How to use this ‘Animals, Plants, & Environment’ Study Set
Importantly, you want to practice memorizing definitions for these words. Also, you also need to practice spelling them. This is because to get a high IELTS Listening score or IELTS and TOEFL writing score, you may need to know how to spell academic vocabulary like these from the Study Set.
Memorize New Words with Vocabulary ‘Flashcards’
One of the most effective and traditional ways to memorize new vocabulary is to use flashcards. A flashcard is a small thick-paper card (3 inches by 5 inches, or 8 cm by 12 cm). On front side you write down a word or concept you want to remember, and on the back side you write down its definition. On the back you can also add other information, such as examples of the concept, other words that are related to the concept, common collocations that include the word (a ‘collocation’ is a group of words that often used together, such as ‘heavy rain’ or ‘computer network’).
Some students will also add images or drawings on the flashcard to remind themselves of word definitions!
You can do two different memorization activities with flashcards:
- Look at the word on the front of the flashcard and try to remember its definition.
- Look at the definition on the back of the flashcard and try to remember the word on the front of the card–you can even try to write the word to practice spelling it!
Keep these flashcards with you throughout the day. Pull them out and study them when you are standing in line at the store or sitting on the bus. Have them on the table next to you while you are at lunch and look at them while you are eating.
