Wordle’s popularity is yet to wane after taking over people’s morning coffee time early this year.

The game has now switched over to the New York Times‘ website but remains free to play, at least for now.

Today’s Wordle is the 242nd edition. If you haven’t attempted it yet and don’t want to know the answer, look away now.

What is Wordle?

Wordle is a simple word game that gives players six attempts to guess a five-letter word each day.

There is a new word every day, and the word is the same for everybody.

The game now has millions of players, and has become instantly recognisable on social media, with people sharing their scores in the form of little green, yellow and white (or black if you’re playing on dark mode) squares.

What is today’s Wordle answer?

OK, this is your final chance to avoid spoilers, so if you don’t want to know the answer yet, leave this page immediately. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The Wordle 242 answer for Wednesday 16 February is… CAULK.

The uncommon word has caused issues for players, with “Wordle 242 x” trending on Twitter, meaning a lot of people never got the answer.

Many players complained that they didn’t even know the word existed, while others blamed the New York Times, claiming the paper has made the game harder since purchasing it (though the truth is it is largely using the original database of words entered by creator Josh Wardle).

The Cambridge Dictionary defines Caulk as “a substance used for filling in the gaps around the edge of something, for example a bath or shower”.

This may have given homeowners and DIY experts a significant upper hand over others in today’s challenge.

How do I play Wordle?

You can play Wordle online, either on a computer or mobile device, right here.

Start by inputting a five-letter word and hitting enter.

The letters will then either turn green, yellow or stay blank.

Here’s what those colours mean:

  • Green – you have put the right letter in the right spot
  • Yellow – the letter is in the word, but in a different spot
  • Blank – the letter is not in the word

You can use your previous guesses to inform you next guess, and attempt to guess the word within six attempts.

Once you have finished the game will give you the option to share your score on social media.

Are there any tips for winning?

Everyone has their own strategies, but there are a few golden rules worth remembering if you want the best chance of winning.

First, you want to start with words that contain a lot of common letters. Many players like to use a lot of vowels early, as well as common consonants like R, S and T.

Various experts, from linguistics professors to mathematicians and computer scientists, have weighed in on what the best starting word is.

A computer scientist who goes by crvlwalnek on TikTok looked into Wordle’s source file to analyse the frequency of each letter in winning answers, and found the best starting word was “later”.

Other starters people have vouched for include:

  • Irate
  • Stare
  • Arise
  • Arose
  • Learn
  • Soare
  • Samey

Another good tip is not to use duplicate letters early on. For example, starting with a word like “awake” is not optimal, as it uses two As.

Sometimes you may want to ignore your previous guesses to eliminate some letters. However, Wordle also has a “hard mode” which stops you from doing this. You can access this by hitting the settings icon in the top right.

Finally, it is important to think about common conventions when guessing words. For example, there are lots of words that end in -ICK or start with an SH-. Go through the alphabet while making your guesses and see what works phonetically, and you’ll be rewarded with those satisfying green squares.

Just one day after Wordle users reported having two different answers, those who have played Wordle 242 have taken to Twitter to say they don’t know what today’s word is.

Yesterday, users globally were left dumbfounded as Wordle gave two different answers for its 241 game, aroma and agora.

The way the word game works is there is a new five-letter word each day which users have six attempts at guessing.

The game was created by software engineer Josh Wardle in October last year and was acquired by The New York Times (NYT) for an undisclosed seven-figure sum earlier this month.

Yet today, while there have been no reports of a double up in answer, Twitter users are confused as to what the word of the day (*spoiler ahead*), caulk, means.

One user posted a still from The Inbetweeners, where the character Will utters: “I mean … Is this a word? It doesn’t look right.”

Another person, who failed to get the word, said: “Good morning to everyone except all of the staff at the New York Times, their families, friends, pets and acquaintances.”

Someone else tweeted: “A lot of phones are going to be shattered today I can feel it.”

“Anybody who got this in less than five tries today is an absolute genius,” another user said, while a fifth added: “Whoever was responsible for today’s Wordle is sick and twisted. You will not see the pearly gates.”

Other users said they were taking to Google to figure out what the word meant, so what does caulk mean?

What does caulk mean?

Caulk is a the name of a material or type of substance that is used for filling in the gaps around the edge of something like a bath or a shower.

Earlier this week, Twitter users were complaining that Wordle appears to have become harder since it made the move over to the NYT platform.

Journalist John Kapetanean tweeted: “NYT: No, we did not make Wordle harder. We promise.

“Also NYT: Today’s Wordle is KHYBX — which everyone knows is a popular 11th century Latin delicacy derived from quicksand extract. Duh.”

The NYT previously denied that the gameplay had been changed in any way.

In fact, in some way or another, they all represent the same thing the other images do. It’s a simple concept at first: you’re given four pictures with one word in common and a number of empty spaces that show the length of the word, like Hangman. From there, though, things can get complicated: wordplay (like seeing pictures of a STOP and CROSSWALK sign as well as a person writing their name with a pen–all involving the word ‘sign’!), puns, and brain-stretching connections make 4 Pics 1 Word devilishly difficult when you get to higher levels.

4 Pics 1 Word is played by over 150 million people, so there’s always someone to compete against, and new levels and challenges are being uploaded all the time. There’s no signup or registration for the game, just download the app from the app store and start playing immediately. There are over 3500 levels to 4 Pics 1 Word, which makes for endless word fun! Each puzzle has a word between 4 and ten letters long, with longer words usually being more difficult. Some of the advanced puzzles end up using abstract words, sort of like a visual crossword puzzle: some puzzles, for example, feature a gold medal, a MADE IN GERMANY stamp, a thumbs-up, and a cook with a clipboard looking over a plate of food. The answer? The seven-letter word “quality!” But that’s from level 3300…so you’ve got some time to get your word-guessing skills up!
