There are words like ‘feline’, ‘canine’, ‘bovine’, ‘serpentine’, etc.
Are there corresponding words for ‘rabbit-like’, ‘bird-like’ and ‘horse-like’?
Thanks!

leporine (for hares, anyway) — aquiline (for eagles, anyway) — equine

    • #3

Just to say — those words don’t necessarily mean «catlike» etc — the other key meaning is «of the cat family» (etc).

I can’t think of an equivalent for rabbit; for the other two it would be avian and equine.

«avian» means of or relating to birds, but not quite «bird-like»

And are there other words like these?

Yes, there will be lots. Because of the history of the English language, we have many, many «near-synonyms»* where one word has germanic roots and another has French or Latin roots.

    ———

*I stress «near» — there are very few complete synonyms in English;)

    • #7

    Just off the top of my head — «ovine» (sheep or camel-like), «leonine»(lion-like), «vulpine» (wolf-like), «elephantine» (elephant-like)

Oh, and «asinine» (donkey- or ass-like), but «chiropterous» (of bats)

    • #10

Galline and caprine (chickens and goats).

    • #12

    «Porcine» (pig-like, pronounced «poor-sign»); «piscine»(fish-like, pron. «pissign»), and I suppose «feminine» and «masculine».
    #7 I apologize — «vulpine» is fox-like, not wolf-like, which is «lupine».

The three which were originally asked about have been covered, but a number of others have now been added to the list, taking it a bit outside the scope of our forum. I’m therefore now closing the thread: thanks to everyone for the suggestions, which I hope M——A——R——Y has found useful. DonnyB — moderator.
