Are we missing a good antonym for latest?

  • #1

We can use «latest» to desribe a thing happened very recently. Like «latest game». What if something will happen in the future? Can I say «soonest»?
THank you in advance

    • #2

    Yes, you can. If an author has recently published a book and they have not published one since you would say;
«Have you read his latest book?» for example.

    Hope that helps!

    • #3

If it is future, you may use soon-to-be.

NOW: Have you read his latest book?
FUTURE: I can’t wait to read his soon-to-be published book!

    Neever

    • #4

Like «latest game». What if something will happen in the future? Can I say «soonest»?

If I have understood correctly, you mean to say something like, «His soonest game, which will be released in July»?
No, you cannot say that, it doesn’t sound well at all. I can’t think of an opposite or pair word for «latest», I’m afraid.
You would have to use something like «his next game» or «his upcoming release» or «his game, which will be released in July».

    I hope this helps.

Ah, I think I misunderstood the original question slightly — in response I would suggest «forthcoming» or «upcoming» (as mentioned by Neever) but, as ever, it might depend on the context…

    panjandrum

    • #6

I’d definitely go for next — as suggested by neever.

His latest book is the most recent of a series of books.

His next book also assumes that there have been previous books.

If I happened to be talking about games, though, I don’t think I would use latest — I would use last.

Where did Ireland play their last rugby match?
Ah yes, their last match was in Dublin on Saturday 11 March. They beat Scotland 15-9 and they are currently leading the Six Nations.

Their next match is on Saturday 18 March, in England.

    But is it correct?

(In Finnish we have a similar situation — very many people say «last» instead of «latest» and this is considered incorrect.)

    • #8

In one sense, yes, it is correct, and sometimes even better than «latest.» Think of «The last time I saw Paris.» This would refer to my latest visit there, but no one would say, «The latest time I saw Paris.» News broadcasts, however, always give «the latest sports scores.»

I can see your point — but I don’t think that it would be considered wrong in English.
