Word for a collection of writings

I’m looking for a single word to describe the collection of all letters, scriptures and books specific to a religion, something like teachings but with a stronger emphasis on the written aspect.

You might consider using canon: Theravada canon, Mahayana canon.

They’re usually just called the Sacred texts, but I guess you know that. Still, given that they are called that, most likely anything else suggested won’t actually be what people usually call them.

Having said that, Jasper Loy’s canon can be used quite specifically in this sense (along with a lot of other senses). But not everyone would understand it, I suggest.

Are you a collector of things? I am a collector of words. I have word clouds and sticky notes and little tabs on my computer dedicated to various word collections that I use on a daily basis.

Why am I telling you this?

Because word collections are a tool you can use to help your writing build itself!

How?

Glad you asked!

My own particular word collections help me with a number of things:

  1. They make your writing less stagnant. With our own personal vocabularies, we tend to use the same words over and over. Word collections help you gather different words to bring more variety to your writing. This is especially true if you’re writing for an industry that you’re not as familiar with. For example, recently I was writing copy for a boudoir photographer, and before I wrote anything, I started collecting sexy words, coy words, and photo-related words. That way, I avoided overusing certain phrases and made the writing more provocative (
  1. They help build titles and descriptions. You know those little descriptions under items featured in magazines? As a writer, they always light me up. They’re so perfectly descriptive! Disclaimer: I steal from them prolifically. Many of the words on my “color” word collection came from magazines: “shock of color” or “luxe metallics,” for example. Then, when I need to write my own descriptions or titles, I have a collection of words to draw from.
  1. They spark content inspiration: I have one particular word collection for nature writing. I love nature words because the words themselves are so soothing. Sometimes, all I have to do is look at my nature words and they can spark a new content angle for a blog post. For example, I’m looking at the word “habitat” and it immediately sparks a business blog post idea: “How to Create the Perfect Home Habitat for Productivity.”
  1. They solidify your brand. Perhaps you have a collection of adjectives you use to describe your brand or your ideal customer. Creating a brand word collection for your content writers gives them a compass to guide their writing. If there’s a certain feeling you want your readers to come away with or a certain picture you want to create in their minds, a brand word collection will help your writers incorporate that into their writing.

So, how do you start your own word collection?

Open a fresh document on your computer or get out a piece of paper. I suggest keeping your word collections in a place that you can reference easily, so keep it pinned to your desk or pasted in a tab on your home screen.

Ok, let’s start with your particular niche. I’m guessing you’ve probably started one type of word collection already, in the form of your SEO keywords. Variations of those words are a great starting point for your word collection. Brainstorm and write them all down.

Start with synonyms of your keywords. Hop onto an online thesaurus and look up actual synonyms.

Next, grab a trade magazine or click over to a blog that’s popular in your niche. Without reading the actual content for meaning, pull out the most powerful words and phrases (three words or fewer) you find that pertain to your subject or niche.

For example, if I’m writing about nature subjects, I might pick out words like untouched, air detox, pristine, excavate, lifeblood, and wholesome from a natural living magazine. If I’m looking for travel words in a travel guide, I might lift phrases like “elaborate vistas” and “rare hideaways.”

Once you get a good list going, try to organize them in a meaningful way. You may have one column for “environment” words and one column for “thriving” words. My own fitness word collection is divided by body part, body type, workout words, etc. Categorizing your words will make your list easier to reference later.

The words you choose should capture the vibe and essence of what you’re writing about or how you want your brand picture to look.

I encourage you to use words that you don’t typically use in your own vocabulary but fit perfectly with the subjects your write about, to keep it fresh. It’s a brand lexicon-building tool!

Going forward, as you do your day-to-day reading, start paying attention to how things are described.

Whenever words and descriptions stand out to you, don’t ever plagiarize, but grab the adjectives and small phrases that really capture what you’re always trying to express in your own copy.

For my fitness writing business, whenever I’m reading through my fitness magazines, I like to circle words that describe exercise, working hard, or getting sweat, in new ways. When creating new workouts or writing a sales page for a fitness program, all I have to do is pull phrases and juicy powerful words from that collection to build my copy.

Cool, huh?

More fun than a stamp collection if you ask me.

By creating word collections, you’ll have a wonderful resource to reach into when you’re stuck or you don’t know where to take your copy next.

I’d love to hear about any word collections you come up with. Drop me a comment her or on my blog. I love seeing them!
