Hi!
I’m trying to look for a word for the quality of being well-known. It should be neutral without any inherent positive or negative connotations or denotations. So far, the words I’ve come up with Fame, Renown, Popularity and Notoriety.
Unfortunately, the first three have a strongly positive meaning (i.e Fame even has the complementary ‘Infamy’).
Notoriety was originally neutral, but gained the negative connotation due to usage; this would eventually color the actual denotation of the word, to the point that it has an inherently negative meaning nowadays. Funnily, people now use the term notoriety or notorious in a more neutral way as a form of irony—but this doesn’t change the fact that the proper use of the word has a negative flavor.
Does anyone have any ideas on such a word?

Hi. How about ‘recognition’? Could you use it in your sentence? Example: Her work received recognition by the general public?

«Well-known» or «widely known» seem neutral to me, Katylar, and I’d use them if I needed something neutral with this meaning.
As you noted, «renowned», «popular», «famous», and «notorious» are not neutral.
cross-posted with colognial.

Hmm. Could be usable. Basically, I’m making a list of the attributes/characteristics each presidential candidate has. So everything from ‘Educational Attainment’ to ‘Gender’ to ‘Height’, then ‘Fame/Recognition/Notoriety’. So Recognition might not work.

Hi Owlman5, unfortunately ‘Well-known’ works as an adjective, and I need a noun. Something like ‘Well-known-ness’.

‘Notableness’ might work. Recognizability. ‘ Recognizableness’ is in some dictionaries.
Some say «He has name recognition.» That’s a noun.

#8
Maybe: household term/name

If you need a neutral noun, then I like Benny’s ‘recognizability’.

I’m looking for a word which describes how well known something is.
An example of the scale I am looking for is :
- Common
- Notable
- Well-Known
- Famous
I’ve tried the Thesaurus, but with no luck this time.
To add a little more context
The word will be used to describe a scale of how well known a person is between factions, The other scale which is used is Standings (Enemy, Unfriendly, Neutral, Friendly, Ally).
So if standing could be displayed on the X-axis then Y axis would be the word which I am looking for.

I would go with «Familiarity», especially the 1.1 definition:
Familiarity
NOUN
1 Close acquaintance with or knowledge of something.
‘increase customer familiarity with a product’
1.1 The quality of being well known; recognizability based on long or close association.
‘the reassuring familiarity of his parents’ home’
One could certainly have degrees of familiarity.

Popularity works well as a name for your scale:
Popularity (Oxford)
The state or condition of being liked, admired, or supported by many
people. ‘he was at the height of his popularity’
Notice the example includes the phrase: ‘at the height of his popularity’, popularity is something that can be thought of in degrees, so fits the idea of being measured on a scale of some sort. You are not simply unpopular or popular, but you can be popular to varying degrees, for example mapping onto the terms in your question: —
Common — not particularly popular
Notable — somewhat popular
Well known — popular
Famous — at the height of popularity
