Hi
Is there a word that groups both fruits and vegetables? Similar to how celestial bodies can mean stars and planets, and how herpetile refers to reptiles and amphibians.
Thanks!

Hi, Copy.
What sort of contexts is this word «produce» usable in?
Can I use it in daily-life contexts/conversations, e.g:
Produce (vegetables and fruits) are essential to human health.
India is famous in growing produce (vegetables and fruits).
Lun eats a lot of produce (vegetables and fruits).
-
#4
I would only use it in your second sentence: «India is famous for the quality of its produce.»
In the other two cases, I would use «fruits and vegetables.» (And in the first, if you were to use it, it would be «Produce is …,» not «are.») And the usual order is «fruits and vegetables» rather than «vegetables and fruits.»
-
#5
I pronounce this «prah-doose».
I agree with the comments in post #4. As the definition says, we use it to talk about an agricultural product: in other words, when growing things and selling them, not when eating them. A couple more examples:
Yesterday we went shopping for produce.
We went to Whole Foods, which has a large produce section.
India exports many types of produce.

Thanks a lot, Copy and doji.
And the usual order is «fruits and vegetables» rather than «vegetables and fruits.»
May I dare to ask the reason please?
-
#7
No reason that I know of – just customary. For what it’s worth, it’s easier (for me) to say in that order.* Try it and see.
As for syllables in the three words, it’s 1-1-4 for «fruits and vegetables» and 4-1-1 for «vegetables and fruits.» Easier to work your way up from simple to complicated.

Fruits and vegetables!!! Here, we list some common fruits and vegetables in English with example sentences. This list will help you improve and expand your English vocabulary.
It is common knowledge that both fruits and vegetables provide generally healthy benefits for you and me. Both are always present in any diet plan aimed for healthy living.
Aside from the fact they are both parts of plants, what are the other similarities shared by the two? And incidentally, are there any significant differences between fruits and vegetables?
Both share the distinction of coming from plants and both provide nutrition and health benefits if consumed. Some fruits are even classified as vegetables at the same time. However, there are also differences between the two. Basing on taste, fruits generally have a sweet or tart flavor profile that can come quite handy for desserts, juices, and snacks. Vegetables on the other hand are eaten as part of a dish or main course because of the mild and savory taste they have.

Фрукты на английском
Начнем с грамматического аспекта: у самого слова «фрукт» у англичан есть целых 2 формы множественного числа: Fruit и Fruits. Если мы думаем просто о фруктах, не конкретизируя его тип, используется форма fruit. К примеру, eating fruit in autumn is very healthy — осенью очень полезно кушать фрукты. Или про магазин говорят — fruit and vegetables.
А если мы думаем о видах фруктов, используется форма fruits. Пример: She going to try exotic fruits in Thailand
