These words are perfect for everyday appreciation and special events, such as penning down heartfelt Thanksgiving messages to employees.
Also, be sure to keep in the loop the supervisor of the person who you are appreciating. This ensures the recipient knows that their good work is being noticed by management.

If you’re working on your resume, you likely understand the importance of words. For example, you know that you should include keywords from the job listing in your resume and cover letter. This helps your resume get past the first check by computer software and proves you’ve got the skills needed to get the job done.
But you also want your resume to stand out from the crowd. While things like good communication skills, teamwork, leadership, and responsibility are important, these terms are used on almost everyone’s resume. If your hiring manager has considered dozens of applications, these words can seem tired and blase.
What, then, can you do? Try some new words on for size – resume action words.
You will want to target your CV or resume to the job you are applying for and tailor your wording to fit the company culture. That’s why we’ve identified a whopping 350 power words for you to choose from.
What Are Action Words?
Action words or verbs describe action – what someone or something is doing. You want your resume to be filled with action words. Why?
Think of the old adage “actions speak louder than words.” Instead of simply telling your hiring manager that you have a certain quality or skill, you can show them by using action words. Sometimes, you can rearrange a sentence to replace nouns (things) or adjectives (descriptive words like “organized” or “punctual”) with sentences whose verbs convey the same information. For example:
- Instead of stating that you are punctual or on time, say “Completed projects ahead of deadline.”
- Instead of stating that you are organized, say “Categorized expenditure reports to identify unnecessary costs, saving the company $2,500 in one year.”
Do you see the action words highlighted with italics? Sentences that show the quality you are trying to display – and its results – can make a more powerful impression than listing the word alone.
Not all the power words on our list are verbs, however. For example, you’ll find that our list includes power words to use with exact numbers. It also has a list of unique adjectives, or descriptive words, to try. Though these are not action words, they are powerful words.
Active vs. Passive Voice
Another thing to consider is that you should favor active voice over passive voice. What does this mean? Again, it has to do with verbs.
Simply put, “In a sentence written in the active voice, the subject of sentence performs the action. In a sentence written in the passive voice, the subject receives the action.” Passive sentences are also wordier, and they can be confusing. Consider an example.
Active voice: I submitted the resume.
Passive voice: The resume was submitted by me.
The difference is clear – active sentences get right to the point and put you, the candidate, right at the center of the action.
How can you identify the passive and active voices in your resume? If the subject of the verb is “I” – if you are the one doing the action – you’ve probably achieved active voice. If you see helping verbs like “was,” “were,” or “will,” before the primary action word, that’s passive voice. Try to rewrite passive sentences. Then, your resume will leave a more powerful impression.
Words Not to Use in Your Resume
What tired, overused words do hiring managers not want to see? Consider the following.
- Leadership terms like “in charge of,” “responsible for,” “managed,” “led,” or “handled”
- Self-descriptive terms including “hard worker,” “go-getter,” “strategic thinker,” “specialized in,” “team player,” “results-driven,” or “detail-oriented”
- Adjectives such as “good,” “excellent,” “better,” “best,” “expert,” “super,” or “great”
- Overused buzz words such as “outside the box,” “synergized,” and “ninja”
If you’re tempted to use any of the above, you’ll find good action words for resume replacement on the list below.
Essentially, if you’re thinking of typing in a common word, take a moment to think of other words with the same meaning. Using a thesaurus can help.
Action Words for Resume: 350 Power Words to Use
We’ve compiled this resume action words list to help you energize your resume with powerful verbiage. You’ll notice that the words on the list could be proceeded by the pronoun “I” – “I acquired,” “I administered,” etc. When you are writing your resume, however, you can leave our the personal pronoun, resulting in a sentence like this:
- “Acquired 37 new clients within six months.”
- “Administered medication to a ward of 20 patients.”
This saves space and makes the resume quicker and easier to skim. After all, it is understood that the information applies to you, the applicant!
We’ve arranged the words into several categories. They are grouped around subjects like leadership words, teamwork words, number words, etc. In some cases, words may apply to more than one category.
Should you use all 350 of the following words in your resume? Of course not! That would result in one very lengthy resume. Also, not all of the power words below will apply to your circumstances or field. But, the abundance of words gives you plenty to choose from.
Tip: If any of the following words are unfamiliar, look them up in a dictionary before using them in your resume. Misusing a word will hurt your credibility. In fact, using a word in the wrong context could do more harm than simply supplying one of the overused words listed above.
Finally, don’t forget to research and use applicable resume keywords in addition to these power words. A powerful, stand-out resume still won’t make the cut if you don’t include the keywords that the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software and the hiring manager are looking for.

Lesson Summary:
Here are the 8 power words I recommend for your English job interview and why.
Number One: Responsible
Every recruiter or interviewer, every employer is looking for someone who is going to do their job and take ownership of it.
What that means is they can rely on you to do the job you’re supposed to do. They don’t need to worry that you might try to avoid doing work or give other people all of your responsibilities.
Number Two: Collaborate
If you want to highlight that you work well with others, then the verb collaborate does that perfectly.
In fact, the precise definition of collaborate means to work with other people to achieve an end goal.
Number Three: Initiative
To take the initiative means is that you do what needs to be done without anyone asking you.
Employers love this because is also shows self-confidence and a commitment to hard work.
Number 4: Lead
Someone who leads inspires others to take action.
Number 5: Resolve
This one is all about problem solving. When we use the word resolved, it communicates that everyone who was part of the problem or disagreement was satisfied in the end, and that is a very positive outcome.
Number 6: Measure
This is about being as specific with your interview answers.
If you want to tell your interviewer that you increased sales last year, that’s fantastic, but if you can make it measurable by saying that you increased sales by 7.9% last year, that is even more powerful.
Number 7: Result
If you have a story about how you collaborated in the past or that you led a team, the interviewer will absolutely want to know what was the end result.
For example, if you have a story about a conflict that you help resolve, what happened after the resolution? Did the team successfully complete a project under budget? Did you win an award for best marketing campaign of the year? What was the final result of the action steps that you took?
This is a great word to pair with the other words on this list. You might talk about an opportunity that you had leading a team and then at the end, you could say the result of that was and then share what happened in the end.
Number 8: Example
This is kind of a weird choice, isn’t it?
Every question in a job interview is an opportunity for you to share an example, a real example, from your past that highlights that, yes, you can do the job and you’re the right choice.
Don’t miss this opportunity.
Now that you have 8 power words to use in your English job interview, let’s talk about 1 word to avoid.
Team player.
Are you shocked? Are you thinking, “But everyone uses it!”
That’s exactly the problem. Everyone uses it.
And as a result, it has lost its power. It’s no longer an effective word to use.
The best way that you can stand out in a job interview is to use power words that accurately describe you and avoid using cliches.
