Wordle, the daily word guessing game, is taking Twitter, the world, and my relationship by storm.

If you haven’t heard of it—how?—the rules are simple. Every day there’s a new five-letter word (a Wordle.) You get six attempts to guess it, and after each one the color of the tiles change to tell you whether a letter was in the word and in the right place (green), in the word but not in the right place (yellow), or not in the word (gray.)

These limitations are what make Wordle so fun. Everyone in the world (and, in particular, in my house) is attempting to guess the same word in the fewest number of guesses. What’s clever is you can share your progress after you succeed—but all the letters are disguised as colored blocks. So you can gloat without giving anything away.

But never let it be said there’s a game that can’t be beaten (or, according to my girlfriend, ruined) with a bit of research, analysis, and time. So, if you’ve ever wondered what the best strategy is for winning at Wordle, let’s break it down.

Letter Distribution in the English Language

Letter frequency analysis is the study of how often and where letters occur in words. It’s pretty foundational to cryptography, because if you have to decode a secret message like we’re kind of doing with Wordle, it’s useful to know that you are more likely to see an E than a Q.

While exact letter frequency distribution changes based on the source text, the most common letters don’t really change.

Peter Norvig, director of research at Google, used the data from Google Books to come up with this list of the top 12 most common letters in the English language:

There’s one issue with this list for us Wordlers, though. It’s based on a natural-language source text, which means the word the kind of messes things up for us. The is by far the most common word in the English language, representing 7.14 percent of all words in the Google Books source text, followed by of (4.16 percent), and (3.04 percent), and to (2.6 percent). This means the position of T and H in the list are higher than they should be.

Another option is to just look at the distribution of letters in dictionary words. An analysis of the Concise Oxford Dictionary (9th Edition, 1995) found the 12 most common letters were:

While this list isn’t perfect either, since it uses an almost-20-year-old British English dictionary as its source, between the two we can use our judgment and creativity to come up with great Wordle starting words.

The Best Words to Start With

There are a couple of things we have to keep in mind when coming up with our Wordle starting words:

Each guess had to be an actual five-letter word.
Each guess does not have to include letters that you know are in the Wordle.
Overall letter frequency doesn’t mean each letter is likely to occur in the same words. Neither ETAOI or EARIO are words, despite being the most common letters on each list in descending frequency order.
This is a game and meant to be fun.

So, the first word has to be five letters, and we want it to pull from the most common, say, eight letters. That means we’re working from E, T, A, O, I, N, S, and R (top eight are actually the same on both lists.)

Some good options are:

NOTES

But you should feel free to come up with your own.

Then for the second guess, we want to tick off any remaining letters in the top 10 (with a bit of judgment as to what they are). This means a few good options are:

If you start with NOTES, ACRID
If you start with RESIN, LOATH
If you start with TARES, CHINO
If you start with SENOR, DUCAT

Again, you should make your own here. I’d suggest using a site like Anagram Scramble to help. (I couldn’t have written this article without it.)

After those two guesses, you should have at least a few letters and be ready to start guessing based on the actual Wordle—or, as my girlfriend calls it, “playing properly.”

If This Makes It Too Easy: Hard Mode

A word of warning. If playing like this takes the fun out of things (and reliably being able to guess most words by your fourth guess can, I suppose), you should try Hard Mode.

Tap the Settings icon and then enable Hard Mode. This forces you to use any revealed letters in your subsequent guesses.

Obviously, you should still start with a sensible first guess. But Hard Mode stops you from playing letter frequency words the whole way down.

Other Wordle Tips and Tricks

Understanding letter frequencies helps a lot, but there are a few other things you should bear in mind:

Despite being hosted on a UK domain, Wordle is based on American English. If you live in Ireland (like I do), this means that six-letter-words that end in -OUR can crop up as five-letter-words that end in -OR.
Letters can, and often do, appear twice in words.
From this New York Times article, we know that developer Josh Wardle used words his wife recognized to create the list. Each one will only appear once, but you should know it.
Remember all the tips from Scrabble, like Q’s need U’s, and Z’s are uncommon. As fun as Wordle is, it’s just another word game and all the usual bits of advice apply.

Best Wordle start words: Most common letters

Before we dive into the list of the words, let’s break down the science behind it.

You don’t have to be a genius to realize that it’s a good idea to use letters that occur more frequently in English. For example, you’re more likely to find an “A” in the word than a “Z.”

In a research paper on English Letter Frequency Counts (opens in new tab), Peter Norvig, director of research at Google, analyzed the data from Google Books to put together a list of most commonly used letters in the English language. His findings concluded that “E”, “T” and “A” were the top three, while “J”, “Q” and “Z” were the least common.

However, that list is based on words in general, rather than Wordle answers — so to really find out which letters feature most frequently in the game, you’d need to analyze them all.

Fortunately, that’s easy to do. Because Wordle’s answers are all freely available in the website’s HTML code, it’s pretty simple to download them, then do a bit of number crunching. This is the list of most most frequently used letters that you get when you do that:

Note that the list above is based on correct Wordle answers, rather than Wordle words; the game accepts some 12,000-plus words as guesses, but only 2,309 are valid solutions.

That’s interesting, then, but it’s just the appetizer for the best Wordle start word main course to follow…

Best Wordle start words

What are the best Wordle start words?

Several people have attempted to use math to determine the best Wordle start words.

One of them was programmer and game designer Tyler Glaiel (opens in new tab), who assigned each letter in Wordle’s 12,972 possible guesses a score of 0, 1 or 2, based on whether it is included in one of the 2,309 answers or not, and whether it is in the right place.

After checking all 12,972 words, the algorithm determined that the best starting options are:

ROATE
RAISE

For reasons that are too complex to go into here, Glaiel concludes that ROATE is the best Wordle start word if you want to rule out possible answers as quickly as possible.

However, because ROATE doesn’t actually feature in Wordle’s possible answers list itself, you’ll never get a 1/6 with it. For that reason, Glaiel recommends starting with RAISE.

Programmer Bertrand Fan took a similar approach (opens in new tab) and unsurprisingly came up with a very similar list:

Given that the top three don’t feature in Wordle’s possible answers list, that would make STARE the statistically best Wordle start word, based on Fan’s analysis at least.

Coincidentally, Stare is the word independently picked by some of the Tom’s Guide team months ago, without having seen that research, so that’s the one we’d go for.

That decision was instead based on common sense; after all, S is the most common first letter among Wordle answers, A is the most common third letter and E the most common fifth letter. T and R, meanwhile, are the two most common consonants overall in the game.

So there you have it — for the Tom’s Guide team at least, the best Wordle start word is STARE.

Though, a pair of MIT researchers (opens in new tab) have their own pick: SALET (a light medieval helmet). That also gives you five of the top 10 letters, but we’re not as keen on it as STARE — as R is the third-most-used letter, and L is the sixth-most-used. A good alternate for sure.

The best Wordle start word according to WordleBot

The NYT’s excellent WordleBot tool has its own list of the best Wordle start words — and it should know, given it’s made by the people who now run Wordle.

The math behind it is based on how many of Wordle’s 2,309 solutions are left, on average, after you play it, plus the average number of steps needed to solve it and a couple of other metrics. And by that measure, the best Wordle start word is apparently CRANE.

That’s surprising to me — not least because STARE actually fares better in terms of average number of solutions, scoring 71.8 to CRANE’s 78.7. But overall WordleBot awards CRANE a score of 99/100 and STARE only 97, and presumably it’s better at math than I am, it being a computer and all that.

STARE is at number 12 in this list — so pretty good, if not quite the best.

Vowels and Wordle

Should your Wordle start word have lots of vowels?

Some people swear by playing the likes of ADIEU, AUDIO, ABOUT, CANOE or OUIJA, as they let you use up three or four vowels at the start.

This can be a good alternative approach, as (almost) every Wordle answer has at least one vowel so it makes sense to identify it as soon as possible. But I wouldn’t personally go down that route. ADIEU is not a Wordle answer, so you’ll never get a 1/6 with that. AUDIO is decent, but it doesn’t contain an E — which is not just the most common vowel but also the most common letter in the game. Ditto ABOUT.

CANOE isn’t bad, but C and N are nowhere near as common as S, T or R when it comes to consonants, so what you gain in one aspect you lose in the other. And OUIJA is just a silly suggestion: it doesn’t have an E but it does have a J, which is the second least likely letter to feature in the game at all.

However, vowels are very important in the game in general, so consider them strongly when thinking of a second word. Speaking of which…

Which you choose will obviously depend on what your first word was, as you won’t want to repeat any letters you’ve already used. But if I assume you’re following this advice (you’re going to do so, right) and using STARE as your Wordle start word, I’d recommend PHONY, COULD or DOING as good second options.

PHONY is a statistically better option as a second word, because Y is one of the most frequent fifth letters. However, COULD and DOING both use two vowels, and playing your vowels early is always a good strategy, as described above.

It should be easy to answer the question, “What is the Beat Generation?” or “Who were the Beats?” but actually it is rather difficult. The most basic answer is: The Beat Generation was a literary movement that began in the 1940s and entered the public consciousness in the 1950s. It was based around the social and creative circle of Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg.

That answer is not perfect but it is a good starting point. In this article, I will try to use the Beat writers’ own words to explain who and what they were.

The Simple Answer – Who were the Beats?

Some people will tell you that the Beat Generation was indeed a group of three writers: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William S. Burroughs. Certainly, they were the most famous of the Beat writers, and most people today look back on them as – at the very least – the center of the movement.

When John Clellon Holmes, in his 1952 essay on the Beat Generation, said “Any attempt to label an entire generation is unrewarding,” and he was quite right. It is absurd to label three men as a generation unto themselves. When you begin to look at the so-called second-generation Beats and other associated figures, you realize that there was no shared philosophy, style, or aim.

Still, their work is taken as representative of the thoughts and style of their peers, as well as in a more extended net to encompass their whole generation. It was these three men who made the word “Beat” famous and who popularized a new style of writing with their explosive literature of the late fifties.

Was the Beat Generation a Literary, Cultural, or Social Movement?

Above, I referred to the Beat Generation as writers and this suggests that the Beat Generation was purely a literary movement. The name “Beat Generation” expands that beyond the three men to a wider group – perhaps even a whole generation of young people in the 1950s.

This begs the question: Were all young people in the late fifties part of the Beat Generation, or did you have to be an artist? That is to say, was the Beat Generation a purely literary movement, or a wider cultural phenomenon, or was it a social thing – in other words, the friends of these three writers?

The most obvious answer is that the Beat Generation was simply a literary movement, with Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Kerouac at the center, and thus the Beats were writers who published stories during a certain time frame in history, on certain themes and with a certain style.

This seems to be confirmed by something that Allen Ginsberg said in 1958:

the whole scene is strictly a literary scene, basically, with technical literary practical meanings (shifts in prosody of verse and experiments and progress in prose forms) […] most of the sociological generalizations and middleclass publicity discussions (“What does beat mean? is it positive or negative? why do they steal hubcaps?) are false issues created by journalistic minds, hung up with meaningless habitual categories that just do not fit and never have been the concern of artistic (or spiritual) creation, i.e. square.

Yet elsewhere he seemed to contradict this stance, saying:

There is not beat poetry, or a beat novel, or beat painting. Beat is a poetic conception, an attitude toward the world. But, yes, we have done theater…

If it was more than a literary movement and if we are to view the Beat Generation as a group of people then it limits us to time and events, rather than themes and styles. It rules out later writers and artists who are often called “Beat.” We are also forced into considering people who were privy to the action, but who didn’t necessarily consider themselves “Beat” or even part of “the New Vision,” (a term Kerouac and Ginsberg used in the 1940s to describe their literary ambitions) but who simply kept in the same circles. If indeed the Beats were a generation, then in considering them we are considering millions of people who probably led lives diametrically opposed to those we consider “Beat”…

Therefore, perhaps it is most fitting to label as the Beat Generation a group of writers and thinkers surrounding Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs during the forties and fifties. The problem there, though, is that we are admitting that one could be Beat without having been a part of the Beat Generation by virtue of age or location.

Which then begs the question:

What is Beat?

In 1945, young Kerouac and Ginsberg were heavily influenced by the Romantics, and began debating something called “the New Vision”, inspired by William Butler Yeats’ A Vision. At the time, both Ginsberg and Kerouac were exploring new areas of literature and life, and began formulating some of the ideas that are now often associated with the Beat Generation.

Ginsberg described their point of view:

Everybody [is] lost in a dream world of their own making. That was the basis of the Beat Generation. That was the primary perception. The idea of transience of phenomenon – the poignant Kewpie-doll dearness of personages vanishing in time. Not a morbid interest in death but a realization of the mortal turn.

It seems that being Beat – even before the term was first used – meant being an outsider. It meant thinking differently and acting differently. There is a popular notion that Beat is a byword for “rebellion,” and that these were angry young men and women out to spite society. Again, Allen Ginsberg disagreed:

You know there is a notion that the Beat Generation was rebellious. I would say that the mainstream culture was rebellious against nature and the Beat Generation was much more obedient to human nature and trying to propose some value and some openness and generosity and respect for nature and each other, some sacred sense of existence, so I wouldn’t quite call it quite rebellion

There are varying reports on the coining of the phrase “Beat Generation” but regardless of which story is accurate, the meaning of the word “Beat” is rarely debated. It was probably Herbert Huncke who first used the word “Beat” in the presence of Kerouac and co, and he used it to describe himself. He believed he was beat.

Huncke was an odd figure of curiosity and near worship for Kerouac’s Columbia group of friends and he was influential among them. His use of the word caught on and came to describe these disaffected writers, artists, bohemians and criminals. These outsiders shared a sense of dissatisfaction with the world, yet strove not to change it, but to carve out their own little space in the face of crushing conformity.

Could the Beat Generation have been Spiritual?

Jack Kerouac was keen to steer the definition away from criminality and towards religiosity. As the unwilling spokesman of the Beat Generation in the late fifties, he found himself tasked with writing various articles about the Beats and answering questions from numerous journalists. In 1959 he was asked by the American College Dictionary editors to define “Beat Generation” and he wrote this:

members of the generation that came of age after World War II-Korean War who join in a mystic-disaffiliation and material-simplicity values, supposedly as a result of Cold War disillusionment. Coined by JK.

Elsewhere, he was keen to tie the meaning of the word to “beatific,” meaning a sort of holy bliss in Christian theology.

Conclusion

So what was the Beat Generation? Well, that depends on who you ask. Some would say that it was a movement begun in the 1940s, popularized in the 1950s, and which morphed into the hippies of the 1960s. Others would say that the Beat flag still flies and that anyone writing confessional poetry in the 21st century is as Beat as Ginsberg. I’ve heard people included Diane di Prima, Charles Bukowski, and Hunter S. Thompson as Beat, second wave Beat, and post-Beat.

Perhaps Amiri Baraka said it best:

The so-called Beat Generation was a whole bunch of people, of all different nationalities, who came to the conclusion that society sucked.

In general, every one of you has a basic metronome and rhythm built inside of them. You’re heart. It is constantly on beat and you don’t even have to think about it.

There are 4 beats in a bar. A beat is a moment of time. In hip hop, numbers can be used to represent beats.

Go ahead and count to 4 right now… 1-2-3-4. BOOM you just counted out a bar.

A bar is the representation of a period of time in the song. Every bar has 4 beats in rap. 1-2-3-4. That is one bar. Then it repeats again and starts a new bar.

This continues throughout the entire song. Some instrumental tracks are faster and some are slower, but you can always deconstruct it by counting to 4.

This is important because this is the backbone of how to rap to a beat. So how many beats in a bar of rap? FOUR.

How Many Beats In A Bar Of Trap?

There are still four beats in one bar of trap music. It is just that the types of drums are placed on different beats. In trap, the snare usually only lands on the three beat.

BUT you still have to count to four. It’s not a different time signature. The snare just falls in different places.

How Do I Know When To Count 1-2-3-4?

Rap beats are made of drums. Kicks and snares.

In hip hop, drum sounds fall on each beat. Kicks are softer, quieter, and lower pitched drums. The land on the 1 and 3 beats. Snares are sharper, louder and higher pitch (Think of a clap sound) drums. They fall on the 2 and 4 beats.

This is universal throughout hip hop as that’s what makes the hip hop sound. That’s the basic structure of all rap music. Obviously there are variations but this is where it all starts. So when you count 1-2-3-4. It would be kick-snare-kick-snare. Repeat.

How Many Bars In A Song?

Generally in rap, instrumental tracks start with a 4 to 8 bar intro and sometimes starts with a chorus. But usually it doesn’t start with rapping right off the bat. After the intro, rap songs usually go into the verse. Most of the time verses are 16 bars. Which mean 16 counts of 4.

When someone says “write a sixteen”, they are referring to 16 bars. There are usually 2-4 verses in a complete song.

Here’s an example of 16 bars of rap. Usually what rappers do is show the end of the bar with a slash like this/

2. most raps are on the backs of my napkins and receipts/

3. I put passion into beats, establish inner peace/

4. Cuz for me it’s leaving scenery while travelling the streets/

5. and for now i’m limited by insufficient funds/

After the verse there are two ways you can get to the hook/chorus. Sometimes there is a bridge of 2 bars. So instead of going RIGHT from the verse into the chorus it gives you two bars of time to make the transition smoother.

There are usually 8 bars in a chorus. The majority of rap songs will have an 8 bar hook. Sometimes artists will do 4 bars and then repeat it to make up the 8 bars. You have total freedom within the framework here to do whatever you want.

Obviously this can be altered for whatever creative pursuits you like but the general structure of a complete sounding song is this. 4 bar intro – 16 bar verse – 8 bar chorus – 16 bar verse – 8 bar chorus – 16 bar verse – End.

Though this can change depending on the beat makers structure. Every rap song in existence can be broken down into bars. 1-2-3-4 repeated throughout the track.

What is 4/4 Time Signature In Rap

4 beats/4 bars. That is all my friend. This means full ideas are generally complete every 4 bars. Almost all major pop, rap, top 40 stuff is alllllllllll in this time signature of 4/4. There are many ways to be creative around the base structure. BUT this is the most basic, raw form of hip hop music, and where everything derived from.
