Game instructions for word hunt

Choose difficulty by selecting from the buttons above. The first five levels are focusing solely on the number of valid words. In the five highest levels both the number of words and the number of letters in the words are counted. The found and accepted words are shown in a list on the right, chich is filled as you find the words on the board. You mark your words by dragging your finger or with the mouse over the letters on the word field. The selected word is shown above the word field. If you select a word you already have found, it will bounce in the list, but the word is not counted twice. If the word is not in our dictionary, or if the word is too short, it will be marked red above the board. The glossary in this game is based on common English words and we’re working to improve the content of our dictionaries.
To complete a level, you must find as many words as requested.

First Grade Reading & Writing Activities: Practice Reading with a Word Hunt

In first grade, there’s a lot of new words your child will be learning to recognize. If you want to help, try playing this fun search game that’ll help improve their reading skills! Using two identical sets of word cards, your child will try to find the matching «lost» card that you’ve hidden somewhere in the house. They’ll get to play detective and practice reading at the same time!

What You Need:

  • 20 index cards
  • Pen
  • Basket or bag

What You Do:

  1. On each of the 10 index cards, write a different word. Then make a second set of cards using the same words. Words like «the,» «was,» «have,» «all,» and «some» are all great examples of words you might want to put on the cards.
  2. Have your child close their eyes or go into another room while you place the cards from one set around a room. Put them in easy-to-find places, like on the floor, on the coffee table, or on the arm of the couch. If your child is an expert at finding things, feel free to make it a bit more difficult by hiding the cards in less obvious places, like sticking out of a book or leaving them half-hidden under a coffee cup—just be sure you don’t forget where you hid them!
  3. Hand the other set of cards to your child and ask them to read the word on the first card. If they struggle, help them sound it out.
  4. Tell them they are a detective and need to find the matching word for the card. Maybe even create a story to make it more fun; say the two cards are friends but one got lost and it’s up to your child to reunite the two.
  5. The object of the game is to have them hunt for the match to each card. They might come across a card that doesn’t match the one they’re looking for. If this happens, they’ll have to recognize that it isn’t the same word and keep searching.
  6. When they find the match to the first card, instruct them to put the pair of words into the basket.
  7. Have them continue until all of the cards have been found and paired up with their matching cards.
  8. Once they can easily find the matches to the words, try a new variation of the game. Instead of giving them a second set of cards, this time you can read off the word that they need to find and they’ll have to hunt for the card with the word on it.
  9. Once they’ve mastered these words, make another set of words and keep on playing!

Trivia

  • It was previously called Daily Challenge. The Buenos Aires Logo.png update renamed it to Word Hunt.
  • The ‘Word Hunt’ is an optional selection.
    • If the player doesn’t want to complete the Word Hunt, they won’t be able to find any power-ups without a Headstart (except the Pogo Stick) until they collect all the letters.
  • Like coins or other power ups, the letters can be collected when the character jumps over it while wearing the Super Sneakers, however it cannot be absorbed by the Coin Magnet.
  • The words that the player needs to collect all have a connection to the game.
