I’m having a problem which word should I choose to describe a hot and humid day? Should I go for stuffy, steamy, sultry or there is better one?
-
#2
If only one word is demanded, ‘sultry’ is an excellent choice. There is also ‘close’, which also gives the impression of there not being enough oxygen in the air and soon there will be thunder.

Without context, it is impossible to say. Right now in Hong Kong we have «hot and humid» and my first thought is «miserable.»

Sultry sounds rather literary, at least to my ears. I can’t imagine someone saying it casually, but perhaps it works in the UK. It depends what effect you’re going for. In a casual conversation, I might say ‘muggy’, although I suspect that’s not used in American English (?)

Thanks, as for the context, I just meant a casual conversation. Something like : «What a xxx day»

Sure, we’ve got that here.

Muggy is very good (as a word … as a weather, it’s awful: hot and humid ).

Wrong again! If nothing else, these forums are constantly making me discover either that you guys do say things I thought you didn’t, or you don’t say things I thought you did

In that case, if you want to keep to a construction that describes the day rather than the specific atmospheric condition, ‘close’ would not work. It is usually used — «It’s/the weather’s really close.» On the other hand, ‘muggy’ would.
Where in the world is this conversation taking place? I ask as some adjectives would not be suitable for Northern Europe and others not suitable for a tropical climate.

«Sultry» and «muggy» are both words I’ve never heard before.
«Hot» usually works fine.

I suggest that you look up sultry at least before you use it…. It does have other, quite different, meanings..

Just to comment as well on arturolczykowski’s original suggestions, I would only use ‘stuffy’ to describe an indoor space («It’s really stuffy in here, let’s open the windows»), and I would expect ‘steamy’ to involve actual steam. You might get away with it in the jungle perhaps, but otherwise save it for describing a sauna (although there’s nothing to stop you saying «gosh, it’s like a sauna out there!»
PS ‘Steamy’, like ‘sultry’, can also have a rather different meaning, as George French points out, although the ‘sexy’ association is probably stronger (and dominant) with ‘sultry’.

Can you see if I use the adjectives «sweltering», «muggy» and «sticky» correctly:
What a sweltering day! It is sweltering.
What a muggy day! It is muggy.
What a sticky day! It is sticky.
-

What a sweltering hot day! It is sweltering hot (or it is sweltering today)
Although the WR Dictionary has sweltering day as an example, I would not use sweltering alone — maybe that’s just me.
What a muggy day! It is muggy.
What a sticky day! It is sticky.

Humid there? … no way.

Yes, agreed, a sweltering hot day doesn’t need to be humid, just horribly hot.
