Hi, all,

I’m posting some items for sale, and I know how to include the abbreviations for dimensions in English: 20″ H × 10″ W × 18 » D equals height, width and depth in inches. But how do I do it in Spanish? My attempt:
80 cm A × 32 cm A × 42 cm P*.

I’m describing the altura, ancho, profundidad of a storage cabinet.

* Don’t worry about the centimeters not matching the inches. I just made up the inch measurements as an example.

    • #2

    Most times nothing is posted. Other times the full words are posted. I don’t recall seeing abbreviations for that. As both ancho and alto start by a, I think that to make the abbreviation any useful, you should use the first syllable of each word. It’s not something usually made but it would be perfectly understood.

    Your question has been answered, but I’ll add that when you give the dimensions, you should not give the height first, as the custom (at least in AmEn) is to give the two plan-view dimensions first, and the height last. Also, the custom is to give the longest of the two plan-view dimensions first. Therefore, it would be 42 × 32 × 80 cm (no need to state the units three times).

    Incidentally, the standard words used on eBay, at the US Postal Service, etc., are length, width, and height, in that order, where length is the longest of the two plan-view dimensions.

    You can use Microsoft Word to create documents in different formats and sizes. You can choose from the standard sizes built into Word. The other possibility is to customize the dimensions according to your requirements.

    By default, a new Word document uses an A4 size sheet, measuring 8.27 inches by 11.69 inches. Schools and offices use the A4 size most for printing presentations. But documents can be larger or smaller in comparison to A4. Also, the user might want to change the page size of the document for printing.

    It is always possible to print on a larger paper using a special printer setting. But if your printer does not allow that, the only option is to change the size of the document in Word.

    The process is very simple and you only have to follow the steps in our instructions. You can change the size of all the pages while working on a Microsoft Word document. Sometimes, you may want to change the size of a specific page inside a document.

    Thus, you may set up a custom page size for:

    • All pages in a document
    • Specific pages in a document

    We will show you both the methods.

    Let us begin.

    Method #1: Custom page size for all pages in a document.

    Step #1: Open the document

    Open the Word document for which you want to change the page size. The document could be new or an existing one. The process is the same for both.

    Click on the Layout tab on the top menu bar to change the ribbon.

    Step #2: Select a standard page size

    In the Page Setup section, click on the Size icon. This will open various selections for page size.

    You can select from standard sizes like:

    • Letter (8.5” x 11”)
    • Tabloid (11” x 17”)
    • Legal (8.5” x 14”)
    • Statement (5.5” x 8.5”)
    • Executive (7.25” x 10.5”)
    • A3 (11.69” x 16.54”)
    • A4 (8.27” x 11.69”)
    • A5 (5.83” x 8.27”)
    • B4(JIS) (10.12” x 14.33”)
    • B5(JIS) (7.17” x 10.12”)

    Step #3: Select a non-standard page

    Click on More Paper Sizes. This will open the Page Setup dialog.

    Click on the Paper tab.

    Under Paper size, click on the downward arrow. Scroll down and click on Custom Size.

    Enter your desired Width and Height of the page in inches.

    Click on the downward arrow next to Apply to:. Word offers two options:

    • Whole document—The page size applies to all the pages in the document.
    • This point forward—The page size applies to all pages following the cursor.

    Click on Whole document.

    Click on Ok to exit the dialog.

    Word changes all the pages in your document to your custom size.

    Method #2: Custom page size for specific pages in a document

    Step #1: Open the document

    Click on the View tab on the top menu bar to change the ribbon.

    Step #2: Increase the number of pages on display

    In the Zoom section, click on Multiple Pages.

    Drag the Zoom slider in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen to the left side.

    This will increase the number of pages Word is displaying on the screen.

    Place the cursor at the beginning of the page you want to change.

    Step #3: Change the page size

    Click on the Layout tab in the top menu bar to change the ribbon.

    In the Page Setup section, click on Size.

    This will open various selections for page size.

    Click on This point forward.

    Click on Ok to exit the dialog.

    Word changes the size according to your choice for all pages following the cursor.

    Step #4: Revert to original page size for the rest of the document

    Place the cursor at the beginning of the page from where you want to revert to the original size.

    Repeat Step #3, only this time enter the original Width and Height of the pages.

    Word changes the rest of the pages in the document to their original size.

    Conclusion

    We have shown you how to change to a custom page size for all pages or for a few pages of your document. Follow our instructions step by step for easily implementing the change in page size.

    If you want to learn how to setup custom page size in Google Doc, check out this tutorial.

    B2 First: use of English part 3 (word formation with height and length)

    The word formation part of the B2 First use of English exam sometimes includes the noun or verb form of adjectives such as short, wide and dark. Here is a list of some of the more common adjectives and their forms.

    Look at the information in the table for a few minutes and try to remember the words. Then click below to hide the information and try to answer the questions at the bottom.

    Adjective Noun Verb
    deep depth deepen
    high height heighten
    weight weigh
    wide width widen
    long length lengthen
    short shortage (= not enough) shorten
    large enlargement enlarge
    low lower
    tight tightness tighten
    loose looseness loosen
    strong strength strengthen
    weak weakness weaken
    dark darkness
    dark
    darken
    bright brightness brighten

    Note: other, less common, forms of these words do exist (for example weighty — adjective, meaning heavier than expected or serious, or shortness — noun, usually in the expression ‘shortness of breath’). However, I have tried to give the more common or useful forms of the words where possible.

    Practice 1: word formation (use of English part 3)

    Write the correct form of the word in brackets to complete these sentences.

    Practice 2: more word formation

    Write the correct form of the word in brackets to complete these sentences.

    I’m trying to replace a specific class-less word, not the entire string, with a form of the same height (or font-size) and width. I want it to work even if I change the CSS. Here is my code:

    var magicWord = "abracadabra";

    var width = $('#words').width();
    var height = $('#words').height();

    var x = width + "px";
    var y = height + "px";

    $('html').append("<form><input type='text' style='width: "+x+"; height: "+y+"; font-family: Courier;'></form>")

    Here is my updated fiddlicious. I figured it out myself using replace(). Anything more efficient will be awarded the coveted green check mark.

    You will have to have the DOM identifier for that word. you can change your like :-

    <span id ="words">Here is a bunch of <span> abracadabra </span> </span>

    and javascript as

    var magicWord = "abracadabra";

    var width = $('#words span').width();
    var height = $('#words span').height();

    var x = width + "px";
    var y = height + "px"

    $('html').append("<form><input type='text' style='width: "+x+"; height: "+y+"; font-
    family: Courier;'></form>")

    You’ll have to wrap it in its own element or do something more obtuse (generate a new element with just those contents (somewhere offscreen perhaps), calculate the size of that element, and then remove it). You might be able to make a rough calculation based on element line-height and the width of characters (in em units), but without knowing which characters are in use or using a monospace font-family, I can’t imagine it will be very accurate.

    Html canvas has a text metrics ability. You can get the text width like this:

    var canvas = document.createElement('canvas');
    var context = canvas.getContext('2d');
    context.font="14px Verdana";
    var width = context.measureText("abracadabra").width;

    You can also get the height, but it’s more difficult because you have to use canvas to do linescans.
