Hello. I would like to express that I don’t want to let something in my work pile up and that’s why I keep getting rid of it «as I go along» (in the course of time while I do my main job, so that I don’t have to do it all at once at the end of my shift).
Is there an English word (adverb) to describe this? My dictionary only says «as you go along» and «on the fly», whereas the second one doesn’t sound right in this context to me. The only adverb that crossed my mind is «gradually», but that implies that it’s done slowly, over a (long) period of time, unhurriedly, not that it’s done during the course of something else.
Thank you in advance for your help.
-
#2
You could use «progressively». Which could imply that you are doing it over time.
-
#3
No, I don’t think «progressively» says what Dunno has in mind.
How about: I handle each task as it comes along; I don’t put anything off.
-
#4
Like Parla says, «as they come along» or «as they come up».
«I handle tasks as they come up.»
-
#5
I don’t think anything of what you suggested fits in my context. I’m not trying to imply that I do it as soon as it comes up without putting it off, I’m trying to imply that during my main duty (in the course of time) I try to make time for doing something else as well.
The closest expressions in English seem to be «as I go along» or «in the course of time».
Let me change the context a little bit:
You are a mechanic and have two cars that you are about to repair. The owner of car A asks you which one you are working on. You say: I’m sorry, I have to finish car B first (by tomorrow), but I will [untranslatable?] have a look at your car too, so I might be able to tell you what’s wrong with it and how much it will cost by tonight.
-
#6
No one knows? Would you use one of the expressions I mentioned above instead?
-
#7
Let me change the context a little bit:
You are a mechanic and have two cars that you are about to repair. The owner of car A asks you which one you are working on. You say: «I’m sorry, I have to finish car B first (by tomorrow), but I will have a look at your car too, so I might be able to tell you what’s wrong with it and how much it will cost by tonight.»
This is indeed a different situation. Now, what is your question?

Without that untranslatable word it could mean that he will have a look at his car just once at some point of time. I want to stress that he will work on his car too, throughout his shift in the course of time, if that makes sense. Now that I read that sentence again, there’s so much context now that it makes sense without adding anything else.
So let’s say that he would want to say something like:
I will work on both cars as I go along.
I will work on both cars in the course of time.
I will gradually work on both cars as time goes by.
My question is: What’s the most natural way of expressing this? (Would you use one of my examples or say it differently?)

Maybe:
I’ll be working on both cars over the next couple of days.

None of these is quite right, as I understand. They suggest equality. Rather: I’m working on this car, but
as I go along, I’ll have time to start on yours.
So: I’m working on this car, but not every moment; as time permits (or ‘as convenient) I’ll have a look at yours and perhaps start work on it.
I’m mostly working on this car, but periodically, I’ll have time, I hope, to start on yours.

I’m trying to imply that during my main duty (in the course of time) I try to make time for doing something else as well.
Going back to your original context, I think the expression you mention above, «try to make time for», is workable. It would imply that the activity is not your main activity but that you nevertheless spend time with it.
Here are a few usage examples featuring the phrase:

Thank you for your answers. I think «periodically» (as bennymix mentioned) could be the word I was looking for.
«I don’t want to let it pile up and that’s why I periodically keep getting rid of it.»
«I will periodically have a look at your car too.»
«I work periodically on both cars.»
Seems to make sense, or doesn’t it?

I’m afraid none of these make sense in English. Does the suggestion in post #9 not express your thought?

These require a bit more work, Dunno. Remember the model sentence I gave you:
I’m mostly working on this car, but periodically, I’ll have time, I hope, to start on yours.
Let’s take your second sentence:
«I will periodically have a look at your car too.» {a bit obscure}
Revised: This afternoon, I’m working on Mr. Jones’ car, but periodically I’ll work on yours, when I have a chance.
Your first sentence:
«I don’t want to let it pile up and that’s why I periodically keep getting rid of it.»
{some usage problems around ‘get rid of’}
Revised: I don’t want to let correspondence pile up; that’s why, periodically, I work to get rid of it.

Parla: It does, thank you.
bennymix: Thank you for correcting my sentences, I really appreciate your help. Now I understand how that word works.
