Examples of Acronyms. An acronym is a pronounceable word formed from the first letter (or first few letters) of each word in a phrase or title. Using shortened forms of words or phrases can speed up communication. Explore this useful shorthand with these examples of acronyms.
What’s it called when each letter of a word stands for something?
‘UNICEF’ is an acronym. ‘ACLU’ is an initialism. The definition of acronym, “a word formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term,” means that acronyms can be differentiated from other abbreviations because they are pronounceable as words.
What is it called when you say a word for a letter?
The phonetic language – also known as the ‘spelling alphabet’ or the NATO phonetic alphabet – is used by professional communicators, especially police, military and other emergency and armed forces, to identify letters precisely, either when communicating initials, abbreviations or spellings of words.
Words from Letters FAQ
What Words Can I Make With These Letters?
That is the, «To be, or not to be,» question of all word games. There are usually many words you can make. Sometimes, there won’t be many at all. Just remember, sometimes it pays to make a word with fewer than the maximum number of points possible because it sets you up better for your next turn.
What Is the Longest English Word?
In the Oxford English Dictionary, the longest word is FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION, which means «the act of deeming or estimating something as worthless. Other dictionaries contain the word PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS, which is coal miners’ «black lung disease.»
If you think that’s bad, German is worse. The longest word in German is DONAUDAMPFSCHIFFFAHRTSELEKTRIZITÄTENHAUPTBETRIEBSWERKBAUUNTERBEAMTENGESELLSCHAFT. FLOCCI…, at 29 letters, and PNEUMONO …, at 45 letters, combined aren’t that long! None of these words will fit on a crossword game board. Scrabble boards are 15 letters across, so the longest word, which also doubles as the word worth the most points, possible is OXYBENPHUTAZONE. It requires eight letters already be placed, none of them on any of the three triples or the double-letter squares, and it scores 1,778 points. No one has ever achieved it.
How Do You Find Words With Letters Missing?
The best way is to use our tool. Of course, you should never use it while playing competitive games because it would count as looking up words in the Official Scrabble Player’s Dictionary prior to playing. But, if you wanted to ask yourself, «Which words from letters in my rack can I make?» during a friendly Words With Friends game, then that would not be bad form. Outside of competition, study as many words as you want using the website. It’s an invaluable training tool!

This regexp will find unique first letters only:
r = /b(w)(?!.*b1)/gi;
This regexp says:
Find the first letter after a word break, but only if that same letter does not occur immediately after a word break later in the string (negative lookahead).
string = 'Take all first words for each letter... this is a test';
> string.match(r)
< ["w", "f", "e", "l", "i", "a", "t"]
To find one word per unique first letter:
r = /b((w)w*)(?!.*b2)/gi
> string.match(r)
< ["words", "for", "each", "letter", "is", "a", "test"]
As @karthik manchala mentioned in a comment, due to the limitations of regexp, this will only find the last word starting with each letter. To find the first word starting with each letter, you’d have to reverse the words in the string:
> string . split(' ') . reverse() . join(' ') . match(r) . reverse()
< ["Take", "all", "first", "words", "each", "letter", "is"]
Your initial regexp
/b(?!1)(w)/gi
was not functioning properly since the 1
must refer to an earlier capturing group.
A child’s name is their favorite word. There are many fun ways to encourage young students to start spelling their names without using a worksheet. Here are 10 ways for children to practice spelling their names.
1. Name Puzzles
Write the child’s name on a piece of cardstock. Cut the letters apart. The student puts the puzzle together.
2. Sentence Strip Matching
Program sentence strips with each child’s name. Then write the corresponding letters (or use letter stickers) on seasonal shapes. The students match the shapes to the correct letter on the sentence strip.
Star and basic shapes work well any time of year.
3. In My Name vs. Not in My Name
Print a sorting mat and provide a bowl of letter manipulatives. These could be letter tiles, stickers, or die-cut letters. Provide the students with a name card. To complete the center, the student chooses a letter from the bowl and then uses the name card to decide if it is a letter “In My Name” or “Not in My Name.”

5. Light Table Names
Light tables are very versatile and can be used to practice many skills, including helping students practice spelling their names. Print each child’s name and picture on paper or a transparency sheet to make this center. Students choose a name, then use transparent plastic letter tiles to spell it out.
6. Name Pockets
Fold a piece of cardstock in half. Use a long-armed stapler to section off the correct number of pockets. Write the letters of the child’s name on the pockets and the craft sticks. Put uppercase letters on one side of the stick and lower case on the other, to help children make a connection between the two. Complete Name Pocket instructions HERE!
7. Clothespin Dinosaurs
Print each child’s name on a dinosaur shape. Add a photo for younger students and mat onto cardstock or foam for durability. Students use their fine motor skills to match clothespins to each letter on the dinosaur.
8. Clothespin Folders

10. Letter Stamps
Letter stamps are a guaranteed crowd pleaser! Children can use their handy name card as a reference while they stamp their names on paper.
Name activities are always a hit because, for most young children, their name is their favorite and most important word. When the entire class is working on name activities, they begin to learn the letters of all friends in the class. It is a great springboard for alphabet knowledge! The name cards are from these Name Songs for Circle Time:

In 2008, a teenager known to his parents as George Garratt claimed the Guinness World Record for the longest personal name registered on a birth certificate when he changed his moniker to – wait for it – Captain Fantastic Faster Than Superman Spiderman Batman Wolverine Hulk And The Flash Combined.
The 19-year-old, like Miss Alphabet, said he carried out the legal name change ‘for a bit of a laugh’.
His claim had competition, however, in the form of one-year-old Autumn Sullivan Corbett Fitzsimmons Jeffries Hart Burns Johnson Willard Dempsey Tunney Schmeling Sharkey Carnera Baer Braddock Louis Charles Walcott Marciano Patterson Johansson Liston Clay Frazier Foreman Brown from Wolverhampton, whose parents kindly decided to giver her 25 middle names.
