DO is the MAIN verb of the English language! Do, did, does
The verb to do is one of the most important verbs in the English language. A very large part of the rules of English grammar is devoted to the use of the verb do. And without knowledge of these rules, communication in English becomes impossible.
Word | Translating to Russian language | Pronunciation |
do | делать | International transcription:[duː]Transcription in Russian letters:[doo] |
The verb do in English means «to perform some action or work.» In most cases, English do is similar to the Russian verb. «do», but there are a number of difficult cases that you need to know and remember.
At first, you need to understand the difference between the verbs to make and to do. Both of these verbs in the dictionary are translated how to do «to do». But remember that:
- to make — Used when performing an action that has visible results.
- to do — used in all other cases.
For example:
I make a sandwich
I’m making a sandwich.
Used by make since there is a visible result — a sandwich.
Secondly, phrases such as:
- to do crosswords — to solve crosswords (not to do crosswords)
- to do an exam — to take an exam (and not to do an exam)
- to do ironing — to iron (in this case, the literal translation “to do ironing” is clear, but sounds clumsy)
shouldn’t baffle you. In such cases, do not limit yourself to literal translation, but look for a word that is suitable in meaning in Russian.
Auxiliary verb DO or 50% of all grammar
The verb do in English is used as an auxiliary verb for building questions and negations. In these cases, the verb do itself is not translated in any way. To ask a question grammatically correctly, you need to put the verb do in front of the subject. For example, we have an affirmative sentence:
You cats.
You love cats.
To get a question from an affirmative sentence, it is enough to put the to do verb at the beginning of the sentence:
Do you cats?
You love cats? (do — auxiliary verb, — semantic)
That is, in the interrogative sentence, the words go in the following order:
- Question word (optional)
- Auxiliary verb do (or one of its forms)
- Subject matter
- Predicate
- Everything Else
We sorted out the questions. Now I’ll talk about how a negative sentence is built. It’s almost as easy. It is necessary to put two words immediately after the subject — «do not».
For example, an affirmative sentence:
I cats.
I love cats.
turn into negative:
I do not cats.
I do not like cats.
The English do not like to talk a lot, so instead of «do not» they use the abbreviated version of «don’t».
I do not cats.
I do not like cats.
You can read more about word order in interrogative and negative sentences.
It should be noted that in some cases, interrogative and negative sentences are formed without using the auxiliary verb do. This happens when one of the so-called strong verbs is used as the subject. Strong verbs include to be and all modal verbs with the exception of to have to.
Verbs to be and to do in English: features of use
One of the most popular language confusion is the use of verbs to be и to do… This refers to the substitution of one verb for another, which occurs as a result of a misunderstanding of the functions and meanings of these words.
We have already covered the verb to be in detail, so now we will focus on comparing the use of verbs in situations in which confusion occurs most often.
Strong and weak verb
There are two broad categories of verbs in English — strong and weak.
Strong verbs include modal verbs and their equivalents, have got, auxiliary verbs (do / does / did) and to be… Strong verbs independently form negative constructs and questions:
Must he go to the dentist? — I must go to the dentist./I mustn’t eat apples.
In the case of weak verbs, we are not able to construct a question or negation without auxiliary ones, avoiding an error:
I live to Paris.
Live you in Paris? — error/
It is correct to say: Do you live in Paris?
He livesNote inParis. — error/
It is correct to say: He doesn’t live inParis.
So, we use the auxiliary do or two of its other forms (does / did) in order to correctly form questions and denials.
A mistake is born when students (by this word we mean all foreign language learners, young and old) begin to use auxiliary verbs for the forms to be:
He is Liza’s brother.
Does he is Liza’s brother? — error
He doesn’t is Liza’s brother. — error
Undoubtedly verb forms to be do not look like their original shape. We believe this is what can be confusing.
Remember: am, is, are, was, were are strong verbs and never use auxiliary do:
Is he Liza’s brother? — right
He is not Liza’s brither. — right
Rђ RІRѕS, do against. By itself how semantic this verb is weak and has a meaning делать… Accordingly, he needs the help of an auxiliary one that matches him in spelling and pronunciation doWhich is not translated into Russian and performs a purely grammatical function:
I do exercise every day.
Do I do exercise every day? — right
I don’t do exercise every day. — right
Do I exercise every day? — error
I do not exercise every day. — error / This sentence is meaningless and will be translated “I don’t exercise every day”. I would like to immediately ask “do not that? exercises»
Auxiliary
The second serious problem sometimes becomes choice of auxiliary verb.
Most of the courses are structured in such a way that acquaintance with English grammar and the language in general begins with the verb to be — to be, to be, to be somewhere.
Students are so used to designs with to bethat for them it becomes completely logical to use them as an auxiliary verb… It actually loses its meaning and sentences of this kind become grammatically equal:
She is inParis.
She lives inParis.
Let’s say that contextually it is possible to translate both of them as “She lives in Paris”. The following happens:
Is she in Paris? — right
Is she live in Paris? — ERROR
To benever will not be used as an auxiliary verb

When is does in English and when is do?
Hello friends! Verb do along with other auxiliary verbs, it is one of the most common in the English language. This is due to the fact that it can have many meanings, depending on the situation where it will be used. In this article we will talk about the verb to do (do, perform an action).
As you may have guessed, do and does are forms of the verb to do in Present Simple.
The use of do and does. How not to get confused?
Rule very simple:
in 1 person singular and plural (i, we), as well as in second and third person plural (you, they) → DO
third person singular (she / he / it) → DOES
1. She doesn’t do any tasks (true!)
Here doesn’t already indicate negation and present tense, and do is a semantic verb
2. Does she do any tasks? (true!)
Does at the beginning indicated that this is the question and the present tense for she (3rd person, singular), that’s enough
3. He didn’t do it’s better (true!)
It is important to use the infinitive after the auxiliary verb without the to
Consider a few suggestions:
With the verb do:
- I do teaching for a living. (I teach for a living.)
- We do our job with pleasure. (We are happy to do our job.)
- You do the same thing every week. Why? (You do the same thing every week. Why?)
- They do a lot of different things in their free time. (They do a lot of different things in their spare time.)
And sentences with the verb does:
- He does not exercises every morning. (He does his exercises every morning.)
- She does her shopping every Wednesday. (She makes purchases every Wednesday.)
- We have a multi cooker. It does most of the cooking for us. (We have a slow cooker. She mainly prepares food for us.)
In general, this rule does not contradict the main way of conjugating verbs in English. Usually we add to the verb in the third person singular Present Simple —s.
For example, the
- And sit — He sits (I sit — He sits)
- We live in Moscow — She lives in New York. (We live in Moscow — She lives in New York)
The same thing happens with do, only we add —es:
I do-He does.
The corresponding form of the verb is formed according to the same model to go
I go — He goes
Conjugation of the verb to do

you | It | ||

Why is it important to learn the conjugation of the verb to do?
The verb to do is a meaningful verb. It will be easier for you to move forward in learning English if after the first meeting with the verb do, you learn (or remember) its conjugation in the simple present.
To do can:
— act as a semantic verb
In principle, we have already seen in the examples above do as a semantic verb (that is, the verb on which the main meaning of the sentence lies).
Here are some more examples:
- Mold youdo me a favor please? (Please do me a favor.)
- He does not his homework every day. (He does his homework every day.)
- In my family my mother does the cleaning. (Mom does the cleaning in my family.)
— be an auxiliary verb (to form an interrogative or negative sentence)
An auxiliary verb is a verb that does not carry a semantic load, but is needed to build a grammatically correct construction.

The use of do and does in English, differences
Those who have just started learning English often face difficulties in using the verb to do.
The problem is that in some cases it can act as an independent verb, in others as an auxiliary verb.
Also the verb to do has two forms of present: do и does.
Use do / does often causes difficulties, so this issue needs to be considered in detail. But first you need to figure out in what cases the verb to do acts as semantic, and in which as independent.
To do: semantic and auxiliary verb
So, the semantic verb to do, which translates as «to do», «to engage», «to do something», means a full-fledged action.
For example:
Every day I do my homework. — Every day I do my homework.
I do this work with pleasure. — I do this work with pleasure.
Also, this verb can be used as an auxiliary. With its help, various grammatical constructions are built in English.
For example:
Do you tea? — Do you like tea?
Do they play tennis? — They are playing tennis?
I don’t to read magazines. — I don’t like reading magazines.
When used do, and when does?
Now you should understand the use do и does in English.
Does should be used with 3rd person singular pronouns, i.e. he, she, it.
For example:
She does her homework studiously. — She does her homework diligently.
He doesn’t bananas. — He doesn’t like bananas.
It is important to note one more feature: does can be used both with pronouns and with other subjects, which, according to the context, can be replaced by them.
Helen does her homework studiously.— Helen does her homework diligently.
My father doesn’t bananas. — My father doesn’t like bananas.
Do used with other pronouns or subjects, which can be replaced by them in the context.
I do my homework with ease. — I can easily do my homework.
They do the dishes in turns. — They take turns washing the dishes.
Now you understand what is different does from do and when to use each of them.
The three most common mistakes when using do и does
After we have sorted out the question, how do differs from does, consider what mistakes are most often made by those who are just starting to learn English. Try to keep them out.
- Using does in the past time.
It is worth remembering that does used exclusively in the present tense.
Those who make this mistake are guided by the rule: if the pronoun he, she, it — used does… This is why you can often see a sentence similar to this: He did not do his homework. — He didn’t do his homework. But this is wrong, right like this: He did not do his homework. - Using does in the future tense.
He will do his homework tomorrow. — He’ll do his homework. If you write like this in the test, you will surely get a low score.
It will be right: He will do his homework tomorrow. - Improper use does, do in denials and questions.
When constructing negative and interrogative sentences, a situation often arises when the verb do needs to be used twice as a semantic and auxiliary, and therefore confusion arises.
In this situation, the form does accepts exclusively an auxiliary verb. For example, this sentence is incorrect: Does she do her homework? — She is doing homework?
It will be right: Does she do her homework?

Do or Does? Rule, examples and basic mistakes
Beginners often have difficulty using do и does — forms of the verb to do. In this article, we will look at the rules for their use and common mistakes.
: “Has or Have? Rule and six common mistakes. «
Two important points about the verb To Do
If you don’t know what a «to do verb» is, first read the article «The verb to do in English». But even if you are familiar with the topic, two points are worth recalling.
1. Difference between Do, Does, Don’t Doesn’t
First of all, let’s make it clear that do, does, don’t doesn’t are all forms of the verb to do.
- Do, does — affirmative forms.
- Do not, does not — negative forms.
- Don’t, doesn’t Is short for do not, does not.
2. The verb to do as an auxiliary or semantic
Let me also remind you that the verb to do is used as an auxiliary or semantic verb.
- Auxiliary to do needed to build different grammatical structures. First of all, denials and questions:
Do I jazz? — I like jazz?
I do not jazz. — I don’t like jazz.
- Semantic verb to do it is used in the meaning of «to do, engage, perform» or (less often) to strengthen the meaning of another verb — in the translation, in this case, words like «really» are added:
I do my homework in the evenings. — I do my homework in the evenings.
I do jazz. — I really like jazz.
Let’s move on to the do and does forms.
Do or Does? — the three-point rule
- Does used with pronouns in the singular third person he, she, it, For example:
He does the laundry on Sundays. — He does the laundry on Sundays.

Rules for conjugation of the verb to do:
Verb functions
The verb to do in English is one of the most common. This is due to the fact that in grammar it simultaneously performs several functions in a sentence: it acts as a semantic and auxiliary verb, and can also give reinforcement to the verb after it. Let’s take a closer look.
Semantic verb
Used in its direct meaning. The dictionary gives the following translations:
a) do, perform, exercise
For example
For example
What are you doing? — What do you do / what do you do?
I do my work. — I’m doing my job.
b) do, do
For example
For example
He did well to accept my invitation. — He did the right thing to accept my invitation.
What are you going to do in this situation? — What are you going to do / How are you going to act in this situation?
c) create, do
For example
For example
to do wonders / miracles — work wonders.
d) fit, fit, be sufficient, meet the requirements
For example
For example
She has enough money to do her till he end of the month — This money will be enough for her until the end of the month.
that will not do — this will not work, this will not work, it will not work.
Also, the verb to do is phrasal. This means that depending on which preposition is after it, its meaning changes.
do away with | 1) finish 2) finish | That »sa practice that should be done away with. Is there any evidence that she did away with her husband? |
do down | 1) be ashamed 2) speak ill of smb. | There «s no need to do yourself down; you weren «t to blame. He always does everybody down. |
of the in | destroy, kill | The criminals have done in the old man. |

When do we use do, does, doing, did, done? Scooby Dooby Doo! ⋆ Speakingo
Do, does, doing, did and done are the same English word! When do we use which form, at what time and what kind? And what does Scooby Dooby Doo think of this ?! You will see the songs in the translation!
In this post, you will learn all about the English verb “to do” in its forms do, does, doing, did and done. It is used like:
- «Independent» verb in different tenses
- auxiliary
- way to enhance action
And at the end you will learn the lyrics and translation of the famous song in English from the Mystery Corporation “Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you?”.
Scooby-Doo was originally called «Too Much» (yes, we know), while the leader Fred Silverman, inspired by the song «Strangers in the Night», in which Sinatra sings the meaningless phrase «Scooby-doobie-doo», simply changed the name of the cartoon’s protagonist to » Scooby Doo. » Thank you, Frank Sinatra, for saving us from a universe in which the Mystery Corporation dog is called Too Much.
What does “do” mean in English?
The English word to do means “to do something, to do something”. It is a verb, a word that describes some kind of action. As in the legendary slogan:
(Just do it!)
or
(This is how we do it.)
When to use do and when does?
In general, the English language is simple! In Russian, in the present tense, we would say: I’m doingюyou are doingeat it, she’s doingno, we arerd, are you doingyou arethey dogt;… Different from each person! And different words have different variations!
In English, for all persons it will be the same except for one exception, or rather three (he + she + it = the so-called «third partiesо singular «):
- I do it. (I do this.)
- You do it. (You do it.)
- He does it. (He does it.)
- She does it. (She does it.)
- It does it. (It does it.)
We don’t change anything in the plural:
- We do it. (We do this.)
- You do it. (You do it.)
- They do it. (They do it.)
So the only thing we have to remember is that in the present tense, the present simple, only in the third person singular (he, she, it), instead of “do«Use»does«.
The choice between the verb do or does is very similar to the situation with the choice of the verb have or has, which will be discussed in a separate post:
When do we use did — done?
If we want to say that we have done something, we must use our «do» in the past tense.
Like most of the most common English words, «to do» is an irregular verb, which means that its past tense forms look as they want — sometimes there is not a single similar letter between them (for example, go — go, went — went)!

Do does rules — five mistakes everyone makes

Important facts about the verb To Do
There are two important things to know about the to do verb:
- There are four forms of the verb to do — do, does, don’t doesn’t, where Do, does use in affirmative sentences, DoNote, doesNote used in denial, and Don‘t, doesn‘t these are abbreviations for do not, does not.
- The verb to do in English is used as an auxiliary or semantic verb. We will consider below what role it plays in each case.
The verb to do as an auxiliary or semantic
Как auxiliary verb to do necessary when building various grammatical structures: interrogative and negative.
For example:
- Do you pizza? — Do you like pizza?
- She do not pizza. — She doesn’t like pizza.
How the semantic verb to do takes on the meaning “do, do, do«. Sometimes, with the help of to do, you can strengthen the meaning of another verb, then the word “really«:
- I do my excesses in the mornings. — I do exercises in the morning (do means «to do»).
- I do pizza. — I really like pizza (do as a verb enhancer).
Good job! But where is the did and didn’t? it’s not even in the quiz. Tnxs
jmtorillo
thanks but i dont understand the use of these words
Abdi M
i want to know about use of shall and will,, i know that shall use with i,& we
but whenever our teachers use will with i and we why ?
naheed khan
“Shall” has a few different uses.
1) It can mean the same thing as “I will” — “I will tell you tomorrow”/”I shall tell you tomorrow”.
2) It can be used to talk about something that has to be done, or to tell people to do something. “Students shall write their names at the top of the page.”
3) It can be used in questions — to talk about something that could happen, or make a suggestion. “Shall I come back later?” could mean that you are asking someone if you should come back later or not, or that you are suggesting you could come back later if they want.
“Shall” is very common in the UK, but not at all in North America. In North America we would use “will”/”must”/”will” + “maybe”/”could” instead.

thank a lot.

Thinking of things in English and not in your original language is not something I can teach you… it is something that must happen in your brain. Once you begin to “switch your brain” over to English, then you can begin to think of words in English. I can only suggest going to an English speaking country, or talking to yourself in English.

i have a doubt why we cannot use does has or doesn’t has instead of does have or doesn’t have?for she or he we have to use “has” right but above case why we dont?
kele
We must say “She/He doesn’t have” because the auxiliary verb “do” is the only verb you need to change to suit the subject.
Ronnie

I studied English in New Zealand , Manukau MIT 12 months and I still can’t use freely the language.
I had a lot of homework but little explanation and I just remember the material, but I must understand the logic of constructing for that to be able to make their own sentences.
With your help, I began to understand much more.

Will you please tackle about Other Pronoun forms?
1. Between you and (I,me),” said Tonya, “we will probably be assigned to the McMeekin account.” The answer is “me”. Why? What is the rule about this?
2. Have you asked Joseph and (she, her) if they plan to attend the seminar?
3. It was not (I, me) who ordered this manual.
4.Please explain my absence to Arthur and (she, her).
5. I do not know (who, whom)our manager selected to replace Pierre.
6. Mr. Parmar is the only broker (who, whom) we called for an appraisal.
Please explain these in a much easier to understand lesson.
Thanks,
Joshua
Joshua
Ah… you are confused because the usage of “whom” and “I” are old school grammar book rules! Whereas “who” and “me” we use nowadays! So, in very OLD FORMAL English, the correct answers are 1.I, 3)I, 5)whom, 6)whom but in spoken English (which ignores a lot of the rules) we would use me, me, who, and who! Hope that helps!
Ronnie
Thanks a lot for these video
Mohsen
Thank you for this lesson.
Q. Why don’t talk about “it” ?!
Moallem
it + does >> like: he & she
It doesn’t work.
Don’t and doesn’t for speaking only, for writing I should write “do not” and “does not” .. that right ??
Moallem

So, I would like you to provide a detailed tutorial on contracted forms of be, do and have forms that we use in our daily life. What about ( it ) ?

hi ronnie
when i spoke to my friends, sometime i get confused because not sure about are you going there or do you go there? please help me with this confusion.
sulo
“Are you going there?” is to ask if you plan to go somewhere in the future. Eg: “Are you going to the gym tomorrow?”
“Do you go there?” is to ask if the person frequents a place. Eg: “Do you go to Starbucks?” “Do you go to the gym?” — They are asking if you go to these places a lot!

Hi, i would really appreciate if you could help me figure the right word to use here. Should i use ‘don’t or ‘doesn’t in this sentence :
“Chris wants to buy a new book but don’t/doesn’t know which to get”
I think the right verb to use is “doesn’t” because the mention of name is the same as using it for he/she (singular 3rd party)
Please correct me if i am wrong. Thanks Ronnie

hi Ronnie,
Its great to have a teacher like you.
Need to know that if we are beginners then from where to start learning English, I mean about a sequence, that what should be the first topic then the second and so on, like a learning chart. Hope if you can make this easier for all of us.
Thanks & Regards
BJ
BJ
I think you should learn basic vocabulary and verbs first.
Then simple present tense, past and future tense.
Ronnie
Which Is Correct ? I Didnt spend or i didnt spent ? thanks
Jasper
I didn’t spend is correct. Didn’t is past so you don’t need to change “spend” to past tense!

For “does” and “doesn’t” you forgot the pronoun “it.”
Example: ‘It ((the toaster)) doesn’t ususally work. It does sometimes work after I whack it a bit.’
I suggest a
dding the nonpersonal pronoun “it” to this lecture — as well as the use of non-pronoun subjects with “do,” “does,” etc.

thank your very much for this free lesson. your a very good teacher.
what is correct.
1.the house doesn’t/dont have a roof?
2. lot of people don’t/doesn’t have a food on their plate.
3.their wives doesn’t/dont have a money
aj
You have to think if the noun is singular or plural. If it is singular use does/doesn’t. Plural, use do/don’t.
You think about this and email me what YOU think the answers are! Good luck!
Ronnie
I took above three questions as my exercise and find the answers below.
1. the house doesn’t have a roof?
2. lot of people don’t have a food on their plate.
3.their wives dont have a money
Please check and correct me if anything wrong.
saravanan
You need to put a capital letter on every sentence. A food and a money are both wrong. It should be money/food.
Ronnie
Dear Ronnie,
Thanks for your good effort. Your exercise is very interesting. I wish you post many exercise so that it will improve english grammer to every one using your net. Thank you and good work. KEEP IT UP.

Hi Ronny, i have two questions . first one, What’s diffrence between these sentences.
he likes her & he does like her. second question, i answerd these quiz but there one question missunderstand mean this senetnce”She does not like him bescause he is verey meaning her” it mean he not love him because he care her or she hate him because he nosy ..forget to tell you that’s first time to share here but i intearsting & enjoy by your method .so, i singup here & put in my favourit & will follow your video & new news hope to continue
Mousa
“He likes her” is how we normally say that one person likes another.
“He DOES like her”, is ONLY to emphasize that he indeed does like her!
”She does not like him because he is very meaning her”…. This should say ….””She does not like him because he is very mean to her”.
It means that he is a bad person and not nice to her, so she does not like him!
Thanks for watching and good luck!
Ronnie

Was/were is the past form of “to be” verb. I was here. We were at the park.
Did is the past form of do. We use for actions.,,,, I did my homework. I did the laundry.
Have/has is present, had is past tense. We use to show possession – I have 5 dogs. She has a headache.
I hope that helps!
Ronnie
Please tell me which of the following is correct?
What do jhon and raja do?
What does jhon and raja do?

mswirpm
“This is not suitable for our current requirement” is correct. It is present tense because the verb is “is”.

as per my understanding when we use present continues we have to use am/is/are+v1+ing. but in this sentense i have a confusion “It is not suitable ” i cant use ing here. is this sentence correct ?
mswirpm
“It is not suitable” is correct. You cannot use suitable with ing.
Ronnie

Hi,

mohamed121
Maam Ronnie your awesome, ms Ronnie my question is this, why the baby did not know how to write and how to read, why she could speak very well… I think the best to do is, if you want to know how to speak english fluently regardless of education i would suggests you can always hear the conversation in english language. reading and writing did not really2x essential I think hearing is best method if you to know how to speak English fluently. What do you think ms Ronnie? correct me if I’m wrong… thank and god bless…..
Reynaldo Q Paquingan
I think it depends on how you learn – some people can just learn by listening, others need to see the words, others need a more physical learning environment. Everyone is different. When I learned Japanese I had to write down the words to remember how to say them….but I didn’t learn the grammar!
Ronnie
how to use would?
srinivas8998
I want to know, why does the word she is used with have ? :S She is the third person and have is used in only negative sentences. :/
If you can help me out of this thing. I’ll be quite pleasured.
Aisha
In the example “Does she have”, we have to change only the aux. verb do to reflect the noun…..We don’t have to change any other verb….We don’t say “Does she has”…..
I don’t know WHY – I have no idea why we have ALL they grammar rules that we do – they don’t make sense to me!!
Ronnie
tank you so much Ms Ronnie
Taban

he,she it-does(present tense),did(past).Is it correct??
“he has done his homework” is this sentence correct?
1.”does she have an extra pen?”(or) “does she has an extra pen”
2.”yes she has” (or) “yes she is having”
which is the correct one from above senteces correct? plzzz rply me.
shaazz
I,we you,they-do(present tense),did(past tense).
he,she it-does(present tense),did(past).Is it correct?? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“He has done his homework” is this sentence correct? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1.”does she have an extra pen?” YES!!!!!(or) “does she has an extra pen” NO – you don’t need to change have because “does” is changed.
2.”yes she has” YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (or) “yes she is having” NO – you cannot use “hav+ing”!
Ronnie
if we are saying anybody then what we can use DO or Does??
1.”do anybody want to take responsibility” or 2.”does anybody want to take responsibility” or i think often we use “IS” like”is anybody interested in dancing” plzzz i’ll be thankfull to u if u clear my confusion with some examples.
Hope u understand my question.
shaazz
Does anybody is correct = “anybody” is singular! So…has anybody, does anybody, was anybody.
“Is anybody” is correct!
Ronnie
With Noun do we use do or does for e.g. Anita do not know English or Anita does not know English. which one is correct
Anita
Does
Ronnie
thanks alot Ms ..
I did that Quiz what you gave us !
thanks alot .. keept up !
Hassan
Mrs. Ronnie , thank you so much
Nagita
i want to ask.. based from your video i found that u used all the personal pronouns as the example.but where is “it”? i could not find it in your video. does it have different usage from the above stated? thank you
Constance Chee
It = does/doesn’t. Did/didn’t!
Ronnie
i also would like to ask about is it correct if the questions= a) where does she go? or we can say where does she goes? however when i asked my friends most of them answered the answer is a. why?
Constance Chee
You only have to change the auxiliary verb “do” to does, You do not have to change BOTH verbs (do and go)!
Ronnie
Ronnie,Thanks!!
But I have a question, very very silly question for you:What differences between verb “to be”,which can be “do,does” and “am,is,are”???I know it sounds silly, but it my problem sometime…))
annytka
Your question is not silly! It is a very good question as many people are confused with to be and do!
First of all do/does IS NOT part of “to be”! “To be” is only am, is, or are!
Basically, if you have an adjective in the sentence, you are going to use “to be” Ex… I am tired. Tired is an adjective so you cannot say I do tired!
I am hungry. She is thirsty. They are smart.
“Do” is an action verb, and we use it with a noun- “I do my homework”. Homework is a noun. You cannot say I am homework!!!
He does aerobics. She does the dishes, They do math.
Ronnie
Thanks,Ronnie! You open a great secret for me)))
annytka
Awesome!!! thanks alot!
elle
Wonder which is a better line- “Do you want to grab dinner” or “Did you want to grab dinner”. What is the difference between the two sentences and what circumstances might be appropriate to use one or the other. Thoughts?
Sparkle
Did you is past tense, but we use this sometimes in informal conversation!
Do you is present tense and “proper grammar” if you are asking the person at the moment!
Ronnie

what about CAN????
Will you always have a DO after a CAN????
As in “No can do!!!”
Just joking.
But you get what a mean!
Awesome stuff.
chris
Why do we use for third person the verb likes but when we use did we don’t. ie. He likes vs he didn’t like instead of he didn’t likes.
Maria
When we use the auxiliary verb “did”, we don’t need to change the other verb!
Ronnie
thank you Ronni i understand to your lisson.

Hi Ronnie, I have come accross this site trying to find help for my son (grade 3) with his English. He often makes mistakes with the use of “done” and I don’t know how to explain to him the correct usage, I can only tell him when it sounds wrong. Can you simplify when it is correct to use the word done as in, I did, I have done? The other day I done, I did?
lunar
Done we use with present/past perfect, or as an adjective “I am done”.
You cannot use done in simple past.
Ronnie
Thank you for all Ronni. i like your lessons

DEOKMAN
If I use “didn’t”, Do I need to change the verb that follows? NO!
I didn’t make that = correct!!!
Ronnie
thanks
DEOKMAN
In the example “Does she have”, we have to change only the aux. verb do to reflect the noun…..We don’t have to change any other verb….We don’t say “Does she has”…..
I don’t know WHY – I have no idea why we have ALL they grammar rules that we do – they don’t make sense to me!!
kaushal nigam
thanks for your lessons, I would like to ask you 2 questions. First I’m confused how to use the verb (Had) Ex, in one sentence you can se had had. I had had a big car, another question is the verb, (being) when can i use being, Ex, if i say , being a bad person is not good, its right, thanks for your help
dhagahoray
Had had is past perfect form. (had + p.p) Ex. I had had a dog but it died.I had eaten the apple.
Being we use in continuous forms of grammar. Ex. She is being funny, = She to be funny.

Hello Ronnie! I have one question on Present Simple. What form in do we use verb start in the sentence: “At 2 o’clock lessons____again.” With ‘s’ or witout ending?
I’m looking forward for your reply.
Thanks!
yerlan95
Because the word “lesson” is plural, you don’t need to use “s”.
If the word lesson was singular, you need the “S”.
Ronnie
Hi! Ms Ronnie I’d like to know if “It” is a “Pronoun” too, because i think you forgot it to put there. Thanks!
hiimswendy
Yes, it is a pronoun. You are right – I did forget it! With it we use does!!!

you with did or no??
azoz
Yes! You + did!
Ronnie
First i wanna say thank you, its really a very good videos and its really helpful!!
Second, i have two questions:
1. In this video you didn’t notice to “it” and “we”.. it would make me feel better if you will explain how do we reffer to them.
2 And the other questions is – can i write a sentence like that ” i’m not going” or “she’s not leaving” ?
becouse i saw another video that didn’t mention that way – and its got me confused..
you were talking about onlu “he isn’t” and not “he’s not”
the question is they both are ok?
ravid
It + does
We + do.
You can use both he isn’t and he’s not!
I’m not going” and “She’s not leaving” = both correct!
Ronnie

I have a question,
when we can use :
“Are and do” in a question ?
echa
Are + adjectives. Are you hungry?
Do + verb. Do you like pizza?
Ronnie
but how about in a profession,
why in “profession” have to uses are,
e.g . are you a nurse ?
echa
Profession we use to be. I am a nurse. ( I to be a nurse) You cannot say I nurse, as nurse in this case is a verb.
Ronnie

Hello Ronnie,
I wanted to know that when do we use “does not” and when do we use “doesn’t” and also reason behind that and also about other such words for example:”have not, haven’t”,”did not, didn’t” and etc etc.
I also wanted to know meanings of words such as “preety” much impossible..I’l “figure it out” and other such words used in english conversation.
I hope that you’ll do lessons for me on these topics..
And I also hope that you’ll reply me as soon as possible..
tanni
Doesn’t = does ….they are the same. As well, haven’t ”have not, haven’t”,”did not, didn’t”. The only difference is that we use the shortened more and save the longer ones (have not) to make our point stronger.
Preety is not a word. Pretty??? Pretty means beautiful and very.
Ronnie

1 more thing I wanted to know.
We drink water from a bottle in two ways,
1.Without touching mouth as in holding it upwards and drinking.
2.By touching lips n mouth to bottle and drinking just like small children’s do.
what can we say to tell a person that we have touched our mouth???
I hope u understood my question as I’m not able to explain it properly..
tanvir
I am not too sure what you mean but…. babies suck
on a bottle. If i drink from a bottle I put my lips on it – we don’t have a special word for this!
To tell someone, I would just say my lips touched the bottle.
Ronnie
Very friendly explanation rather than Inglo-link.:)
Adrian

Onto = on top
Ronnie

Ronnie
“What does he do in the afternoon?” It is right?..Why do I have to use “do” in this question, I am really confuse. Can you explain this to me? Thanks!
Evelyne
If you just say what does he in the afternoon – it makes no sense!
What does he eat/drink/say in the afternoon – you need a verb in the sentence!
Ronnie
Hi,can i use didn’t saw in a sentence or didn’t see is the correct one?
May
Didn’t see. Didn’t is past tense so you don’t need 2 past tense verbs!!!
Ronnie
thank you so much Ronnie thank you kindly you are good teacher your studint in kurdistan
hunar

Hello! Teacher Ronnie.
I’m from Brazil. I would like know about the between differences “like and as” in other words, when can I to use like and as, ie, which situations?
thank you so much and congratulations for the lessons!!
abreu73
LIKE
The structure of the sentence is usually: VERB + LIKE + NOUN / PRONOUN.
He speaks like a native speaker.
She looks like a supermodel.
AS
The structure of the sentence is usually: AS + SUBJECT + VERB.
Nobody sings as she does.
They went to the party as they were.
It is very common in American English to use LIKE instead of AS. However, it is generally considered informal to use it in this way.
We play football like champions do.
Ronnie
hi mam ronie
i want to ask about somehow, anyhow, weither, either, how to use them in a conversation?

I have one question here.
I saw the one shampoo product, the information wrote is “Did you know?Damaged hair is more prone to falling.”
why is did but not do?i’m very confused about it.Hope you can help, thank you:)
charis
You are correct……it should be “Do you know”!
Ronnie
Hi Teacher Ronnie, it’s me again!
I have one more a question. Ok!
The word “HOW” can I to use only at the beginning of sentences?
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
abreu73
Yes, most times we use it at the beginning. How are you? How is your mom? How is the steak? How do I get there? It is the same as the other wh questions = who what when where why + how!
Ronnie
I am fairly impressed with this site, and im glad i found it. I am currently living in Peru and am trying to teach kids some basic English, and one student asked me to talk about did and that, so this is great. Also, and just curious why was “it” excluded, like it did or it didn’t?
Fernando
I am allergic to “it”! Ahahah just kidding… I forgot “it”!
Ronnie
thank you very much teacher Ronnie
Do you is BRILLIANT!!
abreu73

Which one of the following sentences is correct?
1) Do John and Sally want to go?
2) Does John and sally want to go?
Jay
What do you think is correct?
Ronnie
I think ‘Do’ because John and sally are more than one person. Am I right ma’am?
Anuar Safian
I think correct is #1
RRP07
I miss word “IT” in the video. There is used “does”.
majsa
Where should we use done in a sentences.
Badi
hi teacher ..
I want ask for you what is difference between (wh + be and
wh + do)
When we use( verb to be .verb to do ) with the question .
thanks for you
noormooon22
Be + adjective/noun. Where is he? Are you hungry?
Do + verb. What does he like? Who does she like?
Ronnie
In understanding test, one of the question I choose ‘does’ and the answer is wrong and the right answer is stated below:
She doesn’t like him, because he is very mean to her.
I confused because it seem have a contradiction. Someone does not like somebody because it very mean? Perhaps you can explain more.
Anuar Safian
Mean = not nice.
If someone is mean to you, they are not nice to you so you don’t like that person!
Ronnie
I’d like to ask about “Do & Does”.
How to use “Do & Does” with subject OUR?
Thanks
Wong
With (our) you must use a noun, so it will depend if the noun is singular or plural!
Singular noun use does. Our brother does his homework.
Plural noun use do. Our parents do the taxes.
Ronnie
Thanks for reply
If asking a question? For example, How does/do our service?
Use DO or Does?
Wong
i’m confused with this form “let god do the rest” i’m often hear this one. my question is why “God” use “do” why not use “does”? looking forward for your answer
Hany
Dear professor:
I want to know when we must use the auxiliary do-does in the interrogative form, with the verbs to have and toe.
María Celina Rusca
We use do/does with a regular verb.
Do you like pizza?
Does he have a job?
With a modal verb or to be verb, we do not use do/does!
Are you sick?
Is he funny?
Should we go now?
Ronnie
I want to know what can we use with the subjective IT, DO/ Does,
Because some teachers teach” we use does with 3rd person singular means he, she, it and any single noun..
Please strive to reform me..
Muneeb Khan
It + does.
Ronnie
This question will help lots of people. Is it a rule not to use plural after DO/DOES/DID? Example: He doesn’t LIKE. They don’t LIKE. He knows -> He doesn’t KNOW.
Son
Thank you very much. Its really helpful.

I can’t understand when DO uses in positive sentenses like “He does need help” instead “He needs help”. What is the difference?
Alex
“He needs help” is a regular sentence.
“He does need help” we use to emphasize (make stronger/clearer) the fact. We can use it if the listener did not understand the answer.
Ex…. A)Does he need help?
B)Yes, he needs help.
A)What? I didn’t hear you.
B)I said, He DOES need help!
Ronnie

Hi Ronnie! Here’s one very interesting question I guess! But I really need you to answer me, please!!!!! I noticed that Americans use “don’t” with it and he very often!!! in spoken English, even in the songs! For example: … and even forever don’t seem like long enough … or he don’t know what to do!!! Thus the question is: how often do you use it in your life and maybe you have some kinda rules in your spoken language when you can use it or not? Or maybe it just happens automatically when somebody speak and doesn’t depend on any “spoken rules”. Thank you and I’m very looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards!

Thank you Mam Ronnie.
sergioopoc
Mr. Rajkumar, “don’t” and “doesn’t are both negative in the sentence. The difference is the first sentence is first person singular, and second is third person singular.
sergioopoc
Harsha, both sentence are correct. “Has” is the third person singular of the present tense “have”. In the first sentence “does have” means you want to emphasize something.
sergioopoc

Recently I read on a language website about how a student was confused about when to use do after who in questions, as someone had told him we can’t use do/does/did after who. I don’t know who that ‘someone’ was, but they had obviously got a bit confused themselves. Yes, there are times when we don’t use do/does/did after who (and some other question words), but it is really the exception rather than the rule.
Read about using auxiliary do/does/did in questions, and do a couple of exercises.
Remember, there are two types of question:
- Yes / No questions, also known as closed questions.
- Question word or wh-word questions, also known as open questions.
Yes / No questions
The verb to be has its own system, based on inverting the subject and the verb, but as it doesn’t involve the do auxiliary, we’ll not bother with that here. With all other verbs, the basic way to make a question is to invert the subject and auxiliary:
- She is going to the party — present continuous
Is she going to the party? - He had seen her lately. — present perfect
Had he seen her lately? - She would go again. — modal
Would she go again
But with present simple and past simple there is no auxiliary in the positive sentence to invert, so we have to add one — do, does or did.
- They speak Spanish.
Do they speak Spanish? - She likes playing golf
Does she like playing golf? - He got an invitation
Did he get an invitation?
Wh-word questions
Again we invert the subject and auxiliary, but this time we add a wh-word at the beginning of the sentence.
- She is making something. — present continuous
What is she making? - He has been somewhere. — present perfect
Where has he been?
- He would like to talk to somebody. — modal
Who would he like to talk to?
And again, as there’s no auxiliary in the present simple and past simple positive statements, we have to add one in the question.
- They want to do something.
What do they want to do? - She likes somebody.
Who does she like? - He saw something moving.
What did he see moving?
QASI
Question formation can cause problems for a lot of students, but there is an easy way to remember what happens — the mnemonic QASI (pronounced like the English word quasi — meaning almost).
- Q — question word
- A — auxiliary
- S — subject
- I — infinitive
Verb would perhaps be a better description than infinitive, but QASV isn’t quite so easy to say.
Now look at this table and see how the word order follows the QASI pattern. This shows the standard question structure for verbs other than be, although as we don’t have a question word in Yes/No questions we only have ASI.
Q | A | S | I | |||
Question word |
Auxiliary | Subject | Infinitive | the rest of the sentence
yes / no questions (closed) |
simple | — | Did | you | get | an invitation? |
continuous | — | Are | you | going | to the party?
perfect | — | Had | he | seen | her lately?
modal | — | Would | she | go | again?
wh-word questions (open) |
simple | Who | did | you | see | at the party? |
continuous | What | has | he | directed | lately?
perfect | Where | have | you | put | the coffee?
modal | When | could | she | finish | it? |
Now in all the previous examples, the wh-word referred to the object or an adverbial. But what about when who/what etc refers to the subject?
Random Idea English
http://random-idea-english.blogspot.com
Wh-word referring to the subject
Now the wh-word simply replaces the subject, so there is no inversion
- Something is annoying him. — present continuous
What is annoying him? - Somebody has turned out the light. — present perfect
Who has turned out the light? - Somebody would like to talk to you. — modal
Who would like to talk to you?
And what about present simple and past simple?
- Somebody loves her.
Who loves her? - Somebody saw you at the party.
Who saw you at the party?
That sounds just fine; we don’t need to add anything, because there is no inversion. So the exception to QASI and the rule about adding do/does/did to simple tense questions, is that when the wh-word refers to the subject, we don’t add an auxiliary. In practice this mainly happens with who, what and which. But remember, this is the exception rather than the rule. So now we have a different table.
Question word = subject |
Auxiliary | Verb | Object | the rest of the sentence
simple | Who | — | phones | you | every day? |
What | — | annoys | you | most? | |
Which of these | — | takes | your fancy?
Who | — | invited | you | to the party?
What | — | took | you | so long? | |
Which of them | — | told | you | that?
continuous | Who | is | taking | him | to school? |
perfect | What | has | annoyed | him | so much? |
modal | Which of these | would | suit | you | best? |
Random Idea English
http://random-idea-english.blogspot.com
To sum up
- Yes / No questions — invert subject and auxiliary. In simple tenses add the auxiliary do/does/did
- Wh-questions when the wh-word refers to the object or an adverbial. Use the QASI formula. In simple tenses add the auxiliary do/does/did
- Wh-questions when the wh-word refers to the subject — simply put the wh-word in normal subject position before the verb or auxiliary. In simple tenses don’t add anything
Emphatic do — the exception to the exception.
Sometimes we want to add emphasis, for example if we’re getting a bit impatient or annoyed, and we do this by putting extra stress on the auxiliary.
- Well, who is taking him to school, if not you?
- So what has annoyed him then?
- If you don’t like that one, which of these would suit you?
But in simple tenses where the wh-word refers to the subject, there is no auxiliary, so we need to add ’emphatic do/did‘ and stress it.
- If it’s not David, who does phone you every day then?
- What does annoy you then? Nothing? I don’t believe you.
- Then who did invite you to the party if Mandy didn’t?
- If it wasn’t the traffic, what did take you so long?
- If Peter didn’t, which of them did tell you?
You can read more about emphatic do and other auxiliaries at the link below.

Practice
Exercise 1 — Make wh-word questions.
EG. | Somebody spoke to her. Who spoke to her? |

|
2. | He told somebody about his plans ? |
|
3. | They make something themselves. ? |

|
14. | Somewhere suits her best. ? |
|
15. | Some wine goes with eggs. (add emphasis) ? |
Random Idea English
http://random-idea-english.blogspot.com
Exercise 2 — Change these indirect questions into direct questions. Remember to change the tenses where necessary, and the pronouns. Where it says really, use emphatic do.
She asked him … | ||
EG. | … who he had spoken to. Who did you speak to? |
|
1. | … what he wanted for supper. ? |
|
2. | … how he liked his eggs cooked. ? |
|
3. | … who had told him about the . ? |
|
4. | … if he wanted to go for a walk. ? |
|
5. | … which shirt he liked best. ? |
|
6. | … which of his brothers had given him the present. ? |
|
7. | … who had phoned earlier ? |
|

14. | … if he thought it would rain. ? |
|
15. | … where he had put the car keys. ? |
|
16. | … what had really happened to his brother that night. ? |
|
17. | … when he wanted to eat. ? |
|
18. | … who had said life was going to be a bed of roses. ? |
|
19. | … if he had told his parents about the change of plans. ? |
|
20. | … who really annoys him at work. ? |
Remember with a song.
You can use these song titles to help you remember the rules
- who/what = object — with auxiliary do
Who do you love — Bo Diddley, The Doors
What do you want from me — Pink Floyd - who/what = subject — without auxiliary do
Who loves you — The Four Seasons
What makes you beautiful — One Direction
See if you can find any more songs whose titles start with who or what. If you do, why not tell us in the Comments below?
What about whom?
There are some rather silly people on the Internet, including some who should know better, who insist that Bo Diddley’s song should be called Whom do you love?. Hardly anybody uses whom at the beginning of a question like this, and most of us consider
it to be extremely formal, and rather unnatural and out of place in normal conversation (or in a pop song).
The only time you really need to use whom is after a preposition, and you can usually avoid this by putting the preposition to the end. Who did you write to? is much more natural than To whom did you write?, which sounds excessively formal.
You can read more about when to use whom at the link below.

Answers
Hi students, it’s Shayna, your teacher from espressoenglish.net, and today, I want to answer a really interesting question. First of all, if you are here with me watching live, then please like this video so that I know that you are in my class.
Well, a student asked me when we use the auxiliary verb “do” in the positive. Let me explain.
Normally, in English when we’re talking about, say, the present simple, we form the sentences like this:
- “They study,” in the positive.
- “They don’t study,” in the negative.
- When asking a question, we ask, “Do they study?”
Normally, we use the auxiliary verb “do” and “don’t” only in the negative and in the questions, but my student asked … She said, “Sometimes, I see people say, ‘They do study’ using the auxiliary verb in the positive.” When would we say it like this? Well, there actually is an answer for this.
Remember, normally, we don’t use “do” in the positive, only in the negative and in the question. Sometimes, we do say a sentence like, “They do study.” We say it like this when we want to give extra emphasis to the positive, usually after a corresponding negative sentence. Let me give you an example to make it clearer.
Let’s say that I have some students, and a lot of my students didn’t pass a test, and I’m talking about this situation with another teacher. The other teacher says, “Well, the problem is they don’t study.” I could respond, arguing with this other teacher or disagreeing with her, “They do study. The problem is that the test is too hard.”
Okay, so the other teacher expressed a negative opinion, “They don’t study,” and to make a contrast with her negative opinion, I gave a positive one. “They do study,” so instead of just saying, “They study,” I added the word “do” for extra emphasis.
You’ll see this a lot in arguments and disagreements, for example, if you have a boyfriend and a girlfriend who are having an argument, and the girlfriend might say, “You don’t care about my feelings.” The boyfriend might respond, “I do care” in order to emphasize that positive statement in contrast with her negative statement.
Sometimes, you’ll even see one person making both a negative and then a positive statement using “don’t” in the negative and then “do” to emphasize the contrast with the positive. Let me give you an example for that.
Let’s imagine that I’m teaching an English class which ends at 4 o’clock, but after the class, I’m going to have a review session for test, but the review session is optional. It’s not required. This students can choose if they want to stay for the review session or just leave at 4 o’clock at the end of the class.
At 4 o’clock, I might say something like this, “If you don’t want to stay for the review session, then you can leave now. If you do want to stay, then we’ll take a five-minute break and then start the review.”
So I made one negative statement. “If you don’t want to stay, you can leave.” Then I made one positive statement using “do” for extra emphasis. “If you do want to stay for the review, then we’ll start in five minutes.” Okay?
Remember, normally in English, we do not use “do” in the positive. We would just say, “They study,” but when we want to give extra emphasis to the positive after making a negative statement or after someone else makes a negative statement, then we can add the auxiliary verb “do” for extra emphasis.

Present Simple vs. Present Continuous
- I speak English.
- I am speaking English.
What is the difference?
I speak English – is in the Present Simple tense
I am speaking English – is in the Present Continuous tense
When do we use the Present Simple and when do we use the Present Continuous?
Let’s look at each one…
PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE
We use the present simple tense:
1. For facts or things that are always true or generally true.
- Whales live in the ocean.
(This is a fact, this is always true) - A dog has four legs.
(This is generally true, unfortunately some dogs have three legs or less) - It rains a lot in winter.
(Yes, this is generally true) - Water boils at 100º Celsius.
(This is a fact, just like the fact that water freezes at 0º Celsius)
The present simple tense is also used…
2. For regular habits or repeated actions
These are often daily routines and they happen always, often, generally, every week, etc.
- I brush my teeth three times a day.
- I read in bed every night.
- He walks to school every day.
- She goes to the gym after work.
- I study for two hours every evening.
Common time expressions used with the present simple tense are:
- always, often, generally, normally, usually, sometimes, never …
- every day, every week, every year…
(note the time word is in single form, day, not days.) - once a day, twice a week, three times a month…
(then the rest are four times, five times etc. then A and the time period, a month, a year, a century) - in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, at night
(we don’t say in the night) - on Mondays, on Fridays…
(when the day is in plural it refers to all Mondays, all Fridays)
PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
We use the present continuous tense:
1. An action happening right now at the moment of speaking.
When somebody is doing something right now or something is happening right now.
- I am teaching an English lesson. (Yes, that is what is happening right now)
- You are watching a video.
- Steve is washing his hair.
- She is taking her dog for a walk.
- Please be quiet, the baby is sleeping.
- It is snowing right now.
- Listen! The birds are singing.
You can see that these actions are happening right now and they are temporary actions, normally for a short period of time.
2. To talk about something that is happening AROUND the time of speaking but not necessarily at that exact moment.
This action is in progress and hasn’t finished.
- I am reading a great book.
(It doesn’t necessarily mean that I am reading a book right at this moment. It refers to this moment of my life. I have started reading this book and I haven’t finished it)
- They are staying at a local hotel because the roof of their house was damaged during the storm.
(It doesn’t necessarily mean they are at the hotel right at this moment. Maybe they are at work right now or somewhere else. This situation is temporary.)
- Jack is learning Italian.
(It doesn’t necessarily mean he is learning the language right now at a desk with all of his language books. It refers to this moment of his life.)
Common time expressions used with the present continuous are:
- Now, right now, at the moment, still
NOTE: Sometimes the present continuous is called the present progressive in some workbooks or lessons.
Now let’s compare the two tenses together…
Present Simple vs Present Continuous
Here are the sentences from the beginning of this lesson.
- I speak English
- I am speaking
We say I speak English, because it is a fact. I generally speak English. So we use the Present Simple tense.
We say I am speaking English because it refers to what I am doing now. It is a temporary action because in a moment I might start speaking in Spanish. So we use the Present Continuous.
Let’s compare more sentences:
- I live in England.
We use the Present Simple for things that don’t change for a long time. I plan to live in England for a long time and I don’t plan to change soon. It is more or less permanent. But if I say:
- I am living in London at the moment.
I used the present continuous because this situation is temporary. Next month I plan to live in a different city.
Another example:
- It rains a lot in winter.
We use the present simple because this is a fact or is generally true.
- It is raining right now.
We use the present continuous because we are talking about an action that is happening right now. It is in progress. It will not continue forever, it is temporary. Tomorrow it might be sunny.
Compare these two sentences:
- He is biting his nails because he is nervous.
- He always bites his nails when he’s nervous.
The first sentence shows the action that is happening now… he is biting his nails right now.
The second sentence uses the present simple because it is talking about his habit, sometime that he does when he is nervous. Notice how we use the present simple tense with the adverb of frequency, always.
Another example:
- He teaches at a local school.
That is what he does for a job from Monday to Friday every week. This is his routine.
- He is teaching business at the local school this week.
It is possibly a temporary job he has this week because next week he will return to his normal job or maybe he will teach at another school next week.
Affirmative, Negative, Questions
Let’s compare the present simple and present continuous in affirmative sentences, negative sentences and in questions.
Here are two affirmative sentences:
- I eat cereal every day. (This is my habit, my routine)
- I am eating cereal right now. (This is an action happening now)
Let’s look at the negative form:
- I do not eat cereal every day. (No, sometimes I have pancakes for breakfast)
- I am not eating cereal right now. (No, I am eating broccoli)
We use DO NOT or DOES NOT to make negative sentences in the present simple. Remember, we can use the contractions don’t and doesn’t.
We add NOT between to be and the verb to make negative sentences in the present continuous.
And making questions:
- Do you eat cereal every day? (Is this your habit or routine?)
- Are you eating cereal right now? (Is this what you are doing right now?)
We use DO or DOES to make questions in the present simple tense.
We change the order of the subject (pronoun) and the conjugation of the verb To Be when making questions in the present continuous tense.
Questions – Same verbs, different meanings
Questions can have the same verb but its meaning changes depending on if the question is in the present simple or present continuous. For example:
- What do you do? = What is your job?
- What are you doing? = What (action) are you doing at the moment?
- What do you read? = What type of books do you like to read?
- What are you reading? = What is the name of the book you are reading right now?
