Or such behaviour is called «condescending» behaviour

Condescending? Duplicitous can also work to describe a narcissist.

This morning, I wanted to write: «The Times newspaper used to _____ great power.»
It is a word that sounds like «wheel.» It means to exercise.
I checked my dictionaries and the Web. I was unable to find it.
What word am I looking for?
Thank you

I am 76 years old.
I speak (more or less) only English.
And yet I did not remember the verb «to wield.»
As you young folks say, OMG!
A million thanks,
James

Ain’t English spelling great? The only use for a standard English dictionary to check you have spelt (or spelled! ) something right. Otherwise you have to drive yourself crazy looking under the alternatives — wheeled, wield, wealed, Weald. While the simplest of all — ‘weled’, or even ‘weeled’ go completely ignored, as far as I know?
Like the human appendix — annoying and overcomplicated but they come as part of the package!

The fact that I have helped you to find a right word is a complement to me, because I’m Russian and I speak more o less English (too )

Yes, it is.
I have just read that the Dutch are also trying to change the spellings of some of their words.

Many Russian students of English know more about English grammar and vocabulary than I ever will.
Thanks again!
P.S. To show you further proof of my ignorance, I assume that it must be very cold there in Siberia.

What word am I looking for? Try decipher the following:
((CZ18172612)⁺¹)=_____?
Edit; Gary S was very close, but here’s a hint…
If numbers equals letters, then…

It Is:
14 Mars or Mars 14
Because:
CZ = 4(26) + 1 = 41
And as per the explanation above, 18172612 = SRAM
Therefore, we got: 41 SRAM
After reversing it, we get Mars 14, or 14 Mars
As a conclusion:
I believe the word is «Pi», as March 14th is the National Pi Day

Here’s a guess:
DASRAM
Rationale:
It’s not a common English word, but Google says it’s a word, so I thought I would try it. I got this answer by applying the
⁺¹
to 1) each letter (i.e. C + 1 = D) and 2) each two-digit number as if it were a letter (i.e. 18 + 1 = 19 = S, 26 + 1 = 27 -> wraparound to 1 -> A).D = C + 1
A = Z + 1 (wraparound)
S = (18 = R) + 1
R = (17 = Q) + 1
A = (26 = Z) + 1 (wraparound)
M = (12 = L) + 1
