The Document Inspector found one or more embedded files (such as an Office or text document) or embedded objects (such as a chart or an equation) that may have data that isn’t visible in your document.

For example, you may have embedded an Excel chart in your PowerPoint presentation that has underlying data you can only view in Excel. Or there may be some cached data behind that chart that’s not visible either.

Issue

The Document Inspector can’t remove these files or objects for you, because these items may be an important part of your document. For example, if you’ve inserted an Excel chart in your PowerPoint presentation, you may wish to replace it with a copy of the chart image, rather than removing the item.

Recommended solution

  1. Close the Document Inspector.

  2. Determine the appropriate way to resolve the issue. For example, if you have an embedded Excel chart and you want to keep the chart but remove any hidden data, you can convert the chart to a picture.

    Here’s how:

    1. Select the chart area and press Ctrl+C.

    2. Select the location where you want to paste a picture of the chart, press Ctrl+Alt+V, and pick a Picture format.

Picture options in the Paste Special dialog box

    3. Select the original embedded chart and press Delete.

  3. To simply remove an embedded file or object, select it and press Delete.

  4. To verify the issue is resolved, click File > Info > Check for Issues, and click Inspect Document.

More about embedded objects

The Document Inspector detects OLE Objects or packages that have been inserted from the Object dialog box (click Insert > Object in your Office application), or by using copy and paste commands.

Insert Object dialog box

Here are examples of some object types:

  • Bitmap image objects

  • Microsoft Equation 3.0 objects

  • Microsoft Graph Chart objects

  • Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation objects

  • Microsoft Visio Drawing objects

  • Microsoft Word Document objects

  • OpenDocument Text objects

  • I am running Word 2013 64-bit as part of an Office 365 ProPlus install. I am unable to open any embedded .docx files. Double clicking launches the message «The server application, source file, or item cannot be found.» Single clicking displays
the message «Double-click to edit Unknown».

I can open other embedded file types: doc, xls, xlsm. Embedded Outlook email files will open, but now display as OLE objects. Also the icon for embedded files now usually appears as the ‘box with contents’.

Opening files directly in Word works correctly, the problem is limited to opening embedded docx files.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated…thanks. -JAmsUser

Do the other people have access to file’s location?  Embedding link to file?

Yes. It seems that simply the icon is not showing for this person. I’m able to right click on the text and go to «Document Object» in the dropdown and open it there. Odd. I just tried inserting my own embedded documents, show icon setting is selected, but it still doesn’t show it. Accessible still. Maybe she’ll be ok with this as a workaround treatment for a while.

So far, I’ve noticed the Canvas user can be logged into office 365 in another tab of the same browser and, while viewing the open embedded document through WordOnline in that tab, the Canvas page in the other tab will show the document embedded.  I’ve gone through a number of variations/scenarios with multiple browsers and doing things such as copying and pasting a link to the document shared to all into the iframe html originally created, and other extraneous things most of faculty wouldn’t be open to doing, to no avail…

Do you think folk in an institution with higher permissions to it’s office 365 have the capacity to change a permission to allow embedded content to show outside of their «instance»(?) of office 365?  This backwardness seems to dovetail with the Microsoft mental model.  <joke>Should we just be happy we can use office 365 outside of Internet Explorer? </joke>
