Note:

В отдельных случаях слова character и personality в английском языке близки по значению и могут быть взаимозаменяемыми, например: ‘Despite their different personalities/characters, they became the best of friends.’ Однако, во многих случаях их значения не совпадают. Когда, говоря о характере человека, употребляют слово character, чаще имея в виду внутренние жизненные принципы, убеждения, «моральный облик» человека. Можно сказать, что сharacter – это совокупность качеств, характеризующих человека, которые проявляются «когда на него никто не смотрит». Character имеет отношение к порядочности, принципиальности, честности, трудолюбии и т.п. В отличие от character, personality, характеризует поведение человека в обществе, его отношение к другим людям, его «внешнюю оболочку». Поэтому такие «внутренние» качества, как честность (honesty), трудолюбие (diligence) в английском языке относятся больше к character, т.к. это «внутренние», скрытые от других, качества человека, а, например, такие качества как общительность, жизнерадостность (cheerfulness) больше характеризуют personality, т. к. эти качества, человек проявляет в общении с другими людьми. Иногда можно услышать, что разница между personality и character заключается во времени (так как personality проявляется сразу же в самом начале общения, а на то, чтобы узнать character, требуется время). Примерами предложений, в которых возможно употребление только слова character, могут служить следующие: He has good character. (= Он хороший человек (человек высоких моральных принципов.) She is a woman of a fine character. (Эта женщина – хороший, порядочный человек.) (в приведенных примерах даются суждения о моральных качествах человека, о его порядочности). А в предложениях He has a cheerful personality, She has a witty personality that is often appreciated by everyone имеется суждение о внешней манере поведения. В этих предложениях мы не можем употребить слово character вместо personality. В то же время не следует противопоставлять character и personality, т.к. и первое, и второе – просто взгляд на одну и ту же личность с разных сторон.

Jack is popular with his fellow-students and most of his teachers.
He works hard in his classroom, but sometimes he can be noisy. He is not deliberately
disruptive, but he does find it difficult to sit still for long periods. He is full of
energy. He is late for his classes more often than most students but he is always willing
to help teachers and students.

Jack is generally good-tempered, but he has been in two fights since he
left school. He is quite happy at school and doesn’t seem to have any strong opinions
about how things could be changed. He gets on well with his parents although he frequently
quarrels with his younger sisters.

Основной «инструмент» в описании внешнего вида человека — это прилагательные и эпитеты. Чем более разнообразен ваш словарный запас в этой области, тем более точно и подробно вы сможете описать другого человека или себя.

Если вас просят описать свою внешность, то, скорее всего, зададут вопрос «What do you look like?» (Как ты выглядишь?) или «How would you describe your physical appearance?» (Как вы опишете свою внешность?).

Помните, что если на собеседовании вас попросят описать себя (How would you describe yourself?), то речь будет идти не о внешности, а о личных и рабочих качествах.

Если же вам задают вопрос о внешности другого человека (например, просят описать девушку или парня, который вам понравился), то вопросом будет «What does he/she look like?» (Как он/она выглядит?). Вот тут-то можно описать внешность более подробно с использованием ярких эпитетов, которые максимально точно передадут образ человека на словах.

Не стоит забывать и о словах-обстоятельствах степени (degree modifiers), которые помогут более точно описать внешность:

2. The topic of today’s lesson is Appearance and character. We will practice our vocabulary and learn new grammar material “The Verb to have”.

• Risk taker someone who risks loss or injury in the hope of gain or excitement
• Smart dresser a person who habitually dresses in a smart or elegant way
• Loner a person who prefers not to associate with others
• Free spirit a person who thinks and acts in a free way without worrying about norms or social rules
• Outdoor person (outdoorsman) a person devoted to outdoor recreational activities or simply spends much time outdoors
• Wimp a weak and cowardly or unadventurous person
• Home lover a person who enjoys being at home and who is fond of their family
• Chatterbox a person who talks constantly, esp about trivial matters
• Daredevil  a reckless person who enjoys doing dangerous things
• Thrill seeker (adrenaline junkie) one who appears to favor stressful activities; a person who enjoys taking part in extreme sports and other activities involving physical risk

1. Объяснение нового грамматического материала «Глагол to have (has) и оборот have got (has got).

1. В разговорной речи для выражения значения иметь, обладать в настоящем времени употребляется оборот have (has) got, если речь идет о единично, конкретном случае наличия данного предмета, явления или состояния.

He has got (he`s got) a car. – У него есть машина.

I have got (I`ve got) a new sweater. – У меня новый свитер.

2.Глагол to have выражает значение иметь, обладать, владеть, если речь идет о постоянном случае наличия данного предмета, явления или состояния.

She always has a lot of work to do. – У нее всегда много работы.

Глагол to have в значении иметь никогда не употребляется во временах группы Continuous.

3. Глагол to have в сочетании с некоторыми существительными (breakfast, dinner, supper, lesson, a shower, a break, etc.) утрачивает свое первоначальное значение иметь и приобретает значение, обозначающее процесс: to have dinner – обедать, to have supper – ужинать и т.д.

Указанные сочетания могут быть потреблены во временах группы Continuous

He is having coffee now. — Он сейчас пьет кофе.
