How to use this teaching resource
- PLEASE NOTE: We have made these quite big (4 to an A4 page) so that you can choose to keep them this way or just adjust your printer settings to print 2 or more to a page – the smaller sizes are ideal for at desk work – the larger sizes are great for display and desk work….
- Print and Laminate to make up wall charts to use for, reading and writing reference
- Make up laminated sets of smaller sized words with the missing letters – use these sets for children to fill in the missing letters using whiteboard markers – just focus on certain short vowel sets, or throw all the sets together for follow-up reinforcement and practice – great as a literacy group activity
- Another variation of above idea is children copy the laminated words – include the missing letters and draw a picture in their literacy books.
- Laminate the pictures and cut them up for rhyme sort games and activities, match them with the plain word cards – play ‘concentration’ with the pictures and the plain word cards. Give each child a word card and a picture and they have to find their matching partners.
- Sort the cards and pictures according to exact word family, or word family vowel eg.. all ‘ust’ words, or all ‘u’ words
- Children use the printable alphabet letter tiles to make up and glue together the word family words.
- Make up customised phonics flip charts to match each word family – make these words on your flip charts..
- Laminate and cut the pictures off the cards using a ‘puzzle’ cut – children match words to pictures.
- Laminate and cut off the word family endings using ‘puzzle’ cuts – children then match the pieces to ‘re-make’ the words..
- Children classify mixed up word cards into word family categories.
- Pop the PDF files up on your IWB and children write in the missing letters.
- Use the activities from ‘101 Ways to Use Word Cards / Flashcards‘ with these words…eg. how many times can you find these words in books around the room etc…..

Learning Objectives: Built around words with the short vowel ‘a’, these phonics games will help children review and practice many three-letter word families or word patterns. Word families are a group of words that have a similar sound and writing pattern. They often rhyme and are perfect for teaching together.
Words with the following common word patterns will be reviewed in this game:
- ‘ack’ word family: back, black, sack, crack etc.
- ‘alf’ word family: half, calf etc.
- ‘and’ word family: hand, sand, band etc.
- ‘ank’ word family: sank, bank, rank, shrank, thank etc.
- ‘ant’ word family: ant, pant, rant etc.
- ‘ash’ word family: rash, splash, lash, smash etc.
- ‘ast’ word family: cast, last, mast, fast etc.
Most of these word families are formed using a combination of the short ‘a’ with ending digraphs and blends. A good mastery of word patterns makes it easy for children to read and spell unfamiliar words. It is a great early literacy skill to have. The game involves a lot of listening and spelling. Children are expected to listen carefully to avoid being tricked. Start by choosing from the three game designs. The goal of this phonics game is to navigate a treacherous terrain filled with pirates, crocodiles and space monsters. It is all about luck! Choose to play with a friend in team mode of by yourself in single mode. You will need luck to avoid being eaten by a monster and have your game restarted.
Short
Vowel a
Short Vowel «a» Lesson Series: In the «Phonics Short
Vowel a Lesson Series (7 Lessons)» we will be studying three letter
rhyming words, with the pattern, «Consonant-Vowel-Consonant.» These
can be classified into the following word families:
-at word family
-an word family
-ad word family
-ap word family
-ag word family
-am word family
-ab word family
Phonetic Skills (Spatial): Kids sometimes can pronounce the sound of
the individual letters, but usually, have a hard time, in connecting the three
sounds to form a word. Use CVC words with short a such as cat, bat, hat, man,
ran, dad, lad, dam, ram, cap, cab and fan to teach blending of sounds with help of flashcards. In all the phonics videos, we have included the spatial
movement of letters to form a word. This helps in visual stimulation and proper
understanding of blending of sounds. The lessons also include three letters
blending, as well as sentence writing.
Short Vowels: These are the first set of sounds
introduced to students in phonics classes. These are generally introduced
before the long vowel sounds are taught.
Rule: Usually when a vowel (a,e, i,o, or u)
is present in the beginning (VC words) or between two consonants (CVC words) in
a word that contains only one vowel, this vowel often makes the short vowel
sound. Example: an, at, can, dad, rat, fan, cab, scab, flap, nap, black, snack,
rack, etc. Exceptions are always there. The above rule is applicable to the
three letter rhyming words formed by the short vowels and represented as word
families.
Short Vowel a Pronunciation: To say this sound, lower your jaw and open
your mouth widely, with the tip of your tongue touching the bottom of your
front teeth. It is something, like a sound you would take out when seen a scary
thing, such as /ă/, as in
alligator!
Three Steps to teach Short Vowel a Word Families:
1. Play the activity demonstrated below for each word family
2. Show the video corresponding to the word family, (Link is given below).
3. Download and print free worksheets in which kids can color the picture
and write the thee letter rhyming CVC words.
