How to Make a Great Recipe Card or Cookbook in Word

Whether you’re making a cookbook for personal or business purposes, you’ll want to customize the cookbook Word template you choose. These steps show you exactly how to do that.

For purposes of this demonstration, I’m going to use the premium Recipe Book Template for Word from Envato Elements. I chose this template because it’s in letter size and can be edited in Word, InDesign, and PowerPoint.

Let’s get started:

1. Choose Your Page Layout

Copy the template files, so you can revert to the original designs anytime you want. Next, open the template.

This cookbook template has several page layouts. You may decide to use them all or to use only one throughout the document, for consistency. For this tutorial, I’ve chosen this layout:

2. Enter Your Recipe Content

Next, it’s time to type your recipe content. Click and drag across the placeholder text to select it. Then type in your own content.

3. Customize the Fonts and Font Sizes

If you wish to change the fonts and font sizes, now is a good time to do so. Again, select a piece of text. Make sure you’re under the Home tab. Use the font and font size buttons to select the settings you want to use.

You can also use the buttons on the ribbon to add styles like bold or italics for emphasis.

4. Change the Object Colors

Changing the colors of fonts and other elements in your cookbook involves similar steps. Select the object or text, then use the appropriate buttons on the ribbon to select a new color for it.

5. Add the Recipe Images

Finally, it’s time to add images. Click on the placeholder image or shape. Under the Shape Format tab, go to Shape Fill > Picture…. Find the image file in your computer, then click Insert.
