Sight Words
Are you looking for a new word work activity that your kids are sure to love? This Building Blocks Sight Word Box is a hands-on way for your children to practice reading and spelling their sight words. Not only will your kids be having fun, but they will be learning too!
What are sight words? There are two different types of high frequency words. First, there are words that don’t follow the phonics “rules” so kids need to memorize them. There are also words that are frequently used in writing so it is easier for children to remember them. That way, they can build fluency and don’t have to sound them out every time they are reading.
Getting Ready To Make A Building Blocks Sight Words Box:
What’s Needed:
- Plastic Container
- Building Blocks Plate
- Glue
- Container Label
- Building Blocks
- Building Blocks Sight Word Cards
One of my favorite things about this activity is that it is not only easy but it’s inexpensive to make too. I bought everything to create these boxes at the Dollar Tree, but you can find similar supplies on-line too.
How To Make A Building Blocks Sight Words Box:
To begin making these building blocks boxes, use the glue (a strong adhesive) to attach the base plate to the bottom of the plastic container’s lid. While I was shopping for supplies, I measured the containers so I knew that the lid would fit. If you use a smaller container, you can cut the base plate if needed.
If you want a larger spelling area, you can glue two base plates to the lid of a container that is about the size of a shoe box.
Next, download and print the label for the container. (Click on the picture below to get the label) Then, cut the label out. You can laminate it or just glue it to the top of the lid. After the glue dries, place the building blocks (or Legos) in the container.
After the glue dries, place the building blocks (such as Legos) in the container for easy storing.
To prepare the Building Blocks Sight Word Cards, first print them on card stock. I printed two pages per sheet of colored card stock to keep the cards in the container. Then, laminate the cards for extra durability and cut them out. As an option, you can punch a hole in the corner of the cards and put them on a ring.
How To Use The Building Blocks Sight Words Box:
After selecting a sight word card, your students will read the word to themselves or their partner. They will then use the building blocks to spell out the sight word.
After spelling their words, your students will write their words on the recording sheet for extra practice. This interactive activity is fun for morning tubs, literacy centers, or as an enrichment activity for early finishers.
This Building Blocks Sight Word Box is an engaging and entertaining word work activity that your students are sure to enjoy.
Pin It For Later:

Sight Word Booklets
Build your child a library of books with these sight word booklets. These booklets help provide children with a context in which to learn their sight words. Beside each title is a list of the sight words found in that book.
To make the booklets:
1) Print, then carefully slice along the dotted line in the center.
2) Fold in half along the horizontal.
3) Then fold the other way, in half and then half again. Unfold the last two folds, pushing the bottom of the paper in together so the center that you cut moves outwards to form the booklet.
No staples or sticky tape needed!

Download and print flash cards from the Dolch, Fry, and Top 150 Written Words lists, or make your own Custom Sight Words Flash Cards. The cards are available in three sizes full-page (1-up); half-page (2-up); and quarter-page (4-up). We recommend printing the flash cards on card-stock paper, to make the cards stiffer and more durable.

4. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is there an arrow under each word in the flash cards?
A: The arrow serves multiple purposes. It reminds teachers to place their index finger on the circle and move it from left to right under the word to lead the student’s eye across the word. The arrow also helps students orient the flash card and helps them remember to read from left to right.
Q: How do I hold the flash cards?
A: Hold the flash card so that it is directly in front of your child at your child’s eye level. When you move your finger across the arrow, make sure that it does not obstruct your child’s view of the word as this distracts attention from the words.
Q: The flash cards don’t print correctly — why do they go over the edge of the paper?
A: The one-to-a-page and four-to-a-page flash cards need to be printed in landscape. To do this, go to your printer settings and select “landscape” (not portrait).
