The Russian language is rich for words to express any feelings, especially romantic ones. Here is your Valentine Day’s list of the best phrases you can tell your significant other!
1. Я люблю тебя
Not everyone likes extra wording and too ornate, complicated speeches. So the easier is often the better. The win-win option to confess your love to someone is a simple “I love you”, or Ya lyublyu tebya, as it is pronounced in Russian.
An old way to refer to a beloved person with respect would be: Ya lyublyu vas — this is how Russian noblemen would talk about love. And as foreigners often joke, this sounds like “Yellow blue bus” in English! Just remember this weird phrase — and you’ll be the most romantic person ever!
2. Я влюблен(а)
Russians have several different “grades” of love. If you say “I love you/Я люблю тебя” too early, you’ll just be perceived as a not serious person, or the receiver of your feeling might think you’re joking or pranking them.
Ya vlyublen [v tebya] (for a male speaker) and Ya vlyublena [v tebya] (female form) is literally translated as: “I am in love [with you]”. But, this confession is not as strong as LOVE; it’s rather just an enamored person, infatuated by someone.
3. Я тебя обожаю
This is a big and comprehensive expression of love, which means an absolute admiration by someone. “I adore you” or Ya tebya obozhayu is a very strong declaration of love, but it is more appropriate to use if you already said “I love you” before and when you are already in a relationship.
At the same time, Ya tebya obozhayu can easily be said to a friend when they’ve cracked a good joke and made you laugh. And Ya obozhayu can be used for anything that you LOVE, from your new phone to your dog, or even just a coffee.
4. Я схожу по тебе с ума
“I’m crazy about you”, or Ya skhozhu po tebe s uma. This phrase is probably the most difficult to pronounce, but a very nice and strong sentiment. Usually, those who aren’t ready to say “I love you” can use this phrase, because it’s without any real commitment. As we say in Russia: “To promise marrying doesn’t equal marrying” (and this is also what the title of the movie He’s Just Not That Into You is known as in Russia).
On the other side, this phrase is very appropriate and suitable for passion and sex. And yes, a person can also be crazy about jazz music or a new coat, not only a woman/man.
5. Ты мой/моя единственный/ая
You’re my only! Who doesn’t dream of hearing it? And this is translated in Russian with the phrase: Ty moy edinstvenny (to a man) and Ty moya edinstvennaya (to a woman).
No word or phrase can express the level of love, loyalty and dedication better than this. Everything fades into the background and all the thoughts of a speaker are devoted to a single person. Can anything be a more sincere confession of love? Hardly!
6. Я готов/а на все ради тебя
“And you? What are you gonna do for love?” asks actress Natalie Portman in a Dior perfume advert. In Russia, we also consider that love is not about words, but primarily about actions.
So saying Ya gotov na vse radi tebya (or Ya gotova na vse radi tebya if a woman says it) means you are ready to do anything for your beloved one. Another option is even stronger: Ya svernu gory radi tebya — which means I will move mountains for you. A romantic phrase, isn’t it?
7. Я тебя никому не отдам
Besides that you’re the only one, Russians would rather promise not to let anyone else “have” you. Ya tebya nikomu ne otdam literally translates as: “I won’t give you out to anyone” and actually means that “I won’t let you go” and “I will fight for your love in the event someone else is vying for it”.
While old-fashioned ladies or gentlemen would rather appreciate this phrase, the young and free people could possibly perceive it as a kind of threat and a toxic relationship. In any case, be careful with the way you express your feelings in any country!
P.S. And don’t forget: If you give flowers to a Russian girl, there should be an odd number!!! (An even number of flowers is only acceptable at funerals in Russia…)

This is again honest, and to the point. No need to play with someone’s emotions by not letting them know how you feel. However, this could imply that you may fall in love with him/her again after a period of time, so use with discretion.

Yes, he/she probably deserves a better relationship if your own feelings have cooled down.

Say this if you want to keep the relationship, but need to slow down its progress a bit. It is also good if you feel things are getting too intense for your liking. However, it is not really a break-up line, so be careful not to mislead.

If you want to say I love you in Russian, ‘Я тебя люблю’ it is, without a doubt, the most beautiful phrase in every language, thanks to that divine feeling of love.
You can also switch the words around and say: Я люблю тебя
The phrase is pronounced ‘Ya lyublyu tebya.’ In Russian, there is no
difference in usage if you want to say it to your significant other, family, or
friends.
The phrase ‘Я тебя люблю’ is unique, and as you are saying it, you can feel all the love and tenderness through these words.
If your loved one tells you Я люблю тебя, you can respond with: я тоже тебя люблю.
я тоже тебя люблю is the way you say I love you too.
A fun way to remember this is to remember the mnemonic: yellow blue bus. Maybe a yellow blue bus is not the first thing you think about when thinking about love, but if it makes you remember ” Ya lyublyu tebya”, it’s worth it 😉

If you want to change the phrase a bit, instead of saying “я люблю тебя всем сердцем”we suggest you say I love you with all my soul or in Russian ‘Я люблю тебя всей душой,’ which is spelled ‘Ya lyublyu tebya fsyei dushoj.’
You
are so beautiful
It can be perfect as a compliment,
but also as an introduction to other expressions of love. To express your
feelings to a woman, use the phrase ‘Ты така́я краси́вая,’ which is pronounced ‘Ty ta-ká-ya
kra-sée-va-ya.’ For men, use ‘Ты тако́й краси́вый’, pronounced as ‘Ty ta-kóî
kra-sée-vyî.’

я не могу means I cannot. без тебя means without you. And жить means to live.
This phrase should be used in

If you say it in English, it may
sound a little odd, since in English speaking countries people tend to use the
standard equivalent such as ‘my darling,’ but in Russian when you say ‘Душа моя ’ or literally translated ‘My soul’ to your partner, he or she is
the center of your world at that moment. We recommend you say this only if you
really mean it – someone’s feelings might get hurt.
I miss you
When you are in love, you always
miss your significant other. He or she is always on your mind, and you want to
be with them all the time. If you need help expressing this feeling, learn to

In the Russian language, ‘Поцелуй меня’ means ‘kiss me.’ Whether you say it to your partner, or perhaps a family member, this phrase is direct and honest, without any hidden meaning. Pretty easy, don’t you think?
I adore you
‘Я обожаю тебя’ or ‘I adore you’ can be used both for men and women. You can’t get tired of hearing or saying this phrase, especially with the intense feelings you have. Just like the phrase I love you in Russian, this one can also be used to state how much you love your partner, a family member, or a friend.
You have beautiful eyes/smile
These phrases are perfect for first dates with native Russian speakers. ‘You have beautiful eyes’ in Russian is translated as ‘У тебя красивые глаза’. It is pronounced ‘U tyebya krasivyye glaza.’
To change the phrase a bit, you have to change two last words,
that is, if you want to say, for example, ‘You have a charming smile,’ you can say ‘У тебя очаровательная улыбка’ pronounced ‘U tyebya acheravatyel’naya ulypka.’ In

Another
phrase that is used differently for men and women. If you want to say to a
woman ‘You are special,’ then you

between phrases that have adjectives since, in Russian, there are genders. Adjectives
must agree in gender with the nouns they describe, like in the

simply say in Russian ‘Ты всегда в моих

your love some of their poems, especially in Russian. Just imagine that! It could

“I Love You” and Other Affectionate Phrases in Russian
1. Она мне нравится (I like her)
If you’re not at the stage of directly expressing your feelings yet, the phrase “…мне нравится” (…is pleasing to me) can be used to indicate both preference and romantic feelings.
For example, it can be used to express a liking for a certain food, a general liking for a person or feelings of attraction toward someone.
Someone might ask:
“Она тебе нравится?” (Do you like her?)
“Да, она милая.” (Yes, she’s sweet).
Since “Мне нравится” can be used as a generic statement that implies nothing more than a platonic association and feelings of attraction, it can be difficult to differentiate between the two meanings.
Just like in English though, you’d be able to tell if you’re being friend-zoned or if someone actually takes interest in you by looking at the context.
Also be aware that this is a phrase to be used while talking about the object of your affection with someone else. If you’re ready to tell the person you like directly, you can say, “Ты мне нравишься,” which is “I like you.”
2. Я тебя люблю (I love you)
Quite simply, if you’d like to convey your love for another person this is what you want to say. This is the clearest and most direct way to express it.
You can choose to change the word order and say “Я люблю тебя,” but there’s no significant difference in the meaning.
Some Russians prefer to emphasize the last word in a sentence, thus “Я тебя люблю” may be preferred.
3. Я тоже тебя люблю (I love you, too)
Hopefully, if you’re ever in the position where someone tells you they love you, you’ll reciprocate the feeling. If that’s the case, use this sentence.
But once you’ve been in a relationship for a while and want to emphasize the depth of your feelings and devotion, you might want to consider using some of the next few phrases!
4. Я тебя обожаю (I adore you)
As you’d expect, this is a rather serious declaration, and if used incorrectly can sound a bit obsessive, so think carefully before using it.
Saying it too early might be like saying “I love you” on the first date in English.
5. Я не могу без тебя жить (I can’t live without you)
What a cute phrase!
But be careful—don’t let its adorableness deceive you. While in English we might think this sounds like a cheesy phrase any lovebirds would say, Russians take it a bit more seriously.
Similar to “Я тебя обожаю,” this is a significant comment and shouldn’t be used too early in a relationship.
6. Я люблю тебя всем сердцем (I love you from the bottom of my heart)
Perhaps even deeper than the previous two, this is a rather serious phrase and shouldn’t be used lightly. It literally means, “I love you with my whole heart.”
It’s probably better to wait until you regularly tell your partner “Я тебя люблю” before taking it to the next level with this saying.
Pet Names for Your Loved One in Russian
As is common in other languages, Russians have a number of special nicknames they use to address their loved ones. Some of the most common pet names include:
- (Моя) Любимая / (Мой) Любимый — My love (for a woman/for a man)
- Дорогая / Дорогой — My dear (for a woman/for a man)
- Милая / Милый — Sweetie or sweetheart (for a woman/for a man)
Russians also like to use the names of animals for their romantic partners, such as:
- Котёнок / Котик — Kitten (female/male)
- Зайка / Зайчик — Honey, bunny or little rabbit (female/male)

1. I love you in Russian
- Я люблю тебя

“Yellow blue bus” is the phrase that English speakers associate with the second phrase above. It sounds funny, but that’s how you can easily remember and pronounce it. Now, native speakers don’t really use this way to say “I love you” because it’s too formal.
If you want to say I love you in Russian to your girlfriend, say “Я люблю тебя.” or you can play with words and say “Я тебя люблю.” This is the most common way to say I love you in Russian.
2. “I love you from the bottom of my heart”
- Я люблю тебя всем сердцем
- Ya lyublyu tebya vsem serdtsem
This phrase is used to emphasize the depth of your love. Сердце means heart. So, we take the phrase: Я люблю тебя, that you already. Then, add “всем сердцем“. This phrase can only said to a loved one, or you can confess your love to the person you really adore. Я люблю тебя всем сердцем is a very emotional and sensual phrase. At the same time, these are beautiful words.
Do not hesitate to encourage your loved one with these great words as often as possible.
3. “I’m in love with you” in Russian
- Я влюблен в тебя (m)
- Ya vlyublyon v tebya
- Я влюбленa в тебя (f)
- Ya vlyublena v tebya
In the first phrase with (m), the verb is conjugated in the male gender. Men should use this. The second one is in the female tense; women should use it.
4. I can’t live without you
- Я не могу жить без тебя
- Ya ne mogu zhit’ bez tebya
This is a very STRONG way to say I love you in Russian. The verb zhit‘ or to live, here, is gender neutral so anyone can use this phrase. Very emotional phrase overall so be careful how you use it.

6. I have feelings for you.

Part 2: How to Respond to I Love You in Russian
When someone tells you I love you in Russian, you’ll need to respond. Depending on how deep and serious the LOVE is, you can respond with one of the phrases below.
The one word you need to know here is тоже – tozhe.
You’ll find out what it means.
1. I love you too
- Я тоже тебя люблю
- Ya tozhe tebya lyublyu
Just say Я тебя люблю, which you already learned and add тоже. It means also or too. You can use this phrase as a response to almost all of the phrases you’ve learned.
2. I adore you too
- Я тоже обожаю тебя
- Ya obozhayu tebya tozhe
Я обожаю тебя тоже – these are great words to say if your love says “I adore you.”
3. I can’t live without you too
- Я тоже не могу жить без тебя
- Ya tozhe ne mogu zhit bez tebya
Again, all we really did was add тоже to the phrase that you already learned.
4. I have feelings for you too
- У меня тоже к тебе чувства
- U menya tozhe k tebe chuvstva
5. “Love ya too!” in Russian
- Люблю тебя тоже!
- Lyublyu tebya tozhe!

I love you in Russian
Here is how you say “I love you” in Russian:
Я тебя́ люблю́.
[ya tee-byá lyub-lyú]
Because in Russian, unlike English, you can change the order of words without changing the meaning, you can also say Я люблю́ тебя́ [ya lyub-lyú tee-byá]. Both versions are correct and mean the same thing: I love you.
If you want to make an accent on any of the words, for example “I LOVE you” or “I love YOU”, you can do it with intonation.
How to propose in Russian
When you want to propose to somebody, you can say:
Дава́й поже́нимся.
[da-váî pa-zhé-neem-sya]
Let’s get married.
In Russian, men же́нятся (infinitive – жени́ться) and women выхо́дят за́муж (выходи́ть за́муж). So men say:
Выходи́ за меня́!
[vy-ha-dée za mee-nyá]
Marry me!
Or:
Ты вы́йдешь за меня́ за́муж?
[ty výî-dyesh za mee-nyá]
Will you marry me?
While women say:
Ты же́нишься на мне?
[ty zhé-neesh-sya na mnye]
Will you marry me?
Note that the phrase “дава́й поже́нимся” mentioned earlier works for both men and women.
How to invite to a date
If it’s too early to talk about marriage, and you just want to let a girl know that you like her or invite her to a date, you might need the following phrases:
Ты мне нра́вишься.
[ty mnye nrá-veesh-sya]
I like you.
