Word for considerate of others

  • #1

When talking about considering other people’s needs, feelings etc, I often see native speakers write «be considerate of» or «be considerate to» others. Sometimes I even see them write «be considerate towards» others. For example:

Be considerate to others; clean up your own mess.

Is there any subtle difference between the choices of prepositions here?

Thank you. :)

  • #2

The choice of preposition is determined by a difference in meaning when we use the word ‘considerate’.

1. considering other people’s feelings and well-being when performing some action. That is, mindful of the fact that there are other people on this planet besides ourselves.

In your sentence, the ‘others’ do not need to be there for me to be ‘considerate’. I should leave the place tidy, ready for other uses at a later time/date.
Be considerate of others; clean up your own mess.

2. for this meaning, another person or persons are present, because it involves interpersonal behaviour. You are being considerate to or towards them. I’ve dug up some examples from the Internet:
«
It’s considerate to say «please» and «thank you» to people. It’s considerate to excuse yourself, rather than walking out and slamming the door.»

«It’s also considerate to be able to thank people truly and honestly for something they have done for you.»

Being a considerate flatmate — Unipol
www.unipol.leeds.ac.uk/Housing/…/Being_a_considerate_flatmate.asp
«It’s considerate to inform them face to face, giving them plenty of notice.»

Hopefully, others in the forum will be able to put some flesh on this skeleton.
