Word for hair on face

If the facial hair is very soft and has a slightly matted appearance it is sometimes referred to as down. Some compare it to the skin that covers a peach. It is also used for very young children, especially newborns.

down noun
2.1. Fine, soft hair on the face or body of a person:
the little girl had a covering of golden down on her head

Oxford Dictionaries

For facial hair that is visible above the lips, there are two ways of calling it; (fine) upper-lip hair, which many would posit is an euphemism for the more masculine term, moustache. Female moustaches aren’t the same as men’s. Firstly they don’t normally grow beyond a certain length, and secondly they’re usually much softer and more delicate in appearance. enter image description here If you type upper-lip hair on Google you’ll find many instances and images

moustache noun
1. A strip of hair left to grow above the upper lip.
She has a pencil-thin moustache on her upper lip

Oxford Dictionaries

A more precise medical term for facial and body hair is

Vellus hair
Vellus hair is short, fine, light-colored, and barely noticeable hair
that develops on most of a person’s body during childhood. Exceptions
include the lips, the back of the ear, the palm of the hand, the sole
of the foot, some external genital areas, the navel and scar tissue. […]Vellus hair is most easily observed on children and adult women, as they generally have less terminal hair to obscure it.

Wikipedia

For hair that is visible around the chin area, you could call it chin hair, but I barely read this term in depilatory products. Generally the most common and most understood term is the one discovered by the OP himself, facial hair.

Who would have thought that something as simple as cutting hair could have such a large vocabulary!  Hair vocabulary isn’t something you come across every day.  So it’s not until you’re in the seat that you find you are exposed to it.  Therefore, it’s worth preparing yourself before the big event.  In this Free Online Business English course, I’ll cover the most common hair vocabulary for hair salons and barbershops to help you ask for a haircut in English.  Don’t forget, if you want to perfect your English pronunciation, you can find the full video of this lesson at the bottom of the lesson where you will hear me pronounce many of the hair salon words for you.

Hair Salon Vocabulary in English – where to go

Men and women have many options to choose from.  Many places that cut hair will call themselves a:

– Hairdressers

– Hair Salon

– Hair Studio

Definition of a hair salon and hairdressers meaning

There is no difference between the examples above however, it is more common to refer to a hair salon as a location/shop or ‘I’m going to the hairdressers’.  Typically, they focus on women’s hair, however, they will usually also cut men’s hair.

– Barber Shop (Men Only – includes facial haircare)

This is often referred to as simply – The barbers.

Who works there?

You will initially meet the receptionist and then you will meet the person who will be doing your haircut:

Hairstylist (or stylist) / hairdresser (ranked by Junior or Senior) – a person who cuts men’s or women’s hair.

Barber – a person who cuts men’s hair.

Arriving at the hairdressers

Most salons require you to have an appointment.  Once you arrive for your appointment you will book in with the receptionist.  They will normally take your coat and hang it up for you, then they put a protective cape around you and take you to your chair in front of a big mirror.  You will then be offered a drink (Tea, Coffee, or Water) and a magazine to read while you wait.

Most visits will involve washing your hair.  They will shampoo and condition your hair. At this point you may be asked if you want extra treatments applied to the hair, these will come at an extra charge.

Hair vocabulary for an English haircut

When referring to ONE SINGLE hair then we use an article.  For example:

   – There is a hair in my food.

   – I found a grey hair.

Please be aware that the word hair is usually used without article when it refers to all the hairs on one’s head in general. For example:

   – Brown hair is very common in my country.

   – I would like you to wash hair and sweep the floors today.

But if we are referring to more than one hair, a few hairs, then it takes the plural form.  For example:

   – He was excited to discover four hairs had grown on his chin.

   – You have a few stray hairs growing on your neck.

Let’s discuss the areas of the head.

Forehead – The front of your head above your eyebrows.

Scalp – The skin covering the head (excluding the face).

Crown – The very top of the head.

Nape – Back of the neck.

Hairline (receding hairline)  – Line where the hair starts on your forehead.

Fringe – Hair that covers the forehead.

Parting – The split of hair on the top of the head, some people have a centre parting and others have a side parting.

Sideburns – The area of hair in front of your ears.

Beard – Hair on the chin and lower cheeks.

Moustache –  Hair on the upper lip.

Hair salon words for equipment used

Hairstylists have lots of equipment, the common items that you should know the names for are as follows:

Hairdryer – For drying wet hair.

Scissors – For cutting hair by hand.

Clippers – Electric haircutters (used on very short hair).

Trimmers – Electric hair cutters, designed to get closer to the skin.  Used for beards, sideburns, edges, etc.

Razor – A blade used to cut the hair as close to the skin as possible.  Usually used by a barber.

Straighteners – Irons for the hair, they make hair straight using heat.

Curling tongs – Curl hair using heat.

Hairbrush – Brush used to smooth the hair.

Comb – (pronounced with a silent B) a strip of plastic, metal, or wood with a row of narrow teeth, used for untangling or arranging the hair.

Products used to keep the hair in place; Gel, Mousse, Wax, Hair spray.

How to ask for a haircut in English

Asking for something in the hairdressers is the same as asking for anything, you start your sentence with “I would like”, or “I want” and then you simply need to know what it is you want.  It helps to do some research and take in a few photos to show the stylist what you want so that they have a clear idea. In most cases, you will want one more of the following services: Wash, Cut, Colour, Styled (or restyled).  Let’s have a look at these services in more detail.

Hairstyle vocabulary – Colours

Usually referred to as having your hair dyed (as they use dye to do the colour), you will be asked whether you want permanent or semi-permanent colour

An all-over colour colours all your hair, but there are other options. You can have strips of hair coloured instead, referred to as highlights and lowlights.  Highlights involve lightening hair and lowlights involve darkening hair. In order to add highlights or lowlights, the stylist will use foils or a cap.

When taking the hair lighter all over you may hear the term bleaching the hair.

More hairdresser vocabulary – Hairstyle words

We covered some of the most common English hairstyle words above and in this section, we’ll look at a wider selection of hairstyle vocabulary.

Perm – Makes hair curly

Straighten / Relax – Makes hair straight

Wash & blow-dry

Braid – Plait the hair

Cornrows – A style of braiding and plaiting the hair in narrow strips to form geometric patterns on the scalp.

Extensions – Artificial or human hair is attached to the natural hair in strands.

Weave – Artificial hair is braided / woven into natural hair.

Quiff – Lots of volume in the front part of the hair.

Comb over – Hair is swept sideways across the head. Sometimes used by those who have problems with hair thinning on top.

Slicked back – All the hair is scraped backward from the forehead and fixed in place with holding product.

Spiky hair

Afro – Mass of tight curls that stands up / sticks out around the head. Sometimes simply called a ‘fro’.

Shiny hair

Bald – No hair on the head.

Bun – The hair is wrapped into a ball-like shape and fixed normally at the back of the head.

Topknot – Similar to a bun, a knot of hair on the top of the head.

Beehive – Backcombing or teasing with hairspray to style hair on top of the head so that the size and shape are suggestive of a beehive, hence the name.

Wavey hair

Bunches / Pigtails – Hair is tied up on each side.

Ponytail – Hair is tied up at the back.

Dreadlocks – Dreads or Locks created by matting or braiding strands of hair.

An Example Hair salon conversation

Now let’s look at an example of a hair salon conversation between a hairdresser and a customer.  Below you will also find an example of a Conversation between barber and customer.  This hair salon conversation is a typical welcome to a hair salon.  You’ll notice a few typical interactions that are specific to a hair salon experience.

Hair salon conversion

Receptionist: Hi how can I help you?

Customer: Hi, I have a booking for 3pm.

Receptionist: Great, I have you here for a wash and cut, right?

Customer: Yes, that’s right.

Receptionist: Great, come with me, please.  Here you go, can I get you a drink?

Customer: Yes please a coffee would be lovely.

Hairdresser: Hi, I’m Anna.  How are you?  What are we doing today?

Customer: Hi Anna, I’m well thanks. I just need to cut my split ends and a bit of layering, please.

Hairdresser: Fantastic, that’s simple enough.  Shall we take you over for a wash now?

Customer: Yes, please.  I love a head massage, it’s such a luxury.

Vocabulary for a Barber Shop

So far we have focused more on hairdresser vocabulary.  In this next section, we will look at the Barbershop vocabulary – some of these hairstyle words and vocabulary have been covered above, but for the sake of simplicity, we’ll cover them all here:

Barbershop vocabulary: equipment

Clippers – Electric haircutters (used for short hair in grades e.g. #1, #2, #3, etc).

Trimmers – Electric hair cutters, designed to get closer to the skin.  Used for beards, sideburns, edges, etc.

Razor – A blade used to cut the hair as close to the skin as possible.  Usually used by a barber.

Towel – A cotton fabric square/rectangle.  Often used hot to soften the hair and raise hair before shaving.

Hi! thank you very match for your lessons. I discovered this site occasionally, but it is becoming very important to my abecedarianism.
Congratulations for everyone teachers, especially for Teacher Ronnie by your excellent pronunciation.

Rosalino Rita

I am not happy with options which you have given in one of the quiz questions. The question is
The hair on a man’s chin is called…

a goatee
chin hair
a moustache
a sheep
an ugly, brown dog
hairy-chin
We Muslims consider hairs on our chin as very sacred. In options, you have given options like an ugly, brown dog and many other like this. This has hurt feelings of Muslims. I watch your lectures and learn a lot. I am not going to watch your lectures again.

Muzamil

If you are offended, then don’t watch.
“This has hurt feelings of Muslims”. No…this has hurt YOUR feelings…
The question was OBVIOUSLY not ment to offend ANYONE.

    Ronnie

well ronnie iam a mmuslim myself and i agree with u.there is nothing wrong with that question.i dont know why people get offended vry quickly…and why they try to create their own meanings, misconstrue words and exploit others’ emotion. BTW i just lov the way u teach….keep it going.

      mahnoor

I’m also Muslim I agree with Mahnoor because there was nothing like that. Ronnie you r best teacher.

        abbas2525

Thank you Mrs. Ronnie so much, you make learning interesting and fun. By the way I’m Muslim too, and I didn’t get offended at all! This is not offensive, he got it wrong I guess.

Mam how “would have been” is used in sentence?

cupid

Would have been is used to give advice for a mistake someone made in the past.
Eg… I missed my bus stop because I was talking to my friend.
If I were you, I would have been very angry.
You can use any past participle (p.p) verb….. I + would + have + p.p. Ex. I would have told the bus driver to stop and let me off.
Hope that helps you! Good luck!

    Ronnie

      mam not getting exactly ..

I found this interesting fact about “sideburns” in a Wikipedia page./ Sideburns, sideboards,or side whiskers are patches of facial hair grown on the sides of the face, extending from the hairline to below the ears and worn with an unbearded chin. The term sideburns is a 19th-century corruption of the original burnsides, named after American Civil War general Ambrose Burnside, a man known for his unusual facial hairstyle that connected thick sideburns by way of a moustache, but left the chin clean-shaven. “Burnsides” became “sideburns” probably because of their location on the side of the face.//

Harry could still see the blond-haired youth’s face; it was merry, wild; there was a Fred and George-ish air of triumphant trickery about him.

Гарри все еще видел перед собой обрамленное светлыми волосами молодое лицо, его веселое, необузданное выражение — такое появлялось на физиономиях торжествующих Фреда и Джорджа, когда им удавалось кого-нибудь облапошить.

Simple illustration of various styles of facial hair

This is a non-exhaustive list of facial hairstyles.

Moustache styles[edit]

A moustache is defined as any facial hair grown specifically on the upper lip. There are many different types of moustache, but all differentiate between hair grown exclusively on the upper lip and hair grown on other parts of the face (which would make the facial hair a beard).

Name Image Description
Fu Manchu YU-HAUNGDONG-1920.jpeg A thin, narrow, moustache that grows downward in two very long tendrils from the upper lip, with the tapered, pointed ends hanging past the jawline. It is similar to the horseshoe moustache, but differentiated by the chin and cheeks area being smooth shaven with the lip tendrils overhanging them.[1] The moustache is named after Fu Manchu, a fictional Chinese master-criminal created by Sax Rohmer in 1911, whose portrayal in print and film media established the style.
English moustache Lieut. Richard Dowse of the Queensland Volunteer Rifles (5168600872).jpg A wide moustache that gets narrow on the sides, but is mostly straight.
Handlebar moustache The Handlebar (Moustache) Club - LONDON - 07-03-2013 cropped.jpg A moustache which has its ends grown much longer and often flared out. This is usually accentuated by styling the hair with a product such as hair gel or moustache wax. Occasionally, the ends are worn in loops.
Imperial moustache Major William Oswald Hodgkinson (5168600878).jpg A moustache similar to the handlebar, but curls and is generally thicker. It was used as a category by WBMA.
Dali moustache Salvador Dali NYWTS.jpg Narrow moustache that points upwards. Named after Salvador Dalí.[2]
Chevron moustache India - Delhi train moustache - 4808.jpg A moustache that covers the area between vermilion border and nose, and extends to the edges of upper lips, but no further.
Pyramid moustache

Brad Pitt October 2014.jpg

A moustache similar to the chevron moustache but straight instead of curvy, giving a loose resemblance to a triangle.[3]
Lampshade moustache

Black moustache.jpg

A moustache similar to the Pyramid moustache but steeper, thus resembling a trapezoid.[3]
Painter’s brush

Painters-brush-moustache.png

An intermediate of chevron moustache and pyramid moustache, its top is round, but the bottom is straight.[3]
Horseshoe moustache Hulk Hogan July 2010 - cropped.jpg A full moustache with ends that extend down in parallel straight lines beyond the upper lip and down to the jawline. It is similar to the traditional goatee, except for the clean-shaven chin, and resembles a horseshoe or an inverted U.
Pencil moustache John Waters 1995.jpg A pencil moustache is a thin line of hair, usually just above the line of the upper lip. It is supposed to look narrow enough to have been drawn on with a pencil (or eyeliner). Often a man wearing a pencil moustache will shave the area above it to accentuate the remaining hair. Similar thin moustaches are sometimes favored by scuba divers because the moustache does not interfere with the diving mask sealing against the skin.
Toothbrush moustache Charlie face.JPG This is a narrow but tall moustache which generally does not extend beyond the sides of the nose, and extends to the upper lip. This type of facial hair resembles a small brush like a toothbrush, where the «bristles» are attached to the bottom of the nose, which was once thought comical.

Charlie Chaplin was the first famous man to sport this look, and his popularity circa 1915 made the toothbrush style fashionable worldwide in the early 20th century. However, Adolf Hitler’s adoption of the style from 1919 onward eventually led to a distinct association between the style and the German Nazi leader. Resultantly dubbed the «Hitler moustache» in the public consciousness, the style faded from popularity after 1939 and was nearly extinct after World War II.

Walrus moustache Harry Turley 1908 (cropped).jpg The walrus moustache is characterized by whiskers that are thick, bushy, and droop over the mouth. The style resembles the whiskers of a walrus, hence the name.
Hungarian moustache Adam Halliday, ca. 1904 (4050604821).jpg Big bushy moustache that extends to the sides. It was used as a category by WBMA.
Zapata moustache Emiliano Zapata, 1914.jpg A moustache where the two ends droop downwards towards the jawline, as worn by Mexican Revolutionary Emiliano Zapata. The style was popularized by Marlon Brando in the 1952 semi-biographical film Viva Zapata!.[4]

Beard styles[edit]

The simple term beard is an umbrella term which can include any style of facial hair that isn’t clean shaven or just a moustache.

Goatee styles[edit]

Name Image Description
Goat patch Serj Tankian 2006 (cropped).jpg Facial hair growing from the chin directly beneath the mouth. This is meant to resemble the hair on the chin of a goat. Also called a «chin puff» or «chin strip». (Also see: goatee.)
Goatee Alberto firma.png A beard style incorporating hair on the chin but not the cheeks. Traditionally, the term referred to a style including only the hair on the lower jaw around the mouth, but has become a blanket term to refer to any style incorporating hair on the chin but not the cheeks, including those with incorporated moustaches.
The Zappa[5][6] Frank Zappa 1973 2.JPG The Zappa style consists of a wide soul patch and full moustache that extends slightly downward past the corners of the mouth. Named for American musician Frank Zappa.
Balbo Italo Balbo zoom.jpg An extended version of the Van Dyke which wraps around the mouth, with the ends of the moustache (and sometimes also the jawline) flared out beyond the lines that connect to the chin. Named for Italian aviator and Marshal of the Air Force in Fascist Italy Italo Balbo. This style was common among 19th- and early 20th-century German collegiates and military officials.
Anchor beard J. D. Pardo by Gage Skidmore 2.jpg Anchor is another variant of t-beard, but unlike the Balbo beard, it’s trimmed to resemble an anchor.
Soul patch HowieMandelM07 crop.jpg A soul patch is grown just below the lower lip, but does not grow past the chin (i.e., goat patch). This facial hairstyle is often grown narrow and sometimes made into a spike. The stereotypical image of a 1960s beatnik often includes a soul patch. Howie Mandel (pictured) is a notable modern-day man known for sporting a soul patch.
Van Dyke beard Augustins - Portrait du peintre espagnol Matías Moreno - Charles Durand dit Carolus-Duran P1652 (close-up).jpg The Van Dyke style is a type of goatee in which the chin hair is disconnected from the moustache hair. Often the two patches are shaped and styled independently of each other, sometimes with the chin being made into a narrow oval shape and the moustache flared out like a Handlebar style. This style is sometimes conflated with the «French Beard», which has a fuller chin beard. It is named after the 17th-century Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck.

Partial beard styles[edit]

Name Image Description
Chin curtain Abraham Lincoln November 1863.jpg A full beard without a moustache or neck hair, sometimes called a «lion’s mane.»
Chinstrap beard Passport photo of man with chinstrap beard.jpg Sideburns which are connected to each other by a narrow line of hair along the jaw, resembling a helmet strap harnessed to one’s chin.
Designer stubble (also called five o’clock shadow) Shahi.jpg A stubble is any length of hair which is long enough to be seen, but short enough to not fully cover the skin beneath. This contributes to an image that a man is anywhere between relaxed and casual to disheveled and unclean.

The term five-o’clock shadow refers to stubble which is very short, apparently only a few hours’ growth (as it would look at 5 PM after a man shaved that morning).

Friendly Mutton Chops Ambrose Everett Burnside.jpg Muttonchops which are connected by a moustache, but no chin hair (which would make it a full beard).[7]
Hulihee The American Museum journal (c1900-(1918)) (18156941642).jpg Similar to friendly muttonchops and sidewhiskers but trimmed mustache and sideburns. It originates in Hawaii.[8]
Circle beard Kingsley Fletcher.- Imageedit 11 9816961195.jpg A goatee in which the moustache is allowed to connect to the hair on the chin.
Mutton chops Jules Emile Péan. Photograph by Reutlinger. Wellcome V0028184.jpg A more elaborate growth of sideburns which also grow larger toward the chin, resembling a mutton chop (cut of meat with a bone sticking out). An English style that became popular with some in the US by the early 1800s.[9]
Neckbeard John Adams Dix.jpg A beard which does not include any hair on the face, but includes the hair of the neck, or under the jaw, or both. Popular in the 19th century, wearers included Jefferson Davis, Joseph Dalton Hooker, Richard Wagner, Henry David Thoreau, Horace Greeley, and Alpheus Felch.
Shenandoah Amish Man in straw hat, suspenders, and shenandoah beard.jpg A fuller version of the chin curtain in which only the moustache is shaved, allowing the hair on the neck to grow out. The Shenandoah style was common in the 19th century in Europe and North America, and is often associated with the Amish community.
Sideburns Ambrose Burnside - retouched.jpg Originally known as «Burnsides», sideburns are the patch of hair in front of the ears which connects a beard to the hair of one’s head. Any extension beyond a simple corner angle on the front side of the head is considered to be a sideburn, though they can range widely in size from short and neatly cropped to the distinctly massive «muttonchops» of Ambrose Burnside (who gave the term its original name).
Sidewhiskers Chester A. Arthur by Ole Peter Hansen Balling.JPG Related to sideburns and muttonchops, but considerably more extreme. Classic sidewhiskers hang well below the jawline. They may be connected via a moustache, as in this picture of Chester A. Arthur, but this is not always the case (similar to the situation with standard and friendly mutton chops).

Full-beard styles[edit]

A full-beard which shows full, unmodified growth on all available areas of the face and neck, including the moustache, chin, sideburns, and cheeks.

Name Image Description
Verdi beard Verdi-1840.jpg A short beard where the moustache is disconnected from rest of the facial hair.[10] Named after Giuseppe Verdi.
Garibaldi beard Giuseppe Garibaldi Ney.jpg A beard that evenly extends below the chin, but no more than 20 cm.[11] Named after Giuseppe Garibaldi.
Forkbeard Portrait of James V of Scotland (1512 - 1542).jpg A pointed beard that is split by a curl at the chin. Despite also being known as the «French fork», it originates from Iran.[12]
Ducktail Mel Gibson Cannes 2016 3.jpg A beard where the middle part hangs from chin leaving it pointed. It is set apart from the extended goatee by the inclusion of sideburns.[12]
Hollywoodian Leonardo DiCaprio 2014 (cropped).jpg A full beard that features a goatee, full mustache and horizontal chinstrap with all hairs on the upper cheeks and sideburns removed.[13]
Ned Kelly beard Jubilé Chabal-Nallet - 20150604 - Sébastien Chabal 1.jpg A beard with the length of more than 20 cm. A Ned Kelly beard is a style of facial hair named after 19th-century Australian bushranger and outlaw Ned Kelly.
