Ready-made cards in English

A set of cards with irregular verbs.

Conclusion

Is the implementation and use of cards effective in order to? Rather, here the place will have a positive answer. This method provides an excellent reason not only to start using the colloquial vocabulary of another country, but also to continue your studies at any stage. This conclusion was formed on the basis of only positive factors influencing their use.

In the classroom lesson with cards are held that children love, such as crocodile or mafia. Such games develop the speaking skills of schoolchildren. Also, the teacher can come up with other tasks, for example, in the form of a board game.

There are practically no negative factors. You can buy them in every second-hand bookstore, make them yourself, just download them to your computer (phone or tablet). It is possible to study in your free time. These are the main tasks of the cards.

So that the process of teaching English does not become boring, dry, uninteresting and even boring, it is necessary to try to diversify it in every possible way. This can be done in various ways: alternate activities, include games for learning English, attract guests (preferably), watch audio and video materials, etc. And sometimes it is enough just to use a variety of handouts for learning English in the lesson.

pay attention to English flashcards, since they not only make the work of the English teacher easier, but also help the student to cope with the task.

When we talk about flashcards in English, sets with some images come to mind first.

As a rule, these collections of cards in English are several dozen or even hundreds of small-format images, on the back of which there is a translation of the word and its transcription (the latter is optional).

What are the English flashcards for? First, they develop memory well, because illustration forms a strong connection between the word and the visual image. Secondly, they practice the pronunciation of the English language, since with the help of transcription we fix the correct sound of the word. Thirdly, when working with flashcards in English, attention is trained. And the result of all this can be called a high-quality replenishment.

I call cards in English not only words with pictures, but also tasks-cards on which certain test exercises are placed. Such cards can be used for collective, individual or differentiated work with students, which is not only very convenient, but also allows you to find an approach to everyone’s knowledge.

Where can I find flashcards in English?

English language cards are a demonstration material, so it is advisable to purchase it ready-made in a specialized store. You can also use electronic versions of cards in English, which can be downloaded without problems, but then you have to make an effort to bring them to their proper form using a printout. If you nevertheless decide to search for these cards on the net, go to the site.

Check out entry-level theme cards. They are represented by 12 main conversational topics ranging from and ending. These are standard flashcards for English with a picture on one side, a word and transcription on the other. If you are teaching children aged five and over, the My First English Words flashcards will help you. The necessary words for memorization are presented on 300 copies in a convenient format.

There are also business cards in English. In 10 thematic blocks, all words and expressions also contain examples of their use and translation into Russian. Do not go around and cards to consolidate lexical and grammatical material. These are cards with a group of tasks that you can use to help you test your English proficiency.

You can play with cards in English (by the way, also a useful activity), arrange, guess and guess riddles, in a word, use them in different ways in your work. The main thing is to turn learning English into a fun and educational process.

Flashcards for learning and memorizing English words

как учить английский по карточкам

Flashcards with English words help in a short time to gain the necessary vocabulary or phrasal stock. You can take ordinary pieces of paper or stickers, but they quickly wrinkle and wear out, so it is better to buy special thin cardboard or thick paper from office supplies. On one side of the card, write down a word or phrase in English, on the other — transcription and Russian translation.

learning to greet in English

How to quickly learn many words in English? The cards can be divided into several piles according to various criteria: subject (nature, cuisine, animals, numbers), category (verb, pronoun, adjective), abstract concepts (pain, surprise, fun), etiquette phrases (hello, how are you) grammar and etc. Each portion contains 20-50 copies, depending on the complexity.

A card is taken from the pack, a word or expression is read and pronounced according to the transcription, the translation is pronounced. If the word is easy to pronounce, then postpone it, but if difficulties arise at any stage, then put it down the pile to repeat it again. Review and repeat the phrases until the kippah ends, until you can pronounce all the words correctly.

Memorization technique using flashcards

No need to mix packs with each other! After you repeat the whole group of lexemes and speech, they need to be forgotten, no matter how paradoxical it sounds. Set the stack aside for a while to pause. Later I will explain the essence of this English learning technique. You can also use this option with translation and transcription on the outside:

English words on cards

Every other day, a group of words and phrases can be repeated, then after 3 days, 5, 7, 10, 14 days. As a rule, after two weeks, almost all words are memorized. Then turn the cards over and go through the pack in the reverse order: look at the Russian phrase and try to remember its English counterpart, with the same frequency of 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14 days.

Then it is worth taking a break for a longer time — 3 weeks, a month. After this period, once again go all the way according to the shortened scheme — 1, 5, 10 days. The process, of course, is lengthy, but very effective. In my experience, and in the opinion of other adherents of this technique, 99% of the structures studied are remembered.

If things are going really badly from the start, take a little delay, increase the number of repetitions and decrease the period between them. Try to practice on the scheme 1, 1, 3, 3, 5, 5 days. But you should not get carried away with this. The breaks and pauses between reps are the most important condition for this technique. Now let’s dwell on it in more detail.

How does all this work?

It is known that at least two types of memory are involved in language learning — long-term and short-term. The meaning of pauses is to ensure the transition of the studied information from short-term to long-term memory. Speaking a stack, the brain stores information in temporary memory, which is cleared during a break and transferred to other levels.

learning English by flashcards

When the pack is spoken again, the brain suddenly realizes that it has thrown these things in vain and begins to slowly write them into long-term memory. A break is needed in order to deceive the head, which does not want to remember all this incomprehensible foreign garbage, on the one hand, and to facilitate the work of the brain on the other.

Speaking in both Russian and English is important as it trains automatic muscle memory. You see the text — the lips speak the translation automatically. In addition, reading the transcription aloud, the ear gets used to the sound of foreign speech, begins to recognize it when learning English, and the brain automatically remembers the phrase.

Where to get words?

There are special manuals with ready-made classified cards. There are even sites where you can take them and print or create your own. The main source of material is radio and television. In oral speech, those expressions are used that are really needed for full mastery of the language.

Another source is books. Here, important words are encountered even more often. Listen carefully to the radio or read a book. When you hear an incomprehensible word or expression, write it out, translate it and add it to a new transcription card for even faster learning English.

If with video, audio or books — a completely dark forest, then take the most common topics in the dictionary or stupid words from the textbook. During the study, I found out for myself that the key to the language is verbs, and only then articles and prepositions (of course, after studying popular nouns). Therefore, I put special emphasis on cards with all faces, tenses and verb conjugations.

Flashcards are the best option for beginners. Due to their extreme compactness, you can learn new words wherever it is convenient for you in short breaks of 10-15 minutes. And thanks to the special technique of breaks, the result will be very effective. See also How to learn English using pictures.

How to learn words and expressions. Cards

как учить английский по карточкам

Quick Teacher (1st Vocabulary)

The control cards contain 2500 of the most common words (combinations) with phonetic transcriptions to them, examples from «Spoken Speech» and translation on the reverse side.

These checklists will help you effortlessly learn all the vocabulary of the 1st vocabulary of the study guide in a very short time and begin to freely read and understand the text from the «Spoken Speech», as well as easily study the attached grammar.

This proven «card» method is successfully used by many foreign language polyglots and teachers in intensive language courses and other disciplines.

These cards are convenient in that each (!) Memorized word is given a full international phonetic transcription with stress, which will help you practice pronunciation from the very first days, and also examples of the use of the word in sentences are given, even if there are no such examples in the «Spoken language «. Additional examples are indicated with an asterisk (*).

With the help of these control cards, you will be able to use, in addition to visual and auditory perception of words, the so-called “hand memory” effect, when, while looking through the cards, you will involuntarily increase your speed when looking at familiar words and hold your attention when unfamiliar and not yet learned ones appear.

Understanding what now has to be remembered and reproduced connects conscious and unconscious attention, so memorization is more effective.

Looking through a pile of 50-60 cards every day for 10-20 minutes, you can easily transfer all memorized words from passive possession to working memory, that is, you will understand the meaning of a word immediately when you look at it, even out of context.

You need to work with the cards as follows: after the next 20-30 cards are printed and cut, you should mix them randomly, take any of them, look at a foreign word and try to remember its meaning. If you remember, then the card with this word can be put aside (a stack of learned words) and not work with it for now.

If you don’t know the translation of a word, then you should look at the back side of the card with the Russian translation, pronounce this word out loud in a foreign language (very important!) reproduce a given object independently or as a result of external influence: movement, push, fall, impact, etc.) and kinesthetic (what the given object feels like). In other words, it is required, through an independently constructed mental representation, to activate all of its leading channels of perception, linking them with the writing and pronunciation of a specific word in a foreign language. After that, immediately without delay, go to work with the next word.

If this word is an adjective, then it must be attached to some noun. For example, looking at the adjective «Good» — Imagine a nice day, a wonderful movie, a car of a prestigious brand. Use your imagination to represent abstract nouns.

For example, the «Morning» can be imagined as an alarm clock ringing in the morning or suddenly playing the morning radio with an invitation to exercise. Memorize verbs with a mental representation of a specific action. Try to get the most out of your mental images.

If you think not in words, but in images, the effectiveness of memorization increases tenfold. With each new lesson, the visual images in your mind will become more and more vivid and clear, appear and disappear like frames in a color film.

At the same time, against the background of the visual image you have created, you must each time present a printed foreign word, as if you are looking at a picture on which the artist has written its name in a foreign language in large block letters. Place the title in the center of the imaginary picture.

When working with flashcards (!), Do not try to memorize the word translation of a word, you only need it to familiarize yourself with the meaning of an unknown word. After that, you need to link the spelling and pronunciation of a foreign word as closely as possible with the image that you directly create.

If at the same time you also pronounce out loud a sentence with the use of this word in a foreign language and represent this action figuratively, then you will begin to form a new speech center of a foreign language (functioning independently of the center of the native language).

Usually, a new speech center of a foreign language is formed within 100-150 hours of total, active speaking and listening in a foreign language.

Those words that are difficult or impossible to imagine must be memorized by repeatedly pronouncing them as part of phrases, relying on more well-known images.

The speed of viewing cards as you memorize you need to increase. As soon as you feel that you have memorized a word and phrase well enough, put the card with the learned word in the pile of learned words and replenish the pile with the newly cut cards.

It is very important to periodically return to the words already learned and work with them more meaningfully. You need to look through the words and try to build a phrase for them that is different from the given phrase for the word below, using the newly learned words for this.

It can be an interrogative construction or, on the contrary, an answer to a question, a change in number or person. With the accumulation of vocabulary, this work will be done more and more easily and naturally. By constantly working with flashcards every day, you will be able to choose the most optimal mode of repetition and replenishment of your vocabulary for yourself.

Practice shows that the use of the card system allows a person to memorize about 1200 new foreign words every month with a minimum of time.

Once again, you should draw your attention:

  1.     Don’t try to memorize the word translation. After reading the translation of a word, imagine vividly IMAGE ONLY, which should arise in connection with the meaning of the word. Don’t focus your attention IN RUSSIAN PRONUNCIATION OF THE WORD;
  2.     In the process of your imagination, constantly pronounce a foreign word;
  3.     In the process of imagination, interrupting for moments, recall the letter designation of the written word on the image of the image, or from time to time glancing at the word written on the card (constantly presenting the corresponding image) pronounce a foreign word.

For greater convenience and better preservation of the card, it is better to print on paper with a density of 120-160 g / m.

How to learn English words using flashcards

«How to learn English words?» — this question is often asked by beginners, because learning a language at the initial stage means 70 percent replenishment of vocabulary, 20 percent learning grammar and only 10 percent reading and listening.

I mean the stage when your vocabulary is still insufficient even to read simple texts. I consider this stage the most difficult — then it only gets easier. Later, learning words becomes no longer so important: after typing a certain minimum of words and mastering the basics of grammar, it is better to replenish your vocabulary by reading and listening to interesting materials in English: news, fiction, films, TV shows — the choice is huge!

However, at the initial stage, memorizing words is still a problem, ordinary double-sided cards help to cope with it perfectly. When I first started learning English, I did not have a computer, gadgets, the Internet, and I learned words with the help of cardboard cards — they helped a lot to lay the foundation of my vocabulary. Below is an excerpt from my book, How to Learn English, in which I share my approach to memorizing words using flashcards.

Note that this approach can be used not only with cardboard cards, but also with some flashcard-based vocabulary programs like Quizlet.

So, before you a list of 30 words — nouns on the topic «Nature». You should not memorize it from scratch. It is much more efficient to use cards. Memorizing words with flashcards is not a new way, it has established itself as a convenient and effective, many teaching computer programs for learning languages use it in one form or another.

There are different ways of working with cards, I suggest the most, in my opinion, simple and at the same time effective. I will analyze it using the example of ordinary cardboard cards, we will talk about electronic cards (special training programs) a little later.

Usually words are taught in two stages: first, they teach in the direction from English to Russian, then vice versa. I also did this at first, but through trial and error I came to the conclusion that this was not enough.

So, using the cards, words are memorized in four stages:

  1. Memorization;
  2. Repetition (English — Russian);
  3. Repetition (Russian — English);
  4. Fastening.

1. Memorization of words

Take thirty cardboard cards the size of a credit card or any format convenient for you, write down the English word on one side, and the Russian translation on the other. If possible, write not single words, but words with minimal (one or two words) context.

Take out cards one by one from the deck, memorize the word and translation. Speak, if it’s more convenient, come up with short stories involving these words, connect them with associations. Memorize the cards in both directions, from Russian to English and vice versa. At this stage, there is no need to strive to memorize the words thoroughly, forever, we only have to put the words on the «hook». It is necessary that they be a little deposited in memory, and the main work will be done at the stages of repetition and consolidation.

Many, memorizing words, limit themselves only to such memorization, believing that they have “learned” the material. In fact, the main job is repetition and reinforcement.

2. Repetition (English — Russian)

Shuffle the deck, take out one card with the English side up. «Tree». We remember, we do not peep. The picture that you drew in your imagination at the stage of memorization pops up in your brain: tree three three three trees with fallen leaves against the background of a sunset. We remembered — a tree! We put the card aside in the “Learned” pile. If you have not remembered — in «Unlearned». But before you postpone, look at the meaning. Have you spied on? Surely the tongue was spinning?

We run the whole deck in this way, look at English words, try to recall the Russian ones. As a result, we have two piles of cards: learned and not so much. There may be one heap, but this is at best. Or vice versa, at worst.

We take a stack of unlearned cards and run it again.

We repeat until there is one deck of cards left — learned. Now, when you see the word «tree», you will recognize the «tree» in it, but not the fact that you will recognize «tree» in the «tree».

3. Repetition (Russian — English)

Knowing a word in the English-Russian direction and in the Russian-English direction is far from the same thing. You can easily verify this by working out flashcards from Russian to English. We need to practice recognizing words in both directions. We repeat all the actions from the previous stage, but we are already looking at the Russian word, remembering the English translation. We also run all the cards until one pile remains — learned.

4. Fastening

At this stage, we take a stopwatch and run the whole deck for a while: first in English-Russian order, then in Russian-English. We turn the card over and, as soon as the eye recognizes what is written, we shout out (you can “shout out” to yourself, mentally) the answer. We look at the time: let’s say we drove the deck in 34 seconds. We repeat, trying to break the speed record.

Your task is to achieve instant recognition of the word, you must recognize it without hesitation for a moment.

When you see an object, for example, a dress, do you immediately know that it is a “dress”? You don’t rummage in your brain for the right word, do you? In the same way, when you see the word «dress» on the card, you should, bypassing the translation stage, immediately understand that the word on the card means a dress. The pinning stage is needed to minimize the amount of time between seeing the word and recognizing it.

That is, in fact, the whole procedure.

Words will not be memorized in the same quality — some are better, some are worse, but thanks to intensive study in both directions, and even in a different order, some words will not only catch on the memory «hook», but also settle in the passive vocabulary … I repeat once again: many people mistakenly believe that it is enough just to memorize words without any repetitions — this is not so! If you limit yourself to only the first stage (memorization), the work efficiency will be much lower.

The funny thing is that by adding a fixing step, I unknowingly followed the scientific theory of Professor Paul Nation. It was only recently that I learned that a stopwatch is an important tool in language learning, or rather, in achieving the automatism of speech skills. Back in the 1980s, Nation established that automatism, the fluency of skills (speaking, writing, and to some extent reading and listening) is best developed when four conditions are met:

  1. The student is focused on the meaning of the text;
  2. 100% understandable material is used;
  3. The student works in an atmosphere of haste, pressure;
  4. The amount of exercise is large enough.

All these conditions are met when you study with cards: the focus is on the meaning of words, the words are all familiar (you got acquainted with them at the first stage — memorizing), you are driven by a stopwatch, the volume of material is quite large.

If you learn words simply from the sheet, from a dictionary or a textbook, then you will not be able to change the order of words, and this will greatly reduce the effectiveness of memorization. When you memorize words in a certain sequence, they involuntarily become attached to their neighbors, and randomly the same words can no longer be remembered.

There is absolutely no point in “learning” words simply by reading aloud or silently a pair of English and Russian words. Information is more firmly ingrained into memory when you recall it, retrieve it from memory without prompting.

Sight-reading word-translation lists is not a recollection, but a repetitive reproduction — so you will not remember anything.

Working with flashcards, you look at the English word and fish out Russian from your memory, look at Russian and remember English — this is recollection. It makes no sense to just read the words without straining your memory.

How to make flashcards for memorizing foreign words: 3 effective ways

This article explains why flashcards are ideal for memorizing new words in a foreign language, and how to make this technique even more effective.

This technique for learning foreign words is simple: cut out small cards from paper, write a word or phrase on one side, and a translation or meaning on the other. First, flip through the cards, reading the word in a foreign language and the translation.

Turn the cards over to the foreign language side, shuffle them. Now the main task is to remember the translation for each word from the deck. Don’t remember — look at the translation.

Remembered a word — put the card aside and continue to work with the rest until you have learned all the words or phrases.

Why cards work

They make you focus

One of the features of cards is that the amount of information in them is limited by the form. Unlike a book page with several paragraphs and dozens of sentences, a card contains from one to several words that become the focus of attention.

You always know what is worth working on

Whether you use paper cards or an application of a similar format, this type of training is good because you immediately recognize the result, you just have to turn the card over and see the answer.

To improve knowledge, it is important to receive an assessment of your work in a timely manner and learn from mistakes. With the cards, you will forget about the many days of waiting for the test results from the teacher and will be able to immediately correct the shortcomings, answer the next question, taking into account the mistakes made earlier. The likelihood that you will remember the correct answer is much higher.

They make you repeat material

We all know the phrase «Repetition is the mother of learning,» and the cards perfectly embody this principle.

Think you should repeat English verbs again? Just shuffle the cards and you’re done — you’ve got a new sequence of words.

With each new repetition, the mistakes will become less and less. Soon you will want to get rid of them altogether, so you will repeat the material more and more. And now, without noticing it yourself, you memorized the necessary information.

Let’s take a look at a few ways you can help make flashcard learning more effective.

Where to get words

  • From the tutorial — the easiest way. If you are studying English at an educational institution or courses, you must have at least one. Feel free to take all the words and phrases from the lesson and organize them into flashcards. This will help you learn them the fastest by the next lesson.
  • From English-language sources. It is unlikely to be suitable for beginners, as it requires basic knowledge of English to understand texts or speech. Try to read a short article in an English-language edition, write down all unfamiliar words and phrases on cards with translation. Look up the meanings of words in a translator or dictionary, expressions — on the sites Context.reverso, Merriam webster or Oxford dictionary.
  • From a thematic word list. These are presented both in textbooks and in collections on the Internet. Write out 20-30 words on one topic, learn at a time — nothing superfluous.

Use different types of information

People are divided into visuals, audials, and kinesthetics. The former are easier to remember information with the help of images, the latter — thanks to the sound row, and the latter need tactile sensations and movements.

It is worth noting that people perceive information in all three ways, just some people prefer to do it in a certain way.

Back to the cards: what happens if we use multiple perceptions to learn new material? What will be the learning outcome if you use images, soundtracks and videos?

This will allow you to better remember information, since memory will create not one, but several images for a word or expression — visual, auditory and tactile.

For example, pictures can be used in cards, only they must be truly memorable: funny, cute, or even absurd.

French Chat Grincheux, aka Grumpy Cat, aka Grumpy Cat

If you want to remember a card with the word chat (cat in French), do not stick a picture of an ordinary cat on it. Instead, find a fun image like the Grumpy Cat meme.

You can also write a word in an unusual font or circle the letters with a bright marker, and in addition watch a funny video with cats on.

Put the word in context

It is difficult for the brain to retain abstract information for a long time — help it. The information you want to remember should make sense. An effective way to do this is to create context for each card.

For example, a photo of your happy uncle from last New Year’s might be a good illustration of the Spanish word tio (uncle).

Good flashcards need context or they risk becoming boring word lists.

Use spaced repetition

You have decided to learn 100 unfamiliar words in English. You will remember them pretty well right after cramming. But with a high probability, within the first hour, you will forget up to 60% of new words. Your brain will not consider this knowledge important enough, and will simply delete it.

However, if you repeat the same words a second time after a while, you will need less time to remember and reproduce their meaning. This is the spaced repetition technique in action. The easiest way to bring it to life when learning foreign words is using flashcards.

With each subsequent repetition, it will take you less and less time to fully recall the information. In the end, as you scroll through the cards, you will memorize all the words and can start mastering a new deck.

The main thing when learning foreign words in karchki is regular repetition. Having made the cards, do not throw them into the far corner, but repeat the words every day until you memorize everything from one deck. Then you can safely move on to another, periodically returning to the words from the old deck.

English flashcards: is this method effective?

Download this online tutorial in PDF

Today we will talk about the effectiveness of the method learning english words with flashcards… Let’s consider the pros and cons of this approach, as well as learn how to print cards for ourselves or download ready-made ones.

First of all, I would like to note that I personally know people who have learned several foreign languages with such cards. In addition, this method is very convenient for memorizing special vocabulary before negotiating. Such people have their whole house littered with cards. When you «taste» the effectiveness, you will not be torn by the ears. Flashcards are an ingenious and simple method. Only it must be used strictly correctlyotherwise it will be a waste of paper and time.

The idea of memorizing words is the visual representation of a word, as well as its association with a picture. This is definitely one of the additional tools for learning foreign languages, but the most useful tool.

Now let’s move on to disadvantages using flashcards to learn English. Many have already tried to memorize words in this way, but in «combat conditions», a picture was recalled, an association was recalled, but not a word! Either they could not remember exactly or pronounce it correctly. Take a look at this schedule:

It reflects the dependence of memorizing words by the method of flashcards on their repetition. Thus, if you do not repeat what you have learned, then after 4 days approximately 70% of the language material is forgotten. Perhaps this is somewhat exaggerated. Words may not be forgotten completely, but pass into a passive stock.

Now you surely understand how to use flashcards with English words correctly… If you repeat all the words after 20 minutes and go over the flashcards the next day, you will be able to memorize about 70% of all new words.

English flashcards and mnemonics

Learning English using flashcards can be supplemented with the help of mnemonics. In short, mnemonics is a combination of special techniques and methods that make it easier to memorize the necessary information and increase the amount of memory by forming associations.

A word has been given that needs to be learned. This word, for example, vehicle… We know that it is a large vehicle and the word ([‘viːɪkl], «viykl») is read. Coming up with an association (a Russian word similar to this) — fork. Imagine a picture uniting these two objects in the most strange way.

For example, a large vehicle with a yellow tarpaulin body pierced by a large fork. Further, imagining a machine with a fork, we write down the word on one side of the card, on the other the translation and how it is read. Next, we put 10 such cards in our right pocket, take out, say, in the subway, and then yes, everything is as usual with the cards.

When 10 words are learned back and forth, we put them in the left pocket. When there are 100 cards in the left pocket, we repeat.

Conclusion:

With the right approach, regular repetition of words and the use of mnemonic techniques, the English flashcard method shows high efficiency, even without supervision from the teacher.

On the other hand, constant “cramming” is required, which is not suitable for everyone.

As an alternative to this method, I can recommend a communicative approach that does not require memorization, but requires you to constantly communicate only in English with a teacher or just with a native speaker.

Learn English words — for learning 10 words every day

Having a large English vocabulary is vital. Indeed, in order to understand the interlocutor, even grammar is not as important as sufficient vocabulary. The same goes for communication. You will be understood if you make a mistake in the tense of the verb, for example, but if you cannot say a specific word, then this will significantly complicate communication.

We recommend that you take note of the list of English words to learn from this article, which will come in handy in the most common situations in life.

To learn English words quickly and effectively, you can use familiar flashcards, the association method, special online lessons and programs.

Method of associations

Many people love the method of associations in learning English words, and it consists in the fact that you associatively memorize a word, in accordance with what it looks like to you in your head. If your imagination is not so developed, use the method of cards, which is convenient because you do not need to memorize images. It is enough to do a self-check from time to time on the words that you have learned recently.

Flashcards for learning English words

The method of using the cards is quite simple and several times a generation of Ying-Yaz students have used this method. To do this, you need to make a deck of cards, where on top there will be a word in Russian, and on the other hand — in English. The man flips through the cards and names the word.

If he does not remember, he puts the card down to the bottom of the deck to repeat it again and so on until all the words are remembered. The same deck should be used no earlier than a week later to make sure that all the words are firmly rooted in memory.

Here’s what English flashcards might look like:

And it doesn’t matter on what medium the cards for learning English words are located — on paper or in electronic form. Many English vocabulary programs use flashcards. This trend has not been spared by our online trainer for learning words.

Recollection Method

The most enjoyable method of learning English words is with the help of pleasant memories or interesting films, books, communication with people. In this case, you do not need to forcefully try to remember anything. You just need to think correctly, think about the context in which you met a new word and remember. Quite often, talking with native speakers, you can improve your English level at times.

Mnemonic method

Today, another way of learning words and replenishing your vocabulary has become popular — the mnemonic method. To do this, you must compose a short story from a list of words that you need to learn.

Thus, thanks to the logical sequence of words, you can learn many times more.

Moreover, if you compose a text from words in English, then remember how the word is spelled, if in Russian, then how it sounds and how it is translated (for this you need to use the transcription of an unfamiliar word right in the text).

If you learn 10 words a day, then in a few months you will be much more confident in speaking and successfully understanding English by ear.

What words to study?

It is very interesting, but the fact is that English words for learning for every day are best taken from those words that are used most often and so move deeper into the language until the frequently used words are familiar to you.

The study confirmed that the 10 most frequently used words in English make up 25% of the words that are used every day. That is, these 10 words can be a great foundation for learning English. Examples of such words are, to, be, we, after, on, there, who, their, me.

It will be useful to draw up an algorithm for learning English words that will systematize your knowledge. So, you can learn first 10 verbs, then 10 adjectives, 10 nouns, or you can learn words by topic.

How many words you need to learn every day, you decide for yourself. But still it is better to listen to the opinion of experts and define for yourself at least 8-12 words.

Programs for learning English words

Learning English words online is a convenient way to learn a language quickly and comprehensively, because, as a rule, such programs are adapted for people with different levels of language, everyone will find something for themselves that will be interesting to him.

By the way, our Lim English English vocabulary program allows you to learn up to 20 English words in one lesson. And believe me, this is a lot and is quite consistent with the daily norm. Check out what the screenshot of the exercise looks like:

Learning English words by flashcards — OTUK

It is suitable for beginners and students with a fairly high level, children and adults.

There are different approaches to building and working with decks, but the essence of the method is always the same. On paper or cardboard sheets of small size, the words that need to be learned are written down, and their meanings are on the back. The student memorizes words and translation in various ways. Some of the benefits of flashcards for learning English words:

  • Convenient format. Small pieces of paper can be put on your desk at home or at work, in your bag or even in your pocket. Thus, you can practice them during breaks, while traveling in public transport, sitting in a cafe, etc.
  • Using different types of memory. You will be able to remember the visual representation of the word, your articulatory apparatus — how it is pronounced, and your hearing — how it sounds. If you wish, you can also write down the translation on a separate sheet to reproduce the word in writing.
  • Motivation. Often we cannot bring ourselves to study English, because we do not really know what needs to be done today and how long it will take. Flashcard vocabulary learning gives you a very concrete idea of the work ahead and is also rewarding when you complete the activity. These mini-lessons seem easy enough to get started.

Despite all the pros, there are some downsides to word learning flashcards. Firstly, by the beginning of working with them, you need to know well the features of English phonetics, or at least be able to read transcriptions so as not to remember the wrong pronunciation of the word.

Secondly, many words have such a number of meanings that it is not possible to write them all on a card. In addition, memorizing such vocabulary out of context is unlikely to be effective.

In this case, for beginners, you can advise the choice of the most common meaning when drawing up cards or relevant to a specific topic.

How do you choose words for your flashcards?

All cards need to be formed into decks to make it easier to work with them: learn, repeat words, track progress. The vocabulary is usually grouped by topic. But where do you write out the words you need? Here are some examples of sources:

  • Textbook. If you are a beginner in English or want to help your child learn, just take the textbook of the required level, open the first topic and write down all the words studied in it. The second deck will be for the second theme, etc.
  • The setting or situation in real life. You can write down the names of the objects that surround you on the cards in Russian, and then find the English equivalents. For example, one deck might be about items in the kitchen, another about everyday activities, and a third about roads (modes of transport, names of road infrastructure, etc.). The tricky part is finding the correct English translation, not an obsolete or slang word. If you choose this method, ask a competent teacher, or preferably a native speaker, to check the ready-made flashcards.
  • Books, podcasts, films, radio programs. Various media, as well as fiction and documentary works are another source of new words that can be transferred to the card. Whenever you hear an unfamiliar word, write it down, then find the translation and add to your stack. The problem is that this method most often does not allow you to form thematic decks, and it is even more suitable for those who already have a good knowledge of English. By the way, there is always a danger that a specific word heard in a radio program or read in a book, you are unlikely to meet elsewhere.

We also suggest you use a simple tip for organizing your cards. After you build the decks, make a hole in the corner of each card with a hole punch, and then slide the leaves onto the metal ring. This way you will not lose anything and can easily and quickly sort through the cards, even with one hand. When working at home or in any other calm environment, you can remove the cards from the ring, and after the lesson, put them back on.

How to learn words from flashcards?

To begin with, you can read a word in English, and then remember the Russian translation. Then it is better to use the reverse technique: go from the Russian meaning to the English translation. If you managed to remember the meaning, put the card aside, if not — down the deck to work it out again.

For flashcard learning to be effective, it is important to repeat the words periodically. Usually it is recommended to use spaced repetition according to the scheme: repeat after 1 day, after 3, then — 5, 7, 10, 14 days. By the end of the two-week period, all the words from the deck are usually stored in memory.

After that, you need to take a fairly long break, for example, a whole month, and after that one more time go through all the cards, but already in a shortened cycle. If the words are very forgotten, you can repeat it twice a day, for example, after one, three and five days.

This approach allows you to almost imperceptibly transfer new vocabulary from short-term to long-term memory and, as a result, memorize it well.

Mobile Apps

To save time and avoid preparing flashcards manually, you can use one of the mobile word learning apps. You can learn new vocabulary from flashcards, for example, using Quizlet or Anki. These programs allow you to create your own cards and download ready-made decks.

By the way, apps like Duolingo also use the card method to some extent. The advantages of such programs are that they themselves remember which cards you have problems with and offer to work them out again, as well as choose the optimal time for repetitions.

However, there is always the possibility of downloading an incorrect deck or learning words that you don’t need, at least for the time being.

An effective technique for memorizing English words

Would you like to know how best to memorize English words? First, take a vocabulary list. Vocabulary lists (thesauri) are groups of words united by a common theme. For example:

  • List of frequently used verbs: to be, to go, to do, to have, etc.
  • A list of weather-related adjectives: rainy (rainy), sunny (sunny), windy (windy), etc.
  • A list of nouns meaning family members: mother, father, sister, brother, uncle, etc. )

So how do you remember them? To do this, you can do the following.

Make sentences with every word on the list

Merely reading and memorizing a word is not enough, at least in most cases. But by making your own proposals with him, you can significantly move forward. Try it yourself and you will feel the effect.

Let’s say you need to memorize the word resign (which means to resign, to resign). You can make the following sentences with him:

  • I am sorry, but I must resign. “I’m sorry, but I have to quit.
  • The new manager is already leaving, he resigned yesterday. — The new manager is already leaving, he quit yesterday.
  • She loves her job and she will never resign. — She loves her job and will never quit.

Use words in the story

Take a list of words and write a short story with them. It is not at all necessary that the story be coherent and meaningful. If it is absurd — even better! It’s more fun this way.

Let’s say you are learning the verbs starting with the letter E: earn, eat, end, enjoy, estimate. You can write a story like this:

  • Andy was eating dinner and enjoying a quiet evening, when he started thinking about his future. He estimated the amount of money he must earn. This ended his enjoyment. Andy was eating dinner and enjoying the quiet evening as thoughts of the future began to haunt him. He estimated the amount of money he was obliged to earn. This spoiled his mood.

Write words on flashcards and practice every day

Vocabulary cards are special flashcards that are used to memorize information. On them you can put an English word, a translation into Russian, as well as a photo or drawing.

For example, you might want to prepare a set of cards related to food. On one side of the card, write the word in English, and on the other, place a picture or translation of that word.

Vocabulary flashcards are a good tool for learning a new language. Plus, with them you can turn classes into a game.

Use dictation to memorize the spelling of words

Make a dictation. You can do it yourself, just follow these steps:

  • Write the words (usually no more than ten) on a piece of paper. Use two columns, one for English words and one for translation.
  • Fold the sheet so that only the translation is visible to you.
  • Take another sheet and write down the English words corresponding to the translation. Don’t peek at the answers! The point is to remember the spelling.
  • When finished, compare the words you wrote with those on the first sheet.

Even if you do not succeed the first time, do not despair. Try it a few times and you won’t believe how quickly you can start to achieve success!

However, keep in mind: do not spend too much time on dictation. Like flashcards, they are for simple memorization, not understanding of words, and therefore should be an additional exercise, but not the main one. If you don’t practice using these words, you will quickly forget them.

Practice words in conversation with a friend

What are good friends for? Take a friend, explain to him what you need, and start practicing! Compose dialogues and try to use as many new words as possible. The conversation does not have to be meaningful, sometimes even more fun if it turns out to be absurd. The important thing is that you improve your vocabulary and at the same time get a reason to laugh!

In it, you can easily learn words according to the proposed memorization method, and track your progress, and set reminders for repeating already studied material. But first things first.

Paper card technique

With the help of paper cards, generations of translators have been increasing their vocabulary in record time. This seemingly simple technique is based on the very mechanism of memorization, the use of short-term and long-term memory.

The student has a deck of cards, each with a foreign word written on one side and a translation on the other. He leafs through these cards, pronouncing foreign words and memorizing the translation. If the word is remembered, he puts the card aside; if not, he puts the decks down to repeat later.

After memorizing all the words, the cards are put aside, and after a certain period of time (a week or a month) they are repeated again.

The initially learned word gets into short-term memory, and after the cards are put aside, it is quickly forgotten. However, later it turns out that the erased information came in handy and instead of short-term memory, learned words fall into long-term memory. In other words, they are memorable.

Like paper cards, only better

The Uchisto application fully implements this technique of cards. You can flip them, read a new word in English and its transcription, and on the back — the translation.

You can put the memorized cards aside by clicking «Learned», or you can keep them for review by simply flipping with a swipe. In addition, you can change the settings and learn words by translating from Russian to English.

After studying each vocabulary, the «Check in 30 days» timer is automatically set, so that you periodically pass the tests and do not forget the material you have passed.

As you can see, the technique of cards is fully implemented in the application, however, unlike real cardboard cards, learning words in Uchisto is much more convenient for several reasons.

Firstly, on each card there is not only a transcription, but also an audio icon, by clicking on which you listen to the correct pronunciation of a word in English. Thus, the application partially replaces your teacher.

Secondly, you can edit the translation of words by adding notes about your associations with the word. The association technique helps you memorize words even better and transfer them into long-term memory from the first time.

Associations and complete methodology «Uchisto»

A word that is not associated with images familiar to you is easily forgotten. The brain simply did not build a neural connection for this word, it is not associated with anything and instantly disappears from your memory.

To memorize a word, you need to associate it with familiar objects and concepts. For example, you come across the word challenge, which means «problem» in translation.

You imagine the NASA Challenger spacecraft and the disaster that killed the entire shuttle crew. It was a massive blow to the reputation of the United States, colossal monetary losses and a real PROBLEM.

So, an unfamiliar word connects in your brain: challenge = disaster of the shuttle «Challenger» → serious problem. You have built an association for yourself, new neural connections have appeared in the brain, and now you can easily remember what this word means.

When you have come up with a vivid association, linking the word with the translation, do not rush to click the «Learned» button. First, repeat the word aloud five times while visualizing your picture. By the way, for associations it is advised to present something funny and ridiculous — it is more memorable.

So, the complete teaching methodology «Uchisto», with which you will memorize words in the application, sounds like this:

You read an unfamiliar word → check your pronunciation → see the translation of the word on the second side of the card → imagine the association with the word and its translation → repeat the word aloud five times and at the same time scroll your association in your head → press “Learned” → consolidate the result, translating from Russian to English → set a reminder to repeat words after 30 days.

If you do not remember the technique, you can always look at it again in the application itself. In the «Settings» tab, in addition to switching from Russian to English and sounds, there is a step-by-step description of the method.

And now one more important point: exactly what words you will learn. After all, all the words in the dictionaries «Uchisto» are not chosen by chance.

We remember only the necessary words

There are more than a million words in English, but in everyday speech, at best, several thousand are used. So if you need basic language skills to speak fluently with foreigners, read online publications in English, watch news and TV series, then a few thousand is enough to start.

The application «Uchisto» presents precisely the frequency dictionaries — a selection of 100 words most often used in everyday life and literature.

Why exactly 100 words? It is known that taking small steps towards a goal is much easier than trying to learn a lot at one time. A clear distribution into portions of 100 words helps to systematize your learning, start with pleasure and follow your progress with the same pleasure.

To get started, you are given three free dictionaries with which you can rate how much you like learning according to the Uchisto method. And then you can buy separately one dictionary at a time or buy everything at once with a 20% discount.

We follow the progress and do not forget to repeat

On the last tab of the Uchisto application, you can track your progress by day: how much you learned on what day of the week, how many words your vocabulary increased in general.

Of course, one app is not enough to learn English and speak it fluently. For example, to improve your spoken English, you can try lessons with native speakers via Skype, and to improve your vocabulary, you can watch movies and TV shows in English.

However, the Uchisto application will provide you with a platform for a great start, will help you to believe in your capabilities and strength, even if you are starting from scratch.

You learn words in any convenient place and at any time: in traffic jams, transport, queues or in the evening, before going to bed, which is especially effective for long-term memory. The main thing is not to lower the bar.

100 words a day, 700 a week, 3 a month — and you can already be fluent in English and understand what they are talking about.

And then — there are no limits to improvement. New vocabularies are added to Uchisto with every update, so you always have a reason to train again.

Why flashcards are better than English learning software

You may want to invest in any kind of English language learning software, including the online word learning software that is widely advertised on the internet, but do not fall for the advertising promises of developers and manufacturers. All that glitters is not gold. So all of these programs can have a lot of pretty pictures and use the latest technology, but will they actually be more effective than other simpler and older methods? In my opinion, no.

This is why humble word cards outperform the most complex programs:

1. They are cheaper

Go to any office supply store and buy blank cards the size of a business card. They cost almost nothing. A training CD will cost you at least 300 rubles, and possibly 30000 if we are talking about licensed programs such as Rosetta stone.

2. You can use them anywhere

Even on the way to work by bus, subway or train. Even if you have a laptop, try to get it out when you are in a crowded subway car and there are only standing places left! With a small pack of flashcards in your pocket, you can learn English anywhere, anytime — even while walking down the street.

3. You will not spoil your eyes

Every time you look at a computer or laptop monitor, your eyes strain harder than if you were looking at a regular book. This is due to the fact that the picture on the screen is constantly redrawn at a frequency of 50-100 times per second.

Even as I write this article, my eyes are starting to get tired. I don’t know anyone who can honestly say they enjoy reading from a computer screen.

With your flashcards, you can create the right learning environment, whether on your desk, on your couch, or on a park bench.

4. They do not break and never become outdated

I still use my flashcards to remind me of words that I have forgotten, even after a few years. They come with an Unconditional Lifetime Warranty — just don’t waste them! And you will never have any downtime associated with computer repairs.

5. They work!

The first set of flashcards you make should be composed of individual words. You need to write the target word on one side and the translation on the other. Practice with words until you have a vocabulary of at least a hundred words.

You are now ready to use your flashcards to learn whole sentences. Use the words you’ve already learned to make sentences that you’ll remember. Ask someone who speaks the language you are targeting to check your flashcards for errors.

You don’t want to remember your mistakes!

Start learning words with flashcards and soon you’ll be ready to start mastering conversational English. Once you’ve memorized a few dozen words and phrases, you can really benefit from language practice with native speakers. It depends only on you when you start speaking English.

Abstract Words and Grammar Cards for New Words

Note 8/22/2022: This is an older blog post containing information about using the Anki software to create flashcards for language learning.

Fluent Forever now offers a proprietary app that automates flashcard creation, letting you concentrate on your learning progress. Check out the 13 languages available in the app, and download it now to start your journey to fluency.

Once you’ve built a foundation with several hundred simple vocabulary cards, you can use these flashcards to teach you the rest of your vocabulary.

You’ll be learning your words in context without memorizing translations, which will help them stick in your memory.

Before you start, you’ll need the following:

  • An example sentence in your target language that you understand, usually through the help of a translation. In the beginning, I generally get these from my grammar book, since those sentences have been hand-picked and translated, and they come with a nice explanation of the grammatical concepts within them. I don’t mind the use of translations here, as long as you don’t include them in your flashcards.
  • Pictures that somehow relate to the content of your example sentence. If you’re learning a sentence like “My homework was eaten by my dog,” you could grab a picture of homework, a guilty dog, an angry teacher, a student, a classroom, etc. It’s not particularly important that you get a perfect picture for your sentence, just that you get some picture. I like to use the basic version of Google Images for this.
  • (Optional, but handy once you’re at an intermediate/advanced level) A definition of the word you’re learning in your target language. I’m assembling monolingual dictionary recommendations for this purpose on my language resource page.
  • (Optional, but handy) Associated grammatical information for the word you’re learning — gender, conjugated forms, etc.
  • (Optional, and usually not necessary at this phase) A recording of the word you’re learning. I like to use Forvo.com.
  • You should know how to add images to Anki flashcards. If you’re not confident at that, go to my tutorials on Anki.

What the flashcards look like

• Card 1: Production (Which word goes in the blank?)

Card1Front.png

Back Side

• Card 2: Comprehension (What’s an example sentence for this word?)

Note: Your goal here is to think of any example sentence or context in which this word is used. If you happen to think of the one on the back side of the card, great. But if you think of a different one (The book is by George Orwell), thats totally fine. Mark it as correct.

• Card 3 (when needed): An additional definition for your word

Card4Back

• Card 4 (optional, rarely needed): Spelling (How do you spell the word in the blank?)

Note: I rarely use this card type unless I’m learning a word with tremendously difficult spelling, or when learning a language like Chinese or Japanese that use unpredictable characters for their words. For those two languages in particular, I suggest doing a few more modifications, discussed over here.

…to this.

3. Click the button on the top right, next to ‘Deck.’ Select ‘[Your deck name]::2.Everything Else’ from the list and press ‘Choose.’
Screen Shot 2014-05-01 at 5.32.45 PM
(Note to advanced Anki users: I do this just for organization. Feel free to skip this step, as long as you’re not using the 1. Minimal Pairs deck – that deck has special settings that you won’t want here.)

4. Now you can start making flashcards. To make flashcards 1, 2, and 4 (all flashcards related to the dog), here’s how I filled out my flashcard info (click to magnify):

Dogdata.png

Note that generally, I’d leave the ‘•Test Spelling’ field blank, particularly for a word with a simple spelling like ‘by.’ Then, I’d only generate cards #1 and #2.

5. Click the ‘Add’ button on the bottom to make flashcards 1, 2, and 4.

6. Then, to add any new definitions (card #3, above), I’d fill it out like this and click ‘Add’:
