Word for a small person

  • #1

Greetings! I searched the forums for past threads but was surprised not to find any that addressed this topic.

I’m looking for

affectionate

and/or

humorous

(but not extremely offensive!) nicknames in English to

call a short person

, for instance the type of names that can be acceptable among siblings and/or close friends.

I’m not looking for definitions (e.g. knee-high to a grasshopper, challenged in height, etc), but actual names you can call a short person in an affectionate, jocular way. (in case you wonder, I am the short person involved)

Words like «midget«, «dwarf» are inappropriate.

I found the term «shorty» which is described as a term of endearment, or at least jocular. I wonder if there are more like «shorty», maybe a little more expressive (in other languages there are some real cute and expressive words… along the line of «small-mushroom», «ounce-of-cheese», etc)

What about «shrimp«? Is it supposed to be as offensive as midget? Or is it on the same level as shorty?

I also found the term pip-squeak somewhere, but I am not sure about its connotations.

If you can clarify the connotations of these terms or suggest more, please let me know. :) Thanks!

All of these are pejorative. If you’re searching for a word — and I’m not sure you should be, which is probably why you haven’t found a forum thread — then you should consider what you would like to be called by someone who is looking down on your four-foot, nine-inch self.

We differ in our perspective… and I’m not talking about height. :p Haha.

    You said «looking down» — I said «affectionate and jocular». It could be a cultural thing.

Anyway, I know terms that fall into this definition in languages such as German and Italian, and provided examples. I’m just trying to figure out if something equivalent exists in English.

To get the best answer, you’ll need to clarify what you’re referring to, then.

I think it may be a cultural thing. In my experience, it is not considered appropriate to call attention to physical attributes that might be considered undesirable. The nicknames that do this are frowned on. Children are taught not to use them.

Thus, I don’t know of any nickname meaning «Shorty» that would generally be considered «affectionate» rather than belittling.

I said «We differ in our

    perspective

… and I’m not talking about

    height

    »

It was a joke. Forget it.

I made a joke because from your reply I got the impression that to you any reference to a person’s short height is a shame — as if being short was inherently negative. My point of view, instead, based also on experience in other languages, is that this is not necessarily the case. In some other languages there are terms for a short person that are only jocular and affectionate, not inherently offensive. I was curious to find out if the same is possible in English too.

No need to forget it… thanks for the clarification. I missed it. (Perhaps this is where I say it went over my head. :))

I’d say it largely depends on who you’re talking to, SF. I certainly wouldn’t go up to someone in the street and say, «Hey pipsqueak, can you tell me the way to the post office?»

But my partner (who’s about 1″ taller than me) regularly calls me Shorty, Shortarse, Evil Dwarf, Runt, Titch, etc.

In this country, a short person might not object to being called «titch» in an affectionate manner by a close friend or a sibling, particularly in an environment in which nicknames are often used, but I get the impression that the use of nicknames has been on the decline for decades.

Sound shift’s «Titch» was the first thing I thought of when I read your post, SF:).

    I love ewie’s «Evil Dwarf»!

The way Reverse Dictionary works is pretty simple. It simply looks through tonnes of dictionary definitions and grabs the ones that most closely match your search query. For example, if you type something like «longing for a time in the past», then the engine will return «nostalgia». The engine has indexed several million definitions so far, and at this stage it’s starting to give consistently good results (though it may return weird results sometimes). It acts a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search with a definition, rather than a single word. So in a sense, this tool is a «search engine for words», or a sentence to word converter.

I made this tool after working on Related Words which is a very similar tool, except it uses a bunch of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words to a search query. That project is closer to a thesaurus in the sense that it returns synonyms for a word (or short phrase) query, but it also returns many broadly related words that aren’t included in thesauri. So this project, Reverse Dictionary, is meant to go hand-in-hand with Related Words to act as a word-finding and brainstorming toolset. For those interested, I also developed Describing Words which helps you find adjectives and interesting descriptors for things (e.g. waves, sunsets, trees, etc.).

In case you didn’t notice, you can click on words in the search results and you’ll be presented with the definition of that word (if available). The definitions are sourced from the famous and open-source WordNet database, so a huge thanks to the many contributors for creating such an awesome free resource.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: Elastic Search, @HubSpot, WordNet, and @mongodb.
