67 Positive Words to Think and Be Happy

Sometimes we are fast approaching the end of a chapter in our lives and headed towards the new one – a chapter that plunges us into the unknown, a chapter in the future that has not yet been written. But how to envision a better future and create a better self in new chapter? Ending the current chapter may prove to be difficult, especially since you may haven’t reached certain goals for yourself or maybe you didn’t make inspired choices all the time.

Or maybe it’s not even acknowledging on a conscious level what could’ve been better, but sometimes it’s even the passage of time that can make us nostalgic for what was and fearful for what’s to come. However, there are ways in which you can bring everything into a healthy perspective and get ready for the new chapter ahead.

Envision a Better Future and Create a Better Self in New Chapter

1. Think About Your Biggest Accomplishments

It’s important that when a chapter draws to an end you take the time to sit in silence, in a comfortable environment and think about everything that occurred during this passing chapter. But most of all, think of the beginning of the chapter and how it started for you. Where were you? What was your emotional state, what were your struggles? What were your accomplishments back then? Then slowly let your mind glide over the following months, one by one, allowing it to remember the memorable events that happened in each of these months.

Most of all, while doing this exercise, emphasize what you managed to do for yourself and your own wellbeing. Maybe you’ve built a new friendship or developed your professional network. Perhaps you’ve taken more time for self-care, you engaged in a healthier lifestyle or you managed to travel more. Whatever it is, take the time to appreciate yourself for creating these opportunities in your life and notice how you’re slowly pushing towards a more grateful and more positive you.

2. Take Note of What Impact People Had In Your Life

We tend to get so caught up in our lives sometimes that we forget to notice the people we come across day-to-day or even those who came and stayed for good. This is why it’s essential that you gather your thoughts, zoom out and think of your last years in an ensemble. You may even go beyond this and take note of everyone who came into your life and helped you become the person you are today. Who are the people that helped you transform in the amazing version of yourself you are today? Acknowledge their positive impact and take advantage of this opportunity to send them nurturing and empowering thoughts. This will not only bring serenity into your life, but it will also help you consolidate these important relationships if they are still ongoing.

3. Envision a Better Future Without Boundaries

This step is absolutely crucial if you want to move towards a better, more fulfilling you in which you can reach your goals and live the life you’ve always dreamt of. For this you need to get in touch with that side of yourself that is absolutely limitless, that has no worries or doubts, that doesn’t rationalize in any way. The side of yourself where your heart rules over everything and where it gets to decide where you’ve headed the coming future.

What’s inside your heart? Use creative writing and jot it down on paper, draw it or paint – there is no right or wrong way to this. Take as much time as you need during the exercise and afterward so you can contemplate what came out when you truly let your heart express itself freely. Giving voice to your deepest desires can have tremendous power in helping them shape up into reality.

All in all, the end of a chapter in your life is not meant to be rushed or taken very lightly. It’s rather an opportunity to have the clarity you need to understand what has been and see where you’re headed. It’s also a chance to set intentions both towards what you want to accomplish and towards the person you want to become. It all starts from the core of your being – if you align yourself with your deepest truth, the rest will gradually come into your life as you need it to.

Envision a Better Future and Create a Better Self in New Chapter

Meditation is one of the most delightful ways to start our mornings with. Don’t get me wrong, doing this activity anytime during the day can be beneficial for both our mental and physical health, but mornings have a special vibe to them!  Breathing in, breathing out, and letting ourselves go with the flow is just easier in the mornings, right after our good night’s sleep.

There are a lot of people who include meditation in their morning routines, which I personally find it smart to do. You don’t really need more than five to ten minutes to meditate if you really focus on your thinking. Get rid of distractions and just be yourself, alone, with your thoughts.

So why mornings? Whenever we wake up, we feel powerful and determined to begin our day, don’t we? Pressing stop on that ‘strength’ and letting our feelings flow will release the pressure of ‘having to go through the day.’ If we meditate in the morning and truly understand what is that we desire from ourselves during the day, the pressure of ‘being good enough’ will go away. We are going to be thankful for the opportunity to live, and no more. Isn’t this a great way to begin our day? Take a look at the following reasons to start your day meditating and give it a try, will you?

1. No distractions

Mornings are known for their quietness and stillness. When we wake up, the world around us seems to be so static, so motionless. It’s like we stopped time, and we are alone on our little planet. That is why meditation during this time of the day is so beneficial.

Our minds and bodies are going to respond to the stillness, and together they will create the perfect environment for our meditation. That happens neither at lunch nor in the evening. During the day, everything moves so quickly, most of the times leaving no room for us to focus on our own thoughts.

2. Choose spiritual over material

So many people believe that drinking a cup of coffee in the morning and having a good breakfast will keep them going through the day. While it might be true for some, my experience has taught me the opposite. If I do not think about myself in the morning, when will I do it? Coffee, food, TV shows… they are all just material things which lack relevance if our minds are not doing well.

For me, developing spiritually little by little every day brings me lots of benefits, while “developing materialistically” would probably keep me at the same spiritual level. As a writer at writing service, I can’t stop developing spiritually – I need to stay in “spiritual” shape for my clients, who need me all the time. Interacting with people every second of the day can be overwhelming, that is why I need to concentrate on myself in the morning. Help yourself so you can help others, right?

3. Meditation means better focus

As you already know, you will focus as much as possible on your thoughts during the sessions. This creates a very good habit for the future. While the hustle and bustle of the city doesn’t seem to be affecting us, it subconsciously makes us lose concentration and focus on our actions.

If you want to stay focused throughout your day, meditation is your best friend. Practicing it will develop new skills for you, and will teach you many interesting life coping techniques.  Just take a deep breath, and explore your mind.

4. No more useless stress

I am pretty sure I am not the only one in here stressing over life. We have so many things in our mind all the time that sometimes, the glass just becomes full. That is when we know we need to take a break, or quit our job, or just enjoy endless relaxation. Unfortunately, this is not how life works. While some of you are able to leave your offices whenever you want to, for us the best things don’t look so bright. That is why we need to find a balance in our lives in order to fully enjoy it.

Through meditating I found the balance I needed in my life, and I am very happy I chose it. Meditating each morning made me understand that stressing over different matters won’t change anything. Taking a deep breath and finding solutions will. Meditation clears your mind and opens new perspectives. It clarifies the meaning of life and defines problems as easily solvable. Don’t even get me started on how I have no more headaches thanks to this awesome practice!

5. Increasing awareness

I could spend days talking on this subject. There are just so many things out there to discover, and few humans choose to search for them. I know, it’s easier to stay in our comfort zones and relax, but how are we evolving if we are not seeking new answers? Self-awareness increases confidence, motivation, and understanding of the world itself. This makes us aware of all the decisions we take, therefore raising satisfaction.

More awareness means more consciousness about your life, and more consciousness means better decisions!

Wrapping-Up

Try to incorporate meditation into your morning routine. Wake up 10 minutes earlier than usual and start working on your spirituality. Drink a good coffee after, and think about the reasons you are doing this – aren’t they clearer now? Keeping both mentally and physically healthy is going to bring numerous advantages for you. So enjoy this wonderful and unique experience, and lose the overwhelming feeling of stress!

Meditation

Have you ever taken a step back and counted all your good habits? It’s a valuable exercise that can help boost your confidence and inspire positive feelings. In a lot of ways, it’s similar to gratitude journaling. First, be grateful for your good habits, and then work to create new ones.

1. Identify problem areas

The most productive place to start creating good habits is in replacing bad ones. For example, let’s say you’re drinking too much alcohol. Before you can replace that bad habit, you must admit that it’s an area of your life that needs to be changed. Accept you have a problem with addiction and plan your next steps. This step works for virtually any problem area. Stressed? Identify the causes of stress, and you can figure out how to eliminate them.

2. Brainstorm ideas to create good habits

If you don’t know how to replace your bad habits with good ones, that’s ok. It’s ok to ask for help. Talk to people you trust and come up with productive ideas. If you need help quitting a bad habit, this is the time to do so.

3. Pick a tangible goal

Maybe you plan to lose 10 pounds, exercise three times a week or to dedicate more hours to a passion project. It should be something that will take at least 10 weeks to accomplish. Experts say this is how long it takes to form new habits. Whatever your goal, be specific and write it down.

4. Don your positivity cap

Think about your good habits in terms of cans instead of cannots. Instead of focusing on the things you’ll have to give up to reach your goals and form healthy habits, think about the things you’ll gain. For example, if you’re eating healthier, you may gain energy, health, and confidence. This is the time to get excited about the good habits that are on the horizon!

5. Have patience with yourself

Once you start your goal, you’ll feel amazing. You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world on the first day of your new habit. Unfortunately, old habits die hard, and they will try to creep back into your life. Don’t let them! Understand that these feelings are natural and keep doing what you’re doing. If you falter a bit, don’t beat yourself up. Just pick yourself up and get back to that good habit.

6. Count the days

When you’re having trouble sticking to your new habits, remind yourself that it’s only 70 days out of your life. It may be even less if you’ve been at this for a while. After about 70 days, the things you’ve been doing to reach your goal should be habits instead of chores. After your initial 70 days, you’ll barely have to think about doing these things that are good for your body and mind. But you don’t have to think about any of that. For now, just focus on getting to the end of your goal.

We create good habits in the same way that we create bad ones. Remember, a habit is just something you’re doing. Why not spend your time doing things that are positive and productive? If you do, your thoughts will naturally shift to become more positive too!

good habits

Don’t worry, you are doing better than you think you are!

It’s understandable to feel “stuck” when things didn’t turn out the way you expected or you don’t think you are supposed to be where you are now. Everything seems to be going wrong. You get depressed. You get discouraged. You raise existential questions, and although it can be a good thing because you will reach some realizations about what you can do to change the direction of your life, it is also very likely that you may fixate on what is missing.

Maybe it’s time to look around you and appreciate what you have, claim the power to change what you can, and see life as glass half-full. Here are 12 signs you are doing better than you think you are.

1. You have all the basic human needs.

According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the very basics are the physiological needs: food, water, shelter, clothes, education, and sanitation. Now, look around you. If you have all these basic human needs, consider yourself blessed. You may not be rich enough to have a big house or have the abundance of food and clothing, but as long as you have a roof over your head, are able to eat whatever and whenever you like, and you have clothes to wear, your life is better than others’.

2. You value your relationships.

You have friends and family that support you in everything you do. You now understand that quality is more important than quantity. You learned to let go of toxic people in your life, and devote your time and effort to those who deserve it. You give them time, and treat them the way you wanted to be treated. You value their emotions and you don’t take them for granted.

3. You love unconditionally.

You are not the selfish person you were before. You know when to give and when to take. You love unconditionally without asking or expecting anything in return. That alone makes you a better person. You understand the differences and uniqueness of each individual, and you accept them.

4. You have goals and dreams.

It may seem like you’ve been trying your best to reach your dreams, but they are still far from happening. As long as you still have goals that you want to accomplish, and you don’t stop trying, you are still doing better than you think you are. You just have to be more patient, and eventually, you’ll get there. Pursue your passions and chase after your dreams.

5. You have a healthy dose of fear and the courage to face them.

A healthy dose of fear is good. It keeps people grounded and serves as practice for making sound decisions. Having the courage to face your fear and eventually defeat it is one of the characteristics of a mentally strong person. You don’t let fear hold you back, and you can make your way around it.

6. You are a changed person and you learned from your mistakes.

You do not let your past define you and you are not the same person you were before. You acknowledged and learned from your mistakes and you treat them as valuable lessons in life. They say experience is the best teacher and you definitely learned how to do things differently when you encounter the same issues next time.

7. You welcome challenges and seek opportunities.

You take on new challenges with enthusiasm and regard weaknesses as opportunities for self-improvement. You push yourself to your limits and discover something new about yourself. You realize how strong you have become. New opportunities excite you and you look forward to the future.

8. You can handle rejection well.

If you experience rejections in the past, chances are, you can better handle any rejections that may come your way. You don’t beat yourself up or base your self-worth on one incident. Instead, you can turn it into an opportunity for self-growth. You grow stronger with each rejection and you become better.

9. You were able to pull yourself up and bounce back from bad situations.

We all have problems; the only difference is how we solve them. They say it’s not how you fall, but how you get back up that counts. It is as simple as passing the most difficult subjects when you almost failed. That is already something to be proud of.  There is that rewarding feeling when you are able to overcome a huge obstacle in your life or get past something that seemed impossible at the time. If you do, give yourself a pat on the back because you have become a better person.

10. You don’t let yourself go and you prioritize your health.

You understand that health is the most important thing to prioritize in order for you to accomplish other things. Even if you are preoccupied with life, you don’t let yourself go. You take care of your physical appearance, you maintain your weight, and you try to live a healthy lifestyle. You know what to do when you don’t feel good or who to turn to when you need help to stop feeling bad.

11. You add value to the world by helping out other people.

Sometimes in order to feel blessed, we must first be a blessing to other people. You feel good when you are able to help people in need. You feel needed when your friends or family turn to you for help. You feel the joy when you are able to solve another person’s problem even as you contemplate yours. Sometimes, you might even feel that your struggles are nothing compared to theirs, which makes your problems would seem like a vacation to others. Simply being nice to people is already a big deal. You also know that empathy is a gift. You may not realize it because it may not seem much to you, but you are already making a difference in their lives.

12. You have a healthy mindset.

You are self-aware and positive. Although situations bring you down sometimes, you can still look back and laugh about it. You always try to strike a balance in all aspects of your life and you don’t let little things bother you. Your path may still be unclear, but you still move forward and make choices that benefit you. You understand that you cannot change the past, but you know you can change what happens from now on, as long as you take full responsibility for your life.

If you can relate to these, and realize that you have them in you, then you are doing better than you think you are. Do not get blindsided by the things that seem to be not working in your life and focus on those that do. You may not be happy with the way things are right now, but you still have the chance to change and have a brighter future.

Today I started a new project called 100 Good Thoughts About Me and Think Good About Myself.  I used the tags: #100goodthoughtsaboutme and #thinkgoodaboutmyself.

Can I think 100 good thoughts about myself?

I hope so. Well… let me start with #affirmation1

The first good thing that I think about myself is:

“I see beauty, therefore, I am beautiful, inside and out!”

Yesterday I took a walk in Bucharest Victory Square and I saw, touched and made pictures of the roses there. There are a lot of roses in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. We, Romanians love roses. You can find roses even stitched on our traditional Romanian blouses.

It was evening and the moon started to shine.

Red roses

And… also yesterday… I made a video in the center of Victory Square with beautiful roses.

And… today… I made some selfies

1. Don’t take your parents for granted. Your parents may nag you, and you may feel as if they don’t understand you. But they love you unconditionally, so appreciate them as often as you can.

2. Getting a bad grade isn’t the end of the world. In a few years, you won’t even remember most of your grades. If you get a bad grade, learn from your mistakes and prepare better for the next exam.

3. Use the Internet as a tool for education more than entertainment. The Internet can keep you entertained for hours. But with sites like Udemy, Udacity and How Stuff Works, the Internet can also make you a far more educated person.

4. Stress is a fact of life, but it should never become a way of life. This means that it’s normal to feel stressed and tired once in a while. But if you feel stressed and tired almost every day, then you need to reevaluate your life to see what you ought to be doing differently.

5. Learn to manage your money. As a student, you probably don’t have tons of money. That’s a good thing, because you can learn to spend, save, invest and give with little risk. Learn money management skills while you’re still young!

6. Make sleep a priority. Research has proven that sleep is essential for health and brain function. Make it a priority to get eight hours of sleep a night, and you’ll be a happier and better student.

7. Ask for help when you need it. There’s no shame in asking for help. If you can’t find the answer on Google, don’t hesitate to ask your teachers or parents. They’ll be more than willing to assist you.

8. Write things down. Your brain isn’t a perfect storage device, so write things down. Use a notebook or an app like Google Keep to ensure that you don’t forget anything important. If you write things down, you’ll be a more organised and effective student.

9. If you need motivation to study, go to the library. When you’re surrounded by people who are studying, you’ll feel inspired to study. Don’t underestimate the effect your environment has on your motivation. This study tip is extremely valuable!

10. Learn to embrace challenges rather than avoid them. Choose to see challenges as fun opportunities to learn. Even if you can’t overcome the challenge, you would have still grown as a person.

11. Don’t blame others. I used to blame my teachers, parents and peers for almost every problem I faced. Don’t be like me. The sooner you stop blaming others, the sooner you’ll learn to take full responsibility for your life.

12. Go to every single class. If the class is boring, see it as an opportunity to improve your ability to focus. If the class is about a topic you’ve learned before, see it as an opportunity to review the information.

13. Be grateful. Grateful students are happy students. No matter what situation you’re in, there’s always something to be thankful for: school, friends, family, food, health, nature, technology, etc.

14. Don’t take shortcuts. It’s tempting to take shortcuts, but resist the urge to do so. The more shortcuts you take, the less you’ll learn and the less you’ll grow as a person. Don’t shortchange yourself.

15. Be kind to yourself. Do you ever tell yourself that you’re lazy, ugly, dumb or irresponsible? Would you ever say those things to your best friend? Be kind to yourself, and learn to become your own best friend. In fact, research has proven that self-compassion is a key component of success.

16. Spend more time thinking about others than yourself. If you spend most of your time thinking about yourself, you’ll be unhappy. No matter how many good things there are going on in your life, you’ll be tempted to ask yourself questions like “Why can’t I be as popular as her?” or “Why are my parents so strict?” Instead, focus on helping others and you’ll be a happier student.

17. Say no without feeling guilty. Leading an effective student life is all about knowing what your priorities and values are. If there are activities or opportunities that aren’t aligned with your priorities, say no with confidence.

18. Don’t rely on others for things that are your own responsibility. I used to rely on others to remember things or run errands on my behalf. But I now realise that this was irresponsible behaviour. Don’t rely on other people for things that you should handle yourself.

19. Exercise regularly. Exercise is good for your body and your brain. So if you think you don’t have time to exercise, you actually don’t have time not to exercise. Exercise will make you a healthier and more effective student.

20. Don’t try to remember things; make them impossible to forget. One of the most important traits to develop when you’re in school is dependability. To become a dependable student, make it impossible to forget things, e.g. submitting homework, bringing a textbook to school, asking your parents to sign a consent form. Use a diary, sticky note or app to ensure that you don’t forget.

21. Ask yourself throughout the day, “What’s important now?” We often do what we feel like doing at the moment – even if that behaviour isn’t in our long-term interests. To fight this tendency, ask yourself, “What’s important now?” The answer will usually be clear.

22. Look for the good in every situation. For example, I once read about a woman who was exhausted after working at a restaurant for 14 hours straight in a day. She exclaimed, “I’m tired, but it feels so good to have spent all my energy doing something meaningful like work!” With an attitude like that, you’ll be a winner in life for sure.

23. Celebrate the successes of others. Your life as a student may feel like a competition, but it isn’t. Celebrate the accomplishments and successes of your peers, and don’t be a sore loser.

24. Don’t feel as if you need to have it all figured out. As a teenager, I used to think that I would have everything figured out by the time I finished school. But I still don’t feel as if I have everything figured out, and I don’t think I ever will. Life is a continual journey of learning and maturing – learn to enjoy the journey!

25. Spend time with people who have the same (or similar) values and goals as you. All of us are influenced greatly by the people we surround ourselves with. Choose to surround yourself with people who will inspire you to become a better person and student.

26. No experience in life is wasted. To paraphrase Tony Robbins, cultivate the belief that life is happening for you, not to you. If you believe that life is happening for your good, you’ll be able to see even challenges and frustrations in a positive light.

27. Don’t expect to become an educated person just by going to school. School is a crucial part of your education, but it’s just one part. Why? Because there are many skills you won’t master through formal education alone, e.g. persuasion, negotiation, design thinking, adaptive thinking. Take a proactive approach toward learning these types of skills through these must-read books for students, videos, online courses and real-world experiences.

28. Say “thank you” and “sorry” often. Don’t just say these words for the sake of saying them. If you mean it when you say “thank you” and “sorry”, you’ll build stronger relationships with both your friends and family.

29. Don’t worry about being popular or cool. Popularity is overrated. Responsibility, duty, excellence, kindness, courage and generosity aren’t – so focus on these instead.

30. Be curious. For most of my life as a student, I only learned information that was going to be tested on the exam. But later on, when I became a curious student who wanted to learn about all kinds of things, I started to enjoy school more. Not only that, I started to enjoy life more, because I realised that there’s so much beauty in the world around us. Start becoming more curious today!

31. Every choice you make shapes your character, so choose wisely. As a student, you make hundreds of choices every day: what to eat, how to spend your money, who to talk to, what clothes to wear, how hard to work, etc. Every decision shapes your character and destiny, so don’t take it lightly.

32. 90% of success is doing what others aren’t willing to do. Most students aren’t willing to do the extra assignment, proofread the essay one more time, put their tablet away when it’s time to focus, or delete the distracting apps on their phone. Be the student who is willing to do those things – and more. If you adopt this mindset in life, you’re almost guaranteed to become successful.

33. You’re never too young to make an impact. As a student, I thought of myself as a “kid” who couldn’t make an impact. But just look at these children and teenagers who are making huge contributions to the world. No matter how old you are, believe you can contribute, and start small in whatever way you can.

34. Assume the best of others. Many disagreements arise because we assume the worst of others. We assume that others are selfish and inconsiderate. But this is rarely true. If you assume the best of others, you’ll make an effort to understand their perspective. This, in turn, will enable you to resolve conflicts more quickly.

35. Invest in the relationships that matter most. Relationships must be nurtured – this takes time. List the people who mean the most to you. Make an intentional effort to invest in these relationships, at least on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

36. The grass isn’t greener on the other side; the grass is greener where you water it. (This is my shortened version of a quote from Robert Fulghum.) Do you ever think to yourself, “If only I went to a different school… If only I were born in a different city… If only I were better-looking…”? If so, remember that the grass is greener where you water it. “Water the grass” by choosing to have a positive attitude and by taking action, instead of complaining.

37. Everything worth doing takes time and effort. This applies to grades, relationships, career, character, and more. If you want to go somewhere meaningful and rewarding in life, there are no shortcuts.

38. Compliment others sincerely. Do this as often as you can, preferably daily. This is a simple way to appreciate others and make their day just a little bit brighter.

39. Forgive others and yourself. If you do this, you won’t be filled with anger and resentment. If you extend forgiveness freely, your life will be more peaceful and joyous.

40. To be successful, you must learn how to deal with negative emotions. When you’re feeling frustrated, angry, disappointed or sad, you’re more likely to make bad decisions. You can’t avoid all negative emotions, but you can learn to manage them so they don’t derail you.

41. Become reasonably good at public speaking. I’m not saying that everyone should become a professional speaker. But I am saying that over the course of your life you’ll have many opportunities to speak in public. So you might as well become proficient at it sooner rather than later (or never).

42. Attitude matters more than intelligence or talent. As Zig Ziglar once said, “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” Intelligence and talent play a part in how successful you become as a student and in life. But attitude matters much more. Start cultivating a positive and resilient attitude today.

43. Be present. When I was a student, I spent far too much time thinking about my past mistakes and worrying about the future. I spent far too little time in the present: living in the moment, appreciating the small things, being 100% focused, seeing the beauty in what I was learning, cherishing relationships. Wherever you are, be present.

44. Show your parents respect and appreciation. This might be hard for you to do, especially if you think your parents are unreasonable or overbearing. But I encourage you to do it anyway. First of all, it’s the right thing to do. Second of all, when parents don’t receive respect and appreciation from their children, they tend to become even more unreasonable and overbearing. So it’s in everyone’s best interests that you show your parents respect and appreciation.

45. Fear should usually be seen as a signal to advance, not retreat. Most of the time, when we feel afraid our life isn’t actually in danger. Common fears include public speaking, failure, rejection, and the fear of learning. As such, fear should usually be seen as something to move towards, because in doing so you’ll experience personal growth.

46. Don’t watch TV. Studies show that watching too much TV is linked to depression. Watching some TV won’t hurt you, but if you decide not to watch TV at all, you’ll have more time for meaningful and productive activities. If you need to de-stress, check out this list of science-backed ways to do so.

47. Pay attention in class. If you do this, you won’t need to spend so much time studying because you would have already understood most of the concepts taught in class. If you have trouble paying attention, I recommend that you improve your focus gradually. For example, you could start by setting a timer for 10 minutes, as a reminder that you’ll pay attention for just 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes are up, you can allow yourself to be distracted for a minute or two before you start another 10-minute “focus session”. Every day, increase the length of the “focus session” by one minute.

48. When faced with a problem, ask yourself, “What is one thing I can do now to improve the situation?” I’ve underlined those three words/phrases for good reasons. When you focus on just one thing you can do, you won’t feel overwhelmed. When you focus on what you can do now, you’ll be more motivated to take action right away. And when you focus on what you can do now to improve the situation, you’ll almost certainly be able to think of at least one productive action to take. Ask this powerful question whenever you’re faced with a problem, and you’ll become a more effective student and person.

49. Looking successful is different from being successful. Looking successful is about prestige, popularity, status and accomplishments. Being successful is about purpose, relationships, character and contribution. As a student, ensure that you’re working towards being successful, not just looking successful.

50. Focus on progress, not perfection. There’s no such thing as a perfect student. After all, we’re flawed human beings. If you aim to achieve perfection, you’ll be disappointed, and you may lose motivation. On the other hand, if you focus on progress, you’ll realise that getting better is its own reward. This is the key to being an effective, fulfilled student.

Everyday Power

It’s easy to get a bit stuck when it comes to thinking of adjectives to describe certain people. For example, if you know someone who thinks deeply, you might be interested in coming up with a word to describe them. This article will help you think of the best synonyms.

Best Words for a Person Who Thinks a Lot

The preferred alternatives are “contemplative,” “thoughtful,” and “introspective.” These work well to show that someone spends a great deal of their time thinking. Often, they’ll think about things much more than they think, and people will notice that they don’t say much.

Contemplative

“Contemplative” is a good adjective to show that someone is thinking about something. It relates to the word “contemplate,” showing that someone is quietly thinking about something serious, hoping to come to a solution.

The definition of “contemplative,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “involving quiet and serious thought for a period of time.”

  • You’re very contemplative, aren’t you? I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone to spend as much time in their own thoughts as you.
  • I’m quite contemplative because I like to think about all possible outcomes. I don’t like being caught off guard.
  • I want to be more contemplative because I feel like I always act in a spontaneous way. It hasn’t been very helpful so far.

Thoughtful

“Thoughtful” works well to show that someone puts care or thought into things. It can relate to them thinking hard about what they might want to get someone as a gift (i.e. positive thoughtfulness) or thinking hard about a potentially disastrous situation (i.e. negative thoughtfulness).

The definition of “thoughtful,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “carefully considering things.”

  • She’s quite thoughtful, so you can expect her to think about this long and hard. You won’t find her making any rash decisions.
  • I’m not as thoughtful as you think I am. I’m often quiet because I don’t know what to say. It’s nothing to do with me getting lost in my mind.
  • I’m very thoughtful when I need to be. I make sure to consider all possible aspects of an event before I make any final decisions.

Introspective

“Introspective” people are able to look into themselves to come up with ideas. They will be able to spend a lot of time with their own thoughts and feelings. The longer they spend with them, the better the outcome tends to be for an introspective person.

The definition of “introspective,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “examining and considering your own ideas, thoughts, and feelings, instead of talking to other people about them.”

  • He’s very introspective about these things. To be honest, it makes it quite challenging to try and talk to him. I don’t think he’s a social guy.
  • You’re too introspective for your own good. You’ll be better off opening yourself up to the outside world and seeing what’s out there.
  • I think she’s a bit too introspective about these matters. She’s going to drive herself insane if she isn’t careful!

Ruminative

“Ruminative” is a great adjective to show that someone is thinking deeply about something. They will often spend a lot of time thinking about this thing before coming to any final decisions. The longer they think, the more satisfied with their answer they will be.

The definition of “ruminative,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “thinking deeply and for a long period.”

  • I know I act quite ruminative, but I do that because I want to make sure I set myself up for success. Does that make sense?
  • They’re a ruminative bunch. If you run an idea by them, it’ll take them an awfully long time to decide whether they like it or not.
  • I’m not trying to come across as overly ruminative, but I really do need to take some extra time to think about my answer here.

Meditative

“Meditative” people rely quite heavily on meditation in their lives. They will try to meditate (which means to think deeply and relax) when they need to come up with a solution to something.

If they can remove outside stimuli while being “meditative,” it encourages them to come up with a reasonable solution.

The definition of “meditative,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “involving serious thought or study.”

  • As a meditative soul, he wants to make sure that he provides the best options. That’s why he takes so long to ponder these ideas.
  • I need to be more meditative. I want to think deeper about these things before I make any decisions that I end up regretting.
  • I didn’t think you could get more meditative than that. To be honest, I’m quite surprised that you were able to get like that.

Pensive

“Pensive” people will often have a serious face about them when they think. Unlike some other words on this list which only talk about thinking in one’s own mind, “pensive” people allow their thinking to be portrayed in real time.

If you are around a pensive person, you’ll almost certainly know when they’re thinking hard about something. Their faces become quite a big giveaway.

The definition of “pensive,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “thinking in a quiet way, often with a serious expression on your face.”

  • Look at his pensive expression. I wonder what goes through his mind when he’s looking around at people like that.
  • You’re acting quite pensive right now. You need to calm down a little bit and let your emotions take over for once.
  • He’s very pensive, and I like that about him. It means he never comes up with a silly question. He always thinks about them first.

Preoccupied

“Preoccupied” is a good way of showing that someone is lost in their own thoughts. They will spend too much time worrying about something in their mind, making it much harder for them to operate when it comes to friends, family, or work.

When someone is preoccupied, you will have a hard time speaking to them. They might give you answers, but they will be made up of a few words at best, making it hard to have a reasonable conversation.

The definition of “preoccupied,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “thinking or worrying about something too much.”

  • I’m a little bit preoccupied with my own thoughts at the minute. I don’t mean to be annoying, but I’m definitely too busy to speak.
  • You’re so preoccupied thinking about whether or not it’s possible that you’re missing the chance to even give it a go.
  • Why do you always have to be so preoccupied? You make it so hard for us to understand what you want out of this gig.

Musing

“Musing” is the only verb we want to share on this list. It relates to someone who is thinking very carefully. They will spend a long time thinking just to make sure that they come to a decision that is the most beneficial to all the parties involved.

The definition of “musing,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “to think about something carefully and for a long time.”

  • She’s been musing about this for a very long time. I wonder what’s going through her mind right now. I can’t imagine it’s helpful.
  • You need to stop musing for a second. We need to come together and discuss what the outcome is supposed to be.
  • I would like to continue musing until I’ve come up with a better reason for all of this. Is that okay with you?

Reflective

“Reflective” shows that someone thinks back to things. It relates more to past events, where someone might be tied up on something they did wrong or something they might have been able to do better.

Reflective people can tend to dwell on the past. They often think deeply about their actions to try and better themselves for the future.

The definition of “reflective,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “thinking carefully and quietly.”

  • As reflective as he is, I really don’t think he’s got a chance here. He’s not going to be able to come up with a decent reason. I can tell.
  • I’m not reflective enough to act in that way. I like to be spontaneous, which means I don’t often give myself much time to think.
  • I want you to be a bit more reflective going forward, okay? I want you to show me that you’re capable of thinking deeply.

Philosopher

“Philosopher” is a noun used to talk about people who think for a living. Philosophers try and come up with ideas behind the meaning of life, which requires a great deal of thought to even scratch the surface.

The definition of “philosopher,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “someone who studies or writes about the meaning of life.”

  • He’s quite the philosopher I’ve heard. Apparently, he likes to spend his spare time getting lost in his own existential thoughts.
  • I want to be more philosophical with these things, but I don’t think my mind is cut out for thinking in those abstract ways.
  • I thought you would be a better philosopher than that, Mark. I guess I put too much faith in your knowledge!

Language lets us communicate with each other and share our ideas. Some linguists even suggest that language shapes our knowledge and thought. So, expanding our vocabulary by learning new, interesting words can help us communicate better and have more ideas.

The average English speaking knows around 12,000 -25,000 words, yet the Oxford English Dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use. So, most of us are missing out on knowing, using, and enjoying thousands of interesting words.

Some linguists suggest that if we don’t have a word for a certain, it is almost impossible to understand that concept. Linguist Benjamin Lee Whorf was an early proponent of this idea, suggesting different linguistic systems affected the thoughts and behaviour of language users.

He studied the language of the Brazilian Piraha people and found that they have no word for quantity. In their language, there is just a word for one, and a word for more than one. This meant that they did not understand the concept of quantity in the same way that we do.

So, if specific words can help us to understand concepts and broaden our knowledge and understanding of the world, it is worth spending some time learning some new, and interesting words.

Here are 15 interesting words to get you started on the journey to crafting a more varied and effective vocabulary.

1. Logophile

I am assuming that as you are reading this article, you may be something of a logophile or ‘lover of words’. Logophile comes from the Greek ‘logos’ meaning speech and ‘phile’ meaning lover or friend.

2. Quixotic

This interesting word is derived from the lead character in Don Quixote written by Miguel de Cervantes. In the novel, Quixote decides to become a knight in order to defend the helpless and destroy the wicked.

Because of this character, we call someone Quixotic if they are unrealistically optimistic or have a comically chivalrous approach to life.

Interestingly, the word scrooge was coined in the same way, a scrooge being a mean person and coming from the character Scrooge in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

3. Liminal

Liminal means on the edge of things or between things. It describes marshy landscapes that are neither really land or sea. However, it can also be used to describe states of consciousness. Dreams often occur in the liminal state between sleeping and waking.

4. Esoteric

The word esoteric is used to describe special knowledge that is available only to a select group of people. Belief systems that rely on secret information and practices are often described as esoteric.

Examples of esoteric doctrines include Masonic Lodges, the Theosophical Society, and the Eleusinian mysteries.

5. Numinous

Numinous is a delightful word that means spiritual or supernatural. The word can be applied to anything that is mysterious or surpasses our human understanding.

6. Epistemology

Epistemology is the study of knowledge. This branch of philosophy is specifically concerned with the origin, nature, methods, and limits of human knowledge. So, I guess it really describes the process of thinking about thinking.

7. Schadenfreude

Though schadenfreude is a lovely sounding word, feeling it is not something to be proud of. Schadenfreude means experiencing pleasure or satisfaction from the trouble, failure or humiliation of others.

8. Loquacious

Most of us know someone who is a little loquacious. They talk – a lot! Unfortunately, most of the things they talk about are interesting only to them. This makes them the worst person to get stuck with at a dinner party.

9. Hubris

Hubris is a concept that originated in ancient Greece and today describes excessive presumption, exaggerated pride or self-confidence – even arrogance. It’s a shame that such a nice word describes such a horrible personality trait.

10. Bibliophile

A Bibliophile is a lover of books. The word comes from the Greek biblion ‘book’ + philos ‘lover or friend’. Bibliophiles have a particular interest in beautiful or rare books and many also collect antiques and first editions.

11. Eurhythmic

Eurhythmic means having an aesthetically pleasing rhythm or structure. So, I guess that’s what makes it the perfect name for a band.

12. Fugacious

Fugacious means fleeting or transient. It is similar to the even more attractive ephemeral, which means lasting a very short time.

Many things in life are beautiful but fleeting, the life of a mayfly, the moment the sun goes down on a glorious summer’s day, or the brief time a rainbow decorates the sky. Perhaps it is their fugacious nature that makes these moments so special.

13. Elysian

If something is elysian, it is blissful or delightful. The word comes from the Greek “Elysian field,” where the heroic and the virtuous go after death. So, I suppose it is similar to heavenly.

14. Metanoia

Metanoia describes a profound, usually spiritual, transformation. This unusual word perfectly describes the process of changing one’s mind, heart, spiritual direction, or way of life in a radical way.

This seems like a good word to use instead of the overused ‘enlightened’ or ‘spiritual awakening‘.

15. Lollygag

Lollygag is my favorite new interesting word. It means to spend time in an aimless or lazy way, to idle about or goof off. So, I guess lollygagging is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

So that’s enough interesting words for today. I am off to spend the afternoon lollygagging.

We’d love to hear your favourite interesting words. Please share them with us in the comments.
