Word combinations at the seaside

Mrs.
Hilton:
It’s much fresher here than in London.

Mr.
Hilton:
Yes, it was so stuffy in the train with the car-

riage so
crowded, I hate trains and buses.

Mrs.
Hilton:
It’s all over now. Look? Alice and Roger have

gone further
along. They’ve chosen a nice place.

Mr.
Hilton:
Yes, there are fewer people there.

Mrs.
Hilton:
How quick the young people are! They are

already in their
bathing-suits lying in the sun.

Alice:
Isn’t the water cold?

Roger:
It is, and you are certainly afraid to come into the

water, you
coward.

Mrs.
Hilton:
Stop teasing your sister, Roger. I am sick and

tired of your
quarrels. Let me have a minute’s rest.

Roger:
Sorry, Mum. I’ll be as good as gold. Wait for me,

Alice, I’m
coming too.

Alice:
Quick! I’m already in the water.

Roger:
I’ll catch up with you easily. You splash about too

much with
your feet.

Alice:
I’m not such a strong swimmer as you. Oh, I’ve got

a mouthful cf
salt water.

Roger:
You shouldn’t swim with your mouth open.

Alice:
I feel a bit chilly. ‘I’d
rather swim ashore and lie on

the sand.

Roger:
I’ll join you in a moment after I dive off that raft. .

  1. Explaining new grammar material and doing exercises.

The present perfect is formed from the present tense of the verb have and the past participle of a verb. We use the present perfect tense:

  • for something that started in the past and continues in the present:

They’ve been married for nearly fifty years.
She has lived in Liverpool all her life.

Note: We normally use the present perfect continuous for this:

She has been living in Liverpool all her life.
It’s been raining for hours.

  •  for something we have done several times in the past and continue to do:

I’ve played the guitar ever since I was a teenager.
He has written three books and he is working on another one.
I’ve been watching that programme every week.

We often use a clause with since to show when something started in the past:

They’ve been staying with us since last week.
have worked here since I left school.
I’ve been watching that programme every week since it started.

  • when we are talking about our experience up to the present:

Note: We often use the adverb ever to talk about experience up to the present:

My last birthday was the worst day I have ever had.

Note: and we use never for the negative form:

Have you ever met George?
Yes, but I’ve never met his wife.

  • for something that happened in the past but is important at the time of speaking:

I can’t get in the house. I’ve lost my keys.
Teresa isn’t at home. I think she has gone shopping.
I’m tired out. I’ve been working all day.

WARNING:

We do not use the present perfect with an adverbial which refers to past time which is finished:

I have seen that film yesterday.
We have just bought a new car last week.
When we were children we have been to California.

But we can use it to refer to a time which is not yet finished:

Have you seen Helen today?
We have bought a new car this week

Exercise. Write a suitable sentence using the PRESENT PERFECT TENSE :

  1. Ann’s hair was dirty. Now it’s clean. (wash).  Ann has washed her hair
  2. Tom was 80 kg. Now he’s 70. (lose weight)
  3. Bill played football yesterday. Now he can’t walk; his leg is in plaster. (break)
  4. My sister is looking for her pen. (lose)
  5. Mary is on holiday in France. (go)
  6. Mr. Hill was in Canada last week. He’s back in London now. (be)
  7. Look! Mrs. Smith has got a lot of packages. (buy)
  8. I can’t eat anything now. (eat too much)
  9. Mrs. Jenkins is very tired. (clean / house)
  10. Tony needs a holiday. (work / hard / this year)

  1. Home task. Your home task is to write an essay “My summer holidays at the seaside” (Introduction, body, conclusion)
  1.  Conclusion. I gave you merry and sad smiles. Tell me, please, what is your mood now? Show me the sad or the merry smile. Your marks are: … Thank you for your active participation, your bright and original ideas. I am pleased with your today’s work. The lesson is over. Good – bye.
