What is a white space opportunity?

What is a white space opportunity in business? A white space is where the unspoken, unmet needs of customers are discovered in order to spark innovation. It’s a business process used to uncover opportunities, like new audiences and product improvements.

What does white space mean in sales?

White space is the gap between what products or services your customer has invested in, and the other products or services that your company or business has to offer. For example, financial advisors who offer mutual funds, exchange traded funds and insurance have many individuals and households as customers.

What is white space thinking?

White space is where unmet and unarticulated needs are uncovered to create innovation opportunities. It is where products and services don’t exist based on the present understanding of values, definition of business or even existing competencies.

Summary

In Microsoft Word, you can hide the white space at the top and bottom of each page and reduce the amount of gray space that appears between pages in print layout view. Gray space to the left and right of the page is not affected. This behavior is controlled by the White space between pages option.

When you select the White space between pages option, Word controls the white space of any newly created documents as well as the current document according to the following rules and special cases:
Behavior Explanation
—————————————————————————

Per Window When the option is set and multiple
documents are open at the same time,
the document with focus is affected; other
open documents are not affected.

Per Document When you save and close a document, the
setting is retained in the document.
If the document is open when you create
a new document, the new document acquires
the setting. For example, if white space
is hidden in the document you open,
white space will be hidden in new
documents you create.

Per user option Set on a per user basis. The setting is
stored in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry
key with other Options settings.

Backwards compatibility If you open the document in Word 2000 or
Word 97, the setting is ignored. However,
because the setting is stored in the
document, you can edit the document in
Word 97 or Word 2000, save the file, and
this setting will not be lost when you
reopen the document in Word 2002 or in a later version.

Special zoom behavior When you zoom to show more than one page
in print layout view, the white space in
the document will be displayed
regardless of the state of the option.
The «White space between pages» option is
unavailable (dimmed). Adjusting the Zoom
percentage to show one page returns the
view to the previous state.

Special page element behavior Adding a page border, page numbers, header,
or footer resets the «White space between
pages» option. To hide the white space,
click to clear the «White space between
pages» check box.

Special process behavior When finding or replacing text or when
proofing the document in the foreground,
if Word finds an item in the header or
footer area, Word switches to Normal view
and displays the item in a pane below the
document. The state of «White space between
pages» option does not change.

More Information

In Microsoft Word 2002 and in Microsoft Office Word 2003, you can use either of the following methods to show or to hide white space:

  • On the Tools menu, click Options. Click the View tab and then click to select or clear the White space between pages check box.

  • Rest the mouse pointer over the gray area above or below a page and then click when you see the Hide White Space or Show White Space pointer.

In Microsoft Office Word 2007, use either of the following methods to show or to hide white space:

  • Follow these steps:

    1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.

    2. In the left pane, click Customize.

    3. In the Choose commands from list, click All Commands.

    4. Click White Space Between Pages, click Add, and then click OK. The White Space Between Pages option will appear on the Quick Access Toolbar.

  • Rest the mouse pointer over the gray area above or below a page and then click when you see the Double-click to hide white space or Double-click to show white space

If you are hiding the white space, page breaks are still visible and noticeable in the document.

Alternatively called spacing or whitespace, white space is any section of a document that is unused or space around an object. White spaces help separate paragraphs of text, graphics, and other portions of a document, and helps a document look less crowded. Using white space effectively in a document keeps the reader reading the document, and helps the reader quickly find what they are interested in reading.

Spacing in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word spacing

In Microsoft Word, Spacing is a feature under the Page Layout tab in the Paragraph section. It can increase or decrease the spacing above (before) and below (after) each line of text. By default, the spacing is set to Before: 0 pt and After: 10 pt as shown in the picture.

Tip

To see the spacing around a line of text, highlight the line that highlights the spacing around the text.

Every space has a dot in my document

If formatting marks are enabled in a document, each space has a small dot to represent the space character. You can disable this feature by turning off formatting marks.

White space in a regular expression

With many programming languages and when working with a regular expression, white space is matched using the s escape sequence. For example, with the Perl code below if the $example variable contains any space, the script would print «I found white space!» when ran.

if ($example =~ /s/) { print "I found white space!"; }

How to handle spaces in the command line

When working on the command line, you may encounter errors when typing a file name with spaces. You can prevent errors by surrounding any files with spaces with quotes to help identify where a file begins and ends.

In computer programming, whitespace is any character or series of characters that represent horizontal or vertical space in typography. When rendered, a whitespace character does not correspond to a visible mark, but typically does occupy an area on a page. For example, the common whitespace symbol U+0020   SPACE (also ASCII 32) represents a blank space punctuation character in text, used as a word divider in Western scripts.

Overview[edit]

Relative widths of various spaces in Unicode

With many keyboard layouts, a whitespace character may be entered by pressing spacebar. Horizontal whitespace may also be entered on many keyboards with the Tab ↹ key, although the length of the space may vary. Vertical whitespace may be input by typing Return, which creates a ‘newline’ code sequence in most programs. In some systems ↵ Enter has a separate meaning but in others the two are conflated. Many early computer games used whitespace characters to draw a screen (e.g. Kingdom of Kroz).

The term «whitespace» is based on the appearance of the characters on ordinary paper. However, within an application, whitespace characters can be processed in the same way as any other character code and different programs may define their own semantics for the characters.

Unicode[edit]

The table below lists the twenty-five characters defined as whitespace («WSpace=Y», «WS») characters in the Unicode Character Database.[1] Seventeen use a definition of whitespace consistent with the algorithm for bidirectional writing («Bidirectional Character Type=WS») and are known as «Bidi-WS» characters. The remaining characters may also be used, but are not of this «Bidi» type.

Note: Depending on the browser and fonts used to view the following table, not all spaces may be displayed properly.

Exact space
  • The Cambridge Z88 provided a special «exact space» (code point 160 aka 0xA0) (invokable by key shortcut +SPACE[19]), displayed as «…» by the operating system’s display driver.[20][21] It was therefore also known as «dot space» in conjunction with BBC BASIC.[20][21]
  • Under code point 224 (0xE0) the computer also provided a special three-character-cells-wide SPACE symbol "SPC" (analogous to Unicode’s single-cell-wide U+2420).[20][21]

Non-space blanks[edit]

  • The Braille Patterns Unicode block contains U+2800 BRAILLE PATTERN BLANK, a Braille pattern with no dots raised. Some fonts display the character as a fixed-width blank, however the Unicode standard explicitly states that it does not act as a space.[22]
  • Unicode’s coverage of the Korean alphabet includes several code points which represent the absence of a written letter, and thus do not display a glyph:
    • Unicode includes a Hangul Filler character in the Hangul Compatibility Jamo block (U+3164 HANGUL FILLER). This is classified as a letter, but displayed as an empty space, like a Hangul block containing no jamo. It is used in KS X 1001 Hangul combining sequences to introduce them or denote the absence of a letter in a position, but not in Unicode’s combining jamo system.[23]
    • Unicode’s combining jamo system uses similar Hangul Choseong Filler and Hangul Jungseong Filler characters to denote the absence of a letter in initial or medial position within a syllable block, which are included in the Hangul Jamo block (U+115F HANGUL CHOSEONG FILLER, U+1160 HANGUL JUNGSEONG FILLER).[24]
    • Additionally, a Halfwidth Hangul Filler is included in the Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms (U+FFA0 HALFWIDTH HANGUL FILLER), which is used when mapping from encodings which include characters from both Johab (or Wansung) and N-byte Hangul (or its EBCDIC counterpart), such as IBM-933, which includes both Johab and EBCDIC fillers.[25][26]

Whitespace and digital typography[edit]

On-screen display[edit]

Text editors, word processors, and desktop publishing software differ in how they represent whitespace on the screen, and how they represent spaces at the ends of lines longer than the screen or column width. In some cases, spaces are shown simply as blank space; in other cases they may be represented by an interpunct or other symbols. Many different characters (described below) could be used to produce spaces, and non-character functions (such as margins and tab settings) can also affect whitespace.

Many of the Unicode space characters were created for compatibility with classic print typography.[27]

Even if digital typography has algorithmic kerning and justification, those space characters can be used to supplement the electronic formatting when needed.

Variable-width general-purpose space[edit]

In computer character encodings, there is a normal general-purpose space (Unicode character U+0020) whose width will vary according to the design of the typeface. Typical values range from 1/5 em to 1/3 em (in digital typography an em is equal to the nominal size of the font, so for a 10-point font the space will probably be between 2 and 3.3 points). Sophisticated fonts may have differently sized spaces for bold, italic, and small-caps faces, and often compositors will manually adjust the width of the space depending on the size and prominence of the text.

In addition to this general-purpose space, it is possible to encode a space of a specific width. See the table below for a complete list.

Hair spaces around dashes[edit]

Em dashes used as parenthetical dividers, and en dashes when used as word joiners, are usually set continuous with the text.[28] However, such a dash can optionally be surrounded with a hair space, U+200A, or thin space, U+2009. The hair space can be written in HTML by using the numeric character references or , or the named entity  , but is not universally supported in browsers yet, as of 2016.[which?] The thin space is named entity   and numeric references or . These spaces are much thinner than a normal space (except in a monospaced (non-proportional) font), with the hair space being the thinner of the two.

Computing applications[edit]

Programming languages[edit]

In programming language syntax, spaces are frequently used to explicitly separate tokens. In most languages multiple whitespace characters are treated the same as a single whitespace character (outside of quoted strings); such languages are called free-form. In a few languages, including Haskell, occam, ABC, and Python, whitespace and indentation are used for syntactical purposes. In the satirical language called Whitespace, whitespace characters are the only valid characters for programming, while any other characters are ignored.

Excessive use of whitespace, especially trailing whitespace at the end of lines, is considered a nuisance. However correct use of whitespace can make the code easier to read and help group related logic.

Most languages only recognize ASCII characters as whitespace, or in some cases Unicode newlines as well, but not most of the characters listed above. The C language defines whitespace characters to be «space, horizontal tab, new-line, vertical tab, and form-feed».[29] The HTTP network protocol requires different types of whitespace to be used in different parts of the protocol, such as: only the space character in the status line, CRLF at the end of a line, and «linear whitespace» in header values.[30]

Command line user interfaces[edit]

In commands processed by command processors, e.g., in scripts and typed in, the space character can cause problems as it has two possible functions: as part of a command or parameter, or as a parameter or name separator. Ambiguity can be prevented either by prohibiting embedded spaces, or by enclosing a name with embedded spaces between quote characters.

Markup languages[edit]

Some markup languages, such as SGML, preserve whitespace as written.

Web markup languages such as XML and HTML treat whitespace characters specially, including space characters, for programmers’ convenience. One or more space characters read by conforming display-time processors of those markup languages are collapsed to 0 or 1 space, depending on their semantic context. For example, double (or more) spaces within text are collapsed to a single space, and spaces which appear on either side of the «=» that separates an attribute name from its value have no effect on the interpretation of the document. Element end tags can contain trailing spaces, and empty-element tags in XML can contain spaces before the «/>«. In these languages, unnecessary whitespace increases the file size, and so may slow network transfers. On the other hand, unnecessary whitespace can also inconspicuously mark code, similar to, but less obvious than comments in code. This can be desirable to prove an infringement of license or copyright that was committed by copying and pasting.

In XML attribute values, sequences of whitespace characters are treated as a single space when the document is read by a parser.[31] Whitespace in XML element content is not changed in this way by the parser, but an application receiving information from the parser may choose to apply similar rules to element content. An XML document author can use the xml:space="preserve" attribute on an element to instruct the parser to discourage the downstream application from altering whitespace in that element’s content.

In most HTML elements, a sequence of whitespace characters is treated as a single inter-word separator, which may manifest as a single space character when rendering text in a language that normally inserts such space between words.[32] Conforming HTML renderers are required to apply a more literal treatment of whitespace within a few prescribed elements, such as the pre tag and any element for which CSS has been used to apply pre-like whitespace processing. In such elements, space characters will not be «collapsed» into inter-word separators.

In both XML and HTML, the non-breaking space character, along with other non-«standard» spaces, is not treated as collapsible «whitespace», so it is not subject to the rules above.

File names[edit]

Such usage is similar to multiword file names written for operating systems and applications that are confused by embedded space codes—such file names instead use an underscore (_) as a word separator, as_in_this_phrase.

Another such symbol was U+2422 BLANK SYMBOL. This was used in the early years of computer programming when writing on coding forms. Keypunch operators immediately recognized the symbol as an «explicit space».[16] It was used in BCDIC,[16] EBCDIC,[16] and ASCII-1963.[16]

What is whitespace in writing?

White space is just what it sounds like: the white space left on the page around the words. Writinghood says: White space is the emptiness between the characters, lines and paragraphs of your article or story.

What is the space before a paragraph called?

Line spacing

Why is whitespace important?

Whitespace not only creates harmony, balance, and helps to brand a design, it can also be used to lead a reader from one element to another. It is the space that balances things out and reminds us that designs are beautiful. We don’t need to create a layout overcrowded with text and images to deliver a clear message.

How do you use whitespace?

Use micro white space inside the design element features as seen in the text, images and content blocks. We can also approach white space as being passive or active. Passive white space does not have a specific role in the design other than facilitating the user experience. It is all about being easier to read.

  2. Increase line spacing. If it is possible increase your line spacing on your documents.
  3. Shorten your sentences. Long sentences form solid blocks.
  4. Break up paragraphs.
  5. Avoid justifying your documents.

How do you add a blank space to a photo?

Click and hold on the image and drag it to the right to create some whitespace on the left. You can also use the handles to make the image smaller (to create whitespace at the bottom and top if you like). Once you are happy with where your image is on the canvas (the white space), click away into the grey area.

Whitespace Characters
to Copy and Paste

Quickly copy and paste Unicode whitespace characters — and learn how and when to use them.

What are whitespace characters?

Whitespace characters denote the empty space between all the characters you can actually see. They have width (height if you’re writing vertically), some special rules, and not much else.

The most common whitespace character, is the word space The one you get when you press the space bar.

What is white space?

Generally speaking, white space is any empty area of a design or composition; the margins in a book, or the sky in a painting:

A painting of the Parthenon with a generous clear sky.

It’s as simple as that, yet it’s often white space that separates good design from bad—almost always because there isn’t enough of it.

Using white space online

Big type, even huge type, can be beautiful and useful. But poise is usually far more important than size – and poise consists primarily of emptiness. Typographically, poise is made of whitespace.

Robert Bringhurst — The elements of typographic style

The above holds especially true online. Web developers have a tendency to cram as much information on your screen as possible. One common criticism of this website is that there’s too much “wasted space.”

This is wrong. The opposite is true. The more crowded a composition, the less weight is carried by each individual element. When designing a website or a document, you can use whitespace to distinguish important information.

Whitespace on Social Media

Online (particularly on social media) you’re often limited to the whitespace characters designated by Unicode.

While most of these characters do little but add some white space in very particular situations, it’s worth getting to know them a little.

Using them effectively can and help your writing seem more authoritative.

Word Space

The word space is the character you get when you press the space bar. It’s the most common whitespace character.

The word space is a character with an inherent conflict of interest: the space must be wide enough to separate individual words, but narrow enough to encourage grouping into sentences and paragraphs.

Karen Cheng — Designing Type

The word space is used to separate words and sentences. You know that already — but there’s still a couple of pitfalls to be aware of when using it.

Don’t use two spaces between sentences.

Sometimes people add two spaces after a period. There ‘s a logic behind this—as the elements of your writing get bigger, so does the white space between them.

letters → words → sentences → paragraphs

However, a period is mostly white space. So sentences already have more space between them than words. The type designer of your chosen typeface will have taken this into account.

Don’t do this.  Do this. See?

No-break spaces

The word space also tells your word processor, or web browser when it’s okay to break onto another line—but this isn’t always what you want.

If it’s important to the flow of your writing that two words never be apart, you should insert a no-break space. You can space two words, like normal, without the possibility of them being on separate lines.

Hair Space

Use the hair space when two characters are just a tiny bit closer than you’d like.

Kerning on the fly

You can use the hair space to add kerning (space between two individual letters) in circumstances where you normall can’t, like on social media.

For example, the 𝔻𝕠𝕦𝕓𝕝𝕖 𝕊𝕥𝕣𝕦𝕔𝕜 characters generated by the Fancy Font Generator? can have terrible 𝕜𝕖𝕣𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕘. Using a hair space you can fix it. So 𝕜𝕖𝕣𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕘 becomes 𝕜𝕖𝕣  𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕘.

Thin Space and Six‑per‑em Space

These two are pretty much the same. Just like the hair space they’re used to create a little extra space between characters.

Both are roughly one sixth of an Em in width. One specific use of the thin space is for seperating quotes in nested quotations:

Clive told me “Prof. Reginald said ‘don’t use nested quotations’

Punctuation Space

The punctuation space takes up as much width as a period. It also acts as a non-breaking space. Some languages have whitespace before a punctuation mark. This space is used in those circumstances.

Figure Space and Ideographic Space

A figure space is used solely for spacing fixed-width numerals. Its width is the same as one of the numerals.

The ideographic space, similar to the figure space, is used with fixed-width CJK (Chinese Japanese Korean) characters.

Braille Blank

This is my favourite—its not really a space. It’s meant to represent a braille pattern with six non-raised dots. So, it displays as blank or sometimes six hollow dots. ⠀

This means you can use this space places where you normally can’t, like in URLs.

HTML Entity

Zero-width Space

The paradoxically named zero-width space has one odd job to do. It lets your browser know when it’s okay to break a word onto a new line, without hyphenating it.

Useful, maybe, but the ability to use an invisible character with no width has serious cyber-security implications.

Hackers could create usernames, emails addresses, and websites that look identical to a human, but different to computers. Luckily, zero-width spaces are prohibited in email addresses or domain names—and it’s a well-known issue.

You’re unlikely to be tricked in this way—but it has happened.

On the upside, there are a few genuinely useful things you can do with a zero-width space:

Stop auto-linking

You can stop social media sites from automatically turning a URL into a link, without breaking up the text of the link.

Empty form inputs

You can use all these spaces to fill inputs with empty space, but the zero-width space seems to work in a few places the others don’t.

Prevent information leaks

This idea comes from cyber-security guy Zach Aysan

If your company has a leaker, you can add zero-width spaces to sensitive documents—hidden in different places for each of the recipients.

Once the material is leaked, you can check it for zero-width spaces and find out the identity of the leaker.

Send secret messages

You can use zero-width spaces to hide an encoded binary message in a piece of text.
For instance: there is a hidden emoji in this

Standing out online

While most of these tricks are only useful to web developers–I can imagine a few scenarios where these characters could help you stand out on social media.

Let me know if you come up with any fun uses for these characters.

Show or Hide White Space in Microsoft Word Documents

by Avantix Learning Team | Updated February 9, 2022

Applies to: Microsoft® Word® 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 or 365 (Windows)

You can show or hide white space at the top and bottom of pages in Microsoft Word documents. If you hide white space, you won’t be able to see headers, footers or top and bottom margins in Print Layout View. The gray space that typically appears at the top and bottom of pages as you scroll through your document will also disappear. If you want to show or hide spaces between words, you’ll need to click Show/Hide ¶ on the Home tab in the Ribbon.

Print Layout View is the default view in Word. You can click the View tab in the Ribbon and select Print Layout in the Views group to go to this view if necessary.

In Word documents, margins are set for the top and bottom of pages by default and can be changed on the Layout tab in the Ribbon. Headers and footers appear in the top and bottom margin areas (with the exception of floating objects) so if white space is hidden, headers and footers may seem to be missing.

Showing or hiding white space using a shortcut

To show or hide white space in Word using a shortcut:

  1. Position the cursor at the top of the document (you can press Ctrl + Home to move the cursor to the top of the document).
  2. Move the pointer into the gray area just above the first page (below the Ruler) until the pointer turns into an up and down arrow. A message appears to Double-click to show white space or Double-click to hide white space.
  3. Double-click. If you are hiding white space, you can also position the pointer in the gray area between pages and then double-click.

If you show or hide white space, this setting will continue in any new documents you create. When white space is hidden, the setting affects not just the white space between pages but anything that is part of the header or footer (including watermarks and other graphics anchored to the header or footer). When you save and close a document, the setting is retained in the document.

If you hide white space, page breaks are still visible in the document. If you print the document, the headers and footers will print even if white space is hidden.

Showing or hiding white space using the Options dialog box

To show or hide white space using the Word Options dialog box:

  1. Open a Word document where you want to show or hide white space.
  2. Click the File tab in the Ribbon.
  3. Select Options. A dialog box appears.
  4. In the categories on the left, select Display.
  5. In the pane on the right, check or uncheck Show whitespace between pages in Print Layout view.
  6. Click OK.

The Options dialog box, with the Display category selected, appears as follows:

Show or hide white space in Word using Options dialog box.

Because this feature isn’t obvious, it can cause problems for users if areas in their document seem to be missing (such as headers or footers).

While typing word documents, you usually separate words and sentences by pressing the Space key (also known as Spacebar), which inserts a regular general-purpose space character. However, some Microsoft Word documents may contain other kinds of spaces. You can discover those white-space symbols during editing the document but not on printing.

To show non-printable and white-space symbols in Microsoft Word, click the button button Show/Hide ¶ (or pressing Ctrl+* or Ctrl+Shift+8):

Show/Hide ¶ button in Word 2016

You will be able to see the following marks for white-space characters:

   1)   A little dot between words represents a normal space (also called word space):

Common spaces in Word 2016

A general rule of publishing is to use only one normal space between words (the only exception is a pre-formatted text, e.g., code listings). If you need to align text at fixed positions of the line, use
tabs and tab stops.

   2)   A degree symbols between word represents a nonbreaking space (also called non-breaking space, no-break space, non-breakable space (NBSP), hard space, or fixed space) that prevents text wrapping at the end of the line. A Nonbreaking space in the Word document looks like:

Nonbreaking spaces in Word 2016

A general rule of publishing is to use non-breaking spaces between words of
organization and person names, postal addresses, etc.

Some popular rules:

  • Insert a nonbreaking space between the copyright symbol and the following year(s) to ensure they will not end up on different lines or pages. For example:

Rule 1 for Nonbreaking spaces in Word 2016

  • Insert a nonbreaking space before and after ellipses (also called a suspension point, points of ellipsis, periods of ellipsis, or even «dot-dot-dot» is a sequence of three dots used to indicate an omission in quoted material). For example:

Rule 2 for Nonbreaking spaces in Word 2016

   3)   A little dot with varying gaps before and after the dot represents Em Space and En Space. These spaces have different widths on printing:

  • Em space is a space with the width of the lowercase m character.
  • En space is a space with the width of the lowercase n character.

   4)   A vertical bar between words represents a ¼ Em space (also known as mid-space) is a space with the ¼ width of the lowercase m character:

Em and En spaces in Word 2016

If you want to see only space marks and no other non-printable symbols, do the following:
