the improv games played, we would clap and celebrate.
Being afraid of mistakes and failure will only hold you back and keep you from mastering a skill. You can’t be good, let alone great at something without being bad at it at first.
“Sucking at something is the first step to being sorta good at something.” – Ryan North
Making mistakes and failing takes courage.

What is the key to mastering a skill? Should you focus on one technique or diversify your practice?
According to Joshua Waitzkin, the author of The Art of Learning, real skill comes from a deep, singular focus. In terms of skill-building, he argues that you reach excellence by refining a set of fundamental skills, rather than practicing a wide range of techniques. For example, focus on learning a single style of piano, like baroque classical, rather than trying to learn classical, jazz, and ragtime piano all at once.
Here’s how to master a skill, according to Waitzkin.
In his book The Art of Learning, American chess player Joshua Waitzkin explains how to master a skill; the key, he says, is to focus on one technique and practice it to perfection as opposed to switching between techniques. When you jump from technique to technique, you neglect to understand any of them beyond the surface level. According to Waitzkin, this leads to a wide-ranging but technically deficient skill set. Imagine learning five new piano chords daily—likely as not, you won’t grasp any of them deeply.
(Shortform note: In Range, David Epstein offers a counterargument to Waitzkin’s single-minded focus. He says cultivating a variety of skills gives you more flexibility in your career path; that it’s okay to find your path late in life; and that specialists end up siloed, or fixed in a particular way of thinking and acting. Epstein contends the modern world is an “unstable environment.” In other words, we can’t reliably predict what skills will remain useful, since things change so quickly. In contrast, chess and tai chi are stable environments—established games with unchanging rules—so focused practice works fine. But in unstable environments, learning widely can teach you transferable principles of learning that help you adapt to our complex world.)
Practice One Step at a Time
Waitzkin describes how he learned these fundamental skills from tai chi by slowly practicing one small movement at a time. For example, you might train a simple step forward, going slowly until the form becomes natural, like moving your hand an inch through the air.
He doesn’t say explicitly what these “fundamentals” are, but we’ve identified three techniques he uses to learn correct form:
- Deepen your awareness. Practice becoming present and moving your awareness around your body. Focus on how your body feels, and learn to move that awareness around internally.
- Relax tensions. When you’re learning to do something new with your body and mind, Waitzkin implies that there’s usually some resistance. In physical skills, your physiology—muscles, nerves, and so on—need to adapt to the unfamiliar form. In mental skills, you need to strain toward new connections, as we explained in Chapter 2. With both of these, presence helps you ease through the physical and psychological tension that precedes learning.
- Focus intensity. Once you’ve worked through resistance, the next step is to focus your energy into the new form. For example, you need to tense your muscles to properly develop them, or concentrate your mind on an idea to understand it.
Waitzkin implies that you need to cycle tension and relaxation to deepen your embodied understanding of a technique. The deeper you take it, the better you’ll be able to wield that technique in competition—it becomes smooth and instinctive.
When you deeply study a single skill, you develop a feeling for proper form. Though he doesn’t say this explicitly, we can infer that this is not mental understanding—it’s physical understanding. Reaching that feeling equips you to take on more advanced techniques.
To get to the feeling of proper form, rest your awareness in your body and gradually move through any resistance. Then, concentrate energy into the technique you’re practicing to build energy into it. For example, you might relax your shoulders to loosen them up, then practice tensing them to perform a pull-up.
This is like stretching: Gently ease through tension, moving toward what feels right. Gradually, you’ll develop that feeling of right form.
Consider “mountain” pose, a basic yoga posture. You stand with your feet together, flat on the floor; knees flexed but not locked, abs tightened slightly to support a straight spine; your shoulders resting back. You could spend hours deepening your embodied understanding of this pose: Feeling out just the right distribution of weight in your feet, just the right tension through your legs, just the right flex in your core. Eventually, you’ll reach a reliable feeling of “yes, this is right form.”
Waitzkin argues that once you’ve reached that feeling once, you can sense whether you’ve reached it with another technique. For example, a deep understanding of one yoga pose will help you develop any other, or a martial arts stance, push-ups, and so on.
