A typical use for this expression is when one recognizes a situation or a problem but is uncertain about its root cause, e.g.:

«In the past few weeks Peter has been acting like a totally different person but I cannot quite put my finger on it.»

Oxford-Paravia translates as: non riesco a individuarlo con precisione. Is there a more idiomatic way to express this?

I would say «It slipped my mind» is pretty much another way of saying «I can’t put my finger on it.» Both give the sense that there’s a particular memory acting the slippery fish.

«C’è qualcosa che mi sfugge» may well be the best possible translation, since we do not have anything quite like «I can’t quite put my finger on it» in Italian. However I can unferstand k_georgiadis’ misgivings since to me it’s not quite the same. I think Paravia’s «non riesco a individuarlo con precisione» is closer to the meaning of the English phrase.

If I say «there’s something odd about that guy but I can’t quite put my finger on it» I can perceive distinctly that there is something odd but I am at a loss to explain/describe that oddness. I would probably say something like «quel tipo ha qualcosa di strano (or che non mi convince) ma non so dire esattamente cosa».

in my opinion «c’è qualcosa che mi sfugge (in lui)» summerizes everything.
Then, of course, you may add all possible adjectives: weird, odd, mysterious, etc.

I still think that «c’è qualcosa che mi sfugge» doesn’t always fit as a translation. Take the following examples from Google:

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but The Sopranos just doesn’t seem up to the level of seasons past

Something about him bothers me, but I can’t quite put my finger on it

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there just seems to be something missing (from a film review)

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but the town depresses me

You wouldn’t be able to use «c’è qualcosa che mi sfugge» here, I don’t think (or at least it wouldn’t convey the same nuance).

Yes indeed, Giovannino; «I can’t put my finger on it» can be paraphrased as: «I sense/notice the situation/problem but I cannot define it exactly/I do not understand its root cause/I cannot put it into words.»

Obviously it’s similar to «mi sfugge«: «it slips away» because I can’t stop this «quickly moving thing», hopefully putting a finger on it I could stop its motion. Once stopped I can focus it and see actually what it is. In italy -to be more sure- we try to put the entire hand on it

O meglio, ho riletto la definizione del DeMauro del #12, è chiarissima: spiega il significato

Per esempio un pesce che sfugge (concretamente) alle mani del pescatore comparato (figurativamente) ad un concetto che sfugge alla comprensione.

Non vedo perché dovremmo «bandire» da questo topic il concetto di sfuggire (slip/escape) se è proprio la «radice» di tutti i figurativi derivati. Non sei d’accordo?
Forse ho capito cosa intendi, chiarisco che:

1) sfuggire di mente, di memoria (dimenticarsi)
2) sfuggire (allo sguardo, all’attenzione)
3) sfuggire alla comprensione (come in questo topic, come giustamente tu proponevi al post #8)
probabilmente k_georgiadis per «it escapes me» or «it slips my mind» pensava che tu intendessi il caso 1) mentre intendevi il 3).

I have never heard it used with reference to an actual person. More likely scenarios are:

I cannot (quite) understand you.
I cannot (quite) gauge you.
You are a mystery to me.

I am sure there are other ways (and they’ll probably come to me after I send this message!)
