A photogenic person may look better in photos than in the real world. Some models, for instance, are much more striking in a photograph than on the street.

However, I think that people usually expect a photogenic person to look good both in real life and in photographs. There are people who are very attractive in person, but somehow the camera never shows their special qualities.

I’ve always called that kind of person hyper-photogenic … just because I’ve never found any other word for it.

(I’ve also never found a term [adjective] for the opposite of photogenic ~ someone who looks worse in photos than in real life:()

Unphotogenic doesn’t work for you? Just googled to check whether it’s a ‘real’ world — amused by the Urban Dictionary definitions:
    1. An excuse for ugly people on why they look that way.
    2. When normal girls say they look like shit when they look normal :D

An interesting thread, really. Thanks to everyone for sharing.

There is also the phrase: «X takes a good picture», which I think may come from the north of England (where’s ewie?!).

Unfortunately, unless it is understood in context, it could be misunderstood to be referring to the photographer. Therefore I wouldn’t recommend using it, but be aware of it in case you come across it.

An unphotogenic person just doesn’t take a good photo:thumbsup: (= doesn’t photograph well). I’m thinking more of someone who’s good-looking in the flesh but always looks like poo in photos. (I agree that the difference is a bit infinitesimal, Gwan:))

In AmE too, sometimes we say «He takes a good picture» meaning that he photographs well, looks good in a photograph.

As Kevin Beach says, only context will tell you when the sentence has this meaning, and even then it may be ambiguous.

This may be the person’s misplaced perception of themselves of course. My mother (not ugly!) always said she «broke the camera».

Anyone can look good in pictures by figuring out how best to pose in front of the camera. Even if you feel like you aren’t photogenic, learning some simple tricks can make a huge difference. These techniques include positioning your body in better ways, changing the lighting or scenery that you’re in, and practicing confidence so that you can come to love any photo someone takes of you. Once you get these methods down, you’ll be ready to strike a pose at any moment!

    1. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 1

      1

Determine why you look good (or bad) in pictures. Study photos of yourself. When did you look good? When did you look bad? Can you spot the difference? Look at pictures of other people and find out why they look good. Some problems might be:

      • Lighting of your photo
      • Squinted or closed eyes
      • Wrong angle on your face
      • Not using your best smile
      • Cosmetic issues, such as blemishes and black heads, or a hairstyle or clothing choice that doesn’t suit you
    2. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 2

      2

Practice posing in front of a mirror or a camera. The best way to find out your best angle or smile is to practice. Decide what positions you look best in.

      • Decide if your right or left side looks the best. Our faces aren’t completely symmetrical, so one side generally looks better than the other.
      • Try angling your body so that you will be familiar with how to position yourself when you get in front of a camera. You need be turn about 45 degrees for the most flattering pose.
      • Your hair style usually helps determine which side looks better, especially if your hairstyle is asymmetrical.[1]

    3. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 3

      3

Wear the right clothes. Wear clothes that you know look good on you. Dress in flattering cuts for your body type. Know what colors look good with your complexion and hair. This is important for looking your best in photos. As a general rule, solids look better than patterns.[2]

      • When wearing patterns, make sure to choose them carefully. Patterns can make you look bad, depending on your body shape. Smaller patterns can look busy and messy in a photo. Instead of wearing patterns from head to foot, pick one patterned element in your wardrobe.[3]
      • If you want to look thinner, wear darker clothes. If you’re thin, try wearing a light dress or light-colored sports coat.[4]
      • Most importantly, wear clothes that you are confident in.
    4. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 4

      4

      Smile naturally.[5]
A fake smile can make you look bad in a photo. It looks forced and doesn’t meet your eyes. When you take a photo, you need to give your best, most natural smile so you look your best.

      • To give your best smile, you need to feel some kind of emotion. If you aren’t happy in the moment, think of a happy memory, your favorite meal, or something that makes you laugh.[6]
      • A real smile engages the eyes. Try squinting with your lower lids. This can help you look more natural.[7]
      • Put the tip of your tongue on the back of your top teeth. This can help you smile naturally and avoid a too-wide grin.[8]
      • Get someone standing out of the picture frame to make you laugh.
      • Practice in a mirror. Learn to feel the difference between your natural smile and your fake smile.
    5. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 5

      5

Get the right makeup. For women, makeup can help make you look great (or terrible) in photos. Learning how to highlight the right areas can help make you look good in just about any photo.

      • Use concealer instead of thick foundation. Use concealer for those trouble spots on your face, like red areas around the nose or dark circles under your eyes. Place concealer on the shadows on your face, which can be found by tilting your chin down while looking in the mirror. Then place translucent powder on your T-zone — the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin. These areas can look greasy.[9]
      • Line the eyes with eyeliner to help them not disappear in a photo.[10]
Pair that with mascara to help your eyes pop.[11]
      • Place some blush on your cheeks to make them look less flat. Try a medium pink, coral, or peach shade on your cheeks.[12]
If you don’t have blush, pinch your cheeks right before you take a photo to give them color.
    6. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 6

      6

Give your hair some life. Before posing for a picture, flip your head over. This gives some volume if your hair has gone flat. You can also try running your hands through your hair to fix your part or fluff it up.

      • Go easy on the styling products. Hair that looks wet or crunchy from too much product won’t photograph well.[13]
      • Control frizz so you don’t see flyaways in your photo. Put some pomade or dry oil on your hands to help sleek down your hair.[14]
      • Also think about posing your hair. Don’t have it on your shoulders. Instead, have it in front of you, behind you, or over one shoulder. Practice beforehand and decide which placement flatters you most.[15]

    1. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 7

      1

Tilt your head. When you look at the camera, don’t look straight at the camera. Look slightly above or slightly below. Then, tilt your head up or down slightly.[16]

      • To get a stronger jawline and reduce the likelihood of a double chin, elongate your neck and tilt your chin down. It might feel funny, but it’ll help you look great.[17]
    2. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 8

      2

Find the light. Lighting is important when taking good pictures. If there’s no flash, find a light source that shines on your face, not on the side of your face.

      • Lamps, streetlights, windows, and doorways can give good light sources when there’s no flash.[18]
They also can produce nice soft light for more flattering photos.
      • Move around rooms to find the lighting. Try putting the lighting behind you, above you, and in front of you to find the best placement.
      • One hour after sunset and one hour before sunset provides nice lighting for photos.[19]
      • Avoid lighting which places harsh shadows on your face. This can accentuate imperfections and give you unflattering dark areas. Bright lighting can also emphasize wrinkles and other trouble spots. The sun or bright, harsh overhead lights can cause this unflattering light.[20]
Look for lighting that creates an even glow from the forehead to the cheeks to the chin.[21]
Try taking photos on a cloudy day or using a lamp or softer light.
    3. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 9

      3

Angle your body to the camera. Turn your body 45 degrees away from the camera instead of taking a photo full on.[22]
This pose gives a slimming effect and creates angles that look better in a photo.

      • Pose like you’re on the red carpet. Put your hand on your hip, angle your body away from the camera, and turn your face towards it.[23]
      • Turn your torso so one shoulder is closer to the camera than the other. This helps make you look slender.[24]
      • Whatever you put towards the camera looks the biggest. If you don’t want to emphasize parts of your body, make sure they are not the closest to the camera.
      • Pull your shoulders back and straighten your back. Good posture can make a world of difference when you are taking a photo.[25]
    4. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 10

      4

Position your body correctly. Instead of having straight, limp arms and stiff legs, try bending them to give them life. Bend your arms and hold them slightly away from your body. This also helps create shape to your midsection instead of bulk.[26]
Keep your hands relaxed and slightly bent.

      • Bend your front leg and place your weight in the back leg.[27]
Or try crossing your legs at the ankles.
      • Pull your arm away from your body and bend it slightly to make it appear slimmer.
    5. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 11

      5

Take a lot of photos. One of the best ways to get the best picture is to take more than one! Even models go through numerous frames to get that one perfect picture. The more pictures you take, the better likelihood you will get a great photo.[28]

    6. Image titled Look Good in Pictures Step 12

      6

Feel confident. Make sure you feel proud of who you are. You are unique and have great features. Focus on that instead of any faults you think you have. Being happy and giving a genuine smile in the photo can make a world of difference.

      • Don’t try to bend your body into uncomfortable or awkward poses. Pose to flatter your body, but make sure to stay natural. Being stiff will just make you look awkward, which will result in a bad photo.

15 Ways to Look Better In Photos

We’ve all had that moment where we don’t feel photogenic and can’t take a good photo to save our lives. In the age of social media, knowing how to take a good photo is essential. We all strive to achieve that picture of perfection, but where do you even begin to look better in photos?

Being photogenic is more than just having a good face. If you know the tricks of the trade, you can pull off a great photo that friends will be envious of. Want to know how to always look better in photos? Look no further.

We’ve put together 15 tips that will help you look great in your next profile pic and up your Instagram game.

    15.) Don’t Cross Your Arms

man wearing a bow tie with his arms crossed

Crossing your arms looks unnatural and awkward. The position of the arms and shoulders when they are crossed give no real definition to your figure.

Instead, place your arms down by your sides, slightly apart. This pose will give the impression of a more slender neck, and your body outline will be more defined.

14.) Put Your Tongue Behind Your Teeth

put your tongue behind your teeth to look better in photos

Sometimes it’s easy to go overboard with a huge, over-the-top grin, which can sometimes look a bit too forced and unnatural.

To avoid this, place your tongue behind your teeth when you smile to rein in those pearly whites.

13.) Say Thursday Instead of Cheese

    put on your best smile

We’ve all been told somewhere down the line to say “cheese” when getting our photos taken. However, this word will create a fake-looking smile.

If you want to look better in photos, say the word “Thursday”. It will make your face look more relaxed and natural instead of giving you a cheesy grin.

12.) Take Seated Photos From a Higher Angle

woman sitting on a rooftop with skyline in the background

Angle is everything when it comes to taking a good photo. If you are seated, it may feel easier and more convenient to take the photo straight on at the same level.

However, if you take the photo from above, your face and jawline will become more defined.

11.) Tilt Your Head Toward the Camera

woman in a hat tilting her head towards the camera

You should always have your neck visible in photos. Don’t tilt your head forward. This will make your stare appear to be heavy and slightly intimidating.

By tilting your head toward the camera and putting your chin up, you’ll create a more welcoming photo. It may feel like an unnatural pose, but it will give the appearance of a slimmer neck.

10.) Imitate Touching to Look Better in Photos

woman touching face to look better in photos

Touching your face will draw attention away from the rest of your features and make your face look smaller. By imitating a touch rather than touching your face, it will look more elegant and highlight the elements of your face.

Never touch your face or head during a photoshoot. Practice the art of imitating toughing certain spots on your body without ever making any contact. This makes for a better photo.

    9.) Sit Up Straight

woman sitting on a bench with beautiful posture

Posture is essential when posing for a pic. To help you look better in photos, be aware of your position and how you sit and stand. Slouching while sitting or standing visually shortens your neck and body. It will even appear to add a few inches onto your waistline, and nobody wants that!

To combat this, straighten your spine by bending your back and drawing your shoulders closer together. To make your body outline more defined while sitting down, don’t lean back on the chair. Sit slightly forward with your body half turned toward the camera.

    8.) Don’t Show Your Elbows

    woman showing elbows

Not showing your elbows is essential when trying to look better in photos. An elbow that is pointed straight towards the camera looks shortened, and let’s admit it, it’s an unnatural pose.

If your arms are in the photo, move your elbows to the side and have your hands in plain sight.

    7.) Play With Angles

woman slightly turning away from the camera to take a better photo

The trick to looking better in photos is finding the right angle. For example, if you look straight on with your legs facing the camera, it will make your body look box-like and undefined. The wrong angle can make your arms and legs look shorter and your body look bulky.

Try turning slightly away from the camera at more of an angle. If you are sitting, place one leg slightly above the other to give the impression of elongated slimmer legs.

Not all angles work for everyone, so play around by taking some shots from different angles until you find what works best for you.

    6.) Create Visual Lines

girl posing to look better in a photo

It’s often hard to work out what to do with your arms when getting your photo taken. If you keep your hands too lose, it can look unnatural, If you cross your arms, it can look awkward.

For a more photogenic pose, create elegant visual lines by using your arms. Move your arms away from your body to create straight lines and angles that will complement your body and highlight your natural figure.

5.) Use Both Straight and Curvy Lines

use curved and create straight lines with your arms to take a better photo

The combination of both straight and curved lines used together will help you look good in photos.

By highlighting the natural curves of your body against the straight lines of your arms, you’ll create a more elegant and visually appealing photo.

    4.) Emphasize Your Face

woman with fingers under her chin

If you want to take a good photo, emphasize your face by using your hands to highlight your best feature.

Don’t clench your first and lean your head on top of it because this can look too forced. Instead, gently extend your fingers under your chin without actually touching it to draw attention toward your face.

    3.) Avoid Baggy Clothes

    woman in baggy clothes

Baggy clothes don’t flatter the body at all and make it hard to discern. Avoid baggy clothes because they will make your body seem wider than it is.

To give your body a more defined look, place your hands on your hips. Put one hand placed slightly above the other and keep both wrists are visible.

    2.) Find the Sunset

    find the sunset

Dusk is one of the best times for an outdoor picture. The lighting is flattering, and the sun casts less of a downward shadow.

The sunset usually lights up the area under your eye and it helps you look younger.

1.) Apply a Pop of Lipstick Color

    women with lipstick

If you want a photo to stand out more, try and find a lipstick color that will make your face POP.

Having a bold lipstick will bring attention to your facial features.

Practice makes perfect, so keep at trying different poses to find what works for you. Before you know it you’ll be a pro when it comes to getting your photo taken. Your travel photography will look amazing and your selfies will be on point!

Photogenic often means literally that you look good in photos. Some people say this when they see an unexpectedly good photo of someone.

    level 2

Ah that would make sense. I’ve never used it in the literal sense like that but I see what you mean.

    level 1

Nope, it’s not just another word for good looking.

Yes, it is possible to be good looking irl and look less attractive in pictures and the other way around, I guess it’s the light and shadows at play

    level 1

I know some people who always manage to look stunning in photos, even if it’s not really a reflection of how they look in real life. Not that they are ugly, but they always manage to find the perfect pose in the perfect light. By the same token, I know some people who are conventionally attractive, but always just look average in photos.
