What will the word of god do for me

The first thing each and every Christian must fully realize is that the Holy Bible is truly the inspired and infallible Word of God.

There are many liberal Christians who are starting to question the validity and authenticity of the Bible. I will not use this article to debate the origins of the Bible, all of the authors who wrote the books, and how the different translations came into being. There are plenty of good books at your local Christian bookstore that deal with this topic very extensively.

After studying the Bible in its complete entirety – there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that all of the Bible is God-breathed – that all of it has come directly to us from God the Father through the Holy Spirit.

For those of you who believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible, and that all of it has truly come to us from God the Father.

I will use this article to give you some extremely powerful verses from Scripture to show you that not only did all of the Bible come direct to us from God the Father through the Holy Spirit to all of the authors who wrote all 66 books of the Bible – but I will also give you some powerful verses from the Bible showing you how powerful the actual words of the Bible really are, and how they can also help to change and transform you into the kind of person that God really wants you to become in Him.

The actual words of the Bible are anointed by the Holy Spirit Himself – and they have the full ability to completely change and transform you if you are willing to work with the divine truths that are contained in the actual words.

Jesus says in the Bible that you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. However, you first have to know what the real truth is before the truth can start to work to set you free.

This is why Kind David said we must meditate on the words of the Bible – so we can find out what their true meaning is and how all of these divine truths can apply to our daily lives. Meditating on the Bible means to think about, to chew on, to try and figure out the meaning of all of the different verses in the Bible.

Though the Book is long, God has made it as simple and easy as He possibly could. Think about this. There is only one Bible. In one Book, God has given us everything we need to know about Himself, His Son Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the basics of our salvation through His Son Jesus, how He wants us to live this life, the things that He wants us doing, and the things that He does not want us to be doing.

In this one Book are all the ways and commandments of our Lord, along with all the information we are ever going to need on what is awaiting all of us on the other side when we die and cross over – heaven for the saved and hell for the unsaved.

I believe the number one reason God created the human race was for intimate fellowship. Even to the amazement of the angels in heaven, God seems to have some type of special longing and love for the human race.

The fact that God would send His one and only Son Jesus down to our earth in the flesh to go through the worst form of physical death at the time He came, all just to bring us back to Himself, really does show us how much God really does love all of us.

The Bible tells us that the love that God has for all of us is like a “consuming fire.” These two words are showing us a love that is of maximum intensity. With this kind of intense, passionate love that God has for all of us, I believe He is trying to tell all of us one main thing – and that one main thing is that He is looking to enter into a one-on-one, personal, love relationship with each one of us.

Think about this – that the one and only all-powerful God of the entire universe is looking to make a direct, personal connection with you on an individual and unique basis.

If you really step back and look at the big picture and all the things that we see in this life – what is the one thing that most of us long for in this life? What is the one thing that will make you cry when you see this portrayed on the movie screens?

It is the longing for a true soul mate. It is the longing for a pure, true, and unconditional love from a person of the opposite sex. There is nothing that can satisfy the deeper longings of your soul the way that true love can. However, there is just one small catch with this scenario. Even though some of you may have found your true soul mates in this life, there is still one more thing that has not been met.

No matter how perfect you think your mate may be – your mate is still not perfect like God is, since the Bible tells us that all men and women have sinned and have fallen way short of the glory of our God. What this means is that no matter how good of a love relationship you may have with your mate, that person is still not capable of giving you a perfect love because that person is not perfect in their very nature and personality.

Thus, every single one of us still has that little hole in our soul that just cannot seem to be filled with anything else in our lives.

No matter how much money we have, no matter how many material possessions we have, and no matter how many loving children we have – there is still something missing and none of these things can completely fill that little hole that is in all of our souls.

God has purposely left a vacuum, a hole, and a void in each one of our souls when He created us. And the only thing that can fill this hole and void is God the Father Himself, His Son Jesus Christ, and His Holy Spirit.

There is absolutely nothing else on this earth that can fill that empty void. People are literally chasing after the wind trying to find anything and everything to fill that void – and no matter how many lovers they have, no matter how many marriages they enter into, and no matter how many toys they buy with the money they have – nothing they chase after in this life will fill that hole in their souls.

The only thing that will fill that hole in your soul is finding, and then entering into a true, personal, love relationship with God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. There is nothing else that will fill that void!

Since God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are totally perfect in Their actual natures and have no dark side to Their personalities, then They, and only They, are the only Ones who are capable of giving you a perfect, pure, and unconditional love that no one else can give you in this life.

This is why the Bible tells us that we will find a peace that will pass all human understanding once we have accepted Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior and have become truly born again. That peace we will find is the result of finding the one true Person who can fill that empty void that is on the inside of each and everyone of us – and that one Person is God Almighty Himself.

However, once you have found God through accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, there is now something you must do. You must now grow in the knowledge of God and grow in the personal relationship that He wants to establish with you.

And how do you start to grow in the personal relationship He wants to establish with you and grow in the knowledge that He wants you to have about Him? By diving head first into the Bible!

When two lovers first meet and fall in love with one another, the first thing they naturally and instinctively want to do is to learn as much as they can about one another.

How can you truly fall in love with another person unless you first seek to know everything you can about your lover, their past, where they have been, what they have been through, who are all of their friends and family, etc. Once you really fall into true love with someone, you will have a major hunger and desire to find out as much as you can about them and their past.

It’s the exact same way in our relationship with God. God obviously knows everything about each one of us since He is all-knowing, but we do not know everything about Him, His Son, or His Spirit. So the only possible way that we can learn all about God is to read and study from the Bible, since the Bible is the only Book that we have down here on this earth that will give us detailed information as to who the Three of Them really are.

If a true, born-again, Spirit-filled Christian is really in love with God, and really wants to deepen the personal relationship they have now established with Him – then the first thing that person will really want to do is to get into the Bible so that they can find out everything they possibly can about this awesome God of ours.

The more knowledge you gain about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit from studying the Bible – the stronger and deeper your personal relationship will become with the Three of Them.

As you will see in the Scripture verses listed below, there are several other incredible things that will start to occur in your life if you seek to study the Bible with the intentions on wanting to learn more about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in order to deepen your personal relationship Them.

I will break these Scripture verses down under their appropriate captions below so you can see how powerful the Word of God really is, and how it can help change and transform the quality of your life if you are willing to study, learn, and seek to apply the divine truths that are in this incredible Book.

Study these verses very, very carefully. These verses are showing you how powerful and anointed the Bible really is. Since all of the Bible comes direct to us from God the Father, you can completely trust and rely on that what you will read from the Bible will be 100% pure, solid, God-truth.

1. All of Scripture is Given to Us By Inspiration From God the Father

These first two verses will specifically tell us, without any other possible interpretation, that all of the Bible has been given to us by “inspiration of God” through holy men who were “moved by the Holy Spirit” to write what they wrote!

In other words – all of the words in the Bible have come direct to us from God the Father through the Holy Spirit. The specific authors of the Bible then wrote under the guidance, inspiration, and illumination of the Holy Spirit.

This is why you can completely trust that what you will read from the Bible will be 100% pure, solid, God-truth! There is no other book on our earth that contains direct words from God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ other than the Holy Bible. God Himself has personally arranged that all of the revelation that He wants us to have in this life about Himself, His Son Jesus, and His Holy Spirit would all be contained in this one incredible Book.

Here are the two specific verses giving us this incredible revelation:

  • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16)
  • “… knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20)

The first verse specifically tells us that all of Scripture, not just some or part of it, comes direct to us by inspiration from God the Father. The second verse then takes it one step further and tells us that the holy men of God who wrote the Bible, all wrote under the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit Himself. It also says that no part of Scripture was of any private interpretation of these authors.

The first verse also lays out the groundwork as to what the Bible is going to be used for – for establishing solid Christian doctrine in the real truths of God, and for instruction in the knowledge and ways of God so that we may all be made complete and thoroughly equipped to go to work for God in the calling that He has set up for each one of our lives.

These two specific verses are powerful, foundational verses in which our study of Scripture has to be based on. If you do not believe that all of the Bible is truly the inspired and infallible Word of God – then the Holy Spirit is not going to move on you to start to really work the truths that are contained in the Bible to change, mold, and transform you into the kind of person that God wants you to become in Him.

Bottom line – if you want the divine truths that are contained in the Bible to really be able to change and transform you – then you will have to believe that all of the Bible comes direct to us from God the Father through the Holy Spirit. If you do not, then the Bible will have little or no transforming effect on you and your life.

2. The Word of God is Living and Powerful

As you will see in the following verses, the words that are contained in the Bible are living, powerful, and sharper than any two edge sword we can make on this earth.

In other words, the words in the Bible have God’s supernatural power and life in them. They are literally anointed by the power of the Holy Spirit Himself. This is why the words and the truths contained in the Bible have the supernatural ability to change and transform you into the kind of person that God wants you to become in Him.

That is why Jesus told the apostles to “feed” His sheep. When you read and study the Bible for increased learning, you are feeding yourself with direct anointed words from God Almighty Himself.

Many Christians who do not regularly feed off the Bible have no idea on what they are really missing out on. The Words that are in the Bible are pure, solid, spiritual food that have the supernatural ability to feed your mind, soul, and spirit. Nothing else will feed your inner man like reading from the Bible will.

Just like our human physical bodies need physical food to be able to survive – so does our mind, soul, and spirit. The food that we feed our physical bodies will not nourish our mind, soul, and spirits.

The only thing that can spiritually feed and nourish us on the inside are true, solid, spiritual truths. And the only true, solid, spiritual truths that can feed us to cause any kind of true spiritual growth to occur in this life are divine truths that come direct from God the Father and Jesus Christ.

There are no other spiritual truths from any other sources that we can feed off of that will cause any kind of true spiritual growth to occur in this life.

Any other source is just dead meat. It has no supernatural life or ability to change us because it is not coming direct from God the Father and thus has no anointing on it.

All other false religions and New Age type thinking have no supernatural ability to change and spiritually transform you in this life. Only the divine truths that are contained in the Bible have this supernatural ability.

Now here are 9 major power verses showing you how much supernatural life and power there really is in the Word of God.

  • For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
  • So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11)
  • Is not My word like a fire?” says the Lord, “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29)
  • “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63)
  • “This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.” (Psalm 119:50)
  • Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart …” (Jeremiah 15:16)
  • How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103)
  • But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:4)
  • “… as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” (1 Peter 2:2)

Notice all of the food analogies that God is using to compare His Word with. What He is trying to tell us is that when you are studying the words that are contained in the Bible for increased learning – you are spiritually feeding yourself with supernatural nutrition!

I believe that all of the above Scripture verses are trying to tell us one main thing – that the Word of God is living, powerful, and real spiritual food for the soul and spirit of every person who is willing to feed off of it.

3. The Word of God is Pure, Solid Truth

If the Bible is telling us that all of Scripture is coming direct to us from God the Father through the Holy Spirit – then the next thing that the Bible will be telling us is that all of the words that are coming direct to us from God the Father are 100% pure, solid truth.

If God is all-perfect and all-powerful, then this means His intelligence and knowledge on all things is all-perfect. And if His knowledge on all things is all-perfect, then this means that all of the words that He is conveying to us in the Bible can be counted on as being perfect words, thereby giving us perfect knowledge.

This means that all of the Bible can be counted on as being 100% pure, solid, God-truth with no errors and mistakes. The Bible tells us that all humans will only know in part with what knowledge we are able to gain down here on this earth. Thus every book you read from human authors will never be totally perfect in the knowledge that the author is trying to transmit to you.

However, since all of the Bible is coming direct to us from God Almighty Himself – then the Bible is the only Book that we have down here on this earth that is totally and completely perfect in the knowledge that it is trying to transmit to us.

This is why the Bible has the ability to change your life. No other book on this earth has the amount of wisdom and knowledge that this Book has – and this is all because this knowledge and wisdom is coming direct to us from God the Father Himself.

Now here are 4 very good verses from Scripture that are specifically telling us that every word that proceeds from the mouth of God is 100% pure, solid truth.

  • Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, lest He reprove you, and you be found a liar.” (Proverbs 30:5)
  • The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” (Psalm 12:6)
  • For the word of the Lord is right, and all His work is done in truth. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.” (Psalm 33:4)
  • Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

Notice the first verse says that the words that come from God are “pure” words. The last verse then says that all of God’s words are “truth.” Put these two verses together and you get that all of the words that come from God are “pure truth.”

Pure means 100% pure – which means that all of God’s words are pure, solid truth with no errors or mistakes. This is why the Word of God is also called infallible and inerrant. If the Bible says that a thing is so – then it is so – end of discussion. You can literally bank your life on it!

4. The Word of God Can Sanctify You

If all of the words of the Bible are 100% pure, solid truth – then this means that all of the words in the Bible have the supernatural ability to sanctify you, especially since all of the Bible has the anointing of the Holy Spirit Himself on the entire Book.

God’s ultimate and highest aim for all of us after we become saved and born again is to sanctify us, to transform us, to mold and shape us into the express image of His Son Jesus. It is the job of the Holy Spirit to start this molding, transforming, and sanctifying work in us after we get saved.

However, the Holy Spirit needs something to work with in order to get this transformation process kicked into full gear – and that something is knowledge. God wants you to have full knowledge on exactly what it is He wants to change about you before He really starts to move you into this sanctification process with Him.

And where do you get the knowledge that will get God to start this sanctification process within you? From the Bible! There is no other book that we can learn and study from that will give us the direct knowledge that we will need from God the Father to get Him to start this sanctification process within us.

It’s the Word and the Spirit working together in a believer’s life that will get God to start working full force in their life so He can change them into the kind of person He really wants them to become in Him.

Here are several powerful verses from Scripture specifically telling us all of this. The first two verses will tell you that God can literally sanctify you by His Word.

  • Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)
  •  ” … that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish.” (Ephesians 5:26)
  • How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Blessed are You, O Lord! Teach me Your statutes.” (Psalm 119:9-12)
  • You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.” (John 15:3)
  • ” … and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” (James 1:21)
  • “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

Notice the last verse says that the Word of God can “effectively work in you.” This means when you start reading and studying the Bible in order to gain more knowledge about God – it will start to effectively work in you so you can start to change into the person God will want you to become in Him.

Just think of the power this Book has to dramatically change and transform the quality of your entire life. True inner happiness and fulfillment can only be found on the inside of your being, not on the outside with material things and possessions.

Hollywood is living proof that money, fame, and notoriety will not buy you true inner happiness. There are many in Hollywood who truly have what they think is “all” – yet they are miserable, unhappy, depressed, and go from one shrink to another – all in an effort to try and find what is still missing in their lives and why they cannot seem to find true inner happiness with all of the earthly wealth they have accumulated.

The only way to find true inner happiness in this life is to become saved and born again through the shed Blood of Jesus Christ – and then enter into a dynamic personal relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. From there, you are to start seeking after the knowledge about God and all of His ways by studying and reading the Bible on your own.

The personal relationship you will establish with God, and the knowledge that you will gain about God from reading and studying from the Bible is what will dramatically transform the quality of your life down here on this earth. Nothing else on this earth will do that for you!

5. The Word of God Will Give You Knowledge and Wisdom

The Bible tells us that we are to grow in the knowledge and ways of God. And the number one way in which we will grow in the knowledge of God is by reading and studying from the Bible.

There is no other way! If you do not seek to learn more about the Lord by studying from the Bible, then your spiritual growth in the Lord will stagnate and you will stop growing in Him.

There are no shortcuts to true spiritual growth in the Lord. You have to pay your dues, and those dues are that you have to gain and increase in knowledge about God and all of His ways before the Holy Spirit will start you on the road to true spiritual growth. And the only Book that will give you the knowledge that will cause true spiritual growth to occur in this life is the Bible.

And not only has God given us everything that we will ever need in this one Book – but He has also given us His Holy Spirit, whose main job is to “teach us all things” and to “guide us into all truth.”

Several verses I will list below will tell you that the Holy Spirit Himself will be the One who will personally open up the meaning of Scripture for you so that you can see the knowledge that God the Father is trying to transmit to you through this Holy Book!

This is a direct supernatural work that can be done for you by the Holy Spirit if you are willing to go into a seeking mode with Him when you study the Bible.

Here are several good verses telling us that the Word of God can impart true knowledge and wisdom to us, and that God does want us growing in the knowledge of Him, His Son, and His Holy Spirit.

  • “… but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)
  • And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.” (Luke 24:45)
  • “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I have said to you.” (John 14:26)
  • “However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth …” (John 16:13)
  • Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31)
  • Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another …” (Colossians 3:16)
  • Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path … The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple … Direct my steps by Your word, and let no iniquity have dominion over me.” (Psalm 119:105, 130, 133)
  • My son, give attention to My words; incline your ear to My sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.” (Proverbs 4:20)

All of the above verses are showing us how powerful the words that are coming direct from God and Jesus really are. The Word of God can truly change your life for the better – but only if you are willing to spend some good quality time seeking to understand what is in this most incredible Book.

6. The Word of God Will Stand Forever

The last thing you will really need to grasp on the power of the Word of God is that the Word of God will last and stand forever – both in this life and the next life to come, which will be heaven.

Here are 3 very good verses from Scripture telling us that the Word of God is not chained and that it will endure to all generations – both in this life and the next life to come, which means forever!

  •  “… for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained.” (2 Timothy 2:9)
  •  “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven. Your faithfulness endures to all generations …” (Psalm 119:89)
  • “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)

Not only will your study of Scripture profit you in this life, but it will also profit you in the next life to come – which will be heaven.

I personally believe that we still continue to study the Bible even when we all enter into heaven. I do not believe any one human can truly master the Bible in this lifetime. There is simply way too much knowledge, wisdom, and revelation that is contained in this one Book for any one human to be able to fully grasp all of it in this lifetime.

I believe that the Bible is like a treasure chest that has no bottom to it. And to think that all of this knowledge is contained in just one Book! Only a true God of the entire universe could have put this much knowledge and revelation into one Book.

Conclusion

I will leave you with one last thought. Each Christian must make their own personal decision on this. Once you have become saved and born again by accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior – you now have one of two choices to make.

You can either choose to press in and start seeking after God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit by spending regular quality time in the Bible to learn as much as you can about the Three of Them – or you can just leave well enough alone, figure you have as much of God as you will ever need in this life, and go on your merry way living for the world and the things of this world – never increasing your knowledge base about the Lord, and never really growing in the knowledge of God and all of His ways.

I am afraid most Christians in this day and age are taking the latter approach. Most Christians have either never read the Bible in its complete entirety, or have read very little of it in their own personal walks with the Lord.

This is one of the main reasons we have started up this website – to try and show everyone how much working knowledge there really is in the Bible, and how this knowledge can dramatically change and transform the quality of your life.

As I have shown you with all of the above Scripture verses, the Word of God is:

  • Inspired, Infallible, and Inerrant
  • Living, Powerful, and Anointed
  • Pure, Solid Truth
  • Sharper than Any Two-Edged Sword
  • Can Spiritually Nourish Your Mind, Soul and Spirit
  • Has the Ability to Sanctify and Cleanse You
  • Has the Ability to Teach You, Guide You, and Direct Your Steps in this Life
  • And Will Last and Stand Forever – Both in this Life and the Next Life to Come

What more can you ask for in one Book? Bottom line – there is simply no other book on our earth that has this amount of unlimited knowledge direct from God Himself. And it is all there for the taking for anyone who wants to dive in and take the journey.

Growing up in church, I always knew that God had a plan for my life, but I was told that I had to find it. I struggled with doubt and inaction because I wasn’t sure of God’s purpose for me. For anyone like me who has felt a lot of pressure to find God’s will, there is some really good news in this Bible verse.

Psalm 138:8 (ESV) says: “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.” This verse tells us that God has a purpose for our lives, and He will accomplish it. Because His love endures forever, we can trust that He will never abandon His work in our lives.

For years I worried that I might be missing God’s plan for my life. I struggled with anxious thoughts like, “What if I’m heading in the wrong direction? How do I know I’m in God’s will?”

But when I finally started to understand His love and faithfulness, I learned that He is working to accomplish His purpose in my life. The pressure is off, because it’s His plan. My role is simply to trust Him and allow Him to work in my life.

Let’s take a closer look at Psalm 138:8 and other Bible verses that show that we can trust God to fulfill His purpose.

It’s God’s Purpose, Not Ours

The first thing we should take away from Psalm 138:8 is the simple truth that God has a purpose.

“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.”

God is orchestrating the events in our lives according to His good plan. In fact, even before we were born, He knew all the days of our lives:

Your eyes saw me before I was put together. And all the days of my life were written in Your book before any of them came to be. ~ Psalm 139:16 NLV

God has a purpose for us that reaches beyond what we can imagine. Even if we dream up great things we can do in life, His purpose is greater. That’s because it’s His purpose, not ours, that will be accomplished. His purpose is bigger than ours, and it will stand firm no matter what happens to us (Source).

Everything Is For His Glory

We get a glimpse of the all-encompassing purpose of God in these verses:

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we … might be for the praise of his glory. ~ Ephesians 1:11-12 NIV

Ultimately, His purpose is bigger than ours because it’s not about us, it’s about Him! He has chosen us to be a people to bring Him glory. Everything we do is ultimately for His glory.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV

God Fulfills His Purpose, Not Us

God knows how each of our individual lives will bring Him glory. Going back to Psalm 138:8, we see that He fulfills this purpose, not us.

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.”

God is intimately involved in our daily lives to accomplish His purpose. If every day is in His book, then His purpose must be very detailed! We don’t know everything that He has planned for us. But, we do know that He works out every little detail according to His plan, for His glory.

And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose. ~ Romans 8:28 BSB

Also, there is another verse in the Psalms that says something similar to Psalm 138:8. Allow me to draw your attention to several different translations of this verse, Psalm 57:2:

I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. (ESV)
I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. (KJV)
I call to God Most High, to God, who completes his plans for me. (EHV)
I will cry to God Most High, To God who accomplishes all things for me. (NASB)
I cry out to God Most High, to the God who does everything for me. (NCV)

Isn’t it amazing? He completes his plans… He does everythingHe accomplishes all things for me. Everything I have. Everything I am. Everything I’ve ever done—it’s all from God! He is the one who sustains me and gives me every moment’s breath.

He Will Finish What He Started

What a good reason to give Him the praise, honor, and glory! His detailed involvement in our lives demonstrates His grace, love, and goodness.

He started a good work in us when, by His Spirit, He enabled us to say “yes” to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. And even after we’ve accepted the gift of salvation, it is still God who continues to work in our lives:

For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. ~ Philippians 2:13 NIV

It’s very freeing to realize that the Lord’s purpose doesn’t depend on us, but on Him. We might make a mistake, make a bad choice, or lose focus, but God is faithful, and He is even working through our mistakes to bring about His purpose. No matter what happens, we can trust that He will finish what He started:

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. ~ Philippians 1:6 ESV

Nothing Can Stop His Purpose

Some Christians worry that they’ve missed God’s will. I’ve struggled with this before, wondering if my decisions had taken me a different direction than God intended. Did I choose the wrong profession? Did I miss a better opportunity?

Maybe you’re afraid you’ve gone astray from God’s purpose for your life because of your past decisions. Maybe you think your mistakes have taken you too far off course. Can I encourage you with something I’ve learned?

Your actions are not powerful enough to derail God’s purpose for you!

In fact, nothing is powerful enough to stop His purpose.

I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. ~ Job 42:2 ESV

God’s Promise of Faithfulness

Remember Psalm 138:8: “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

We know that God’s love endures forever. There is absolutely nothing in the universe that can separate us from His love (see Romans 8:38-39)!

For the LORD is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. ~ Psalm 100:5 NLT

He has promised to be faithful to us. So we can trust that He will never abandon the work He is doing in us. The way I interpret the Psalmist’s (David’s) request in Psalm 138:8, “Do not forsake the work of your hands,” is as a trusting prayer. David is confident that God will answer this request, because he knows and trusts in God’s character.

For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. ~ Psalm 94:14 NIV

Woman looking up and praying to God

Be encouraged, friend. God loves you fiercely and He will never abandon you. Nothing you could ever do would be powerful enough to stop His purpose for you.

Maybe you’ve made some mistakes. But if your faith is in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice, your sins and mistakes have been forgiven and washed away.

God is so good and so faithful that He even works through our mistakes to accomplish His purpose! He works all things together for good (see Romans 8:28 above). By His grace, He orchestrates every detail of our lives for the ultimate purpose of His glory.

Three Practical Applications of Trust

So if you’re like me, maybe you believe and trust that God will fulfill His purpose, but there’s still a part of you that asks: But what do I do? Here are three practical steps that we can use to apply this to our lives.

1. Don’t Worry About Your Life

I used to be afraid to try new things because I wasn’t sure if they were “God’s will for me.” But that way of thinking did nothing but paralyze me. I was stuck in inaction rather than developing the gifts and skills that God gave me.

So, Psalm 138:8 and Psalm 57:2 teach us to stop worrying so much about finding God’s “perfect” plan for our lives.

If it’s His plan, He will accomplish it. If we believe that He will fulfill His purpose, (not us), it frees us to focus more on walking with Him from day to day. Jesus told us not to worry, but to seek first to live life in God’s way:

I tell you, do not worry about your life… But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. ~ Matthew 6:25, 33-34 NIV

In our day-to-day lives, there is freedom in Christ. We have freedom to try new things, explore new directions, and see where we can use our unique gifts, talents, and skills to glorify God. Instead of worrying about our lives, we can simply rest, trust Him, and live for His glory.

2. Get to Know God

It’s hard to trust someone you don’t know, so the next practical application is to get to know God. Do you believe He has a purpose for you? How do you know it’s a good purpose? If you know the nature of God, that’s an easy question to answer: Because He is good.

Man studying the book of Romans in the Bible

God has given us the amazing privilege of having a relationship with Him! We have the Holy Spirit living in us. The Bible is a treasure of knowledge about God’s character, and the Spirit uses it to teach us about Him. So get in God’s Word, study it, meditate on it, and learn what it says about who He is. Then spend time in prayer. Build that relationship with Him and learn His attributes.

When you get to know God, you get to know His heart and His ultimate purpose. In His Word, He has shown us His way for living life (see Micah 6:8). Through studying Scripture we learn the guidelines He’s set in place for how we should live. And the more we learn about Him, the more we know for sure that He is powerful and capable of fulfilling His purpose:

I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me? ~ Jeremiah 32:37 NLT

For learning more about the attributes of God and His nature, I highly recommend this book: The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer. I also recommend Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund for getting to know the kind and compassionate heart of Jesus.

Bible meditation is also a great way to fill our minds with truths about who God is. For step-by-step guidance on how to meditate as a Christian, these 3 guided meditations on Scripture are the perfect introduction to Christian meditation for beginners:

3. Remember the Big Picture

Finally, remember the big picture. God has made His ultimate purpose known to us: it’s all for His glory! He chose us to be His holy, perfect, and blameless people, and to bring all things together under the headship of Jesus Christ:

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight… He made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ … to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. ~ Ephesians 1:4, 9-10 NIV

In eternity we won’t be thinking about all of the things we did for God in life! We will be praising Him for all of the wonderful things He did:

O LORD, I will honor and praise your name, for you are my God. You do such wonderful things! You planned them long ago, and now you have accomplished them. ~ Isaiah 25:1 NLT

Woman standing in a field and praising God

When all is said and done, we will know that everything was for His glory, and He fulfilled His purpose.

Whatever we do in our lives, may it be done to honor Him. May we use the unique skills, gifts, and opportunities that He has given us to bring Him glory.

Lead me in the path of your commandments,

As Christians, we know we are to obey God, to grow spiritually, and to actually apply the Bible to our lives. But applying God’s word to your life can be a challenge. Thankfully the word of God itself gives us an understanding on how to best apply God’s word in our everyday life.

While these truths are huge topics within themselves, here are five practical steps found in Scripture on how to apply God’s word.

1. Apply God’s Word by Remaining in Jesus/ Being Filled with the Holy Spirit
Not to oversimplify, but the Scriptures are clear that it is impossible to obey God’s commands without the grace of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit:

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

(Also see: Romans 8:3-4, Ephesians 5:18)

2. Apply God’s Word through Prayer/Asking for the Power
We need to be intimately connected with Jesus and to be filled with his Spirit to apply his written truth. The primary means of grace on intimately connecting with Jesus is prayer. When we lack something, we are told to ask Jesus directly for it. In order to be filled with the Spirit, thus having the power to apply God’s word to our life, we are to pray at all times in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18), asking for all that we need, including the power to obey:

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. (James 1:5-6)

(Also see: James 4:1-2, Matthew 7:7-8)

3. Apply God’s Word by Reading, Understanding, Memorizing, and Meditating Over the Word of God
If you hope to apply what God has written, there is no getting around the fact that we must do the most obvious thing: read it. You can’t obey someone if you don’t know what they have said. Additionally, we must not only read it, we must understand the Scriptures. Digging deep in our study of what God has actually communicated in his inspired pages is a crucial step in applying it. We must also memorize the word of God and prayerfully mediated over it as well so that God’s truth is firmly in our hearts, for “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart” (Matthew 12:35 NIV). If we hope for our lives to reflect God’s revealed will, then we must immerse ourselves with his word:

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success (Joshua 1:8)

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. (Psalm 119:11)

(Also see: Ephesians 5:15-17, Colossians 1:9-10)

4. Apply God’s Word by Actively Believing in Faith that God’s Word is Truth
What you truly believe is reflected in what you do. Like our mother’s told us when we were young, “Actions speak louder than words.” We can say we believe, but what we do proves what we believe. Knowing this, therefore, means that we should not try to reverse the flow. We must not try to change what we do to alter what we believe. Rather, to change our actions, we must get down to our core beliefs. To apply God’s word to your life, you must genuinely and actively put your faith in the fact that what God has said is true:

The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever. (Psalm 119:160)

Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. (James 2:18)
(Also see: 2 Corinthians 4:13, Galatians 3:5-6. Philippians 3:9)

5. Apply God’s Word by Willfully Choosing to Obey
The fact that we are unable to apply God’s word without the Holy Spirit does not contradict the fact that God gives man the freedom to choose. God’s Holy Spirit does not compromise man’s free will, but rather through the Holy Spirit man’s will is set free. Once we have been justified through faith, we have a part to play in actively choosing to participate in the process of our sanctification. Once we are filled with the Holy Spirit, intimately connected to Jesus Christ, prayerfully seeking the power to obey, understanding and knowing the word of God, putting our faith in the truth of the Bible, the last step is to choose to apply God’s word to our life:

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:10-11 NIV)

(Also see: Philippians 2:12-13, Galatians 5:1)

Applying God’s word your your life will never be easy and we will never do it perfectly on this side of eternity. But through God’s means of grace, he will give us the power to grow in him every day.

Lifelong Learning Matters
Jan. 17, 2017

Waking up feeling purposeless is incredibly frustrating. You look around and see your friends and coworkers living passionate, engaged, meaningful lives. They have deep relationships, rewarding jobs and a sense of direction that compels them to hop out of bed each morning with a spring in their step.

You know that God has something good in store for you. You don’t believe he intends you to live a life of painful drudgery in which each day is a total drag. After all, the Bible is chock full of passages about joy. While this certainly doesn’t mean that every single day is a parade and circus, it does mean that an overall sense of gladness should permeate your life.

In Psalm 63:7, David said, “…for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” How can you get to that place? Where, instead of wandering aimlessly through life, you’re actually singing for joy (or just making a joyful noise if you’re not the singing type)?

In this post, we’re going to first talk about some key signs that you may not be living in the fullness of God’s purpose for you. Then we’ll give some key suggestions for how to begin living a meaningful, enthusiastic, joyful life.

6 SIGNS THAT YOU MAY NOT BE LIVING IN GOD’S PURPOSE

Before we dive into this point, we need to make at least one caveat. In one sense, you are always living in God’s purpose. God is God and He works all things, including your life, according to his purposes. Nothing can happen without God ordaining it.

Psalm 57:2 says, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” This is key in understanding God’s purpose for your life. God has numbered your days and will fulfill every purpose He has for you.

However, our choices and actions also really matter. In some ways, this is a mystery we can’t fully understand, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. We can choose to do things that will bring us more joy and give us more of a sense of purpose. That’s where we’re headed in this post. We want to help you identify those choices you can make to bring more excitement and God-given purpose into your life.

But first, here are 6 signs that you don’t have much purpose in your life.

YOU’RE BLATANTLY LIVING IN SIN.

Let’s start with the obvious here. If you’re blatantly disobeying the Bible, you’re not living in God’s purpose and you will certainly experience a sense of aimlessness in your life. This one is pretty straightforward so we don’t need to spend too much time here.

YOU LACK JOY AND EXCITEMENT.

If you wake up every day filled with apathy or dread or total boredom, you’re probably not doing what you were meant to do. God has created you uniquely, has really good things planned for you and one of the fruits of the Spirit is joy (Galatians 5:22). Sure, there will be difficult things you encounter that require patience and persistence, but overall you should have a sense of joy and excitement that fills your days, your work and your relationships.

In his book “Desiring God,” John Piper says:

The pursuit of joy in God is not optional. It is not an “extra” that a person might grow into after he comes to faith.

YOU DON’T FEEL MUCH FULFILLMENT IN LIFE.

If you go about your days experiencing little fulfillment, you may be wandering from your God-given purpose. Fulfillment comes from doing rewarding, meaningful, purposeful things. From a job that taps into your skills and passions. From a relationship that involves giving and receiving. From hobbies that are invigorating instead of mind-numbing. Yes, you’ll have to do certain things that are boring and unfulfilling, but if you’re entire life is gray, you probably need a change.

YOU WORK SO THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORK.

You know the feeling of pointless work. You go to the office, clock in, do your job, then go home and collapse in front of the television. You work for the weekends and for retirement. All true joy you experience comes from things outside of work. From hobbies or friends or side jobs.

Ecclesiastes 8:15 says, “And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.”

Would you say that this kind of joy characterizes your life and work? If not, you may need to rethink where you’re headed.

YOU FEEL STUCK.

If you desperately want a change but also feel totally stuck in your life, that’s almost certainly a sign that you’re not walking according to God’s purpose. Those who are stuck want to go in a particular direction but don’t know how to get there. So they spin their wheels, feeling endlessly frustrated but unsure of how to make the frustration end. Do you feel trapped?

YOU HAVE NO DIRECTION.

If you don’t know God’s purpose for your life, you constantly feel a sense of aimlessness. You feel as though you’re wandering from thing to thing without any forward progress. Nothing excites you and you don’t have any specific goals you’re working toward. Unlike the Israelites, who wandered for 40 years yet still had a goal (the Promised Land), you don’t even have a goal in front of you.

6 WAYS TO REGAIN YOUR PURPOSE

In his classic book “The Lord of the Rings,” J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a poem that included the line, “Not all who wander are lost.” The same applies to you. Even though you feel like you’re wandering without any true purpose, that doesn’t mean you’re lost. You can regain your sense of purpose and discover what God has for your life.

Here are 6 ways to discover God’s purpose for your life.

GO TO GOD IN PRAYER.

Again, let’s start with the obvious. If you feel purposeless, ask God to give you wisdom and direction. James 1:5 states, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

That’s incredibly good news. God wants to give you a purpose. He wants to bestow divine wisdom on you. It’s not like God is holding out on you to make you miserable. He desires you to have a joyful, ambitious, purposeful life. Ask God for purpose and expect Him to give it to you.

DIG INTO GOD’S WORD.

The primary way God speaks to us is through the Bible. This means that one of the first things you should do in your search for God’s purpose is to start digging into scripture. Now, you won’t find any verses that tell you to become a dance instructor or painter, but you will begin to understand the heart of God.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s word brings light to paths that otherwise seem dark. In the Bible you learn how to live wisely in God’s world, which is the first step toward finding your purpose.

DETERMINE YOUR GIFTS AND STRENGTHS.

God has given you very specific gifts and strengths. Maybe you’re a math whiz or a wise counselor. Maybe you have a mind for electronics or business. Maybe you’re great at organizing people and getting things done. God’s purpose for you probably involves the things you’re already good at.

This is where education can be particularly valuable. Going to college or going back to college allows you to discover your gifts and then determine how you’re going to use them. It also connects you with people who want to help you find your purpose.

DETERMINE YOUR PASSIONS.

What is one thing you’re particularly passionate about? Really, this can be anything. Business, art, economics, alleviating poverty, whatever. If money wasn’t an issue, what would you love to do?

Determining your passions often helps you figure out what God has called you to do. It’s often said that God works at the intersection of our gifts and our passions. Where do your gifts meet your passions? That may be God’s purpose for you.

BRING OTHERS INTO YOUR LIFE.

Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” In other words, one of the main ways God will help you find your purpose is through others.

A caveat needs to be made here. Your counselors should be people you trust. Whether this is your professors, parents or friends, it needs to be people who have your back and want the best for you. You want wise counselors to help you find God’s purpose for you.

TAKE A SOLITUDE RETREAT.

Sometimes it can be incredibly helpful to get away from it all and take some unhurried time to think, pray and journal. You don’t have to spend a week in the woods for this to be effective. Even just a day away from the hustle and grind can be hugely rewarding.

During these retreats, allow yourself to simply be still. To ponder. To ask God for direction and listen for His voice. This doesn’t need to be complicated and doesn’t require any elaborate rituals. Hebrews 11:6 is a reminder that God always rewards those who seek him. He’s not hiding in the dark, trying to keep his will hidden from you. He wants to guide you.

IN THE END, TRUST GOD

Trying to discover your life purpose can be a stressful, overwhelming thing. It can seem like such a big, confusing, frustrating subject. You want to move forward, but you’re not sure how. You want to find your purpose, but you feel like you’re aimlessly wandering.

But you can trust God to lead you where he wants you to go. As Psalm 23:2-3 says, “He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

You may feel confused, but God doesn’t.

God’s favor will change your life, and you already have it! Here are 4 points to access the favor of God each and every day.

by Gloria Copeland

How would your life look if you were surrounded, all day and every day, by God’s favor? How different would things be if doors opened for you, and you walked through each one covered with God’s favor? Would your actions and attitudes in every situation be any different if you knew beyond any doubt that success lies ahead, because you are one of God’s favorites? Would you find the courage to lay down your anxieties and fears? Of course, you would!

The truth is God’s favor will change your life! In this article, I’m going to give you four points to help you access God’s favor each and every day. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

1. You Already Have God’s Favor

Many Christians believe they have to somehow earn the favor of God, but the truth is, we already have His favor. God saved us because of His favor toward us.

Ephesians 2:8 tells us, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (NKJV).

Simply put, grace is favor.

God’s favor is the power that changes things for us. First and foremost, you and I are saved by His favor, and I’m not just talking about going to heaven when we die. To be saved means to be delivered, protected, preserved, healed and made whole.

God’s favor covers every area of our lives! By His favor, He has taken care of everything we will ever need—spirit, soul and body. His supernatural grace is so vast, the Bible says it is going to take all the ages to come for Him to show us all the riches of His grace in the kindness He’s given us in Christ Jesus (see Ephesians 2:7).

You may be thinking, Oh, I can’t wait until I get to heaven, so I can experience the fullness of God’s favor!

You don’t have to wait! God is pouring out His favor on us right here and now. Even before we were born again, He was giving us His favor. While we were still rebelling against Him, “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8).

It was God’s grace at work in your life that enabled you to be born again. From the moment you stepped into that new life—the moment you made Jesus Lord—God’s favor began working nonstop on your behalf. Being born again was just the starting place for His favor to pour out. And He will pour out grace and more favor to you every moment of your life if you’ll receive it!

Have you made Jesus the Lord of your life? You can do it right now! Simply pray this prayer.

Psalm 5:12 says, “For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield” (NKJV). That scripture is talking about the born-again child of God who serves Him. It is talking about you! Jesus made you righteous. When Jesus shed His blood, He made righteousness available to all mankind, and with it came the favor of God! God’s favor surrounds you constantly! You have been born again into His righteousness.

We should always see ourselves wrapped in God’s favor 24 hours a day. Every morning when you get up, throw off the covers and jump out of bed saying, “I am the righteous; Lord, Your favor surrounds me like a shield.”

2. You Receive God’s Favor by Faith

Now you may be thinking, Gloria, I know a lot of believers who don’t enjoy the kind of favor you’re talking about. Their lives are full of tragedy and disappointment. Why doesn’t God surround them with favor?

God does surround them with favor. They just don’t know it, so they can’t take advantage of what He has given them.

You see, according to 2 Peter 1:2, God’s grace is multiplied to us through knowledge. The first thing you have to do before you can receive the benefits of God’s favor is to know they are yours. Then, you have to receive them by faith. Remember Ephesians 2:8, “God saved you by his grace….” God’s favor provides every possible blessing and goodness He has to give, starting with being saved. Your part is faith—to believe and receive all He has given.

Our grandson Jeremy Pearsons puts it so simply. He says, “Grace is God saying, ‘Here is all the good stuff I have to give you.’ Faith is you saying, ‘Thank You, I’ll take it.’”

So, where do we get the faith to receive? “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17, KJV). We find out the truth about God’s favor, goodness and blessing as we hear His Word on these things. Faith comes, we believe and begin to receive what His Word says.

I remember the first time Ken and I heard that healing belonged to us because it was part of our salvation—part of what Jesus bought and paid for on the cross. Our lives changed that night! We stepped into a new dimension of God’s favor. Until then, we had believed people could be healed, and we always prayed when we got sick. Sometimes we would receive, and sometimes we wouldn’t. But when we realized God’s Word said that healing belonged to us by the blood of Jesus—that it was part of the favor provided by God’s salvation grace—faith came. We received it, and we began to live healed.

That’s exactly how favor works. It’s always surrounding us. Healing was there for Ken and me all the time. It was always part of God’s favor. Once we heard about it, all we did was reach out and take it by faith.

Learn how favor produces opportunity in this video from Jerry Savelle:

3. God Is Searching for Someone to Bless With His Favor

Sadly, many times we are slow to receive God’s favor. We think we’re waiting on Him when He’s actually waiting on us to receive. You see, God has already done everything it takes for you and me to be fully cared for while we’re living here on earth. He has provided every blessing—health, prosperity, peace of mind, joy, deliverance from sin and everything that pertains to our good life (2 Peter 1:3). Then He tops it all off with life in heaven when we leave this earth! It’s all part of His favor. All we have to do is stay ready to receive.

Actually, we can’t get away from God’s favor. Second Chronicles 16:9 tells us, “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him…” (KJV). Perfect doesn’t refer to someone who never makes a mistake. It means someone who is loyal, devoted and faithful. This kind of heart is always ready to receive the good things His grace provides.

God is always searching for someone to bless. That’s His nature. He is full of mercy and compassion. Because of His favor, He looks for someone who is ready to trust Him; someone who is ever ready to reach out in faith to receive His favor and blessing.

Are you that kind of person? Are you the kind of person who is trustworthy, someone who is ready and willing to receive God’s favor and blessing?

When I heard from God’s Word in Matthew 6 that the Lord takes care of His people and provides what we need, faith came and I was born again. I fell in love with the Word of God and my faith grew. Even today, I gladly say, “Look, Lord. Here I am. I’m ready. Just show it to me in the Word, and I’ll take it. I’ll believe it and act on it and receive all You say!”

You can do the same. If you would like to open the door to the favor and grace of God—and who wouldn’t?—begin to find out what He says in His Word. Discover the countless ways He desires to bless you. Believe Him. Begin to expect to receive. Every day declare what the Bible says: “God encompasses me with favor like a shield. Everywhere I go, everything I do, I am favored of God” (from Psalm 5:12, KJV)!

That may not be easy for you to do if you’re covered up by challenging circumstances right now. You will have to stare those challenges in the face and declare to them you’re favored by God when they are telling you, “Hey, stupid, things are terrible. It’s all over. You don’t have any hope.”

But, I’m telling you, you can do it! There are plenty of scriptures for you to stand on that affirm you are surrounded by God’s favor. Here’s an article with four scriptures you will want to begin confessing today! Get them firmly established in your heart and don’t get off them—even when circumstances seem to contradict them.

You may be in need of a job, the next step in your life toward God’s plan and purpose for you. Many people are in that place today. When you go in for that job interview, favor is what you should believe God for. Look up favor scriptures, speak them over that job and just go in there expecting the Lord to give you favor. Remember, He favors you! Someone else may look better on paper than you do, but when you go in there, the favor of God goes before you. That interviewer will think, Well, you know, that guy over there has done more—or been to school more or done something else more—but there’s just something about this guy here. I like this guy. What is it about him? I don’t know, but I like him. I’m going to give him a shot at this job. That’s favor and you’ve got it all over you!

4. You Must Release Your Faith for God’s Favor

God’s favor is yours, but there are a couple of things you must do to fully enjoy its benefits. First, you must receive God’s favor like every other spiritual promise—by faith. Then you must release your faith.

That’s what Abraham, the father of our faith, did. The circumstances looked hopeless when God promised him he would be the father of many nations. His age. Sarah’s lifelong barrenness. How could it be? They received God’s promise by faith and God’s favor.

[For Abraham, human reason for] hope being gone, hoped in faith that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been promised, So [numberless] shall your descendants be. He did not weaken in faith when he considered the [utter] impotence of his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or [when he considered] the barrenness of Sarah’s [deadened] womb. No unbelief or distrust made him waver (doubtingly question) concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God, fully satisfied and assured that God was able and mighty to keep His word and to do what He had promised…. [Righteousness, standing acceptable to God] will be granted and credited to us also who believe in (trust in, adhere to, and rely on) God, Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead…. Through Him also we have [our] access (entrance, introduction) by faith into this grace (state of God’s favor) in which we [firmly and safely] stand…. (Romans 4:18-21, 24, 5:2, AMPC).

Look at Romans 5:2 again. We have access by faith into grace! God’s favor surrounds us—our faith releases it! Glory to God!

So, we are just like Abraham. That’s how it is in life for all of us. Sometimes things look bad. But we have to learn when we walk in faith and face the natural facts, we believe God anyway. We grow to the point where we can hear bad news without wavering in our faith…and receive God’s favor no matter what the circumstances are.

Receiving God’s favor by faith is a simple act on our part.

Get into God’s Word. Put the Word into your heart and speak it out your mouth. Believe it and act on it. Receive it!

When you do that, you will be victorious in every area of your life. There is no situation, no circumstance—nothing—that is stronger than the grace of God…the favor that surrounds you.

Whatever you may be facing today, stand up and get right in its face and say this: “I’m a born-again child of Almighty God. His supernatural favor surrounds me like a shield this very moment. His grace is more than enough to deliver me out of this trouble. My faith is in God’s Word, and I’m coming out of this triumphantly by the favor of God!”

Then, begin to expect great things to happen. I can tell you from the Word of God and from my own experience, your life will never be the same when you act like the favor of God is yours!

The Bible is an incredible book of history and facts that proves that there is a God that created all things. Most important of all, the Bible is the Word of God. It contains the mind of God and His will for each one of our lives. That is why the Bible was given to us. Paul the Apostle says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, «All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.» Why should we study the Word of God? The following are a few scriptural reasons that we should consider when answering this question.

First, the Word of God is infallible. There is no error in God’s Word. The law of the Lord is perfect concerning our soul. The testimony of the Lord is not only infallible it is inerrant. Proverbs 30:5-6, «Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.» The purity of His words does not need anything added to it. God warns us not to misrepresent His scripture.

Second, the Word of God is complete. The Bible does not need any new chapters or verses. It is all given to us already. Many cults add their own books or commentaries to the Bible. All you need is God’s Word because it is the holy Word of God. It is complete. In Revelation 22:18-19, God gives us a warning, «For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.»

Third, the Word of God is totally authoritative. The book of Psalms 119:89 says «Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.» The Word of God is the only source for absolute divine authority. This divine authority is for you and me as servants of Jesus Christ. When some say, «I have a word from the Lord for you,» write it down and as you study God’s word see if the Lord speaks to you through His Scriptures. Only then will you know if the Lord is truly speaking to you.

Fourth, God’s Word is totally sufficient for all of our needs. We don’t need anything else. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 it reads «All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.» We Christians can be totally secure in the Lord by studying the Bible because it is God’s plan for our life.

And fifth, the Word of God will accomplish what it promises. If God told you something will happen, and you wait, it will happen. In Isaiah 55:11 it says, «So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.» God sent His word to accomplish His perfect will in our lives. If God makes a promise to you He will fulfill it in His own time. There are so many promises given to us in the Bible. These promises reassure us and bring comfort to our lives in our times of trial. I challenge you to take time to study the Word of God. The Lord will show you wonderful things that will change your life.

God has a plan for you! Isn’t that comforting? You don’t have to come up with some remarkable life expedition, start an orphanage or move to the jungle. You need only spend time with him, listen and obey when he speaks.

God’s ultimate will is the advancement of his kingdom (Dan 2:44), his glorification (1 Cor 10:31), and the salvation and sanctification of his children through his son, Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:9).

It is his desire to be in a loving relationship with us first, and for us to practice good deeds secondly. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

What is God's will for my life? What does the Bible say?

Stop thinking of God’s will for your life as a separate plan from his will for his kingdom. They are the same.

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:1–2

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. — Proverbs 16-9

What is the difference between God’s sovereign will and his will for us?

There are two ways to describe God’s will:

1) His sovereign will

This is the will of God that will come to pass no matter what. Nothing will stop it. In Isaiah 46:10 God says, “My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.” Nothing will hinder or stop this plan. It takes into account human sin and evil.

Then this sovereign will can be broken into two categories:

  • what he causes (efficacious will)
  • what he allows (permissive will)

Jesus said in the Garden of Gethsemane, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

John Piper explains, “There was no changing it, and Jesus bowed and said, ‘Here’s my request, but you do what is best to do.’ That’s the sovereign will of God.”

“And don’t miss the very crucial point here that it includes the sins of man. Herod, Pilate, the soldiers, the Jewish leaders — they all sinned in fulfilling God’s will that his Son be crucified (Isaiah 53:10). So be very clear on this: God wills to come to pass some things that he hates.”

2) God’s will of command

These are the things he commands us to do and we can chose to obey or not.

Here are some examples in scripture of God’s will of command:

Repent.

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

Give thanks.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Do good.

“For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.” 1 Peter 2:15

Abstain from sexual immorality.

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;” 1 Thessalonians 4:3

Seek the Kingdom of God.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33

What is the will of God for my life?

1.) His primary way to tell us his will is through the Bible.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

2.) His will for us is to walk with him!

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

3.) He plans to give us a hope and a future.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

4.) He wants us to pray to him and says we will find him.

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:12-13

5.) He wants to sanctify us to be more like his son.

“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23

5.) We can know his will by renewing our minds in accordance with the Holy Spirit.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

Jesus is your way - Henry Blackaby quote

How can I be in God’s will?

Let’s read this beautiful excerpt from “Experiencing God,” by Henry T. Blackaby:

Often people approach knowing and doing God‘s will this way: They ask, “Lord, what do you want me to do? When do you want me to do it? How shall I do it?”

Isn’t this response most typical of us? We are always asking God for a detailed “roadmap.” We say “Lord, if you could just tell me where I am heading, then I will be able to set my course and go.”

He says, “You don’t need to. What you need to do is follow me one day at a time.”We need to come to the place where our response to God will be: “Lord, just tell me what to do one step at a time, and I will do it.”

Who is the only one who really knows the way for you to fulfill God‘s purpose for your life? God is! Jesus said, “I am the Way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

  • He did not say, “I will show you the way.”
  • He did not say, “I will give you a roadmap.”
  • He did not say, “I will teach you which direction to head.”
  • He said, “I am the way. Jesus knows the way; he is your way.”

4 things to determine God's will in your life

How can I make hard decisions?

Here is a helpful excerpt from Ann Graham Lotz from Daily Life for Daily Living:

Often I’m asked, “Anne, I have a major decision to make. How can I know if it’s in God’s will?” The four things I use to determine God’s will in making a decision are these:

  1. The confirmation of God’s Word
  2. My inner conviction
  3. Practical circumstances
  4. The counsel of godly, mature Christians

Before you step out in faith, have at least three of these four in place. But sometimes God might require you to take a step out in faith before circumstances confirm it.

Purposes of God quote

Does God have a plan for my life?

Let’s read from “Discerning the Voice of God,” by Priscilla Shirer:

Before we can accurately discern God’s voice we have to recognize and believe that God has a plan. He has written a script we are to follow. He doesn’t want us to create our own, write new lines, or change his suit to our agendas. He just wants us to recognize and trust that his plans are best.

God‘s plans were formulated and prepared before your birth or even before time begin. He already has an agenda for your career, ministry, finances, and family; and his plans should always take precedence over your own!

We have to decide either to spend our time discovering and aligning ourselves with the purposes of God or doing what we want while asking God to bless it.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ephesians 2-10

Why do some doors close?

I find it comforting to know that doors were opened and closed to Paul in Acts, just as they are to us today. He didn’t know God’s exact plan, but was willing to obey at each turn.

Here we read a short transcript from a sermon “The Mystery of God’s Will,” by Chuck Swindoll:

What is interesting that when Silas and Paul begin their journey — this is the second journey of Paul — doors close where they thought they would be open. … “And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.” (Acts 16:6)

Now wait a minute! Aren’t there needs in Phrygia and Galatia? Absolutely. Aren’t there lost there? Absolutely. Wouldn’t that have been a great place for this apostle and his traveling companions to minister? It seems like it would. No, the door closed.

Please observe the door wasn’t closed by Satan. And it wasn’t closed because they found it difficult. Paul has already proven he can handle hardship. The Holy Spirit has closed the door. He is forbidden to go there.

“And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas.” (Acts 16:7-8)

… Troas is at the edge of the Aegean so they can’t go any further. Now, we don’t read all of their emotions here, but I’m sure there were a few evenings of wrestling and struggling and conversation over “why in the world would we even set out on this trip?”

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.” (Acts 16:9-10)

I believe it is our responsibility to lay before the Lord a willingness that says … I will not give you my agenda. I will not expect you to fulfill my options. I am available to you. I can tell you that every place I have ministered to, I was surprised to be led to. I did not seek one of them.

God has a plan for you quote

What is God’s will and what is free will?

I read a book about God‘s will and it said that there’s no use even praying or asking others to pray for decisions in your life because it’s up to you. The author said God doesn’t necessarily care who you marry, what school you go to, what house you buy etc. I threw the book away. I believe that’s contrary to what the Bible says and contrary to my own testimony.

How could one say God doesn’t doesn’t care about major moments in our lives? The God who knows the number of hairs on our heads and collects our tears in a bottle doesn’t care about our loved ones, our dreams, our goals or life events? Impossible.

God is in the details. He is in ALL of the details. He is the reason a fern unfurls at a perfect 2:3 ratio. The reason the earth orbits at the perfect distance from the sun. The reason a 3 billion letter code exists in the human cell. God laid the foundations of the earth and sustains them. (Job 38)

I think the confusion comes when we need to make decisions. What if I make the wrong decision and am outside God’s will? How will I know which way he wants me to go?

Several years ago I faced a dilemma, and as I prayed to God I felt him speak to my spirit. He said “Child, if I went to all this trouble for free will, don’t you think I would give you a choice?”

You see, I was praying about a minor choice, fearful of being suddenly out of the will of God. If I choose the wrong thing to wear today, will I be out of God’s will? Of course not. Or if I eat a sandwich instead of soup for lunch? No!

That simple question he asked me was a turning point in how I see God’s will. He’s not trying to trick us or hide from us. He says if we seek him we will find him. He’s not waiting for us to choose the wrong path so that he can scold us.

So while he has written the script and we are to listen and obey, he has also given us a free will. We have free will to ignore him, push him away, disobey, yes. But this free will was meant for something more beautiful — a free will to love him, to create, to imagine, to dream. And these are things we can do within his will.

Sometimes when there is a choice to make there is no right or wrong answer. It can simply be a matter of preference.

Sometimes there are choices that right and wrong. And the primary way we know God’s will is through the Bible.

plans to give you hope and a future. — jeremiah 29-11

How can I hear from God?

Now I told you that I heard God speak to my spirit. How do I know it was God? First and foremost I have to line it up with the Word. There will never be a discrepancy between God and his Word. So God will not tell you have an affair, take money that is not yours or lie, etc.

It’s important to read your Bible daily so that you know what it says. The answers to most everything are there! He will most likely answer you through scripture.

  • It gives us perspective. We don’t want to make decisions from a worldly view, but a heavenly one.
  • It gives us peace. We don’t want to make decisions from fear.
  • It gives us a personal relationship with God. We can make decisions with godly wisdom!
  • It is our weapon against spiritual warfare. This prevents making decisions from confusion.

Take time making decisions. Sit in prayer. Sit in silence. Wait upon the Lord. Plan to obey when you do hear from him.

That time spent in prayer is not wasted. It builds a faithful relationship seeing an answer over time, seeing he has a plan and that his timing is best. What we learn during that time is valuable!

Trust and obey the Lord

Trust and obey in the Lord’s plan.

Trust

God does not typically unfold his plan in detail to his children. Read what he told Abraham: “The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.’” God told Abraham to leave everything and everyone he knew for a land God would show him. He didn’t draw him a map or give him an outline of what would happen next. He only told him what to do in this moment. Abraham obeyed.

Obey

God told Abraham to circumcise every male in his house as part of a new covenant. How long did Abraham take to obey? How long would it take your to obey this command?

“Then Abraham took Ishmael his son and all those born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him.” (Gen 17:23)

Abraham did as God asked that very day! When you do hear from your God who loves you, plan in advance to obey immediately.

my story on God's will in my life

My personal story

Several years ago God told me we would move and it would be with my in-laws! It would be a house with space for Bible studies and gatherings and His purposes. This sounded absurd to me. My in-laws lived in Italy. They don’t speak English and we couldn’t afford a bigger house. You want me to live with my in-laws, Lord?! Anyway, I was happy where we were.

That is oftentimes how I know God is speaking to my heart — I typically don’t want to do it. The other way to know God is speaking to you is when things come to fruition.

My in-laws’ visas were approved out of the blue and stamped with a very unexpected four-month timeline! We put our house up for sale that very week.

Twice we made an offer on a house with no guest house that needed work. And twice they didn’t respond. It was a clear no. In hindsight there was no way we could have handled all that with kids and in-laws. For the first time I did not beg God to have the house I thought I wanted. I prayed intensely for His will to be done instead.

Feeling insecure that I had made up my vision from God, I prayed for confirmation that we were on the right track. The very next day our pastor asked us to lead community group at our house. This aligned with the vision. We didn’t have space or parking to host a large group at our old house.

My mom saw a house out of our price range. It was perfect for us, too perfect. We made a low offer. It was all we had and could go no higher.

As we waited for the response I told Marcello that I submit to the Lord’s will. If they countered, we didn’t have more to give. If God said no, it was for our own protection. I submit. Less than 2 minutes later we got a text that they accepted and didn’t counter!

We’ve been in this house for two years now! The guest house was made for my Italian in-laws. They’ve sacrificed significantly financially for years to come here and now have a home of their very own.

The very week we moved in we hosted our first small group that now has 13 families. We’ve also been able to host four short-term foster kids with the extra space.

Praise the Lord that I didn’t stay where I was when he called me out!
