Common Words and Phrases Puzzles
Objective: Familiarize and test your students on knowledge of
common phrasesUse teamwork to accomplish a common goalIntroduce
students to the fun of juxtaposing wordsIntroduction:
The clich or common phrase is to be avoided in writing, because
itmakes for a bland, uninteresting experience. This puzzle game,
however, usesthe clich or common phrase to make for an exciting
game you can play in yourclass. It is interesting to see which
students are well versed in «old sayings» andcommon phrases that
have fallen into the vernacular. What is the Game Premise?
The teacher or moderator has a list of phrases (cliches, book
titles, songtitles, old sayings, etc.) all of which have a key word
or phrase in common. Atthe start the key word or phrase is
announced to the players. And they are toldthat they must think of
a famous phrase that includes the key. For example, youmight start
like this:«Okay, class, all of these phrases will have the word salt in
them. I’ll give you aclue and you have to give me the popular
phrase. Here we go.Clue: «Phrase to describe a very good person»Answer: «salt of
the earth.»Clue: «Another name for an old sailor»Answer: «an old salt»
You might even ask students to think in combinations. For
example:«Okay, class, all of these phrases will have the words hot or
cold in them. Herewe go.»Clue: «Title of a Tennessee Williams Play»Answer: «Cat On A Hot
Tin Roof»Clue: «Phrase that means to get into trouble»Answer «in hot
water»Clue: «Not talking to you anymore»Answer: «getting the Cold
shoulder» -
Okay. Where Do We Get These Lists From So We Can Begin
Playing? You could create some on your own, of course, but the best way
(andmost productive) is to have your classes make them up. At the
end of thislesson, I have included worksheets that I use in class
to guide the studentsthrough the work process. It will probably
take two classes: one class will beused to play a sample game to
give the students the feel for playing. The secondclass will be use
to actually have the students construct a game of 10 to
20examples.Ideas for Building the Puzzles
q Sector the class into groups of two or three students per
groupq Give the groups the worksheets that will guide them through
the process ofcreating a puzzleq Collect all the puzzles from each class and
use them in alternate classesq Some students will have trouble
getting going, so you might want to give themsome help — give them a phrase or two based on their keys
(titles of books, common sayings, titles of songs or movies,
etc.)q Tell your students to use a dictionary to look up their key
words, where theymight find some examples to help themq If you have access to the internet or a CD Rom encyclopedia,
students coulduse the search feature to look phrases or titles that
might include their keywordsq If you give the assignment for homework, students can draw
upon theknowledge of the older members of the family to give them
some old sawsthat might work with their key wordsIdeas for Using the Puzzles In Class
I find the most effective and exciting way of using the puzzles
is in classroomcompetition. Divide the class in half (half
boys/half girls, divide by equal numbersor some other method). Give
each side a team name — let the kids make it up.Use a chalk board
or other to keep score in full view of the class — you takecharge
of this and it needs to be played up, like any sport. Tell the
students thatas soon as anyone on the team knows the answer, shout
it out. The first one youhear (and this creates a lot of
interesting controversy if you play hard of hearing)is the team
that gets the score. If teams are wise they will listen and
capitalizeon an answer if the other team member can’t think of the
whole expression fastenough. -
