Вначале мы рассмотрим употребление can и выполним can упражнения для детей, а затем перейдем к более сложным аспектам – употребление can и could для выражения вероятности, а также отработаем употребление конструкции be able to вместо can.

Упражнение 1: Can или Could?

В этом упражнении вам нужно выбрать между глаголами can и could, учтите, что они могут использоваться в утвердительной или отрицательной форме, то есть возможны варианты can’t (cannot), couldn’t (could not).

For example, I like biology. I adore animals, plants, insects, and all forms of life. I spend many hours reading books about wild nature, characters and habits of animals, underwater life etc. I believe that nature is so mysterious and powerful, that it’s natural to admire it and to devote all your life to its exploration.

But it’s not my only hobby. Most of all I like painting and I want to be an artist. As a child, I began to draw everything I saw around myself. I drew my parents, my friends, my kitten, flowers and other things. Then I entered art school and began to study painting.

My parents doubt this is the right decision. They say this profession demands on you to give it all your energy and passion and one must be fully dedicated to it in order to achieve perfection. At the same time nowadays it’s difficult to earn your living with painting. But I don’t agree with them.

I think that modern life open new horizons for artists and they can work in many fields today. Many artists work as designers for advertising agencies or for web design studios. Yes, there are many designers who draw with computer programs like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, but the skill of drawing by hand is highly appreciated in many design studios. Besides, such job demands not only computer knowledge, but also creative thinking of an artist.

So I look in my future with optimism and hope to become an artist.

Модальный глагол «CAN» (мочь, уметь)

Модальный глагол can в переводе означает быть в состоянии, быть способным, мочь, уметь, иметь право. Данный глагол имеет две формы: can для настоящего времени и could для прошедшего и для образования условных предложений II-го и III-го типов.

В настоящем времени can не имеет форм спряжения, то есть не изменяет форму в зависимости от лица и числа:

• Разрешения (наряду с may):

The teacher says we can go home.

В последнее время в грамматике наметилась тенденция к более частому использованию can (а не may) для выражения разрешения.

• Отрицательные формы can’t и couldn’t используются для выражения запрета и переводятся, как нельзя, не надо.

You can’t cross the street here. – Нельзя переходить улицу здесь.

• Can и could употребляются  для выражения просьбы или запроса. Could считается более вежливым способом попросить об одолжении. Can используется в менее формальной обстановке, в кругу знакомых, друзей.

Can you hold on a minute? (to a friend)

Could you hold on a minute, please? (to you boss)

•  Can и could также употребляются для выражения вероятности. Can выражает большую степень вероятности, чем could.

Helen can be at the library. – Вероятно, Хелен в библиотеке. (Говорящий практически уверен в этом.)

Helen could be at the library.  – Возможно, Хелен в библиотеке. (Говорящий не уверен в этом.)

• Can также используется в некоторых устойчивых выражениях:

Can’t help doing smth. – не возможно удержаться от чего-либо

Can’t but do – не возможно не…

I can’t but agree with Fred’s ideas. – Не могу не согласиться с идеями Фреда.

Can’t but wonder – не возможно не задуматься

Every day Helen can’t but wonder where she went wrong? – Каждый день Хелен задумывалась, где она совершила ошибку.

As can be – выражение, использующееся для усиления фразы
