What does “boring” mean? What does “annoying” mean? How are they different?

Learn the difference between “boring” and “annoying”. Check it out!

In today’s lesson, we’re going to talk about the words “boring” and “annoying.”

A lot of my English students have been confused about these words, so hopefully this short video will help
clear things up.
First, let’s talk about the word “annoying.” Something is annoying if it irritates you or if it bothers
you or causes you some kind of problem, or maybe if it makes you feel a little bit
uncomfortable.

So, for example, let’s say somebody’s making a noise like this…you’re trying to study and they
keep on making that noise. That is annoying.

That sound is annoying you, it’s causing you to not be able to focus well and it’s not a very pleasant sound to hear. So you don’t like it. It is annoying.

So, many things can be annoying. Sounds can be annoying. People can be annoying. Do you
know any annoying people? I’m sure you do.

A situation can be annoying. A song can be annoying, many things can be annoying.

Now let’s move on to the word “boring.” Now “boring” is also a negative term but it’s a little bit
different than “annoying.”

If something is boring, it’s not so bad, it just means it’s not interesting, or it is dull, in case you know that word.

So, let’s say that you are watching a movie and it’s not interesting, it’s a boring movie.

So, if it’s boring, it might make you yawn. Or, maybe a class at school is boring. You’re sitting in
class…you want to sleep because you’re so bored. You are bored because the class is boring.

The class is so uninteresting that it makes you sleepy and you have a hard time to listen and
pay attention.

Okay, now I’m going to show you a couple of example sentences using our words “boring” and
“annoying.”

“I hate this song. It’s so annoying.”

“I don’t want to go out to eat with James. He’s really annoying.”

“I don’t like biology class. It’s kind of boring.”

“Sam decided not to go to the museum because he thought it would be boring.”

I hope that you enjoyed this video and that now you know this difference between boring and
annoying.

So, why don’t you go ahead and practice this?

Go ahead and make some comments and tell me what you think is boring or annoying.

And it will be a great way for you to reinforce
the lesson and remember the difference between “boring” and “annoying.”

Thanks for watching and I look forward to seeing your comments.

What is the difference between tiresome, wearisome, irksome, and humdrum?

Tiresome is a thing or person that is dull or boring, and that doesn’t show any fun.Tiresome thing is so boring that makes you feel fatigued.
Tiresome is more physical than mental.

Wearisome suggests extremely tiresome; It is so tiresome that can wear you down into a lethargic state.
Merriam-Webster says,»A person or, especially, a thing is wearisome that exhausts one’s strength or patience through long-continued or constant call for effort, exertion, or attention, or through tiresome uniformity or character.»

Irksome causes impatience; an angry customer that tests your patience can be known as irksome: an irksome task is one that you have to do despite the fact that you don’t have any interest in that either its process or its result. You would find it irksome to attend lectures by one whose delivery is tedious and whose subject matter is dull.
Irksome creates a mixture of bodily and mental pain.

Humdrum is like drumbeat that continues monotonously for a long time; the word thus means the automatic monotony(lack of variety) of routine. A humdrum thing is dull because of the persistent repetition. It lacks diversity, fun, and excitement.
Living in a room for a long time can be humdrum; a dish without
spice can be humdrum; drumbeat can be humdrum.

A tedious thing is colorless, unenliven, slow, and lengthy.
Tedious is more mental than physical. A long article full of heavy word come in category of tedious things. A lecture more than one hours become tedious.
Tedious is not used for a person.

Boring includes all the preceded words.

I know boring means uninteresting or dull, and annoying means irritating or bothering, for me they are totally different, so I was surprised to see «bore» being translated as «使厌烦»(which means annoying somebody) in most English-Chinese bilingual dictionaries(Oxford, Cambridge, Longman etc.).

I wonder if they are synonyms.

I think in posh British circles (especially in earlier centuries) to say someone is a bore means that they are annoying. If the book you’re reading refers to upper class British people then the translation you have is probably correct. However, in American English boring and annoying are two different ideas.

You can read the definitions of the two words and you may find, though they use different words to describe them, they seem to be talking about the same thing. One might lead to the other (as an inference), but that is not necessary and native speakers would not confuse these for each other. The primary difference is that:

  • ‘annoying’ is something that is actively bothering you. A loud noise, or something that keeps interrupting you.

  • ‘boring’ is something that is dull and lifeless, or at least seems so to you.

Both are things that you’d rather stop, but you wouldn’t mistake one for the other, and so you wouldn’t consider them synonyms. Of course something that is boring may well be annoying you (because it is so boring), but that doesn’t make the two concepts the same.

Note that even if the lists of synonyms for each overlap, that doesn’t guarantee that they are synonymous. (in mathematical terms, synonymy sounds like it should be an ‘equivalence relation’ but is not. ‘synonymy’ is more like ‘near’ rather than ‘equal to’.

I’ve been wondering about this for a very long time and it always trips me up: in English, «boring» and «annoying» are two very different characteristics. And yet they both very often seem to be translated by the same French word: «ennuyeux».

Something «boring» makes you fall asleep, or makes your mind wander — there’s nothing interesting about something that’s «boring».

Something «annoying» is almost the opposite — you become agitated and a bit angry, and you can’t think of anything else EXCEPT the thing that’s annoying you.

He is boring (because he talks on and on in a monotone and I want to fall asleep).
He is annoying (because he keeps tapping his fingers on the table and that makes me want to strangle him).

The documentary was boring — the birds never moved from their nest!
The documentary was annoying — the camera was shaky, and there was lots of unpleasant screeching from the birds that gave me a headache.

Are there two different adjectives in French that allow one to distinguish between these two traits, without having to resort to expressions or imagery like «taper sur les nerfs» or «il m’a endormi»? Perhaps the answer is «No», and that’s fine :)

Merci!
