Reading aloud to babies is one of the most effective ways to foster early literacy skills. Here are our 20 best baby books for baby’s first library.

Next time you visit your baby’s doctor, you may get a somewhat surprising prescription: Reading.

That’s right—the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently recommended that doctors encourage parents to read aloud to children every day starting as early as birth(!) and continuing up until kindergarten and beyond.

How reading helps children

1. Improves literacy skills

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics report, reading aloud to babies and young kids is one of the most effective ways to foster early literacy skills. And early, consistent parent-child reading is a key factor responsible for eventual reading success.

Additional studies suggest that when we read to babies, they grow into children who have larger vocabularies and even more advanced math skills.

Through reading, your newborn will also eventually begin to pick up on changes in tone and inflection that will teach him about language and reading on his own, as well as the fact that different sounds and tones are used to convey certain emotions and feelings (source).

2. Improves bonding

Research also shows that reading to a baby—even a baby as young as a newborn—can promote bonding. Even if it doesn’t seem like your baby is paying attention, think of this as a time to be close—to snuggle up together and soothe baby with your heart beat and the sound of your voice.

You’re also modeling good behavior from a very early age, and showing your child that reading is a fun, interactive activity with importance.

But not enough kids are reading

Also according to the report, more than one third of children in the United States start kindergarten unequipped with the literacy skills they need. Can you believe that?!

We’re big readers at our house, but still. This is a major wakeup call for us.

We read several books aloud with Griffin every night before bedtime. But our squirrely seven-month old Paloma? Not so much. But that’s about to change—both because of this study, and because she’s just getting old enough to engage with a book.

So it’s time to dust off some of our best baby books, including the titles listed below.

Vocabulary plays a very crucial part in the field of education. It helps a child in learning to read and write. Like, when a child starts to identify the image and letters of a book, he/ she also tries to speak the sound of that letter and then the word.

Gradually, when he understands that he knows the word quite well, like CAT, he is able to read it properly and that too with self-confidence. However, what about when a child comes across a word or image that he does not know or has never seen before.

Well, in that case his self-confidence might shake a bit, and he might start feeling insecure. Well, such are the cases when vocabulary books for children come handy.

  1. We’re going on a bear hunt

2 The going to bed book by Sandra Boyton

Еще одна книга с супер легкой и быстро запоминающейся рифмой от всемирно известного автора (у нее вообще много классных детских книжек — очень рекомендую). Картинки тоже чудесны. И так же можно все действия, описываемые в книге act out- разыгрывать — лексика очень актуальна — про укладывание спать, но с интересным поворотом)

3. The very hungry caterpillar by Eric Carle

4. Where is baby’s belly button? by Karen Katz

Книжечка простая, изображает малыша и его части тела. Очень приятные картинки. На одной странице каждого разворота вопрос (Where is baby’s … ?

5. From head to toe. by Eric Carle

Еще одна книга, которая очень нравится детям, потому, думаю, что ее можно распевать и проделывать все, о чем в ней говорится. И снова в 1 книге сразу столько полезного: Конструкция I am , животные, их характерные движения (глаголы действия), вопросительная конструкция Can you do it? и ответа  I can do it, которые 12 раз повторяются. Eсли эту книгу прочитать хотя бы раз 5, то уже эти конструкции повторились по 60 раз! Попробуйте не запомнить их после этого). Да и вообще — это же классно повыгибать спину как кошка, постучать себя по груди как горила, подрыгать ногами, как ослик!

6. Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? by Bill Martin Jr

Книга тоже гениальна своей простотой. Здесь цвета, животные, причем при обращении, название каждого повторяется дважды и потом еще раз в ответе. И еще одна замечательная конструкция What do you see? и ответ I see a green frog looking at me. И так на каждой странице — у предыдущего зверя спрашиватеся про следующего. Примерно после 10 прочтения эта вопросительная конструкция настолько застревает в памяти, забыть ее уже будет очень сложно. А в школе на нее же тратят несколько лет и все равно дети делают ошибки.

7. Goodnight moon by Margaret Wise Brown

Очень умиротворяющая книга, будто создана, чтобы читать ее перед сном. Текст рифмованный, картинки приятные — сочетаются цветные и чернобелые, как будто в темноте на них смотрим.  Сначала описывается комната — перечисляется все что в ней было. А потом всему этому желается спокойной ночи — то есть, еще раз все повторяется. Отлично вводится одна из самых полезных и распространенных конструкций  There was/were… Еще один момент, который очень нравится, на одной из картин изображена The cow jumping over the moon — отсылка на известную детскую потешку, которую очень кстати, можно будет вспомнить во время или после чтения.

8. Guess how much I love you by Sam McBratney

Одна из самых мимимишных книг на свете — не возможно не растрогаться, читая ее. Текст не малышковый вроде бы, но именно ее эмоциональность и помогает полюбить ее даже самым маленьким деткам. Думаю, история знакома многим по переводу — книга мировой бестселлер и издана на многих языках. Папа заяц и его дитеныш обсуждают кто кого сильнее любит. В конце, уже почти засыпая, малыш произносит — I love you right up to the moon! И, целуя на ночь уже задремавшего зайчонка, папа говорит «I love you right up to the moon — and back.» Не знаю, как у вас, у меня постоянно на этой фразе слезы наворачиваются. За что еще люблю эту книгу, за то, что тут тоже много движений, которые можно повторять за персонажами, а движения всегда и смысл помогают лучше понять и вообще очень полезны для детского развития!

9. Dear zoo. by Rod Campbell

They sent me an elephant — He was too big. I sent him back. So they sent me a giraffe. He was too tall. I sent him back.

10. Each peach pear plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg

Книга-игра I spy . Причем то, что ищется — это герои либо известных сказок, либо детских потешек. Текст рифмованный, его не очень много и он достаточно простой,  картинки милейшие. После этой книги все эти сказки и потешки очень хорошо пойдут, так как уже знакомы и не будут пугать новизной.  Структура тескта повторяющаяся, ритмичная, что также очень благотворно для маленьких деток. По ходу еще и разные места с предлогами хорошо вводятся.

  • Cinderella on the stairs — I spy the three bears
  • Three bears out hunting — I spy Baby bunting

11. Where’s spot? by Eric Hill

История очень простая — перед обедом куда-то потерялся щенок и мама ищет его по всему дому, заодно, обучая нас названиям мест и предметов в доме и предлогам, которые с ними употребляются. Книжка с дверцами — очень нравится деткам, впрочем и сам милый щенок вызывает много умиления. Ну а мы этим вовсю пользуемся)) Еще одна нужная вопросительная конструкция многократно повторяется — Is he in the box? Is he under the bed?

12. Llama llama red pajama by Anna Dewdney

Это книга — вообще шедевр) Рифма — супер, картинки отличные. Но самое главное — сюжет. Мама уложила спать малыша ламу, пошла своими делами заниматься вниз (на первый этаж), а он начал бучу поднимать — ему и темно и страшно и одиноко. И целый энциклопедический словарь по теме выражения беспокойства — от похныкивания до истошного крика. В конце концов, маме пришлось срочно бежать к нему наверх и произнести просто гениальные слова (и урезонила немного и приголубила в конце):

  • Baby Llama, what a tizzy! Sometimes Mama’s very busy
  • Please stop all this llama drama and be patient for your mama.
  • Little llama, don’t you know, Mama Llama loves you so?
  • Mama Llama’s always near even if she’s not right here.

13. Are you my mother? by P.D. Eastman

История тоже, навреняка, многим знакома. Мама птица высиживала яйцо и решила раздобыть еды, чтобы было чем накормить птенца, когда тот вылупится. А он вылупился как раз когда ее не было и решил отправиться на ее поиски. И так как летать он еще не умел, то вывалился из гнезда и пошагал, по дороге спрашивая у всех, кто ему попадался «Are you my mother?» и в ответ слышал «I’n not your mother. I’m a dog/cow» (еще одна конструкция вопросительная, которая отлично закрепится с большим количеством повторений). В конце он удачно оказывается в гнезде и тут и мама вернулась и малыш ее сразу узнал. Кроме полезной лексики, эта книга поможет узнать ребенку много всего интересного  о птицах, что они появляются из яиц, что летать сначала не умеют, названия некоторых животных. Но одна из самых важных идей — что мама обязательно вернется. Это очень важное осознание для маленьких деток, которые часто тревожатся когда мамы нет рядом.

14. Nursery Rhymes Book
