BE AWARE:
Due to the backgrounds of many of my most recent arrival students, many of the items in this book had never been seen before, and so had NO meaning visually. This is not a solution to a recent arrival, but ONE piece of a much larger web of needs and creative resourcing.
I used this resource daily as an ESL educator, they were some of the best investments I made into my new position. Because I traveled throughout the district I needed resources I could carry with me, and use in any setting. Both of these books were heavily used in 3 different school districts during my teaching career by students with language skills at Newcomer to transitioning.

Excellent resource for teaching reading to children, adults, and ESL students. It covers all the basic English sound patterns with easily understandable, clear pictures of words using those patterns, as well as short sentences using those words. I am using it with with a woman who does not speak English and who, until I started helping her, had no schooling and did not even know letters. Using this book at home has been a breakthrough for her. It is helpful for reading and spelling patterns

Not very good, the illustrations are indistinct and confusing for a child learning english. I do not recommend this book.

As a non-English speaker, I cannot pronouce new words well wihout the International Phonetic Alphabet. Occasionally, I knew that phonics are the best way to pronouce words. Then I decided to study them by myself and teach my daughter. This dictionary is an ideal phonics material for kids, with colourful pictures and interesting demonstrations. My daughter likes it so much that she nearly reads it every day.

Nicely organized by phonics sounds, with illustrations that are easy to understand. I am using it to teach a Chinese girl how to read and speak English. I wish there were a few more words and pictures for each sound, but otherwise it is a great teaching tool.

This is one of the most amazing English language learning books ever published. Molinsky and Bliss are authors of another book on my highly recommended list: The Word by Word Picture Dictionary, a close second to the Oxford Picture Dictionary. The artists are even more talented than the authors. The illustrations are vivid, easy to understand, and closely match the words. When I was in Korea, I spent a lot of time in the Kim & Johnson bookstore. I saw a lot of good phonics books on the shelf, but Word by Word Primary Phonics Picture Dictionary is in a class by itself.
